Criminal. Spoiled. Entirely out of control.

Roman Avdonin has heard it all. None of it stops him from crossing the line one more time. Sent to Chicago to answer for his wrongs, he’s an outsider beneath the cruel gazes of men who are nothing like his own. He should have minded his business and paid his dues—a better man would.

But then he laid eyes on her.

Karine Yazov.

She’s forbidden—already promised.
Fragile in every way.

And he just can’t help himself.

What a tangled web this author has weaved in the first book of this trilogy. It completely boggled my mind and it has me deeply concerned. I figured that Roman’s story was going to be rough and raw but it was so much more. Roman was a hard character to warm up too. He was wild and reckless and not a great communicator with his parents. Enter Karine and her situation broke me. But when these two meet, which they were not suppose to, they can see each other, each broken in a different way. It was forbidden yet something within these two was like an invisible string pulling them closer and closer all the while the flame of danger and death circled them. My anxiety was at a all time high. All this leading to the Agreement Roman agreed too that will cause chaos and upheaval for him and I have to believe for his whole family and the Avdonin Bratva. I can only imagine the explosions that await in the next book.

There are TWO more installments. I need meds. Also, my heart is racing. *exhale* #help

When I say I went into this book completely blind, I mean it was pitch black dark, and I liked it! Every sentence was a surprise for me. I know some of you have been super fans for years and years, but I just got to the party, so I know relatively nothing. I know so little that I bought every paperback available to me back in January of this year so I could catch up. Well, I haven’t caught up yet, but I digress. THIS.STORY.

I’m just a girl, holding her kindle, reading a story, hoping it won’t break her.

There is very little that I can say about the story itself, but I can talk about the magic that is Bethany-Kris. This woman can bombshell a story like no other. She can layer a story so perfectly that you won’t see it coming. This particular story … ya’ll, I’m scared. I’m scared of what I know. I’m scared about what I don’t know. I’m scared about what I’ll find out. My concern began around 47% and it never let up a single bit. Then the instalment ended and *blank stare*

I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again for those in the back of the room … I don’t understand this word wizardry this woman has. No matter the tale, she spins it so well you are left speechless. I am seriously obsessed with Bethany-Kris’s style and voice. I always feel so alive when I read one of her books and I have not read enough of them!

Go do the thing RIGHT NOW and get started on this epic ride!

This author's latest books have been a bit off the boil for me and given I have read and loved most of them that's saying something. However, she's definitely back with this trilogy despite me not liking Roman very much in the beginning. If ever there was huge character growth, it's Roman. That man amazed me.

I loved being back in BK's crime world of mob/mafia.

I'm not really too sure about this book.
The Hero and heroine are not particularly likeable, the Hero especially.
He has an entitled attitude and I'd pretty selfish, which I think the series of books will hopefully show him developing to a more tolerable person, maybe.
There are scenes of the Hero with other women before he meets the heroine.
He has a negative attitude toward love and is critical of his father's devotion to his mother and his faithfulness.
He is known as a man-whore type.
After he meets the heroine, he says he has no desire for anyone else.

Possible triggers.
Drug use.
Slave trade mentioned, under age girls, hints at abuse.
Trilogy so the story ends without a HEA.
Not really a huge cliffhanger but obviously unfinished.
The heroine has have issues which have been hinted at but not fully explained as yet.
Possible personality disorder or a way of becoming someone else to avoid facing abuse she is undergoing.
It's all a bit vague and not fully understood yet.
She is promised to another man who is not a good man.

I did feel it was really, really slow, sometimes with a trilogy it feels it needs to be 3 books sadly I was wishing it was a duet.
The book is connected to The Russian Guns series.
The Hero is the grandson of Anton, the Hero from that series.
The other members of the family make brief appearances.
Teaser chapter for next book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This book blew me away. I was already excited going into it because I was going to be reacquainted with my favorite Russians, but this story took me on a wild ride that I did not want to end. Roman was out of control and ended up getting himself sent to Chicago, where he should have just laid low, did what he had to do, and gone back to NY. But Roman was never the type to do as he was told. Especially not when he meets a girl like Karine.
Karine was an absolute mystery. You know that she's one hundred percent off limits, but also that something is...off, wrong with her situation. But I never, EVER saw the twist that got thrown into this story coming. I thought I had it figured out, but the truth left my mouth hanging open in shock.
Neither of them is supposed to, or allowed to, have an interest in the other, which of course means when they do notice each other, all hell breaks loose.
This book was interesting from start to finish and I cannot wait for the next part of the story.

