Love it when a man who would come in dead last in a "Husband of the Year" competition—honestly, Bjorn wouldn’t even qualify to enter—ends up with the sweetest, kindhearted woman, who, compared to him, is an angel. I love it. Hoping for Bjorn’s redemption arc, because he very much needs it—it better be satisfying.
We got an emotionally unavailable prince who’s basically besties with his alcohol, and paired with a girl so spineless she could probably fold herself into a suitcase. Like seriously, she’s dumb, he’s dumber.... it’s a race to the bottom, and they’re both winning. And Chemistry? What chemistry? I’ve seen more sparks between two wet socks. It’s just awkward vibes and zero connection. Plus, the amount of cringe they try to pass off as normal? Nah it’s straight-up uncomfortable.
This Korean to English translation is another masterpiece by Solche, and the novel is beautifully written.
Known by the press as the Poisonous Mushroom, the problematic prince, Prince Bjorn has had his fair share of scandals. As the former crown prince, he was once married to the beloved Princess Gladys. But unfortunately, the perfect pair’s arranged marriage ended in an ugly and bitter divorce, in which Bjorn was forced to give up his crown.
Meanwhile, Erna Hardy, is facing the loss of her beloved country estate and ventures to the capital to beg her estranged father for financial help. However, Erna’s arrival into the big city forces her to cross paths with Prince Bjorn. Through several chance encounters, Bjorn eventually comes to court Erna. For one, she’s a perfect scapegoat to avoid the press on linking him back to his ex-wife, and second, he’s the ideal candidate to save Erna from having to marry a much older man, due to her father’s schemes.
In the end, this marriage of convenience blossoms throughout the pages of this novel and what began as a simple bet, eventually, transforms into a full on heart wrenching romance.
Highly recommend reading this novel. All of Solche’s works are amazing.
Solche (the author) loves the angst so this book have it.
Tropes - arrange marriage - miscarriage - royalty - he was divorced - she was rudely treated almost all the book because people prefer the ex wife (who was a cheater but no one knows except the ML) - slow burn
4★'s I NEED SEASON 4 😭 Honestly, just read it and ignore the negative reviews. With all the noise about the male lead being a red flag, I was actually surprised he wasn’t nearly as bad as people made him out to be. Did we really read the same manhwa? I’ve seen much worse male leads than Bjorn.
The male lead, Prince Bjorn, has clearly gone through trauma because of his past relationship, which explains many of his current actions. I do feel empathy and understanding for him. However, he doesn’t realize that his behavior is also hurting the people he loves, especially Erna. Our docile and naive female lead has been at the center of exploitation and malicious rumors, becoming the scapegoat used to cover up the scandalous secret of Prince Bjorn’s past.
At times, the Prince saves her and shows that he truly cares for her, but there are also moments when he pretends to be indifferent to her suffering and to what others say about her. Deep down, he does care—he’s just too prideful to admit it.
As the story progresses, there’s noticeable character development for Bjorn, but his pride remains the biggest obstacle keeping him and Erna from their happily ever after. He’s logical and intelligent, a man who lives by the book, so I understand why he acts the way he does. But for a man that smart, he’s surprisingly oblivious to the fact that he’s in love!
Honestly, he really needs to wake up, let go of his ego, and grovel!
Season 3 ended on such a cliffhanger—I can’t wait for Season 4, where the misunderstandings will finally be cleared up and Bjorn will (hopefully) start groveling and properly courting our dear Erna. Here’s hoping we get to see more moments of them actually enjoying their marriage.
P.S. I still believe the real enemies here are the ex and those who doubted Erna and spread all those malicious rumors about her.
The problematic prince portrays realistic and heart-wrenching responses in the face of love. The protagonist, Erna, is passion-driven and naive, while Björn, the male lead, only performs actions based on the profit. Due to Erna’s innocence, she is exploited by others and scapegoated as a villain. There are instances where Björn steps in to aid her, but he ultimately feigns ignorance to the malice she faces. Not to worry, his actions will lead to his own downfall.
This novel was a slow burn and is NOT for the weak-hearted. The lies and pure hatred Erna faces is truly tragic but made the story all the more compelling. To continue, the events of the story often deviated from my expectations bringing me to want more, and the characters are perfectly developed.
