Growing up with a cruel Alpha of a father, in a pack full of angry werewolves, Rory Beaumont taught herself to be tough, and to not trust anyone. When her father tells her that she is leaving home to go marry another Alpha’s son, she has to be smart, cautious, and resilient. A ‘mate’ is a werewolf’s soul mate. As a child Rory thought it was something to believe in. As a twenty year old, she was convinced it was just a fairy tale, and that she would never find her mate. When she does, her whole life, everything she new gets turned upside down. Especially, when he tells her he doesn’t want her.
Belonging is a fresh take on the paranormal urban fantasy genre. Rory is a kickass protagonist and shows intelligence, independence, and most importantly - growth throughout the story. I enjoyed the world, and the details woven in!
As someone who is quite critical of the urban fantasy/romance genre, this book really surprised me. Instead of telling a shallow romance where the only through line is: "I want to have sex", Kos has created characters that have honesty and growth. Of course the romance is there, but it is fueled by the characters desires and more often than not, serves as an obstacle getting in the way of the characters objective. If you're going in looking for instant gratification, this is not the book for you. If you're going in looking for a coming of age story set in the urban fantasy setting, you're in for a pleasant surprise.
I honestly couldn’t get enough of this book! It’s filled with breathtaking action, and a good hint of romance that makes you begging for more!! The author really knows how to entice the reader and I truly cant wait to see what might happen next. I would give this book a 10 out of 5 if I could!
I appreciate that our protagonists is a bit of an anti-hero. She's delt a crap hand at life and is learning how to trust and live again.
I struggled with her romantic dynamic. It felt like she wanted to be a strong independent woman but also kept falling into the damsel in distress stereotype.
Story would not pass a Bechdel test. Had frequent and sometimes distracting grammatical and spelling errors.
I already bought the second one, so I'll be reading that one too.
