The methodical world of rich, proud Fitzwilliam Darcy is in chaos: a country lady of modest origins has utterly captivated him.
The knowledge that Elizabeth Bennet is an unsuitable match fails to diminish Darcy’s fascination for her, nor does his self-imposed distance from the lady hinder her ability to intrude upon his thoughts at all hours of the day. What can solve his dilemma?
When circumstances compel Darcy’s return to Hertfordshire in assistance of his friend Mr. Bingley, he must confront his unfathomable attraction to Miss Elizabeth.
In this "Pride & Prejudice" Regency novella, one afternoon spent in company with Miss Elizabeth Bennet is enough to make an indelible and life-altering impression upon Darcy, setting him on a rocky course towards the fulfillment of his desires. Will Darcy attain happiness, or will his ingrained pride be his downfall?
When not writing, Award-winning Regency romance author Kelly Miller spends her free time singing, playing the piano, reading, and amusing her dogs. Like a much loved Jane Austen character, she is an excellent walker.
Her Austenesque Regency romances have won first place honors from: Chanticleer International Book Awards, Royal Dragonfly Book Awards, Indies Today Book Awards, Incipere Book Awards, and Firebird Book Awards.
I am a big fan of Kelly Miller’s Jane Austen retellings and this one did not disappoint! Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley are out in the country looking for a new property for Mr. Bingley to lease. Mr. Bennett takes them on a tour of one such property along with Elizabeth, who is quite knowledgeable in the affairs of the property as well as books and other interesting topics. Mr. Darcy is intrigued, but unfortunately her family’s fortunes are not suitable for her to be an appropriate match. Upon returning home Bingley’s sisters inform him they are very upset that their brother is interested in Jane and how this will ruin the family. Perhaps Mr. Darcy now has a chance to wander into Elizabeth’s circle once again.
I love the way that this variation, like Miller’s other P&P variations, perfectly capture the style of the period writing. I find myself completely immersed in the wonderfully described setting and characters, and enjoying the twists on the familiar story all P&P fans know and love. She writes Elizabeth’s bright charm so wonderfully, and Darcy’s firm insistence he cannot possible like the woman, while being utterly unable to stop thinking about her, is spot on, too. I liked the way in this variation, Georgiana (one of my favorite characters!) is stronger and more forward with her brother in insisting he discuss matters with her as an adult. Darcy’s scene with Mr. Collins was a personal favorite! The drama that occurs as a result of Caroline Bingley’s machinations was especially fun to read, as always.

Bypassing that infamous first meeting in Austen’s original Pride & Prejudice, Kelly Miller’s Mr. Darcy finds her Miss Elizabeth more than tolerable and a dazzling temptation when he hears her delectable laugh and her sparkling intelligence and wit one memorable afternoon touring the Netherfield estate. A new approach from the beginning launches the variation onto a new path when less pride displayed and less prejudiced given still does not lead to an easier path to love and understanding.
Fitzwilliam Darcy has agreed to accompany his friend, Charles Bingley, on a tour of a Hertfordshire estate that Charles is interested in leasing. When the steward is unavailable, a neighboring estate owner and his daughter are there to greet them, give them the tour, and respond to any questions. Charles is enthusiastic about the neighbors and the estate and Darcy even finds himself well pleased to be in good company if country gentry in manner. The Bennets are not unaware of his wealth and status, but they are natural with him and Charles and Elizabeth, in particular, is knowledgeable about the Netherfield estate and estate management in general. Darcy is strongly attracted for the first time ever, but is convinced that a lady with Elizabeth’s lower connections is not for him so he goes back to London intending to stay away.
However, a pleading visit from Charles’ sister Caroline to rescue Charles and the family from ignominy and a further plea from Georgiana to include her in helping with the situation has him reluctantly rejoining Charles at Netherfield, but this time with Georgiana who has already surprised him with her mature observations. Darcy is supposed to be watching Charles and the eldest Miss Bennet to detect if she is wrong for him, and indeed, he is distracted by the uncouth behavior of Mrs. Bennet and the younger Miss Bennets, but in truth, his focus is right back on Miss Elizabeth who he was unable to put out of his mind no matter how hard he tried. The longer he is in her presence, he wonders why he should resist.
