When Darkness Ends is the third book in the 'Moments in Boston' series but it can totally be read as a standalone. It's emotional, it's different, it's unique and it's a bit darker than the other books in the series. It was a book that I couldn't put down. I don’t know what I was expecting but this wasn’t it. The past and present kind of had me confused at the beginning, but I trusted the process and where Marni Mann was going to take me, even if it might break and ruin me.
The before story focused on Ashe and Pearl when they were in college. They had a chance meeting, but Ashe was smitten right from the get go. When Pearl shows up at his home for a study group, he knows he has to do what he can to find her again. They are 2 people from very different worlds studying very different subjects, but Ashe breaks down any and all walls Pearl has. Ashe is what book boyfriends are made of. He is pretty darn perfect and supports Pearl and her life choices. I just loved him. I honestly thought he would end up being more of a douche, but he wasn't. He was just perfection. Even when he made one decision that kind of skewed my vision of him, it was for a good reason. I understood it, but didn't want to.
And Pearl was just a vision. She thought she knew where her life was headed, but did everything in her power to make the most of her life, her talent and life with Gran. She was the daughter/granddaughter you wished you had supporting you when you needed help the most. She knew hard work and she knew what she needed to do in order to survive. Luckily, she found a man that understood where she came from too. I just loved these two together, but I loved Gran and her gentle power she showed in the scenes she was in. Her presence was a spark on the page that brought light to Pearl in the darkness.
"Baby, love doesn't shackle you; it makes you fly.
The After was a bit of the darkness to the light of the Before. This part confused me and had me hurting and questioning everything I thought I knew. But like I said before, I was trusting the process that Ms Mann was taking me on. I won't go into too much of the After because I think that would ruin the journey for the reader. Go in blind, or as blind as you can and feel all the emotions of the story. Experience where the writer takes you and how she brings light into the darkness. This book is a bit more suspenseful than the previous two, but it was the beauty of the storytelling that really drew me in and kept me turning those pages.
Overall, this story is unique in the way it is told and I absolutely fell in love with the characters Before and After. But boy, was it a complex journey I didn't expect and had my emotions all over the place. Beautiful, difficult, unexpected twists and just wow! Marni Mann always brings something new and different and surprises me. Don't miss this one!
"You think I pulled you out of the darkness. But, Pearl, you pulled me out too."
