Many have regarded the Book of Romans as among the most important of all theological documents. When individuals or the church as a whole have experienced awakening and revival, the likelihood is that the Book of Romans played a large part in these events. Augustine, Luther and Wesley were among the greats who were dramatically changed by this book. Thus, as we look at Romans we need to be forewarned that this is a life-changing book. A serious study of it has the potential to bring forth a changed life, a changed family or even a changed community. The reader of this commentary will find that it has a distinct “Israel flavor” unlike most other books of its kind on the market. This is the case since the author spent sixteen years ministering in Israel. Also, unlike most other commentaries the author deals in detail with the great and often confusing mystery of the church being united to Israel (chapters 9-11). The author has utilized a great number of quotes, ancient and modern, from the best commentaries and other sources of information. With this single commentary it may be less likely that the reader will need to consult stacks of other materials in preparation for Bible study teaching or preaching.