Overall, I felt satisfied with the ending, and I would recommend it to people are okay with slow burn stories.
This story leans fully into its title. The prince is, without question, problematic. The story thrives on tension, emotional manipulation, and morally ambiguous attraction, drawing the reader into a relationship dynamic that is intentionally uncomfortable. It’s engaging in the way dark romance often is, but it also demands a critical eye.
One of the novel’s strengths is Solche’s ability to create intense emotional pull. The prince is written to be charismatic, cruel, and deeply controlling, and the narrative is aware of how dangerous that combination can be. The push-and-pull between fascination and fear is effective, and it’s easy to see why readers might feel conflicted rather than simply entertained.
However, the book struggles with how it handles accountability. While the story clearly shows the prince’s harmful behavior, it often frames it as part of his allure rather than something that must be confronted or meaningfully challenged. Consequences feel limited, and emotional harm is frequently absorbed rather than addressed, which risks reinforcing the very dynamics the book seems to want to explore.
The female lead, while resilient in moments, is often positioned more as a reactor than an agent. Her endurance is emphasized far more than her autonomy. This can make the emotional arc feel stagnant, as suffering replaces growth and repetition takes the place of development.
Pacing is another mixed point. The emotional intensity is sustained, but it sometimes lingers too long in the same psychological space. Instead of deepening insight, some scenes reiterate dominance and submission without moving the characters forward in a meaningful way.
The book is effective at portraying obsession and imbalance, but less effective at interrogating them. Like much of Solche’s work, it’s powerful in atmosphere and emotion, yet limited by its reluctance to fully critique the harm it depicts.
okay, let me get things straight. i am not giving this book 3 stars because i like bjorn. he’s a red flag just like every other ml this author writes, but he is still less problematic compared to matthias. this man literally cannot express himself in words, and he doesn’t even realize he’s in love with erna. instead, he shows it through calculated actions meant to protect his wife. is he toxic? yes. most of the time he wasn’t there for her because he was too busy trying to protect her on his own and refusing to communicate. he couldn’t even write a decent love letter until later in the story.
so no, i’m not defending him, but at least his character gave erna genuine happiness from the start of their marriage. there was real emotion there, real depth. it wasn’t entirely fake. but i cannot defend him for letting society drag his wife’s name. he let them paint her as the villain when she was just an innocent, naive girl who wanted love, affection, and a family. that part was not okay.
but you know what? the 3-star rating is because of the chase and the groveling. erna, i am so proud of you for keeping your guard up and making this man work for it. the payoff was so satisfying. so yeah, compared to matthias, bjorn is still the better one.
I really enjoyed reading The Problematic Prince. The book has a solid plot, and I was genuinely hooked from the start.
That said, I really appreciated how Bjorn’s character developed. Seeing him become a better, more open husband to Erna was satisfying. His growth felt natural and gave the story some nice emotional depth.
All in all, it’s a good read. Not perfect, but definitely engaging enough to keep you turning the pages, especially if you enjoy romantic drama. Even though the ending is a bit predictable, it’s still worth the ride.
My favorite novel this month. It's not perfect, but it is better. Pretty rational for a rofan, and that's smth rarely happen. Tons of rofan has this simple setting where the ML is just plain bad, cruel and worse, or sometimes, they're the greenest flag ml without flaws. But in this novel, Bjorn is just like the title, Problematic. He has his flaw and he's working on it to get better. He's not so evil like, obsessive tyrant in most rofan, and I love it.
Que maestría para escribir de Solche. Sinceramente uff.
Me encantó. ❤️❤️
The title is accurate. He is problematic. He's not abusive or crazy, just without conscience and neglectful. She was a bit too naive, and everything she did gave me second-hand embarrassment. Gladys is a horrid woman. I'm not sure I enjoy how slow this is.

This book did angst really well! The characters were well-developed, and their slow progression felt natural and engaging. It’s definitely a sleazy romance, but the well-crafted characters made it enjoyable. My only complaint is the length—it felt a bit too long. Overall, a great read.