A Consuming Love is a rather gently paced, low-angst tale that focuses on a change of heart and mind, first for Darcy, but Elizabeth as well. The story was fascinating the way it starts before the events of the original and finishes just after the Netherfield Ball. There were some iconic scenes like the confrontation with Lady Catherine and with Miss Bingley for Elizabeth, and oh yes, Darcy with the Bennet parents as well as the startling scene he experienced when he was private with Elizabeth. And those acerbic scenes balanced out the swoony romance that was unbalanced for the longest time until Darcy was able to prove he was the man for Elizabeth.
Harry Frost is not an unfamiliar narrator to me. I have loved his work from the first time and appreciate the way he matches well with the characters and the story. The entire story is from Fitzwilliam Darcy’s POV so Harry Frost was a fab choice to tell his story.
All in all, this quick novella was a light, warmhearted pleasure that I enjoyed. I can recommend it to other Austenesque fans as well as sweet historical romance lovers as an appreciative audience.
I have read the other 3 of this author's published stories and enjoyed all of them. I loved the Darcy in this story as we read of his thoughts about Elizabeth. He does have a period of resisting his feelings due to her family's behavior and her lack of connections.
Darcy and Elizabeth meet as he accompanies Bingley to Netherfield to tour the property Bingley is thinking of leasing. Mr. Bennet and Elizabeth are in the steward's quarters awaiting their arrival as the steward needed to attend his wife. Elizabeth knows as much about Netherfield as her father and is not afraid to offer her opinions.
When Darcy realizes that he is in danger of falling for Elizabeth he decides not to stay with Bingley at Netherfield and returns to London. It is there that Georgiana confronts him about sharing what is obviously bothering him. (Ramsgate is in the past.) He decides to open up to her and even admits he wants to offer for Elizabeth.
They travel back to Netherfield and we again have a proposal in which Darcy states all the reasons for his hesitation. And again Elizabeth turns him down, pointing out all her reasons for such.
Darcy quickly decides to stay and make changes in his attitude and his behavior. Wickham is also in the area and the Colonel arrives to help keep that man in his place. I loved Darcy's discussion with both Mr. and Mrs. Bennet when at Bingley's ball the youngest 3 daughters display lack of accomplishments and bad behavior.
This was a lovely, sweet and short story with an epilogue. Well done. I highly recommend this story.
In a deft swerve from canon, Darcy meets Elizabeth under more favorable circumstances and recognizes her worth immediately. Rather than Mr. Morris, it's Mr. Bennet and Elizabeth who show Netherfield to Mr. Bingley when he's considering leasing it and, in this instance, he's accompanied by his friend, Mr. Darcy. Without Elizabeth's mother or her embarrassing younger sisters around and with Mr. Darcy in a better frame of mind, the sparks get flying between them at once.
Unfortunately, the daughter of a mere country gentleman is not suitable marriage material for the grand Mr. Darcy regardless of his personal desires. Recognizing the danger to his heart and hers if he stays, he gets out of Hertfordshire ASAP and scurries back to London in search of a better-qualified lady.
It's all for naught, of course. No one compares to Elizabeth. Then, circumstances bring him back to her. Within days of his return, he's proposing marriage.
Being the unchanged, haughty snob he is, Darcy doesn't realize how insulting he sounds. Elizabeth immediately spots the apparent danger of repeating her parents' marital mismatch.
Ms. Miller writes beautifully, alternating the narrative point of view between Darcy and Elizabeth and making their mutual attraction palpable. The story flows at a brisk pace without sacrificing character development. I particularly love Georgiana's personality here; it's always fun to read stories where she surprises her brother with sharp insights, as she does here.

This is the fourth book I’ve read from Meryton Press in their Skirmish & Scandal Series and I have enjoyed every single one of them. What a unique idea and everything was so well done. Congratulations, Meryton Press.

I adore love-at-first-sight stories. Unfortunately, in this case, it was one-sided. Our Darcy was hit right between the eyes with a two-by-four that was Elizabeth Bennet. She, realizing he was way out of her circle and circumstance, ignored and repressed the stirrings of affection within her. Yeah, our girl was forced to be prudent in reining in her affections and never gave it another thought. Not to be deterred, our Darcy delivered his equivalent of the DHP [Disastrous Hunsford Proposal] and was shot down for his efforts. Bless his heart; he never saw it coming.
