This book follows canon very closely. It has few surprises but tries to keep us interested as Elizabeth (and we) wait impatiently for Darcy to find a moment to actually propose.

Hunsford is in the past and Lydia's elopement has been dealt with. Jane and Bingley are engaged and plan a ball (at Darcy's suggestion) to celebrate that event. As the Bingley sisters have refused to return to Netherfield with their brother Jane (and her mother) are in charge of planning for the ball. So we read of times together among family, friends and acquaintances and as guests arrive.

The ball has several unwanted guests arriving and a letter from Lady Catherine has two guests leaving the ball and traveling through the night. Elizabeth is now fearful that the private meeting Darcy requested will never be as his aunt may use Anne's condition to force what years have not produced.

This tale is placid. Darcy's not wanting to accept gratitude is not new. But Mr. Bennet is more perceptive than he is in canon.

This was a quick read and had a wedding night with MA scenes. An epilogue looks into the future.

Lory Lilian demonstrates her mastery of the art of the Big Tease in this one, that's for sure! Between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, we are treated to much heartfelt yearning, innumerable heated looks, light touches, unspoken messages passed with glances, spoken messages passed in company via private code, etc., etc. The book takes its sweet time about getting to an actual kiss and marriage proposal, and then quickly on to marriage and the bedroom.

The reasons for the delay are numerous. At first, Darcy is waiting to be certain he won't get rebuffed this time, which is understandable. Much of the time, others are nearby. When Darcy and Elizabeth are finally alone and he seems about to get to the point, someone unexpectedly intrudes on their solitude. Later, an express arrives with news that requires immediate attention.

The plot is simple. When Mr. Bingley returned to Netherfield, Mr. Darcy did not accompany him. Lady Catherine already came to Longbourn and had her memorable conversation with Elizabeth. As the story begins, wedding plans are underway for Jane and Mr. Bingley. Elizabeth is desperate for news of Darcy, while the besotted Bingley is too easily distracted to provide much information. He receives a letter from his friend offering congratulations and suggesting that he hold a ball in Jane's honor at Netherfield, which begins a new swirl of activity.

Darcy arrives before the ball, of course, which is two weeks prior to the wedding. The atmosphere between him and Elizabeth is sensually charged every time they're near. She hopes and wishes what she senses in him is real but, as a woman, she can't assume that until he declares himself with more than his steamy gazes. Many, many pages describe her thoughts of uncertainty, frustration and desire for Mr. Darcy.

That's basically the entire story. Most of the obstacles between them are due to social convention and not that serious. There are some notable scenes- the best of which are when Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam both give Caroline Bingley a verbal smackdown (she's pretty insufferable the entire book), when Elizabeth confronts Wickham with a stern warning, and especially when Mrs. Bennet (of all people!) tells Wickham to shut up already about Mr. Darcy. Lady Catherine stays offstage but still manages to create one of the obstacles delaying the inevitable. Mr. Bennet becomes suspicious when he realizes how close the Gardiners and Darcy have become, and he knows Darcy was there when Elizabeth received Jane's express in Lambton. Other than that, it's the Bennets preparing for a ball and a wedding.

I enjoy when a book builds up anticipation before Darcy and Elizabeth finally come to an understanding, and this is very well written. It is certainly rated MA, as there is a tastefully explicit bedroom scene at the end after they marry. However, the whole book is a very, very long bit of foreplay that takes forever to climax. I enjoyed it, but I finished it with a sense that something was missing, like I'd had too much dessert and not enough dinner. This plot needs more meat to be truly satisfying.

3.5 stars-- this was a really enjoyable, slightly altered ending to Pride and Prejudice, and IDK guys, apparently I am becoming a sucker for this kind of story in my dotage.

A simple definition of life: The chance you've been waiting for. ~ Robert Brault

The theme of this story: Overabundance of caution!

Darcy who has been once refused – definitely, non-mistakably, unequivocally refused – has an overabundance of caution in speaking a second time to Elizabeth Bennet.

But … Elizabeth gives every indication possible for a genteel young lady in that era. She does everything but stand on her head to hint she would respond differently to a second proposal.

I was reminded of the Mock Turtle’s song:

Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join the dance?
Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, won't you join the dance?
~ Lewis Carroll

Darcy & Elizabeth: will you … or won’t you?

This is a low angst, low action story that seemed to drag in places.

We have the Bingley shrew … uh, our dear Caroline … causing as much commotion as she can. She is aided in her struggles by several visiting London friends, including a male friend who shows interest in Elizabeth.

We have a GREAT scene with Elizabeth and her brother Wickham: a conversation I’ve never read before in JAFF. And we have an even better scene with Mama Bennet that to me was worth the price of admission. LOVED IT!!

