She's never believed in ghosts... until now. As the owner of Sedona Bed and Breakfast, Bernadette Maxwell has always played up the rumors that her business was haunted. She’s never believed it herself, even though she can’t explain the odd odors that sometimes permeate the room or why a blast of cold air comes out of nowhere… until she has an accident and can suddenly see her resident ghost—her crazy, fun-loving, hippie grandmother, Ruby.
When a guest is found dead, the police rule it a homicide. It becomes apparent Bernadette is not only a suspect, but also in the crosshairs of the murderer. With no one to turn to for help, she relies on Ruby to assist her in a search for clues to bring the killer to justice.
Will Bernadette and Ruby find the murderer before Bernadette becomes the next victim?
USA Today bestselling author Carly Winter writes fun, small town cozy mysteries, always with a dash of humor and quirky characters. When not writing, you can find her spending time with her family, on a Pilates reformer or enjoying the fantastic Arizona weather (except summer - she doesn't like summer). She does like dogs, wine and chocolate and wishes Christmas happened twice a year.
Bernadette Maxwell owns the Sedona Bed and Breakfast in a large home she inherited when her Grandma Ruth passed away. There have been rumors of the house being haunted and there are some things that could point to a ghostly presence but Bernie doesn’t believe in ghosts.
Bernie took a few days off to attend a wedding that was filled with strange occurrences, one that has changed Bernie’s life. She now knows the house truly is haunted because she can now see and hear the house’s resident ghost. Her fun-loving Grandma Ruth is trapped in this plane, unable to move on. She has been trying to communicate with Bernie and doing a little haunted hijinks for the guests of the B&B since the day she died.
There was only one guest when Bernie got home checked in by her best friend Darla who was managing the place.in Bernie’s absence, but by morning that guest is a goner. Found dead in his room, the police rule it a homicide. Bernie is their prime suspect but she hadn’t even met the man. With her grandmother’s help, Bernie decides to do a little amateur sleuthing. But she is already getting warnings to leave everything alone or she will be the next ghost haunting her B&B.
This was such a fun read!
Bernadette could not be more different than her Grandma Ruth. Bernie is low-key, a little OCD, and a straight-laced by-the-book person. Ruth has loved life and all it had to offer right up to her death. She’s cool and crazy, and a total hoot and a half. Good thing only Bernie can hear her because you never know what is going to come out of her mouth. I fell for both characters pretty quickly. Bernie starts to loosen up to have some fun with her grandmother but she also has murder on her mind which has her questioning just who she can trust. Darla really irritated me with her attitude but Deputy Adam Gallagher turned out to be an excellent friend and that relationship looks to be headed to more than just friendship. These characters developed nicely over the course of the story and I am interested to see where life takes them next.
The murder mystery was much more complicated than I first imagined. Some crazy ideas were thrown out as possibilities for the guest’s death but as the story continued a couple were not as far-fetched as I thought. There were some comical scenes including one wild ATV ride as Ruth and Bernie sought to get answers. I enjoyed the way Ruth and Bernie found a way to work together and the way the killer was revealed. Ruth’s snarky little comments that Bernie repeated for the killer’s benefit gave me a good giggle.
The Guest is a Goner is a strong lighthearted paranormal mystery filled with humor. I found this granddaughter and ghostly grandmother sleuthing team completely engaging. I am looking forward to reading more of this series to see what they get into next.
The reader will find themselves laughing and turning pages to follow along with the adventures of Bernie and Ruby as they try to search out a killer - and not get themselves killed in the process.
I Need to Know The Answer To The Cliffhanger at the End!
I have to say right up front that the cliffhanger I am talking about is outside the central mystery of the book. Don't worry you'll know why the guest is a goner and who did it! The Cliffhanger is the answer to something I was curious about as a reader and for that reason, I'll be sure to pick up the next book in the series.
This book is the first book in the Sedona Spirits series and is a spin-off of the author's "Tri-town Murders" series, but you don't have to be familiar with that series to start this book. I was drawn to read this book because I thought the title was a hoot and I enjoy paranormal cozies. Bernie and Ruby are a likable duo, grandma Ruby is a free spirit and Bernie is very straight-laced. Their lives have both been affected by Ruby's hardnosed parents and it's interesting to see how Bernie's great-grandparents have had a hand in Ruby's, Bernie's Mom's, and Bernie's personalities and decisions. In the book, Bernie does some important self-reflection and that's a real plus, it's so good to see characters focusing on their mental health.