We had the usual irritants: Wickham [the SBRB], Mr. Collins, Lady Catherine, and Caroline Bingley. Each and every villain brought out their claws and attempted to interfere where they had no business venturing. OMG! What fun to watch them crash and burn at every turn.
Because this was novella-length our story moved quickly but ended with a delightful epilogue. Yeah, that was cute. It also meant leaving out information as to what happened with other characters. Oh, well, I can imagine that a man in love would accomplish all he set in motion that night at the Netherfield Ball. I’ve always wanted to see a scene like that. I agree with Mr. Bennet, it was well played. I had to laugh.

I have just finished "A consuming love: a Pride and predjudice variation" by Kerry Miller by reading it on my tablet thanks to the Kindle Unlimited subscription of my girlfriend.
This is the third book by Miller that I have read based on Austen's famous novel, and I must warn you, they are addictive. While this one is shorter than the others, it maintains the same exquisite writing quality. In this short novella, we are once again immersed in the same characters and period as if it were written by the original author. It is truly impressive how the author achieves this level of authenticity. The story is filled with familiar twists, dramas, and well-defined, developed characters, all following a path to find love that mirrors the original book.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to those who have read the original novel and to those who have yet to discover Miller's variations. If you have already delved into any of these variations, there's no need for me to recommend it to you, as I'm sure you will eagerly jump right into it!
This is a blink and you'll miss it fast paced P&P what if that has Mr. Darcy meeting Miss Elizabeth Bennet the same day they tour Netherfield. He then flees her rustic uncouth based in trade family and hides out in London. But the Bingley's lure him back, accompanied by Georgiana, and he after one brief meeting decides to Propose to Lizzy which of course goes disastrously but they resolve to continue on as friends. Then Bob's your uncle a few days shows her that he's Mr. Right after all.
What if, in Pride and Prejudice, Darcy had met Elizabeth before the Meryton Assembly? What if they had met under better circumstances? Would things have gone differently? In Kelly Miller’s A Consuming Love, a reimagining of Jane Austen’s classic, this is exactly what happens.
I’m a fan of Pride and Prejudice, but I have never read a retelling before. This is a charming variation of the story, authentic in characterization while offering an alternate plot. The story follows Darcy and begins as he and Bingley visit Netherfield for the first time. It is here where he meets Elizabeth, who assists her father in telling them about the property. Darcy is instantly enthralled by Elizabeth and can’t stop thinking about her even after he returns to London. Pulled back to Hertfordshire, Darcy must confront his feelings for Elizabeth and hope they are reciprocated.
The story is told from Darcy’s point of view, and I enjoyed this switch in perspectives. It offers so much insight into his reserved and composed character and shows just how deep his feelings run. This story made me love him even more. He is a good man, honorable and sincere if a bit arrogant at times. Darcy is a dynamically developed character who grows and changes so much throughout the story, and knowing his thoughts and the meaning behind some of his words and actions offers a fresh perspective on his character.
I love Darcy’s relationship with his sister Georgiana and that it had a large role in the story. This was one of my favorite parts of the book. Georgiana is lovely, and she is such a support to Darcy even though she struggles with her own inner conflicts. They have a wonderful bond, as does the Bennett family, and I like that this is highlighted throughout the plot. The author captured the essence of the characters so well and really brought them to life.
Of course, my favorite part of the story was the romance. Similar to the original story, Darcy and Elizabeth both have strong feelings for each other. However, they face several challenges including miscommunication, meddlesome family members and friends, other interested parties, and more. I love how Elizabeth stands up for herself and her beliefs and how Darcy listens to and reflects on her assertions.
A Consuming Love is a charming and engaging story that I enjoyed reading. I think readers who like Pride and Prejudice or who like clean historical romances, will definitely appreciate it. Thanks so much to Kelly Miller for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Very charming. Although I am not a fan of ODC falling in love practically at first sight (eye roll) the gentle way Elizabeth turns Darcy down allows for a much quicker recovery. Georgiana is adorable and just right to help things along. leo a nice balance between all the secondary characters and no superfluous repetitions! Definitely worth a read.

