Elisabetta Gnone is an Italian writer. In April 2001, she co-created the Italian comic/magazine W.I.T.C.H. with Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa. The publication was later made into the television series of the same name. Gnone also wrote the children's trilogy Fairy Oak: Il segreto delle gemelle (The Secret of the Twins), L'incanto del buio (The Spell of Darkness), and Il potere della luce (The Power of Light). She expanded the Fairy Oak Universe with four more books, "The four mysteries": "Captain Grisam's love", "Shirley's wizarding days", "Flox smiles in autumn", and "Good-bye Fairy Oak".
As standard for the series, this adapts an issue of the monthly comic. It's bookended by a few pages of full colour pages for the comic, and there are occasional small black and white character images. The book is the usual length (quite short) and easy to read with fun and engaging characterisations.
As part of the W.I.T.C.H. series, The Last Tear works well: it develops the motivations of one of the antagonists, gives the protagonists some information about the (as yet unseen) main antagonists and by the end of the book there's a sense of accomplishment. It wouldn't work as well for someone who hasn't read the previous few books but it isn't intended to.
Szczerze mówiąc, nie umiem ocenić tej książki. Kocham komiks nad życie, ale w takiej formie powieści jeszcze bardziej widać braki, czy też samą prostotę fabuły. Tak wiele można by tam dodać i rozwinąć.
The Last Tear Will’s dormouse gets sick from eating too many cookies, so she calls Matt. She’s told his grandfather owns an animal clinic. Will arrives at the clinic, but Matt isn’t happy to see her. Previously her astral cone kissed him and then slapped him. Will tries to explain (but at the same time knows she can’t *really* explain) So she turns her attention to the dormouse. Matt’s grandfather says he’d like to keep him overnight. Seeing that she loves all the animals so much, he offers her a job as his assistant because Matt is too busy. Then confides she needs to slap him more often. Will says she’ll think about it and give him her answer soon.
Irma’s astral drop was also a little bit off and accepted a date from Martin Tubbs. Martin tries everything to impress Irma. He shows up in his scout uniforms (girls love a man in uniform maybe?). He tries showing he has sensitivity (Ralph would approve). He chooses the museum for the date and he even tries to tell her he *could* look more appealing without the glasses by taking them off. (This reminded me so much of that old milk commercial that said something like “You may not like me now but I’m drinking milk and in a few years -and then they’d show a before and after-) When he takes off the glasses though, he trips over the steps to the museum. For some reason this softens Irma up. Still, she lets him know she’s only interested in him as a “friend”. He accepts this but at the same time, we can see he’s still hopeful.
While looking at the dinosaur exhibit, they hear a scream. A lady tells a guard she saw something horrible and Irma and Martin go in that direction. Irma and Martin see a reptilian creature and Irma instantly recognizes it as one from Metamoor. It recognizes her too as a Guardian and vanishes into the shadows. An officer shows up and the confused woman who swore a creature appeared out of thin air. Martin says he saw it too.
W.I.T,C.H make plans to go to the museum that evening. But unfortunately so do Uriah, Lairamt. Kurt, and Nigel. Uriah has heard about the monster and because he’s bored with Sheffield is looking for a little adventure. Tonight will be that night!
As suspected, the museum contains a portal. W.I.T,C.H inside the museum tries to find the portal but instead finds an unusual painting. One of the figures in the painting looks like Elyon, but Elyon says that she’s behind them. She then traps W.I.T.C.H in a bubble. Elyon reveals that the reptile they saw at the dance is the cute boy she went to meet-Cedric-. Also that Phoebus (who they’ve seen on seals and objects) is Elyon’s brother. Elyon tells the story of how her parents died when she was a baby and how Phoebus sent a nurse to watch out for her. But she was kidnapped by officials that pretended to be her parents. They opened a portal and brought her to Earth. Mrs. Rudolph (a math teacher at their school) was Elyon’s nurse. Elyon blames the Guardians for the Metamors being held prisons. She also blames them for Phoebus not being able to find her. They try to plead with her on their old friendship, but she says they’ve both changed and makes them vanish.
