“Be ready with your extinguishers [you’ll be] up in flames” after reading this collection of graphic narratives curated by Kadak Collective!
When I backed this project on Kickstarter in 2018/2019, I didn’t know that I would find complete solace within its pages in 2021. I felt connected to each of the stories, they are all set in different parts of South Asia (which enriched my knowledge of the region), each and every single one of them struck a chord. The confronting and unapologetic nature of the narratives can be triggering (there is a content warning in the table of content, which is very considering for the well being of people with trauma), I was mostly struck by the constant similarities of the struggles in the region and in my own country of birth (Morocco) especially as an Amazigh woman. The project is both a beautifully colourful printed book and a very well designed website where even more stricking stories are found in the form of videos, poetry, gifs ... and so much more.
It might be called Bystander but this book does more than just witness, it is a “radical act of communication and change”.