I have spent my days stringing and unstringing my instrument, while the song I came to sing remains unsung. ~Tagore

Waiting for the other shoe to drop

We know (or do we) that there is going to be a HEA. So what problem, major and minor, will ODC run in to?

Well I won’t tell, but ODA (our dear author) will write brilliant conversation, fill the pages with easily experienced emotions, and give her characters their own unique and consistent voice. As with all her books, the reading journey is sublime.

Enjoyable Read

I did enjoy this book, though not as much as some others by the same author. This is basically a sweet read, with most of the difficulty being Lizzie's lack of confidence in Darcy's love, and Darcy wanting to do everything right this time. I did enjoy all the catch-ups in the epilogue. This is well worth reading.

Ardently Enjoyed this Book. Of Love Between our Dear Couple

This is a wonderful, well written book that shows the passion of our dear couple for one another. The words convey the deep feelings for one another. The obstacles are more delays and obstruction of people like Mr. Collins and Lady Catherine. Mr. Collins is put in his place.

The author writes incredibly well in English, even though English is probably a secondary language.

I like it that Mrs. Bennet, while still excitable shows more understanding and sense in this book than so often. I praise the excellent handling of her character.

This book fits close to cannon via a period glossed over quickly in Jane Austen’s book. Elizabeth’s wedding is after Jane’s here and not at the same time. We are kept waiting and wondering if Darcy will return from Lady Catherine and the very ill Ann.

This is an enjoyable read and is great for relaxation and pleasure after reading tense books. Loved it.

I am ambivalent about this book. Really wanted to love it...

Entered with the bethrotal of Jane and Bingley, after lady Catherine's visit to Longbourne. Mr Darcy was taking his time returning from London, wrecking havoc with Elizabeth's emotions and insecurities.
When he finally arrived, interruptions and perfectionism disrupt Elizabeth's equilibrium.
Bingley was holding a ball in his fiancee's honour, inviting guests from town, the Bingley sisters and the Colonel. Caroline, being her unpalatable self, was dealt with (love the Colonel) even if she had some back ups from town. Loved that Darcy was voicing his opinions and defended Elizabeth on more than one occasion.
Some unvited guests makes an appearance and an express for Darcy forces him to leave the neighbourhood.
The Gardiner's makes a good impression, especially mrs G was a comfort to Elizabeth but mrs Bennet was a surprise towards the end. Love surprises though.
Ends with an HEA and an epilogue 9 years hence.

I somehow expected a lot of sighing, maybe because of the title, but it was more oofs than sighs and I think "admired from afar" probably would have been more descriptive.
Brilliant writing not withstanding, I am a tad dissatisfied...

3.5* rounded up to 4.

Pros
-Mr. Bennet: As usual, he was my favourite character. Lory took his curmudgeonly attitude and ramped it up to a wonderful degree!

“Mr. Bennet intervened. “Upon my word, what comes of our world if we judge a man’s worthiness by the number of young ladies he entertains? Every time I hear of a ball, I am tempted to fall ill. Not that anyone would expect me to entertain any woman. But the mere idea of spending a night trying to please people of whose pleasure you do not care is tiresome and ridiculous.” “Papa, you are too harsh on balls,” Elizabeth said with a laugh. “Well deserved, my dear, as balls are too harsh on me too.” Mr. Bennet then turned his attention to his glass of brandy.”

“Did Miss Darcy not want to attend the ball?” Jane asked. “She would have liked to meet you, Miss Bennet, and to renew her acquaintance with Miss Elizabeth. But my sister is not yet out, and she is not fond of large gatherings.” “I can well understand her,” Mr. Bennet answered in earnest. “I have been ‘out’ for more than thirty years, and I am still not fond of large gatherings. It is such a pity that nobody believes me or takes my preferences into consideration, for I am dragged against my will to all kinds of balls and parties.”

-The writing is on par for the time

-Darcy is cute… If not himself

“Elizabeth constantly felt Darcy’s insistent glances and even met them occasionally. He seemed amused and pleased to see her in the midst of such animated conversation. He even intervened a couple of times, not by supporting her directly but by asking questions that allowed her to prove her point of view. She relished the little scheme they shared—a mutual and silent understanding unnoticed by the company.”

-Good quotes

“True love is different from infatuation,” Bingley said seriously. “You cannot confuse them. You know when your heart belongs to someone forever and nothing else matters.”

Cons
–Elizabeth swooning: Elizabeth seems to be swooning around all the time, and that just isn’t her character! She’s strong and determined, not soft and starry eyed!

-I thought we may have skipped over the whole Wickham situation… No such luck.

-This line. Ha ha! (Okay, this isn’t a Con. This line just made me laugh!!)