Uriah, Laurant, Kurt, and Nigall come face to face with Cedric and the blue monster. Kurt is the one that mans up and prepares to slay the monsters while Uriah screams like a little girl. W.I.T.C. H find themselves inside the painting “The Never-Ending Spring” with its other residents. The other residents notice them right away as their magical forms (and clothes) aren’t like anything the others have seen. And the other paintings residents start to suspect them of being witches. They soon find themselves chased by soldiers. After deciding the best way to escape the soldiers is by going up (as in the thatched roofs) of the houses, it isn’t long before W.I.T.C.H find themselves trapped in one of the houses after the roof caves in. They manage to escape out the back door but are then cornered again. A man named Elias comes to the rescue and tells the soldiers their guest of his and the soldiers back off. He then tells the girls he’s the creator of the painting.
Even though Kurt shows bravery, he’s no match for the Metamoor monster (Cedric?) who knocks the sword out of his hand. Nigel finally gets Kurt to run. Nigel trying to get out the locked door rams it with a fire extinguisher and sets off an alarm. The police show up and the boys take off to jump out the window. Nigel stops and stops Uriah and tries to convince him that they need to turn themselves in, but Uriah says Nigel is on his own and if he tattles, he’ll let him have it. Uriah makes it out the window, but the police quickly surround him and the rest outside. Judge Cook is called and Uriah, Kurt, Laurents, and Nigel’s parents. Judge Cook says she won’t send them to jail, but she has something else in mind.
Elias tells his story about how he was a court painter until the Royals died. Phoebus then had all images of him destroyed because they weren’t good enough. He had Elias watched and eventually Elias found a portal to another world where he could paint again freely. Some of Phoebus’s men (Cedric) found him and punished him by putting him not in the painting with his love but in Never Ending Spring. The people had no reason to cry so they took the last tear and put it in a jar and placed it in the cathedral. Elias never got to see goodbye to his love Alexandria and wishes he could just paint her. So Will vows to help him find a way to make his colors bright enough instead of the pale washes he can only achieve. Will’s idea is for Elias to mix his paints with the last tear but when they get it, Frost the Hunter shows up. W.I.T.C.H takes on Frost while they send Elias back to his studio. Frost knocks himself forgetting to duck in the doorway. Then the soldiers get in on it. Elias can now paint. The spell is broken. W.I.T.C.H’s magic comes back. W,IT.C.H and the soldiers face off against Frost. In the end, Will offers to keep the portal open so Elias can get back home but he turns down the offer. Uriah, Kurt, Laurent, and Nigel have to do community service at the museum. Uriah points out how mad he is at Judge Cook and then sees Taranee, but Nigel says to leave her out of it. Nigel and Tarnee wave at each other. Uriah asks the girls something, but they say they’re just coming to visit a friend and we see them standing in front of Never-Ending Spring.
My Thoughts: I was very proud of some of the characters! I was proud of Irma. I know that deep down she didn’t want to go on that date and felt pressured into it. And coming from a family where I often feel pressured to attend events I don’t want to attend I really do know what that’s like. But her change of attitude was surprising. It put me in the mind of old shows like “Family Matters” (When Laura starts to accept Steve’s friendship a little more as the show went on and then eventually ended up marrying him at the end). Martin was cute in a dorky sort of way. You can tell he really was trying and honestly, he’s probably one of those characters that one day will do a “Roger” (Sister Sister). He’ll take off the glasses, he’ll get contacts, he’ll do something to his hair, and start dressing more stylishly and then all the girls (including Irma) will be on him. We see it TIME and TIME and TIME again with nerdy characters.
