When Barbara MacMillan heard who her new husband would be, she could not believe it! Colin MacKinnon is the most infamous Laird in all of Scotland, a man who built his clan from scratch with nothing but his cunning mind and fearsome war tactics. How can she share a home and a bed with a man like that?
When the two meet, Barbara sees that the rumors which pictured him as devilishly handsome were right, and he is actually much more civilized than she expected. However, her good luck will not last long as Colin and Barbara's uncle go into an intense argument that shocks everyone. That night, both men went to bed, but only one woke up the following day…
Barbara's uncle is nowhere to be found, and the evidence against Colin is more than enough to convict him! Barbara's clan locks him up, but they all know the terrifying truth; Colin's clan will bring war and destruction upon them in a matter of days, whether their Laird is guilty or not.
Barbara finds herself in a dead-end; if she leaves Colin in prison, her clan is doomed, but how can she trust a man who killed her uncle over a simple argument? All she wants is one good reason to doubt that he is the murderer, and after a lot of thinking, she realizes that there is one piece that does not fit the puzzle.
With that in mind, all that is left now is to free the beast, hoping that there is a beating heart within him…
1.5 stars It was a little dull. What bothered me most about this was that modern language was used in what was supposed to be a historical story. Colin & Barbara didn't have much chemistry in the beginning. The story does pick up a bit when Barbara & Colin meet up in the dungeon & take to the road.
Thank you to the writer for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st book in the Highlanders’ Partners in Crime series that ends with an HEA. The bones of this book are good, but the author does not take advantage of the story. The characters seem to change personalities as the story goes on. Barbara gets along well with her father. He listens to her and values her opinion, until her opinion matters. Once Colin is thrown in the dungeon, Barbara can get no one to listen to her regarding his innocence. Colin is a hard, but fair laird. He gives a harsh first impression, but turns into a leader who has a hard time making a decision later on.
>My largest issue with this book is the editing. I counted 7 glaring errors using words that were just wrong. Writing a book is a great achievement. If the author didn’t have anyone to edit the book besides spell-check, the author should have read the book to herself out loud. When you slow your eyes down to read aloud, you will catch errors. If the author didn’t care enough to edit this book, I really felt she didn’t care enough for the book to be read.
>This book is appropriate for a new adult (17+) audience. I am giving this book 3 stars. This book is very G-rated and mentions God a lot. As far as I can tell, the book is not grouped in the Christian genre. The plot, as written, is one that is written a lot. The author did not add anything to this story to make it stand out, with the exception of glaring editing errors.
The title and concept of this book gave me higher expectations than it could deliver on. First off lets get this out of the way, the title describes this book as steamy. Which it is not. Not even kind of. There is maybe a scene at the end but it was basically a fade to black moment. The story follow Colin and Barbara, two people who are in different clan and are set to be married to strengthen alliances. Colin is supposed to be this brutish man that makes everyone uncomfortable but secretly have a heart of gold. And honestly he was neither of those things. He was just an outright dick at the beginning and then has a completely 180 degree change and it a sweetheart. It didn't make sense and made his character super unbelievable. Barbara was supposed to have a backbone, and I guess she did but I just didn't like her character to feel overly attached to anything she did. I guess I was just hoping for something a bit more interesting and dynamic, but this story was really bland. There was supposed to be this whole criminal break out plot but it was all super easy and held no tension in the story at all. Which basically described the story as a whole. No tension. It really wasn't for me and towards the end felt a little preachy about God's plan and how marriage is the most perfect and pure thing anyone can ever do. The writing was fine and it wasn't a totally 1 star read because I did get through it but if you read any amount of romance, this isn't something I would recommend.
I really enjoyed this story. Smart, beautiful, honest women are the very best to read about. Together with a strong courageous man, with honor and we have a hero worth reading about. Together their love story was so wonderful, and I really enjoyed the time, thank you, Jack.
Words and phrases used were often in modern English and did not fit the era in which the stories take place. The plot was okay, interesting clash between 3 clans, but the characters were very flat and underdeveloped. Often a character would change his mind and behavior with almost no transition.
Olivia has written a story that is filled with suspense, intrigue and deception. The strong characters of Barbara and Colin were well suited for each other. Barbara was strong in her beliefs and loyalty and couldn’t believe that Colin was capable of harming another unless it was in battle.
I really enjoyed this book: a good plot, great action, believable characters. But she either skipped using an editor or she needs a new one: so many case and wrong word errors, I was totally distracted.
Poorly developed characters and plot, skipped some just to get to the end. Heroine remained consistent but hero went from brute to well mannered in one or two sentences. Terms used for the period were wrong as manner house to castle and so many others
Oh this was not exactly what I had in mind. I read it all but it wasn’t very authentic. Lots of “huh?” And “let’s figure it out” and well as lots of contractions. Not to mention the plot wasn’t great. But an easy read.
This story started out , but then kind of fizzled out. I am taking this author out of my following because it has an extended ending...I paid for the entire e
