Don't Trust Her

Rate this book
It all begins with a little blackmail…

The blackmail letter reads, I know what you’ve done.

Court Lane has worked hard to create her fairytale life—loving and trusting husband, well-adjusted kids, safe neighborhood. So when the letter arrives at her doorstep, the message is clear—pay up or have your world destroyed. With nowhere to turn, Court succumbs to the blackmailer’s demands. But she can’t forget about the letter. It haunts her.

A girls’ weekend away offers the perfect distraction. She and her three closest friends head to a remote cabin in the Appalachians for a much-needed retreat. But the fun comes to an abrupt end when an unexpected ice storm strands them without electricity and phones.

And then one friend never wakes up.

It looks like an accident, but as secrets start to spill—secrets related to the blackmail letter—and suspicions swirl through the cabin, Court discovers her friends aren’t who she thinks they are.

And maybe, just maybe, her friend didn’t die accidentally at all.

Perhaps she was murdered.

Now, Court must decide who's lying, who's telling the truth, and who can be trusted. Otherwise, she could be the next to die.

Innovative premise with a lot of moving parts. The characters are well-developed, and much of what initially reads as, perhaps, “awkward”, eventually gives the reader an “ohhhhhh” moment as it comes together. I enjoyed the first 3/4 of the book, but when this author wrapped things up, she did so by providing a long and exhausting narrative that, to me, read as a lazy summary of what could have been written as a profound conclusion.

Good beach read with revolving perspectives that will definitely keep you guessing!

Thank you for the ARC of this book I really enjoyed it
These friends start out on a girls getaway and you think that sounds cool no kids or husbands. But this is not cool at all ! Wow this was a real thriller and page turner and a lot of secrets come out. They are stuck there due to bad weather and that ends up being the least of their worries as the story unwinds with some whopper lies. There’s a lot going on in this book and I highly recommend it.

Court Lane, a wife and mother of two, goes on a girls weekend trip with her friends to a cabin in the mountains. This weekend is filled with secrets, lies and blame.

I liked this book cause all the secrets had me turning the pages til the very end. This book is full of twists and turns. It has short chapters and was easy to read. The characters were very likable. I like Ms. Boyles style of writing, I hope she writes more books like this.

I enjoyed this book fully and I think anyone who reads this will too. 5stars, i highly recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense.

“I know what you’ve done…”

“Do you think that you could ever forgive someone for hurting you so badly that you want to erase that pain from existence?”

“It’s time for one of you to pay.”

This was a new author for me. And she does a fantastic job of keeping the pages flying. The characters were all well developed and realistic. The dialogue also felt genuine (loved all the y’all’s!). I also enjoyed the Alabama setting.

This book is a psychological thriller that had the feel of an author like Gillian Flynn. The book is mostly happening in real time but there are also flashbacks that do a great job tying it all together. I also loved how she mentioned Christopher Pike, an author I devoured in my middle school years. This book had echoes of his book Slumber Party but was a very adult book.

What kept this from being a 5 star review from me was that I guessed the big reveals early on. But I was glad to be right and there are a lot of clues out there. And it was well executed and entertaining.

I was able to read this book as an advanced reader.
The book had me hooked from the beginning. Oh I could add so many spoilers, but I won’t.
I got half way through the book and if it ended there, it would have been great but the author just kept the surprises coming.
A mystery, wives of xxx street, thriller all mixed into one.
Don’t Trust Her is a good book. Help the author take it to the top. It’s a best seller already.

This book is about 3 childhood friends that have grown up and are married. A new friend is added to the trio and fits in. Fast forward a year and the girls are having a weekend away at the cabin of the new friend. All 4 of them are hiding a secret that will change what each of them think of the others. The ice storm that traps them at the cabin adds to the panic that they are feeling.

Elizabeth Boles develops characters well, you feel like you know them. A very thrilling plot that will keep you in suspense till the end. A fast pace story. Looking forward to more of her written work.

A great thought provoking mystery thriller.

Court Lane is being blackmailed. The demand is simple, pay up or have her life destroyed that she has worked very hard to build. When the girls' trip comes up, she sees this as an opportunity to unwind and relax with her 3 best friends. But then something goes wrong and one ends up dead. Now stuck in the cabin, she has to figure out what truly happened while the secrets come out.