Oh my gosh, I loved absolutely everything about this book! I've never read a Pride and Prejudice variation, but I have read the original by Jane Austen and I'm a huge fan of Regency Romances in general. A Consuming Love by Kelly Miller beats them all!
Kelly's prose is masterful, a true marvel to be enjoyed. I couldn't put this book down. It was so cool to read this from Darcy's POV and like I said, Kelly did a brilliant job. She truly is a remarkable writer and I HIGHLY recommend this book to any and all fans of Regency Romances. Move over, Bridgerton, A Consuming Love is here!!
After reading this I am eager to read more of Kelly Miller's variations!! 5 stars!!
Very Engaging Novella A book in the Skirmishes and Scoundrels Series of Pride and Prejudice variations, this novella by Kelly Miller is my favorite so far.
When the Netherfield steward isn’t available to tour it with Bingley and Darcy, Mr. Bennet and Elizabeth do it in his stead. Despite his trying to ignore her fine attributes, Darcy is captivated by her. Upon his hearing of her ties to trade, however, he quickly returns to London where he remains consumed with thoughts of her. Meanwhile, Caroline and Louisa fear the developing relationship between Bingley and Jane and urge him to return.
Kelly Miller has provided a charming and engaging love story that misses nothing in the telling despite it being a short story. Being mainly from Darcy’s perspective is a plus, as he makes himself determined to win Elizabeth’s love. Thoroughly enjoyable, I definitely recommend it.
June 28, 2021 - Audiobook This novella is just as enjoyable with the audiobook, featuring the narration of the very talented Harry Frost. Highly recommend.
I do love the author’s stories. This is a somewhat shorter than wished for but easy to read like all her books. Never anything jarring to take you out of the story.
Now for the epilogue which means thar be SPOILERS ahead.
For such a short epilogue it was very irritating. Lizzy and Darcy’s first daughter, Jane , is introduced to us. I was instantly smitten. Please write a sequel where we can hear about the adventures of Jane and her siblings and her intrepid stead, Ronny.
All the components for this story to be a good read were there but it did not come together. The premise that Darcy falls for Elizabeth within 2 hours of their first encounter is beyond absurd. Even Georgiana is captivated by her at their first meeting and wants her for a sister. I did like all of the characters in the book but the story was flat.
For its ‘novelette division’ it is everything light and pleasing. What it lacks in plot it makes up in premiss, great dialogue and Darcy’s charming narrative prose.
Synopsis: When Darcy and Bingley venture into Hertfordshire to inspect Netherfield, Mr Bennet & Lizzy are their tour guides in lieu of an errant steward. Mr Bennet and his daughters are a bit more involved with their tenants and neighbors.
Darcy first takes note of a lyrical laugh and is pleased to find the voice matches that of a young enchanting countenance. Throughout the tour of the grounds by means of conversation he ferrets out much of Lizzy's charming character and also her circumstances and relations in trade. Darcy, recognizing a strong inclination that he had never before experienced, errs on the side of caution and removes himself from the vicinity and thus does not stay with Bingley to nip it the bud. Meaning for most of P&P canon events Darcy is safely tucked away in London unable to slight Lizzy and she hardly knows Darcy when he returns gung-ho and ready to put a ring on it! It makes for a humorous first proposal!
That Which Pleased: ❀Darcy falling in love was well done and explained IMO ❀Lizzy & Darcy both charming;
“Did you mean what you told your aunt, that is, you consider me to be your equal?” She spoke in a breathless, tentative manner.
Nothing gets a lady quite as hot and bothered as equal rights! Take note, lads!
That Which Offended: ✗ If I had to nitpick I would say that I found Darcy's turn of manners after Lizzy's upbraiding bit of an overkill, the dancing and talking to such an extent a bit much to expect. Some people are naturally introverted and I always felt that P&P was about coming to understand Darcy and accept him as a whole, shortcomings included. I don't think he ever would become gregarious, fond of ballrooms or easy with the Bennets.
Verdict: I have never read this authors work before and I was left impressed. She has a strong handle on regency language and her style of prose I found to be Austenesque and delightful. I heartily recommend this light hearted yet engaging read.