5 "Little Odessa’s Devil" Stars

It is no secret that I am a fan when it comes to Bethany Kris’s writing. With every book, chapter and word I can’t help but fall more in love with her writing style. When it was announced a brand new trilogy featuring Roman Avdonin a rich, spoiled coke addict who thrives on drugs, money, booze and sex I was hooked. He craves the darkness and is chaos in the cruelest form. But he is also trying to pave his own legacy instead of following in his families footsteps. Roman is angry, hiding behind a blank face but suffocating with finding some importance in life. Leaving havoc in his wake Roman is banished while his followers are left behind. Forced to walk the thin line of preservation, and stuck between right and wrong he encounters a young woman that brings him to his knees. Karine. A wilted rose that awakens a heavenly fire in him that he can barely contain.

The world is so vast and endless yet Karine has never felt so alone. She carries so much weight on her shoulders, drowning in her own misery wishing to be heard. When Karine meets Roman for the first time she feels this intense connection yet also a sense of belonging.

Yet while these two become more than just acquaintances many of Avdonin’s enemies await for the Little Odessa’s Devil to come home and strike. Many want to end the Avdonin legacy and will stop at nothing to kill the only son of the Pakhan. . . The streets are in an uproar and you can sense a war is brewing.

I fell hard for this slow burn psychological thriller. Fueled with dark passion Roman & Karine are a force to be reckoned with. The Agreement will keep you on your toes with all the lies, secrets and deceit. It left it’s mark on my heart as I’m silently awaiting on what is to come for the Ruthless Prince and his Wilted Rose.

We loved this brand-new series, and we will admit for the first time ever we were contemplating if we were going to love these characters but, as always, Bk won us over with her amazing writing skills.

Roman at first meeting him we were like what a loser just another spoiled prince but, he proved us wrong and turned out to be something of a knight dressed in all black who lives in a dark and dangerous world and one who is more than capable of protecting Karine from those monsters who want to harm her.

We loved the story that left us with so many unanswered questions. We loved that Karine was a complicated character, as we have never encountered a character like her before, and that was really a refreshing turn of events. Our heart went out to that girl for all that she endured and continues to endure due to do to those monsters who control her life day in and out, that poor tortured soul.

Roman too was running from his own demons, so these two tortured souls might just turn out to be their savior for one another. Book one off to a great start. The story was the perfect mix of good versus evil, filled with a ton of drama and a cast of awesome characters.

The Agreement, book 1 in The Darkest Lies Trilogy, had my mind reeling. I didn’t know what to expect and i was definitely surprised. The author delivered more thank just a Bratva story. It was complex and couldn’t have been more different than Roman’s grandfather or even father’s story. This rollercoaster ride is far from over and is gonna be wild and reckless. I look forward to more of this pairs story to unfold. Bring on book 2.

Ok Bethany I've finished and you expect to wait for another two installments nooooooo. This is a book where you will think you are getting just another mafia story but this is a deeply complex storyline and one that is best to go into blind. Roman is one of those guys who really are their own worst enemy. I alternated between wanting to knock him out or hug him. Sent away for his own good he should just do his time then go home a different man but no he has to make waves. I won't lie he is like marmite and it took me awhile to warm up to him and I'm still not convinced but hopefully book two will pull me more towards him. Karine is a total enigma the mysterious young woman who intrigues him but she is the one who is off limits. Forbidden fruit never seemed so sweet for Roman. I love the way Bethany pulled me into the story laying the foundations of what could either be an epic love or just an epic betrayal. That twist yeah I never saw that coming. Book two is required urgently.

I always love Bethany kris stories. However,From my point of view, the first generation of mafiozio’s were the best. For the italians at least.

I won’t say the same thing for the russians. I loved Roman as much as i loved his father and his grand father.

The storyline was perfect and so interesting. The MCs were perfect and were perfect for each other.

I will definitely recommend this book!

This author has a way of creating a story that starts out small but ends in a huge way. The story, itself, is riveting but when complex characters, and an intricate mystery get involved then it takes the story into another dimension.

