Horace, one of Lady's brothers has just lost his job--which is a recurring theme with him. He had been working with the police dept-more of community service-but they did pay him a little something at least. Before that he had been working at the grocery store as a stock clerk-he had been fired from there but he really did not like that job anyway. He did like working for the police dept!
Lady picked him up to take him back to the hotel where they lived. Problem--Horace smelled like he had been smoking pot--they had to get that smell off him because the landlady would have a fit!! They went to the grocery store to pick up something that would take that smell away. It was the one where Horace used to work. While there they spotted the owner up on a ladder and they got to talking. The place was a mess and outdated items were on the shelves. Horace mentioned it to him and his ex boss told him he needed more employees--long story short--he got that job back again. Horace was not all that happy about it--but it solved their immediate problems!
Lady picked up a couple of items including a piece of Tongue which she remembered that a guest at the hotel happened to like--and off she drove back to the hotel where Mrs. Poole, the owner, had her go to her study room to read more about witchcraft things, It was boring and Lady was about to doze off when her friend, (who just happens to be a ghost) walks into the room. Her friend decides to show Lady how to go to different dimensions (with her cat along). As they strolled through the hotel they spotted a real monster--they just about made it back to reality. Of course they all, Mrs. Poole included, were trying to figure out what it was and how to get rid of it!
Meanwhile the Grocery owners brother was found dead by his wife where he was sitting in a living room chair. While trying to help figure this out it suddenly occurred to her ghost friend that her employer (a Djinn by the way) had not been seen. After convincing Lady to go into his room--she found him dead--but can Djinns really die? Another mystery to be solved by all and sundry.
Did they figure out what made the man die. Was it natural causes--or murder-and if murder--who did it? What about that monster that was roaming the hotel in another dimension. What was Horace going to do now that the grocery store was closed for the duration? And about the Djinn--what happens with him? You will have to read this book to find out!!

Horace lost his job with the police department. Lady takes him to the grocery store, where he gets his 'old job' back. But that is short-lived when the police close the store due to tainted food! Now he is doing Lady's job for Ms. Poole. Lady is studying and Otsuya pops in on her. Otsuya says she can help her with her studies. When they do 'astral projection' they hear some noise. They find a creature whom Ms. Poole thinks is a manticore. Does this creature have anything to do with the food incident? The man that died was Dave's brother Doyle, who is Otsuya's boss! Can they get the creature to go back where it came from? Interesting. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I have read the whole series, so far. The stories are interesting. The settings are picturesque. The characters are awesome. I read a book, usually in a 24 hour period because Once I start I am unable to put the it down. This last story, "Slip of the Tongue" was exceptionally well put together. The ending was great. It was unexpected. I think Raven Snow has found her niche. Writing is her "thing". I highly recommend reading her books. Please start at the beginning because , while the stories stand alone, the characters have developed nicely over time. Thank you, Raven Snow. I am a fan and a happy reader.
The ending was not as wrapped up as I would have Liked. I feel let down when a book ends like this one did. The twists and turns were good , but explain the outcome more. The characters were lacking some of their personalities..Not her best book.
Another winner in the series, and a couple of twists and turns I wasn't expecting at all! Horace might just be growing up haha.. Or not. Stayed up all night last night to read this book, and then dove right in to book 15. Well worth a little (ok, a lot) lost sleep.
I always enjoy these books, and find the storylines different and interesting, but light and easy to read. This was no exception. Another creative imaginative adventure for lady and her friends, which was enjoyable to read.