Darcy and Elizabeth meet before the assembly as she and Mr Bennet are the ones to provide a tour of Netherfield and the related farm before Bingley leases it. Darcy's attraction to Elizabeth is something he has never experienced before.
After avoiding her at all costs, good advice from family members has him back in Meryton where Elizabeth continues to prove that he is everything he thought. They work together to handle Wickham, Collins, and her parents as he is able to prove his consuming love of her.
This Pride and Prejudice variation by Kelly Miller is part of a series of novellas by her and other authors from her publisher. I was excited to take another trip back to the regency era with my well spoken guide, Kelly Miller!
Kelly beguiles me with prose in a way that I cannot quite explain. The style of these books may very well be the pinnacle of well spoken language. Kelly draws us in with these two fated characters time and again and I never tire of the trip.
I think I favor Accusing Mister Darcy slightly, although... I did not have the same year jerk to the first kiss in that one as I did in this one. (Not a spoiler we know it’s gonna happen, right?)
Also I may be slightly charmed by the idea that a gentleman of “five and twenty” waits so long to experience kissing. Lol
Different times.
I look forward to the next Journey with Kelly, Fitzwilliam, and Miss Elizabeth!
If you love "Pride and Prejudice", you're sure to enjoy this masterfully written variation told from the POV of the one and only Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy. Getting a peek beneath his stiff composure is absolutely delightful. Highly recommend!
Kelly Miller never fails to deliver with her regency romance books. Consuming Love once again takes you to the heart of Regency England and a seat at the tea-table watching the play out of the deep feelings and misconceptions of Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett. If you are a fan of Jane Austen, you will love Kelly Miller
This was fun - being inside the mind of a besotted Darcy. And perhaps his affections are so readily apparent, this Mr. Darcy is even more attractive than usual. Now, honestly, that is quite something! Many of the secondary characters are present but in an adept method, the angst is short lived, though well handled. Looking for a romance to pass an afternoon? This is a very enjoyable offering.
I loved this novella! Kelly Miller embodies the psychology of Jane Austen’s characters in a way that’s true to form but also unique. I realize that dynamic sounds contradictory, but the author’s skill comes through because she simultaneously satisfies Jane Austen fans and draws in those who might not have read her classic works. In sum, her characters are appropriately complex and well drawn, not mere caricatures of Austen’s. The wit of the original works is also present, but manifested in a new way.
3.5 rounded up. This was a sweet story where our favorite couple find their HEA pretty easily and very quickly indeed! It’s really hard to accept Darcy would be so completely in love after one encounter and ready to propose by the second encounter, but it is definitely a romantic idea and their encounters are very sweet. I am a fan of Kelly Miller and look forward to more of her books. The writing was lovely and this was a fun and easy read!
This happy story varies widely from Miss Austen's original, but is a perfect storyline in its own right. All of your favorite characters are included, and they behave in the expected manner. The differences in the plot make the story a fresh, new look at the courtship between Elizabeth and Darcy as well as between Jane and Bingley.
After accompanying his friend to view a potential property, Darcy was introduced to the Elizabeth Bennet and became drawn to her instantly. He was hooked! He found himself changing his thoughts and his actions, totally infatuated by his new found lady. He was in for a huge suprise when it transpired that his best friend was intending to ask one of the Bennett daughters to marry him also.... But was it 'his' Elizabeth? I was intrigued by this short novella, wondering what variation this could have from the well known Pride and Prejudice novel. Alas I have never read the book or indeed seen the screen adaptation so I really have nothing to compare it to only a little knowledge gain from various discussions with friends and seeing clips on TV. The book is beautifully written and the language used by the author befits the period and gives it authenticity. The story is full of the highs and lows of aristocratic society and status, wealth, old fashioned values, romance and of course lurking in the shadows is the ever present villain. I love Elizabeth's strong character, she knows her own mind and doesn't let anyone impede her morals and values. This book keeps your attention throughout, with the right amount of suspense, will he or won't he, and builds the story with each chapter to keep you turning those pages. This book has opened up a whole new genre for me and I will be delighted to read more from this talented author. Would love to read how the other Bennett sisters fared during their lessons of etiquette!
What an absolutely charming book! I finished reading it a few days ago, but a dreamy smile still appears on my face whenever I think about it.