So many twists that I didn't see coming. It ends at a pretty pivotal time after learning a big secret. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Why should you read this book?🤔
👇🏻
It has those “agreeable” 4💫💫💫💫

👍🏻Author Bethany Kris has done an amazing job with the background of the story, the plot and storyline🤩 The book has yumm-licious characters! Swooooooonnnnn...😍😋
👍🏻 An amazing plot, seamlessly blended characters, it has a very unique and interesting storyline that keeps you hooked!❤
👍🏻 Roman doesn't give a damn...not about rules, or boundaries. But what happens when he finds another lost soul? Karine is lost in a world of her own! She wants to be wanted! Will she find him? The story is a suspense romance which ends up on a cliffhanger- one I can't wait fo read! 🥀
👍🏻 I am completely,  honestly and irrevocably in love with Roman and Karine 🖤 I was completely in awe when I reached the climax of the book! The story will take you through a roller coaster of a ride and still leave you on a high❣

👍🏻My recommendation: If you are looking for a mafia trope, this is your book!🥰

👉🏻Disclaimer: Has some triggers about as the story has a criminal background.
👉🏻 Do swipe the cover for a look into the teasers and highlights from the book, though they don't reveal much for this book because I didn't want to take away the essence! But I have included some scenes that I found irresistible!

I didn’t add a rating nor a few words after I finished because I couldn’t come up with either. I read the warning at the front but I don’t usually have a trouble with challenging subject matter so I read on.

So much for bravado, it did make me squirm but not enough to make me regret reading.

I loved the chemistry between Roman and his family. The romance between Roman and Karine was inevitable but how it is going to pan out will be interesting. It’s not going to be easy to say the least. The ending definitely left me wanting more but fortunately BK never keeps you waiting long for the next book.

My 4 stars is because I didn’t want to stop reading. What struck me as strange though was I don’t have any highlights/comments beyond 60%. I think because at that point I was so into the story that I just didn't feel the need to comment or highlight. And the final chapter is too spoilerish to comment on!

I‘m aware authors evolve and all that but I’m missing the good ol‘ books by Bethany Kris. I can’t connect with her newer characters and plots, they have just become so dysfunctional and what’s worst, I don’t like the MCs anymore. I forced myself through this book, hoping it would somehow get better and grip me like some older titles but nope that wasn’t the case… so I won’t continue on to book 2 and 3 on the trilogy.

Very unconventional take from Kris. This is going to be emotional kinda book or series.

I think Karine is going to give Roman the kind of life to live. At the start of this book it seemed Roman needed some direction.

Honestly excited to see where this is going.

The first line in the synopsis says it all, my fellow mafia romance book loving friends. You have been warned. Roman, the hero, was a privileged, self-entitled, way over indulged by his family, coke snorting, mafia prince, young adult criminal who was spoiled and entirely out of control. So much so, I almost made the mistake of giving up on him before he had a chance to starting wising up and begin the journey of becoming the mafia made man he needed to be.

Honestly, I have to admit the early on, disgusting back alley behavior of his with a skank OW ranked him a total loser and zero on my hero scale. He truly only had one way to go from there, folks, and that was up. That's what happens when you start at rock bottom. Heck, I wanted to take him to the proverbial mob wood shed myself for his disrespectful words and thoughts towards his top mob papa and other associates. I had to dig deep and put some trust and hope this author would whip him into shape. Fortunately, she didn't let me down.

The leading lady turns out had secrets and several sides of her own that I still haven't completely wrapped my mind around. I honestly think it is going to take the next book for me to begin to get a better grasp on the huge, unexpected, foreign to me element that was thrown in as an OTT plot twist.

What I do know is Roman is really stepping up to the plate by the end, after sort of being pushed in the right direction. Between you and me, I think he would have took action regardless. He's now being guided by an unexpected attraction, new found sense of rightness, and maybe, just maybe, finally learning the life lesson the world doesn't just revolve around himself. Yeah, this lady love is about to pull him in and likely under a high tide of deadly drama that is going to be extremely difficult emotionally and physically for both of them to overcome.

Romance Safety Gang:

Rating: Lowered 1 star for the crass, crude skank OW smex scene near the beginning.

Title: The Agreement, Series: The Darkest Lies Trilogy (Book 1), Author: Bethany-Kris, Pages: 244, not a stand-alone, must read books in order, mafia born MC, damsel in distress heroine, spoiled brat to hero, OW smex scene before meeting heroine, arch rival enemy, HUGE twist revealed near the end, drug use, hinted at but not fully revealed yet horrific past abuse ... to be continued.

"What good is giving someone the world if you haven't ruined it first to get to them?"

As always, another great read from BK. The Agreement follows Roman Avdonin, "Demyan Avdonin's pup." , a bratva prince used to getting himself in and out of trouble, and Karine who comes from a world shrouded in secrets and stories that have yet to reveal themselves.

