Корки Пол е роден в Хараре, Зимбабве през 1951 г. Изучава изящни изкуства в Художествената школа в Дърбан и кино анимация в CalArts. Започва кариерата си в рекламата, преди да стане носител на награда за детски книги. Редовно посещава училища, за да популяризира страстта си към рисуването.

Valerie Thomas is the author of the bestselling and much loved Winnie the Witch picture books, illustrated by Korky Paul.

Valerie was born in Australia and has lived there for most of her life. Although she doesn’t have a broomstick, she has traveled to most parts of the world, and she is now trying to organize her life so that she never has to experience another winter. She used to live with a big black cat exactly like Wilbur, but luckily her house was not black.

Winnie gets a yen to explore outer space in this eleventh picture-book devoted to her doings, dragging her cat Wilbur along on the adventure. Conjuring a rocket with a flick of her wand, and packing a picnic lunch for their meal amidst the stars, our witchy heroine and her feline companion are soon jetting through the cosmos, narrowly missing any number of heavenly bodies. When they finally land on a seemingly peaceful planet for their meal, they soon find themselves surrounded by space rabbits. But these leporine aliens aren't interested in eating cabbages or carrots! No, they have a hankering for the metal of Winnie's spaceship... and have soon reduced it to pieces. Will Winnie and Wilbur ever get home again...?

The answer to that is a foregone conclusion of course, thanks to Winnie's ever-useful wand. I was struck, in the course of reading Winnie In Space, by the fact that Winnie's magic always involves a wave of her wand, and the use of the word Abracadabra. It hasn't really bothered me hitherto, and I don't have very high expectations for the magical world-building of a picture-book series, but somehow it started to feel a little repetitive this time around. Patricia Coombs' series of books about Dorrie the Little Witch - the standard by which I judge all witchy tales - never felt repetitive, despite having a particular narrative formula in which Dorrie confronted and defeated adult magical practitioners. That said, this was still an entertaining addition to the Winnie series - I chuckled at the image of the two space rabbits who managed to hitch a ride back to Earth with Winnie and Wilbur, and wonder if they'll make trouble in the future - and the artwork was as phenomenal as ever. Colorful, full of quirky details sure to please child readers, with end-papers designed by child fans (as is the case with all the Winnie books), this was a visual pleasure. I look forward to exploring the rest of the books about Winnie!

Illustrations are fab in this book! Great for cross curricular teaching, especially art and space for KS1. I would love to use this book with a KS1 drama/English group as you could act it out for a lot of fun. It uses lots of great vocabulary which would help the children remember the terms they need to know about space and the onomatopoeia adds extra fun and technique. Dont forget to skip the end to find the acrostic to help with remembering the planets.

Lucky Winnie likes spaces and the stars so she can wave her magic wand and blast off to space. The illustrations in this Winnie book are my favorite from the whole collection. I'm a space lover and you won't be disappointed if you are too. Rabbit are a cute idea, while the west sees a man on the moon, Asia (or at least Japan) see a rabbit on the moon.
The back of the book has the alchemical symbols of the nine planets with a cheat cheat of how to remember then.

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

The illustrations are cool, as always, but the story is OTT nonsensical. Even with magic.

Esta é uma das minhas obras favoritas da Bruxa Mimi, por causa das suas cores. É um livro excelente para iniciar as crianças mais pequenas sobre o sistema solar. São vários os pormenores inseridos na narrativa referentes ao Espaço. Delicioso como sempre!

Throughout this story, it explores Winnie’s obsession with space. Winnie took Wilbur her pet dog reluctantly on a great adventure to a far away planet. When they arrived, Winnie began to set out a picnic, which was interrupted by an animal that lives on this far away planet that are known as space rabbits. At this part of the story, children are engaged through the unknown of the far away planets and they are using their imagination to think about the space rabbits. This adventure made Wilbur anxious and nervous about what to expect which was made worse as the space rabbits ate metal. Therefore the space rabbits went on to eat the spaceship they needed to get home on. Winnie had to think quickly and use magic to get back home from the far away planet. The amazing illustrations show how interesting the far away planet looked but Winnie the witch realises there is no place like home.
I read this book with year two (KS1) as their topic was space. As I opened the book and showed the illustrations, they were amazed at how colourful the pages were. Each child said wow and stared with fascination. As I read on the children were laughing at the made up character of the space rabbits and that Winnie put Wilbur the dog in a spacesuit. Looking at the pictures in detail with the children, each planet was named which helped develop their knowledge on the topic. This book also expanded the children’s vocabulary as words such as asteroid and satellite have never been shown or explained to the children. Using the theme of this book can be used for all subjects as my class explore space in computing sessions they can now use algorithms and include Winnie and Wilbur, or in science the children can explore planets in more detail.
I would recommend this book to all children but to be read with time as it quite a long book if read slowly and stopping to explain certain points. I think the children in my class will be interested in reading the rest of the Winnie series as this was such an engaging and stimulating book for them.