“A man of the world knows too well that he will never win a woman’s heart by attacking a man she favours. A young lady rarely changes her opinion so quickly and so thoroughly. Besides, a group of men arguing is different. We all know men are hasty, unwise, and even aggressive at times and do stupid things. But beautiful, delicate ladies behaving in such a manner is somewhat disturbing!”

-lots of uses of endearment “my darling” between Jane and Lizzie? I feel like “darling” is a strange term of endearment for your sister… Maybe that’s just me.

-When thing get hot and heavy with Lizzie and Darcy,

“She sensed his caresses, his kisses, his scent, his strength—his ardent love.”

My note on this quote was “… Is that what the kids are calling it these days?? 😂😂”

All in all a well done variation!

Lory Lillian is one of my absolute favourite authors in this genre so I was very excited to read this book and the only disappointing thing about it is that it's not very long! However, for the story being told, it was absolutely perfect. The story has a lovely pace.

The story starts following Lady Catherine's visit and he has not returned. Elizabeth now realising her feelings is suffering. Jane and Bingley are to be married... surely he will come? Of course he does! However, when he arrives is he is the same lovely version of himself that Elizabeth encountered at Pemberley, but she doesn't know what that means. Is there any chance of a second proposal? The tension between Darcy and Elizabeth is amazing. This author can create so much feeling by a look or a touch of an ungloved hand. Just incredible. By the time the end of the book is drawing to a conclusion, I was holding my kindle so tight I swear I almost broke it as I'm waiting to see what's going to happen!

There are a large number of characters in this book, some existing, some new. Of the new characters there isn't an overly complicated 'who's who', but enough dialogue to know who is nice and who is not! Elizabeth and Darcy are lovely, both certain of their own feelings but a little unsure of the the feelings of the other to make for an interesting but relatively angst free tale.

Turmoil before happiness

Lovely story.

I like how on different occasions we can see Jane, Mrs Bennet and Elizabeth expressing themselves very directly and without pause going against someone saying or doing a stupid thing.

Impressions:
I loved Mr Bennett in this story.
Mrs Bennett was a surprise esp towards the end when she scolded Mr Wickham!
Colonel Fitzwilliam criticizing the well bred ladies for their not so well bred behavior towards Jane and Elizabeth.
The lead up to the ball and then the anticlimactic ending…what a tease.
A lovely epilogue.

If there was one phrase to sum up this Pride and Prejudice variation, it would be ask her to marry you already! This story picks up after Bingley proposes to Jane and they are planning a wedding. Darcy was not able to visit to propose to Elizabeth but she wants him to. When he finally comes to town, there is always something or someone in the way. Everything comes to point at the end as they ardently love each other.

Definitely a 5 star read. All the drama, angst, wit, and romance needed in a book. I particularly loved the dinner scene at Netherfield with all of its interesting banter. I also enjoyed a stronger Mrs. Bennet. She was refreshing. A wonderful book!

It was ok

A quick read and mainly was must a lot of fluff without a complex plot. Wished for Darcy’s POV. I thought Elizabeth’s character was a bit not true to her P&P character a few times (sort of acted like a whiny teenager a couple of times). But the book had some good parts that were fun to read. Towards the end though, I was just looking forward to finishing it and calling it done so that i can move on to the next book.

Title and Author: Ardently Loved by Lory Lilian
Type: Pride and Prejudice Variation
Perspective: Elizabeth
Romance Level: mostly passionate kissing but chapter 13 includes a wedding night description that could be skipped (don't miss the epilogue)
Recommended: yes, 2.5 star

Summary: This variation takes place after Bingley returns to Netherfield and becomes engaged to Jane. What if Darcy was not reassured by Lady Catherine's visit and report of her conversation with Elizabeth? Bingley gives a ball to celebrate his engagement and only then does Darcy return. How will the couple reach an understanding in the midst of their friend's happiness? I enjoyed this one, but not as much as many others.

Things I Liked:
* Elizabeth really knows her feelings for Darcy in this one. Even not so subtle conversations are not enough to reassure her of Darcy's feelings.
* Darcy is more publicly open about Elizabeth in this one. He speaks highly of her and supports her thoughts.

Things I Didn't Like:
* We hear a lot of inner dialogue here while Elizabeth is eagerly waiting Darcy's return. I like hear that she knows what she wants, but the angst last a really long time.
* Caroline and Louisa were especially awful in this one. It is hard to imagine even Bingley allowing them to be so outspoken and rude.

This was a sweet look into Elizabeth and Darcy’s romance. The story takes place after Jane and Bingley get engaged, but elongated the amount of time between that engagement and Liz and Darcy’s by many months. It was a very sweet story written in the style of Austen. You get to see Liz dig deeper into her feelings and realize just how much she loves him. You get to see Mr. Darcy be truly smitten and supportive of Liz. There are many adorable scenes between the two of them—more stolen glances, hands touching, and dancing.