Roman is cocky and brash with seemingly no cares for the chain of command within their world or his own well-being, "I don't think I ever taught him how to tell himself no." , and yet... underneath all the bravado, lies a well of emotion and a need to be better for those he cares about. "Numb because he was who he was, and he liked that person, but also just distant enough from the people who loved him that he hoped it hurt them less to see him this way."

Seeing his relationship with his parents and grandfather broke my heart. It's so obvious that they love each other but due to their world, they can't always directly express or show that in the way the other needs to see it. "He's missed you for a long time-longer than you realise. But how is he supposed to tell you that when you can't even stand to hear me say it to you?" (Ummm... okay, cue the tears!!).

Karine also appears to be a kindred spirit, in that she's constantly finding ways to take away the pain of being rejected by those who should care for her. "Maybe she could try-just one time." Her story slowly begins to reveal itself throughout but damn, I wasn't expecting the revelation that comes towards the end of the book! I had some suspicions about a certain character being somewhat related to her, but wasn't expecting one of the others! Definitely interested in seeing the explanation behind it all though.

These two are definitely a pair of star-crossed lovers who shouldn't be anywhere near each other, especially given she's already promised to someone else. But they're a pair who can't seem to resist the pull of one another. Seeing Roman care for her though was so sweet! Even Masha, who I must admit, I'm a bit sceptical about, doesn't seem to put her well-being first as much as she appears to Karine that she is. "She meant something to Roman-she wasn't worthless to him. He'd make sure she knew it, too."

Really enjoyed reading this... I thought I knew how this was going to play out before I went into it, but I was definitely proven wrong with some of the plot twists in here! BK's word-building and the emphasis she puts on parts of the story always manages to suck me right in and I feel like I can picture her world so clearly. This book ends on a cliff-hanger and I'm looking forward to finding out where it leads as I definitely need some answers! Can't wait to see more of Roman and Karine and the chaos they've left behind.

Bethany Kris is no stranger to mafia romance, and if you look at her backlist she’s written a ton. Still, she manages to surprise you with some plot twists in this one, and it will have you guessing at the many characters and their motives and the multiple perspectives that are to come.

This latest installment is the third gen continuation of her Russian Guns series, my most favorite of hers. It was nice to revisit Anton and Demyan, but exciting to get to know Roman. Roman is as charming as his grandfather, as introspective (and kinda angry and moody) as his father, but he's all swagger and conceit and gives no f*cks like only an Avdonin man can be. He paves his legacy with his chop shop, but he also struggles with finding his footing within his infamous family. Though he doesn't voice his feelings to his family, you can tell Roman's angry and feeling ineffective in some way, so perhaps a change of scenery will push him to see the importance of his life.

Karine's as fragile as BK says, but she’s also beautiful in her loneliness and earnest in her desire to be acknowledged for her existence. Though her life's shrouded in secrecy, it’s ironic how open and honest she is about her feelings TO ROMAN. I guess her soul just recognizes his safety. Both Roman and Karine suffer from some kind of ennui: listless, lifeless, and purposeless until they find each other. From Chicago to New York, their forbidden love story spans cities and many enemies, addictions and secrets, desires and the danger waiting for them. The ending brings them back to NYC, because when Little Odessa’s Devil is away...Brighton Beach will still wait for its King.

Deceptively clever in its plot twist, nostalgically romantic in its connection of “old souls,” and evocative in its portrayal of fear, pain, and insecurity, this book was such a mesmerizing introduction to Roman and Karine. The character driven plots let you delve into their emotions, but the violence hints at the mafia elements that will fracture organizations and bring about many consequences that will either separate Roman and Karine or bring them even closer together.

The Agreement is the first book in the Darkest Lies Trilogy. Roman Avdonin lives up to his nickname Little Odessa’s Devil. Cocky of course. A boundary pusher. Often bored with the status quo. Impulsivity and rage are Roman’s primary emotions, although not the only ones, but what Roman allows others to see. A devil’s game of smoke and mirrors…

Born into the Bratva life, the only son of the Pakhan, Roman broke from his spoon-fed privilege building his own successful business, but not without lighting fires along the way. Roman wants it, he takes it or snorts it up his nose.

Fires even after they are put out, leave a path of destruction. Roman is forced to make sacrifices to restore the peace. Odessa’s Little Devil is banished without his following to protect him. Roman plays within the lines, ignoring the hellfire around him, until she appeared like divine intervention.