One of the main components of a cozy mystery is the town and the townsfolk. In this book, it turns out that Bernie is surrounded by terrible townsfolk. At the end of the book Bernie really only has her grandma and a potential love interest and that was rather sad. I hope in the next book Bernie makes new friends with people who aren't murder suspects.
When the killer is revealed it is done Scooby-Doo style, which I *loved* So fun! I also learned that in the Sedona area there are wild boars and they are called javelinas. Lastly, I highlighted one line from the book to share: "The bowling alley smelled like oil and feet."--What a great line!
Overall this is a short cozy, has a quirky duo to root for, and paranormal elements and I will read the next book to see where we go!

Bernadette Maxwell is the owner of the “haunted” Sedona Bed and Breakfast. She doesn’t believe it’s spirit infested, but she can’t explain the odd odors or cold blasts of air. But then she literally gets struck by lightning and starts seeing her crazy hippie grandmother, Ruby. She’s afraid she’s losing her grip, but she really missed Ruby and decides to make the best of it. One of the guests at her establishment is found murdered and of course she’s a suspect. And maybe a possible victim, since the killer really doesn’t like her sniffing around to find out who killed her guest.
This was a light, fun, easy read, perfect for the beach or gym. The Sedona, AZ, setting is appealing. Bernadette is warm and engaging, and while her grandmother can be annoying, they had some funny scenes together. I could just imagine them ripping around the hills of Sedona on a four-wheeler. The supporting characters are well drawn, the mystery had plenty of twists and turns, and the ending was a nice set up for book 2. I will read more in this series.
Super cute, very easy read. If you’re looking for something not to take too seriously - it’s not a literary masterpiece but a fast read whodunit with a whimsical grandma spirit guiding her granddaughter to take life less seriously, enjoy herself, and solve a murder!
The Guest is a Goner follows Bernadette, a millennial bed-and-breakfast owner who, after being struck by lightning off-screen right before the novel begins, gains the involuntary ability to communicate with her deceased grandmother, Ruby. While framed as a lighthearted murder mystery, the narrative increasingly functions as a vessel for intergenerational moral transmission. Ruby’s ghost does not guide Bernie through grief or spiritual reckoning; rather, she critiques Bernie’s fashion choices, dismisses her anxiety and mocks her trauma responses.
Ruby operates not as a traditional ghostly mentor, but as a vehicle for boomer-era ideology seeking posthumous relevance. The novel repeatedly positions Ruby as “correct,” and Bernie as emotionally fragile, misguided, or in need of redirection. Ruby’s commentary—on everything from mascara to Mexican drug cartels—blurs the line between haunting and unsolicited life coaching. Her presence enforces a worldview in which self-medication with wine is preferable to therapy, personal boundaries are inconvenient, and forgiveness is optional.
What begins as intergenerational haunting gradually morphs into ideological possession, as Bernie’s autonomy is quietly eroded in favor of inherited values. By the novel’s midpoint, Bernie no longer resists Ruby’s influence but instead internalizes and defends it. In doing so, The Guest is a Goner offers an unintentional commentary on generational power dynamics, rendering the cozy mystery not simply a genre of comfort and resolution, but one of cultural restoration, where the past literally refuses to stay dead.
This is the first book in the Sedona Spirit series. Bernadette “Bernie” Maxwell inherited a house from her grandmother Ruth which she turned into a bed and breakfast. She marketed the place as haunted but didn’t believe in ghosts... until she had a freak accident and soon after can see party-lovin' grandmother Ruth. A guest died in her house and she became the prime suspect. She also started getting threats from the real killer. It’s up to her and Ruth to clear her name.
Bernie’s granny is a hoot! Quite the opposite of Bernie which makes for a really fun read. The story made me laugh at parts. It’s a clean story, no gore or profanity. I look forward to reading the next.

I kept reading until I was finished, even though I had to be up early for work. I could not turn the pages fast enough. This murder mystery was very entertaining and had quite a few laughs. I sure wish I could find more books like this, I would be one happy reader. Being struck by lightning has left Bernadette wondering if she has gone crazy, as she is now seeing and hearing Ruby, her dead grandma. When a murder happens at her Bed and Breakfast, Ruby joins bernadette in her investigating to clear her name. If you like humor in your books, grab a copy, some chocolate and kick back while being entertained for a couple hours.