I thought Uriah was DUMB! Who goes *LOOKING* for a monster! His butt is DESERVED to be ATE! He practically was wearing a sign KILL ME PLEASE! But I was impressed with Kurt. Usually, I don’t think much of Uriah’s crew, but Kurt REALLY manned up. You gotta give him that. Was it stupid to think this was remotely like a video game? YES! But the others ran off like little punks. If there was a girl in this, Kurt *totally* would have gotten her. Even tho he *did* get knocked down, I thought he was BRAVE!
The *artist* part of me thought the concept of Elyon sticking W I T CH inside a painting was pretty cool. As well as the use of the last tear bringing back all the color to the land. But why Elias wanted to live out his life *inside* the painting, I can’t even imagine. And it doesn’t even seem like that interesting a time period to live inside either. I really can’t like a time period where people want to punish who they consider “witches”
Ah, W.I.T.C.H. So much of my childhood was spend obsessing over the series. The books. The comics. The cartoon. The merchandise. You name it I was into it.
So why only the three stars if I loved it so much?
Well as time went by, I grew disinterested in the series. I went along with it mainly to see how it ended. I simply wanted to know what the final outcome was.
Surely that is not enough to merit three stars? You loved it!
I did, but that was because I was a pre-teen with very low expectations. This came before my vampire-loving period, so you can imagine what my standard was like. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not bad books – they’re simply not something I can go back to now that I’m older.
Thoroughly enjoyable at the time, but not quite so much now.
Nesmím zapomenout ani na Elyon, i když udělala pár nesprávných rozhodnutí, samozřejmě i další důležité postavy : Věštce, Caleba, Joela, Orube, Cedrika, Matta, Luka, Erica, babičku Hay Lin.... Rozhodně to byla má nejoblíbenější dětská série, at už komixy nebo seriál. Doporučuji všem mladším slečnám. ;)
I have to say that this one was better than the last one I read. While the writing was just as simplistic and boring, the plot had a little more to it - there seemed to be more time spent fleshing out the mystery and building the suspense - and the characters were actually decent. Cornelia and Irma tuned down the pointless bickering and everyone worked well as a team. I also loved the idea of the painting and Elis' character was a nice touch.
Another great adventure with the WITCH girls. I liked their adventure with the painting. It was unique to this series so far and it had a bitter sweet ending. We also learn that not all metamoor people are bad or were bad. Just the change in leadership has seemed to corrupt it. I’m excited to see what is next for the WITCH girls :)
Continuing my re-read of this series, I completely forgot about Elias. I think that I like him as a character yet and am thrilled to read more about him. I didn't find book 5 to be as interesting as the last few but I still liked it.
Following on in this children’s middle grade series and loving it still. Brings back memories of my love for it. Massive difference to the TV series and so much more in depth. Strong bonds of the main characters with subtle humour and morals
This was an interesting re-read, the girls are getting better at working together and Will is really growing into her leadership role. The other girls are expanding and improving themselves a long the way as well. This tale was a brilliant and stunning story, very enjoyable and fantastic.
Believe it or not, but I am into my children's books every now and again. It always brings me back to my childhood and wraps me up in this bubble I used to be in.
This was a TV series I watched over and over again, but that's not why I gave it a high rating, oh no! The writing is detailed and full of adventure, I get totally lost in it, and although compared to adult books these are as involved, it still feels real and like you are there.
I like these novels especially the fact that there are comic inserts inside, that really add to the story, although the start of this one did not relate what-so-ever with the remainder of the book, yet I hope it comes up in a future book.
This was entertaining and had everything I expect, I love hearing from different people in the book and it makes you more attached to each of the characters.
I used to like these series. Now, I don't think they're so good anymore. I got up to number 12 or something like that, and they've gone up to #26 or something... and they're still coming out!! I'm not really interested into them anymore, but I used to be.
I loved this series! All of the different girls had their own individual personalities that made the series more enjoyable to read. Also, of course the cool magical powers was a plus. I loved the character relationships and adventures the girls got themselves into.
This book almost made me cry! This book often made me laugh. This book made me wonder. This book got me thining. I love this book and always will. I wish I could give it 10 STARS [but I can't]