Karine is every boundary, every rule, Roman never knew he wanted to break. She’s like a butterfly—fragile with dark lines floating through emptiness. Roman finds Karine mesmerizing. Misleading. Her spirit is out of the ordinary. She possessed his mind like no one ever had before. Especially no woman.

Karine wants nothing more than to be seen by Roman. She’s not his.  She doesn’t really exist. Nothing stops Roman Avdonin from getting what he wants. But does he know what he’s getting into? Karine is fire. Roman thrives on the flames.

>>

All you psychological thriller lovers, like myself, will fall deep into this one. It’s a slow burn, unpredictable romance with a dark passion that defies the ordinary.  Complex characters is an understatement. Karine is vulnerable with a haunting edge. Not one to be underestimated.

Roman has a lot of growing up to do. Don’t write him off too soon. I have a feeling he will learn the hard way. And what better way to soften Roman’s rage and redefine his purpose than to piece together Karine and fall in love with her dark vulnerability?

Danger, suspense and heart throbbing romance! Nobody does mafia romance like BK! Intense, dark and full of danger as Roman is forced by a deceit to a place that takes him away from all he knows. He’s the spoiled Bravta prince from NY that’s out of place in Chicago. I didn’t like him very much at the beginning but a change of scenery makes the man. He morphed into a hot hunk with the smarts to toe the line just enough to get what he wants and stay out of trouble. Well, maybe. I was biting my nails waiting for his smart mouth or backhanded ways to get him in trouble. Trouble he found in the daughter of the Chicago boss. Karine is mesmerizing right from the start. She’s mysterious with a beauty Roman can’t resist. I love that BK gave us a heroine that’s not the norm. My heart ached for Karine with horrible father and his iron grip on her life. There’s such a tease about her history and secrets surrounding her that I just know the reveal is going to be heartbreaking. We get a few answers a the end with Roman and Karine in a new situation. This is one of the best from this exceptional author with a heart throbbing couple with loads of sizzle and a storyline full of mystery, danger and intrigue. I can’t wait for the next installment in this series. Absolutely stunning! I voluntarily reviewed ARC.

I never would have started reading this trilogy if I had known what it was about going into it. I know it's a real disorder but it always feels like a cheesy plot device in a romance. I strongly suspected what was going on early on in the story because I've read a few romance books with this same mental illness.

Aside from that there were other issues. First of all Roman isn't likeable. He's a junkie who thinks he can do whatever he wants because of who he is. It wasn't surprising he ended up in the situation he did. It was good when he went to Chicago that he was in a situation where he wasn't beloved by everyone, but nonetheless he still did what he wanted.

The romance between Roman and Karine was simply a case of love at first sight. They knew absolutely nothing about each other and wanted each other desperately. It didn't mesh with the type of guy Roman was to fall so quickly. With Karine, it made sense since she was ignored most of her life. The fact that Roman wouldn't stay away from her was a testament to what an idiot he is. He literally put his life on the line for her. The Russian Guns Series were the first Bethany Kris books I read by her. And to this day they are still my favorites. When she announced the trilogy that will follow Roman Avdonin story to say I was excited was one big understatement ...

The Agreement is the first book in the series The Darkest Lies. We meet an unrestrained Roman, who, following his own paths, quite often acts in terms of impulse, disregarding the awaiting consequences. Thus getting in a lot of trouble. Being out of control and in consequence of his reckless actions he is sent to Chicago, where has to fulfill his assigned task, stay low and away from trouble, so finally he would be back to New York. Maybe Roman would have succeeded if Karine Yazov, Parkhan Chicago's daughter had not stood in his way...

The Agreement pulled me in from the first pages, kept me in suspense, and I honestly did not anticipate such plot development that has been given to the reader. Let's be honest, the ending is not what you would expect (even if you think you know what's going on), and I am looking forward to the next part of the story, as I was left with many unanswered questions.

What can I say? BK never ceases to amaze me. This is quite the start to The Darkest Lies. The plot development is something else. One that I never would have anticipated. Mind boggling!

Roman has been a naughty boy and as punishment, he is sent away. All he has to do is keep his head down and do what he is supposed to do and everything will return to normal. Right? Only he doesn't know how to adhere to rules. When he meets Karine, all good intentions go out the window. Only this time, he has bitten off more than he can chew or has he?

This starts off with what looks to be what one would expect from the Bratva, but as the story develops it becomes more and more intriguing. What transpires at the end is what I least expected. Gobsmacked would be one way of describing it. It pulled me in right from the start and I can't wait to see how it further develops. Great start to this trilogy.

I received an ARC and the views expressed are my personal opinion.