"Yes, this B&B is haunted" is very much a tongue in cheek response that Bernie gives when asked because she knows how many people come to "haunted" inns in the hope of seeing a ghost. If anything, it was more for a laugh but when her dead grandmother appears and Bernie can not only see her and hear her, she can actually see through her, it was not funny anymore. And neither is the dead guy lying on the bed in the room upstairs!
A fantastic start to a new spin off series. I really like Bernie, with her OCD tendencies, her logical mind, her total conviction that ghosts do not exist (until grandma of course!), her inability to lie convincingly... she is as much of a hoot as her grandma Ruby. Great duo, they compliment each other perfectly. Great read, more please!
This was fun! Best part was that I didn't figure out who the murderer was until Bernie said his name and was right. I also love how Bernie can talk to her dead grandmother, Ruby, and that her cat, Elvira, seems to like Ruby more even if she's a ghost! I am looking forward to more books in this series. I do hope Bernie and Darla make up their friendship.
The Guest is a Goner by Carly Winter is the first installment in the "Sedona Spirit" cozy paranormal series. The main character is Bernadette "Bernie" Maxwell.
Bernie likes to play up on the haunted angle when it comes to her Bed and Breakfast, but she's never seen a ghost...until an accident suddenly enables her to see her resident ghost--her free-spirited grandmother, Ruby. Bernie is still coming to terms with having Ruby around when a guest is found murdered in her B&B. Now, not only is Bernie a suspect, but the actual killer has been threatening her. With Ruby's help, Bernie strives to solve the case on her own before she's the next one haunting the B&B.
This story left a lot to be desired. I loved the premise of it, but the narrative fell short of my happy expectations. Bernie is a likable character, and Ruby is hilarious, but the plotting lacked cohesion. What really perplexed me was (Spoiler!!) when Bernie first began receiving threats of the 'tell the police and I'll kill you' variety, she knuckled under and didn't tell the police. Even as she, herself, remained their primary suspect! Tell the police, you dumb bunny! Sheesh.
I'm on the fence between a score of 2 or 3. Trope test time!
Trope Test: 1. Does the mc work at/as one of the following: baker/bakery/sweet shop/tea shop/coffee shop, library/librarian, antique/vintage shop, bookstore, fashion/boutique, bed & breakfast? Yes, she runs a bed and breakfast. 2. Does the mc live at her (or his) place of occupation? Yes, she does. 3. Is the love interest involved in law enforcement? (Police officer, sheriff, detective, PI, FBI) Yes, she's sweet on police officer Adam. 4. Does the mc have a dog/cat as a pet? Yes, she has a cat. 5. Is the mc's BFF either a gay guy or a ditzy/zany woman? Well, Bernie's BFF, Darla, is now pissed at her for telling the police that she (Darla) checked the murdered guest in. 6. Did the mc find the body? Yes, she did. 7. Did the mc wind up in mortal danger at the end of the book? Yes, of course! 8. Is the mc's mother either: dead, absent, far removed, ditzy and dithering, or overbearing/disapproving/meddling? Yes, her mother is absent. 9. If mother is dead/absent, does the mc have another mother-figure (grandmother, aunt, mom's friend, or an older friend)? Yes, her ghostly grandmother. 10. Is the mc child-free? (Either no children or else grown children--i.e. no small children to look after) Yes, she is child-free
Wow, other than the BFF dilemma, it was a solid 9 yes answers out of 10. For that reason, I'm knocking the score down to a two.

This is a fun read, Bernie comes home from her cousins wedding where she had been hit by lightening. Returning to her Bed & Breakfast in Sedona which is the house she inherited from her Gran four years prior. She has advertised the B&B as haunted as a marketing gimmick but to her surprise, it is haunted! By her Gran!! For four years Ruby has been roaming the house trying to get attention from anyone, Imagine both their surprises when Bernie can see her/ Not sure if she is hallucinating or suffering head trauma from the lightning, Bernie tries initially to ignore her, but she soon realises this is for real. Then if that is not enough her gran comes to her to tell her one of her guests is dead, Bernie finds herself lying to the police (after all how does one tell the Sheriff that her dead gran looked through the walls and saw the body) marking her out as a suspect. With Ruby's help Bernie sets out to investigate the murder of a man she never even met, her friend having met and checked the gentleman in while she was away. Along the way she upsets some people in ways that surprise her and, when she gets phone calls warning her away from the deceased's vehicle parked at the back of the B&B she realises someone is watching her, suddenly she starts looking at people around her differently.
