Khan Abdul Wali Khan (Pashto: خان عبدالولي خان, Urdu: خان عبدالولی خان, born: 11 January 1917 – 26 January 2006) was a British Indian and later Pakistani democratic socialist and Pashtun leader, and served as president of National Awami Party. Son of the prominent Pashtun nationalist leader Bacha Khan, Wali Khan was an activist and a writer against the British Raj like his father. His early years were marked by his involvement in his father's non-violent resistance movement, the "red shirts" against the British Raj. He narrowly escaped an assassination in his early years and was later sent to school at Dehra Dun. In his late teens, he became active in the Indian National Congress. After the formation of Pakistan in 1947, Wali Khan became a controversial figure in Pakistani politics during his political career because of his association to the Congress which opposed the creation of Pakistan. A respected politician in his later years, he contributed to Pakistan's third constitution, led protests for the restoration of democracy in the 1960s and 1980s. In the 1970s, he also served as the parliamentary leader of opposition in Pakistan's first directly elected parliament.
Beyond reality for those who studies books which have been taught in our school about the partition of the subcontinent, this book contain nothing to be in the list of banned books.
Although well written the central thesis didn't seem clear. Was it that the Muslim League were British puppets? Or that the British policies fanned the flames of sectarianism or communalism? I think both of these points have been well established. There were some interesting points made towards the end of the book, namely that the British created Pakistan to act as a barrier to the spread of communist influence.
Quite controversial along with bitter truths and biased opinions but is a must to read book to see how the other side works, thinks or how they saw the partition of Pakistan and India. This book has immense knowledge on what happened, why it happened the way it happened.
A failing aristocratic want to keep grip on society by showing he is a writer of books. Wali khan is a great model of a failed leader, with no legacy. Only they want to stay in power and make money, at the cost of pushing his people and society backward.
An eye opener! From British occupation of India to Muslim League and Congress power struggle. Great insight on what actually happened in NWFP during the partition.
Informative, revealing and sometimes shocking. Good to read a different perspective. Repetitive at times. Proper citations would have improved authenticity of this controversy inducing book.
This book is written on pre partition incidences to Pakistan's first formation of government. This book contains enormous realities and exposes the reality of so called leaders during the subcontinent partition. Beyond this it also covers enormous realities which are significantly highlighted by the author in a manner which exposes the mullahs of that time who sold their faith on the some wages offered by Britishers to use Islam in their favor. Beyond these those mullahs said that loyality with the British is the service to the Islam.
The one thing I liked the most about the author is that he provided references of his writings on each topic. It also exposes the many leaders realities insightfuly. If anyone is interested in pre partition history this is a book to read and also another book written by "Abul Kalam Azad India Wins Freedom".
This is a book which is based on the realities and too much different from those books we have read in Pakistan Studies books in schools and colleges.
Spectacular! This book clearly tells about the real events in the division of subcontinent. Fantastic! This book tells completely different things than the history books taught at schools, which only says about how cruel the congress and British was and how innocent, pure and incorrupt Muslim league was!! Cant even study these schools books without laughing after reading this.