While I enjoyed this story, I also found it a bit too sweet at times. It was overly romantic with some of the verbiage used. Overall, it is a really nice retelling-style book about Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. If you’re a huge P&P fan, I definitely recommend to give this a try!

Enjoyed it!!! Elizabeth has to fall in love!!

Instead of Darcy coming straight to Elizabeth after lady Catherine's rant, he waits. He comes but he is more subtle and unsure of himself. I LOVED it!!! Elizabeth is forced to have the turmoil and feelings of unrequited love, I said FEELINGS of unrequited love. Her deep love becomes believable instead of seeing his home and then she is in love! It was fun to see them flirt and be uncomfortable around each other. I loved how fitzwilliam was with Mrs. Bennet. AND I was grateful that Lory Lilian let us know there was an adult scene In the last chapter and we could skip it. I skipped the scene and it was bliss!! Definitely a nice clean beautiful pride and prejudice variation!

A Long Ending

At the end of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice Fitzwilliam Darcy and Charles Bingley return to Longbourn together and are both engaged to be married within a few days of each other. In this tale, Fitzwilliam Darcy does not return with Charles Bingley, he is remains in London for several weeks and by the time he returns to Longbourn, Jane Bennet and Charles Bingley’s wedding plans are well underway. In this prolonged lead up to their engagement, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy have several weeks of interaction before their engagement. It is a sweet story and at times difficult for the main characters. Overall I think its a good story and I enjoyed it.

The story is thirteen chapters and an epilogue.
I liked the idea that the author did not pollute this variation with a bunch of new characters. I like my tales to stay close to canon, simply switching up one event, which changes the trajectory but not the outcome of the tale.
Ms. Lilian's tale is relatively typo free, a fact I appreciate.
The HEA is satisfying.
The only thing I found a bit disconcerting was a blizzard in Hertfordshire. It is not as if the southern shires could not have their snowstorms, but a blizzard and it being snowing for 2 weeks was questionable. The only blizzard in Hertfordshire of which I am aware was in 1881. Otherwise, the story was a fun read.

Insipid characters, no real tension

Nicely written, although there are a few editing errors, including one where Kitty is both married and the only one remaining home. Of course, it's really Mary. Mrs. Bennet is the most interesting and sensible of the Bennets. That says a lot! Lori Lilian usually has great plots with not the best editing. Still, edited well enough to always be worth reading. I'd skip this one but don't want to imply that this is reflective of all of her efforts. And the fact that she continues to make the effort is greatly appreciated.

Delving I to the mind of Elizabeth

This story starts with Bingley and Jane engaged. While Darcy had returned briefly but leaves to attend to business in London. Lady C pay her visit but unlike canon Darcy does not return immediately. What follows is the story of how ODC gets their HEA with a heavy focus on Elizabeth’s thoughts and feelings during this time. Very entertaining story with some angst that is quickly resolved

Meh

I’ve read all over the spectrum of JAFF, and this one was enjoyable! It was pure fluff (even the ‘angst’ was fluffy) and didn’t have any kind of complex plot. Although I liked it, I got distracted every time the author used the word “ardent” or a phrase containing it. They needed to CTRL+F and replace (frankly) all of them. It distracted me too much! But otherwise, a fine choice.

I know, only three stars

I kept reading and kept reading and it was day after day of Elizabeth fretting and worry and disparaging of whether Darcy will ever return, propose again, does he still love her. When indications are clear he does more worrying at every turn if he is sincere and won’t change his mind. I found the book trying even though it contained some good parts. Some of the dialogue to me was juvenile.

This variation is well written but I don't see the point. Lory Lilian invents new complications and insecurities between ODC after the visit of Lady Catherine to Longbourn. When Darcy is about to confess his love at too long last, guess what? An annoying character pops out of the blue to prevent ODC to reach an agreement... I am tired of these too common cheap tricks. Lory Lilian is a talented author though and her variations are always worth a read.

Good story, but...

I enjoyed this story, but somehow feel let down a bit. I guess I have enjoyed several of this author’s other stories of ODC more. Also surprised by several glaring typos, not usually part of her books. But still, it is a solid work, just not particularly outstanding.

Loved, loved, loved reading this book on a dreary Sunday evening. I loved the interaction between Darcy and Elizabeth, but the way Mrs. Bennett set down Mr. Wickham was priceless. She didn't allow Lydia to defend him. Elizabeth, Mr.Bennett, and the Gardeniers were astounded.

This P&P variation starts after the visit of lady Catherine to Longbourn, and Jane and Bingley are betrothed. But Darcy has not returned, yet. Various obstacles occur to the happy ending for Darcy and Elizabeth.
An enjoyable story though I would have liked more villains to balance the sweetness.
(The epilogue mentioning Mary's marriage to yet another vicar was not necessary.)