I did find the "finding out and acceptance of her new ability" all a little rushed, especially given Bernie is a person who requires order and has OCD aspects to her character she is very rigid and set in her ways, where as Ruby is a spitfire, she says what she means and means what she says. There is a reason that visitors to the B&B could occasionally get the scent of lavender and marijuana and it sure was not Bernie. It would almost have made more sense if the characters had been reversed. However you get past this and it is a good read.. The difference in the two ladies is what really helps push the plot along and Bernie finds herself relaxing slightly as Ruby tries to push her as she "lives" vicariously through her staid granddaughter
Given the way the ends book 2 will be on my "to be read list".
(the wedding & lightening hit happen in book 4 of the authors Tri-Town murders series though it is not at all necessary to have read that series to enjoy this one)

WARNING: “Humorous” references to abuse of drugs and alcohol.
What could be less relaxing than being your cousin’s bridesmaid? A murder (which only delayed the wedding slightly), then being struck by lightning, then “resting” in the hospital for two nights. By the time Bernadette (Bernie) flew home to Arizona, she was too tired to absorb any information. Her friend had covered for her at her 3-room B&B, and with only one guest checked in earlier that day, she…Just, Wanted, Sleep!
While carefully but quickly cleaning rooms for future guests, Bernie is interrupted. She had jokingly told people the house was haunted, but until then, hadn’t seen or heard…Ruby, her grandmother. Fortunately for both, Bernie ate well and exercised regularly, so she escaped an actual heart attack, but she felt it was a near thing. “But wait!” as they say in infomercials, “There’s more!”
Ruby (the ghost of grandma passed) will soon discover a murder victim. Bernie will be in trouble with the police for lying, her personal and professional lives will seem to crumble before her tired, stress-filled eyes, and she will wonder about her cat’s affection for her! Is there a bright spot, some glimmer of hope? Perhaps the blue eyes of policeman Adam Gallagher?
A familiar plot: Woman inherits home from grandmother and opens a B&B, grandmother is sassy and distracting, but ultimately helpful, conveniently handsome and kind policeman.
On the plus side, I enjoy the references to the Arizona desert, Bernie is uptight but a considerate, good person (who briefly suspects people but doesn’t treat them like ax murders). I don’t appreciate the references to extensive drug use, crimes, or immorality, but the book is entertaining and fun otherwise.
3.4/5 Entertaining and humorous with some danger. “Humorous” references to the abuse of drugs (marijuana) and alcohol by the grandmother.

Review: I was in such a mood for a cute cozy mystery series and I discovered this series! It is such a quick read and it is was funny I found myself laughing! This series is a cute cozy mystery for October! I like Bernadette as the main character and thought she was sweet! But I loved Bernadette’s grandmother Ruby! She was a riot and she is a like a firecracker! She is very flirty and put there! Despite her being a ghost she was full of life! I loved the close relationship she had with Bernadette and I’m starting book two!
BOOK REPORT Well, that’s odd: I read The Guest is a Goner today because *reasons*, and then downloaded the free short story The Fraud is Found from the same series and read it, but the latter is nowhere on Goodreads.
Just consider this a Book Report on both
I enjoyed the Sedona setting, the cat, our main protagonist, and the concept of this coziness. The grandmother character was a bit of a caricature, with the whole “wild child back in the day” schtick wearing fairly thin fairly soon.
So, Note To Future Kristi: This series is good enough that if you can get it for free, you’d enjoy reading it whilst beside a pool or beach, with an adult beverage in hand. But it’s not your favorite.
*reasons* I’m still on my mission to read only the books I have on hand (hard copy and electronic) during this, the fourth quarter of 2025. For some reason it hit me today that I’d not returned to the batch of free cozies I’d downloaded in January of 2024 in quite some time, so I figured I’d work through some—if not all—of them over the next few days. All are the firsts in various series, obviously offered by whatever entity provided them almost two years ago in an attempt to get me to buy the rest. Or maybe subscribe to Kindle Unlimited to get them. Which is a distinct possibility down the road, especially when I’m in the mood for a diet of cotton candy for my brain.
Bernadette Maxwell owns Sedona Bed and Breakfast. As a draw to the placer, she has played up rumors about the B&B being haunted, although she never believed that for real. But when she has an electrifying accident, she can now see and hear her resident ghost who turns out to be her eccentric, fun-loving grandmother, Ruby. These two ladies are very likable and fun to observe in their interactions since Ruby is such a “free spirit” and Bernadette is very “serious”.