I was invested in this from the first chapter itself. The book is well written with detailed descriptions of scenes and places. I could picture every bit of it in my head. The amount of planning and research that went in this book is evident with the way it is executed.
The characters are morally grey. There's not a single person you can point to and say that they're good, but at the same time, you cannot completely condemn their actions, except for maybe one. I was in a dilemma throughout the course of this book, because I couldn't decipher my own feelings.
This book actually makes you think. I found myself wondering time and again as to what I would do if I were in that situation. It also highlighted certain issues like gender bias, where a guy and a girl are equally responsible for a certain act, but it's only the girl who is shamed and bullied.
There's also mention of men preying on kids. Also, every person you consider a friend may not really be one. People can be good on the surface but harbour tendencies that can be harmful.
I had predicted a major secret and some of the happenings very early on, but in no way did it dampen the effects when they were revealed.
I enjoyed this book, but the only thing that didn't work for me was the injustice that happened. A person who truly should have paid for their actions, went scott free, but someone who had their life destroyed, still ended up suffering even more. Though their way of bringing out the truth was wrong, the person didn't deserve that kind of end.
But, I guess that's how real life works too at times.
Overall, this book has everything you need in a good mystery thriller and I recommend it to everyone who enjoys the genre.

I started this book not really knowing what to expect. As I got further along, the story really drew me in. As shown the early stages of "Court's life" really defined who she was. Once she received the blackmail letter she really looked hard at herself even after paying the requested amount.

Her continued recollection of the accident where both her sister and father died really affected her. After awhile she and a group of friends were going to Paige's mountain cabin to celebrate Paige's birthday. This was supposed to be a time of joy with all he friends. Things did not work out exactly as planned and recollections of earlier times at high school brought out memories that everyone wished had been forgotten.

The day after they arrived, they discovered that one of their party died in addition they became stranded because of an ice storm which is rare in the South. Friction between the friends became obvious the more time went by.

To discover what the blackmail related to, who died at the cabin and who Charlotte was in the story, then you must read it. It is worth your time.

This book was very well written and had a very good story/plot. I wasn’t able to fully connect to the characters but it did not take away from the story. I’ve been reading a lot of ya fantasy so this was a good refresher on something else.

I received an arc from the author for an honest review.

This story follows Court Lane a housewife living a seemingly perfect life. She is married to her loving husband Tal, has 2 wonderful kids and has 3 great best friends or so she thinks. Court receives a letter from a blackmailer threatening her to pay $10,000 or her secrets will be exposed. Court succumbs to the demands but things still don't sit well with her.

Court is invited to her best friend Paige's birthday weekend at her secluded cabin and she accepts hoping this weekend could help her get her mind off of things. Things seem to be going great until a severe ice storm hits and the friends are stuck at the cabin with no way to leave. Little did they know things could get worse with one of the friends not waking up.

Secrets start spilling and the friends realize that everyone not be who they seem to be and that maybe Paige may have been murdered...

Am I ever glad I took a break from romance and dabble into a mystery thriller. This book sends you on a crazy ride of emotion. Your brain is constantly turning trying to solve all the mysteries. This book is a must read as it keeps you constantly on the edge and the author only releases information little by little. This book may have peeked my interest into this genre!

Court and Tal live in Huntsville, Alabama along with their children Jonas and Haley Ray. Court’s twin sister, Brittany, died years ago in a car crash that also killed her father and injured her mother. Today, Court does all she can to care for her mother and sees that she has groceries and eats properly.

Court, Faith, and Blanche have been friends since they were small. Their new friend, Paige, has invited them to spend a weekend in her cabin for the weekend to celebrate Paige’s 35th birthday. Paige is quite wealthy and the cabin is magnificent, but remote.

Their first night after enjoying a lovely dinner, Paige insists that they play a game she has brought. It makes them uncomfortable because it’s like a confession game and each of them is being secretly blackmailed. When an ice storm hits, they find themselves stranded, but Paige assures them that the generator will provide the electricity they need. The next morning, one of them is dead. Was it accidental or murder?

The story switches back and forth from the time Court, Brittany, Faith, and Blanche were all in high school together to the present day. They soon learn that some actions have consequences.

There are a lot of twists and turns in this story and makes one think how you really define a friend. It had me turning pages and looking over my shoulder. Enjoy, readers!

Deadly Secrets

Court has a good life, a healthy little boy Jonah and a loving husband Tah. Life is good for Court.

Paige one of Court's friends has invited Court, Faith and Blanche for a weekend girls' getaway at her mountain cabin. Sounds like a fun time for all. That is before an ice storm hits and they are stranded with no phone and no internet.

Secrets start coming out and it becomes very tense in the cabin. When one of them turns up dead it looks suspicious. The other three try to leave but just end up wrecking the car. They are stuck with each other until the ice melts, however one of them may be a murderer.

Was the death really a murder? Will the other three make it out alive, and if they do will one confess to the murder?

This was a thriller filled with secrets and action. It was a good read and I would recommend it.

I admit that when I first began to read “Don’t Trust Her”, it seemed a little slow and predictable, even figured out the big secret very early on; but I confess that several chapters in made me backtrack on my assumptions. The author intertwines the subplots with the story line in such a way as to keep the reader involved in the undercurrents of the plot. Each time I thought I had understood were the author was going , I was given a new twist to add to the process. Early the characters seemed shallow and uninteresting, but the author develops each within the twists so that the story begins to match the exposure of the characters. I won’t go into the plot because too much would expose the surprises, but if you like a suspense novel without the blood and gore, with strong plot twists, you will enjoy this story.