To be honest, I was a little cautious to read one of my favourite book’s variations. I had a rather disappointing experience with reading “Sense and Sensibility” modern adaptation a few years ago, and since then I haven't risked reading anything similar. But Kelly Miller’s books kept teasing me with promises to transport me back to the world of balls, ladies in rustling skirts, and gallant gentlemen riding graceful horses. And “A Consuming Love” has given me all that and more.
I tend to get confused with the modern hectic lifestyle. I’ve always felt that I can’t keep up with it, at least if I want to stay true to myself. That is one of the reasons why Jane Austen’s novels are my personal pill I regularly take to cope with stress. In her novels, the time ticks in unison with my heartbeat. There is time for thinking and for unhurried contemplations. Walks in the fresh air, horse rides, long family dinners as opposed to our permanent rush hour and missed deadlines.
I loved the new angles and twists the author gave to the original novel. Every time I reread “Pride and Prejudice”, I think “what if”, and Kelly Miller provided my imagination with what it had craved for.
After reading “A Consuming Love” I can’t wait to read all of Kelly Miller’s regency romance novels.
I loved reading the beautiful novella. The perfect Pride and Prejudice Variation I have read. I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed reading all the other novels written by the author. I love the author's books. This version was from Mr. Darcy's point of view. Love at first sight/meeting 🙂 Also enjoyed reading the brother-sister bond between Darcy and Georgiana. I also loved reading that part when Georgiana felt that Elizabeth Bennet's sister Mary actually felt left out and hence do not speak or socialise much and later on Mary and Georgiana discussed about their music interests. That was sweet. I loved it. Got more insights about Georgiana's nature from this version. And of course The Epilogue was so lovely when Jane asked Darcy how can she be certain her character is good and Darcy's reply "Follow your mama's example. She is the perfect person to show you the way". 💗 Strongly recommend it to all P & P fans and readers who enjoy reading Regency romance books.
The narrative focusing on Mr Darcy's point of view plays to this novellas advantage, giving us a great insight into his train of thoughts and growing attachments. As with Miller's other works, the characters are charmingly engaging, and well placed within the Austinesque narrative and setting.
This is a must read for anyone familiar with Miller's other works, and a great place to start for anyone new to the P&P variation genre.
Kelly Miller – A Consuming Love – Reviewed 2/18/21
What do you do when you fall head over heels in love, but she is not in your station????
Darcy has always been in control of his life but while he is helping his friend Bingly inspect a property that he is interested in, he meets a woman that throws his whole world into turmoil. As Bingly and Darcy walk towards the outbuilding that served as the steward’s office, Darcy hears the most musical sounds. A woman’s laugh, sweet and melodious, coming from the room. It captivated him as nothing has ever affected him before.
They knocked at the door and it was opened by a gray-haired man, rather well dressed for a steward, looking at them through his spectacles. He questioned their presence and Bingly announced that he had an appointment with the steward, Mr. Stone. The gentleman introduced himself explaining that he owned the adjacent property. He stated that Mr. Stone could not attend as he was about to be a father and had asked him if he could meet with you in his stead. They questioned the presence of the young lady and Mr. Bennett introduces them to his daughter, Miss Elizabeth Bennett, stating that she was extremely knowledgeable in the whole property, including the grounds and tenants. She has been helping the current steward in the management of the property since it had become vacant about a year earlier.
They spend a lot of time walking and inspecting the house and grounds, all the while, the feelings of disquiet built-in Darcy. All the while he realized that Miss Bennett was not within his station. He could not understand how this woman could affect him in this way.
And the story begins…
What did I like? Everyone knows that I am a P&P lover. I have several versions posted here on my site. Plus, I have reviewed three others that Kelly has written. I found myself fascinated with this one though. Mr. Darcy has always fallen in love with Elizabeth, but not in this way, it was exciting. And I am not going to spoil your read, but you are going to be surprised with Elizabeth also. All in all, this was one of the most enjoyable – different reads that I have encountered.
What will you like? Exciting, interesting, different, romantic, funny, and just an all-around enjoyable read. The unusual feelings that Darcy has found himself with will keep your nose glued to the pages, the romance will amuse you, and the ending will delight you. This is most certainly a different version of one of the most beloved stories that we have all come to love. I know that you will enjoy it as much as I did.