When one of her guests is found dead, Bernadette is the one the police look at as their prime suspect. Unfortunately, Bernadette is also in danger from the murderer. Because good detectives may be hard to find, Bernadette teams up with Ruby to clear her name and uncover the identity of the killer. Time is of the essence here because Bernadette is about to become the next victim! Will she solve the crime in time?
This was a very enjoyable mystery which falls into my favorite category, a humorous cozy! Having such a unique partner to work with in finding clues makes things more intriguing. Grab your copy and watch as Bernadette and Ruby search for clues to help them find the murderer, before the murderer finds Bernadette!
The is a very cute read about Bernadette (Bernie) Maxwell, who runs a B&B in the converted house her grandmother left her. Bernie has just returned from her cousin Tilly's wedding in Louisiana, which is a tie in to a different series Tri-Town Murders. Covering for her is Darla Darling, who runs the diner and provides breakfast to the B&B. Other businesses in town are Jumping Jack's Jeep Yours and Sarah's Sensational Smoothies. Cute.
While in LA, Bernie is hit by lightning (and somehow survived). This enables her to see her grandmother's ghost, Ruby. Ruby lets Bernie know that the only guest, whom Darla had checked in just that morning is dead. A murder investigation ensues, during which Bernie and Ruby help Deputy Adam Gallagher solve the murder. Almost from the beginning, Berni's life is threatened. A few clues are provided early on, if you recognize them. I thought they were buried in all the other info, so I had no idea. It was Great!! The ending was a little implausible, but what do I know about crime in Sedona, AZ.
Regardless, this was a fast, fun, and engaging read. I highly recommend.
I'm not really sure how I feel about this book, honestly. There's a lot I didn't like, but a few things that weren't so bad. I really didn't like how the main character was portrayed. She seemed very naive, and didn't stand up for herself. And her supposed best friend was very childish, acting like a brat. I just wanted to slap both of them. The ghost of her grandmother seemed a little immature, and not so much a former hippie. I also didn't like how the MC just kept throwing names out without any motive. In fact, they barely even brought up a motive. It all just seemed a little slow and anticlimactic. However, I will admit that my curiosity has been piqued enough to maybe consider reading at least the next book. I liked how she kind of has another chance with her grandmother. Even if it's not the same. I also really liked the cat's name. Not significant to the story, but still liked it.
I received a free copy and this is my honest opinion.
This book would have gotten 3 and 1/2 stars if I was able to rate it so. I can say that the book captivated me for the 3 1/2 hours it took me to finish it. I honestly couldn't stand the main character of the book, Bernie. If it wasn't for her relatable, snarky, and funny grandmother (Ruby), I probably wouldn't have been able to complete it. This book will not give you anything that you'll take with you for life, but it was a cute and captivating mystery. I strongly disliked how the writer finally revealed the murderer..it was ultra boring IMO. This is a cute, easy "beach read". I did purchase the second book following The Guest is a Goner in the Sedona Spirit series, A. because it was cheap and B. because I'm interested to see how this will compare to the first! Not knocking it, just don't expect to be intellectually stimulated by this book.
Bernie and Ruby are trying to not get themselves killed while on the hunt for the killer. Bernadette Maxwell to give her the name on her birth certificate , goes away for a few days to attend a wedding. She comes back to her B&B and suddenly she’s aware of her fun loving Grandmother Ruby who is between planes…you see when there’s a death at the Inn the prime suspect is Bernie and her granny are on the case…Deputy Adam Gallagher becomes a firm friend who could become more…Straight laced Bernie and hoot a minute granny Ruby have some fun banter and by the end of the book Bernie has loosened up somewhat and not as stoic thanks Grandmother Ruby…Brilliant story. I loved every bit. The characters are brilliant and their exploits amusing and delightful. Great immersive storytelling. I’m leaving my review voluntarily in my own words.
This is the first book in the Sedona Spirit cozy mystery series by Carly Winter. Bernadette (Bernie) Maxwell is the owner of the Sedona Bed and Breakfast in Arizona after inheriting it from her grandmother. There are rumors that her business is haunted with Bernie not believing in ghosts. After Bernie survives being struck by lightning after coming back from a wedding, she can suddenly see ghosts. Bernie can communicate with her deceased grandmother Ruby, who is a fun-loving hippie ghost. As Bernie is adjusting to her supernatural talent, a guest at the B&B is found dead and the death is ruled a homicide. Bernadette becomes a suspect in the murder while the real killer is still at large. Bernadette requests the help of Ruby to help her solve the mystery before she becomes a victim. I really enjoyed this fantastic cozy mystery novel.
