Carling is a demass-remass agent for the Coalition, able to transport herself to any location with coordinates. Recognized as a loner, she is talented enough to choose her own assignments, and spends many with negotiator M-Ran, an ethical and skilled mediator for the Coalition.
When M-Ran sends Carling to a community living in a forest, Carling is inspired by their powerful faith and unity to combine what she learns from them to her assignments and personal skills, recognizing the source of M-Ran’s convictions. With Carling’s bond as a Bramble to the green, natural world, she decides to join M-Ran as a negotiator, and put her new perception into practice. She shares her experience with her closest friend, Brann, a restless demass-remass agent who questions the Coalition’s methods.
Carling’s new awareness picks up treachery and corruption in the Coalition, so becomes a threat to unscrupulous leaders enmeshed in her organization. Brann, M-Ran, and Carling turn to their clever friend Merrill to confront the depravity of mind-warping and domination with their combined skills, as the Coalition, not recognizing or acknowledging the danger, resolves to prevent and separate them.
Allegiance and faith can spread like green brambles in a forest, creating a strength to overcome the most determined evil.
