𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 is a gripping coming-of-age tale that takes readers on a journey through the streets of 1980s Brooklyn, where life is as challenging as it is vibrant. At the heart of the story is Empress, a young girl with big dreams and an unshakable determination to achieve love, happiness, and a life of comfort. Her street smarts and beauty make her stand out, but it’s her resilience and the unwavering bond with her best friends that truly drive her story forward.

I would classify 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 as a YA novel, as it captures the voice and perspective of a young Empress as she navigates life’s challenges. One of the standout elements is how seamlessly François weaves Haitian culture and identity into the narrative, offering an authentic glimpse into the challenges of being a young Haitian girl growing up in America. These cultural details added depth to the story and provided a meaningful context for understanding her journey.

The author’s simplistic approach to storytelling gave the book a teenage girl diary-like quality. This made for extremely easy reading.

The ending was completely unexpected. I did not see that coming at all! And to be honest, I’m not quite sure how I feel about it🤔.

My heartfelt thanks to the author Francois for gifting me copy of her book.