After Court gives in to her blackmailer's demand of money in exchange for keeping her secret, she begins to filter through the people in her life who could possibly know. Getting ready for a trip with her best friends has Court on edge, especially since she suspects it is one of them. But when an unexpected snowstorm leaves them stranded and secrets are revealed, Court realizes that she doesn't really know her friends at all. And what happens when her big secret is finally revealed?

I thought this was a great read and it was hard to put down. Told between past and present, the story shows the friendship between the girls as teens, and the secret that ties them all together. This book has a lot of twists and surprises and it shows you how far people will go to keep their secret hidden.

They share secrets about their lives and some shared events from High School and then we learn that three of them have been blackmailed by someone. The plot seems predictable but then it twists and we don’t know what to expect. One of them turns up dead it looks like it maybe suicide but it is questionable. This book did a great job of pulling the wool out under me, the only thing that didn't make me give it five stars was the whole Britney killed Paige. Despite the narrator being a trustworthy narrator, she kind flips the script at the end by saying she did it. However, I don't buy the idea the narrator wouldn't once think or hint to her being the one to do it in her own POV. Other than that, it's all good. I believed the whole Courtney was Britney, I bought faith going a bit crazy with fear, but despite the fact I was convinced it wasn't Faith or the other girl. I never suspected Paige herself before the Main character. Again, I can't believe she wouldn't have mentioned that in her own POV but okay. Still good though.

I really enjoyed this book. Like who did it? Who was there when it was done? What did you see? Why did you do it? Did you do it? A weekend which was going to be a great reunion between 4 old friends turns into a weekend of cat and mouse and full of questions that had remained unanswered for 20 years. On top of an ice storm that lasts for too many days. Who ends up dead, who tells the truth and how are they all going to end up innocent? Question after unanswered question. Like the title says "Don't Trust Her."

Don't Trust Her is an amazing thriller with plenty of twists and turns. All the characters were incredibly well-written, and I liked that the story went back and forth between the past and the present. I had a hard time putting this one down because I really wanted to know everyone's secrets and find out how everything would turn out. The ending was great, and I didn't see it coming at all. I know what you've done...
When Court gets a letter that begins with this phrase, she panics and pays the hush money in bitcoin in an attempt to salvage the seemingly perfect life she's set up for herself. But she can't escape it forever. One weekend, her friend Paige invites Court, Blanche, and Faith to her cabin. But tensions are running high and, the next morning, one of the four doesn't wake up. Then everything else goes wrong. What really caused the woman's death? Can Court salvage her friendships and make it out alive?

This was a good read! I'm incredibly impressed by the twists, which surprised me every time! As someone who reads thrillers quite a lot, it starts to become exhausting when every "twist" is predictable. The author strayed from the expected path, leaving you guessing and gasping at the twists.

Without spoiling anything, I even found the identity of the person who died surprising. The story was well set up, with each change in the weather or conditions in the house furthering the plot and leading us towards the next discovery or event.

Truly, I don't have any major complaints in terms of the thriller aspects. However, there were some things mentioned in passing that could have been reviewed further, preferably by a sensitivity reader.
- The mention of Faith's weight was hurtful. Her jacket "strains against hips that shuffle as if she's trying to burn calories while standing on my porch. Faith is that friend we all have who can never lose weight." It feels as if these mentions of weight are always limited to a female character. Especially since this book is a thriller, Court's rude description of her friend didn't serve to further the story and really speaks more to her character. I do not analyze or really notice my friends' weight. Let's leave the pushing for weight loss in the past, please.
- Again, with the descriptions of Black people as compared to food. Especially since he was such a minor character, Terry was the focus of multiple stereotypes that were entirely unnecessary. His "irises (were) the color of dark walnut" and... he's gay because he called someone "my lady?"
- The way the girls talked about the game, Game Against People (Cards Against Humanity anyone?), they say that the game was made by racists and homophobes and makes everyone who plays look like one as well... and that it makes people show their true colors. Either this should have simply been rephrased or we're actually being told the characters are racist and homophobic. Additionally, the conflict that arose from this game didn't seem to be resolved.
- "I piddle in his office a couple of days a week." Do I really need to explain this one?
- This is minor but, instead of insisting on saying "he or she," it's easy to say "they."

Final Rating: 3.5/5

Moves quickly along and is a deceiving mild opening. Four friends, a weekend away in the mountains to celebrate a birthday. By the time the weekend ends, secrets and blackmail and lies and murder all have a turn to be experienced.

Great ending even if it’s a little contrived. Just goes to show that nothing is ever really over.
