Minutes after solving his first murder, Clark Thomas receives life-changing information about his past. But time waits for no one.
He receives a late-night call from Detective Gomez soon after the body of a locally famous entertainer washes up on the Myrtle Beach shore. The department is under enormous pressure to solve the high-profile case quickly. They call upon Clark to help investigate but to do it quietly.
Clark soon learns there was more to this entertainer than met the eye. He goes behind the curtain of the popular Gladiator Games Dinner Show and meets the performers and victim's coworkers. He learns that the entertainer with a sparkling public persona was not as squeaky clean as he appeared.
Clark lends his unique ability to tie seemingly unrelated clues together as he races to solve the case. Along the way, he learns more about his wife's death.
What he learns shatters his perception of the woman he once loved.
"A cozy mystery full of twists that will carry you through the Grand Strand as if you were there on vacation. A true "beach read" full of fun." - C. Hope Clark, author of the award-winning Edisto Island Mysteries in praise for Book 1 of the Myrtle Beach Mysteries: Death on the Boardwalk.
Caleb is a member of the International Thriller Writers and Southeastern Writers Association, the author of five novels, social media marketer, woodworker, occasional golfer, reacher of things on tall shelves, beach walker, shark tooth finder, and munchkin wrangler.
His two Lucas Caine Adventure novels, Blackbeard's Lost Treasure and The Search for the Fountain of Youth, were both Semi-Finalists for the Clive Cussler Adventure Awards Competition.
He is currently at work on the next book in the Myrtle Beach Mystery Series.
He lives in Myrtle Beach with his wife and son (the munchkin).
I think I liked this one better than the first. The story was very intriguing, never lacked or got boring. I like stories where you gather clues and figure out the killer. Looking forward to the third. Hoping it's going to be about his wife's death 🤞 Clark helps solve the murder of a local celebrity/Roman Colosseum theater worker.
“You’re like an amateur sleuth or something, right?”
“We’re going to learn who killed Connor West.”
“He washed up with the king tide.”
Another enjoyable Myrtle Beach mystery by Caleb Wygal. It is refreshing to read a cozy mystery with a male protagonist. I love Clark as an amateur sleuth/bookstore owner and of course the beach setting is one of my favorites. He once again finds himself investigating a murder in Myrtle Beach. Unlike the first one, where the dead body was in his bookstore, this one is a dead body washed ashore. And how do we know that the man who was washed ashore was murdered? He had a sword in his chest! And not just any sword, but a gladius, the kind of sword used by gladiators in battle. Very unique and intriguing! Wygal creates a fictional business in Myrtle Beach that is a dinner in a built coliseum that shows gladiators battling a la those Medieval Times dinner theaters. And the murdered man was the star of the show. This book takes Clark over various parts of Myrtle Beach as he meets with many suspects to try and solve the murder. A lot of good red herrings throughout. I will say that I figured it out but still thought the mystery was well done. My only complaint is that the typos are way too many. I would love to read the next books before they are published and help get those fixed in advance! But looking forward to the next one.
This was the second book of the Myrtle Beach Mysteries (that I was fortunate enough to get in on the ground floor with this series) that I received from the author in return for an honest and fair review.
This novel is what I consider to be almost an homage to the amateur sleuth stories (I believe that in the review for the first book that I used the metaphor of "Murder She Wrote" as the main character is not only a bookstore owner but also a ghostwriter for an author of some renown) as the main character utilizes "skills" that have been developed by being a mystery aficionado (reader of many mystery books).
This story reads very well and comes at the murder from the viewpoint of a non-professional (although he makes several references to the fact that he was able to solve a murder in the first book of the series). I use the metaphor of "Murder She Wrote" as there is no reference to the ability or effort of the police but the amateur manages to solve the crime in a matter of days.
That being said, the book reads very well and flows effortlessly. As such, I feel that this book would easily rate a solid four stars out of five.
As with any review, this is only my five cents worth,
Death Washes Ashore had me from page one. To pick up a murder mystery without all of the gory descriptions and vulgar language is extremely refreshing. I can not wait for Death On The Golden Mile!
2nd book of the series! What a good book. It keeps you guessing! I was surprised I got the murder right this time! I liked all the twists that kept appearing. It was a great read! Highly recommend.
Was a bit skeptical as had problems reading the first book but this one kept me engaged, with no as I would say boring parts. Congrats Caleb on a well written story.
just finished reading...Became a page turner....loved the detail Caleb includes( i.e. Gumbo Limbo lane etc.)...also, as a long time Myrtle Beach resident, loved the local landmarks, eateries and other references.... looking forward to the next book!
This author is perfecting his craft. I enjoyed the first book in this series, but found this mystery even more entertaining. Think Myrtle Beach should actually start up a Gladiator Games attraction….sounds like fun ! I’m looking forward to the 3rd book, coming out later this summer.
I really loved this mystery!!!! It takes place in Myrtle Beach South Carolina. Minutes after solving his first murder mystery Clark Thomas receives life changing information about his past but time waits for no one. He receives late night message from Detective Moody soon after the body of a locally famous entertainer washes up on the Myrtle Beach Sea shore. The department is under enormous pressure to solve the high-profile case quickly. They call upon Clark to help investigate but do it quietly. Clark soon learns that this is more to this entertainer than meets the eye. He goes behind the curtain of the popular Gladiator games dinner shows and meets the performers and the victim's coworkers Clark lends his unique ability as he races to solve the case. Along the way he learns the cause of his wife's death. What he learns shatters his perception of the wife he once loved!!!!! A great read that you won't be able to put down!!!!
This is the second mystery in this particular series. And picks abruptly where the first left off. Clark Tomas, the sleuth, is involved not only in the mystery of what happened to his wife, but the current one. An actor involved in a Gladiator themed Medieval Times restaurant/show is found dead on the beach. It was a great way to continue the series.
The library had this on display, I suspect because later this month the author will be coming to the library for an event. Welp, I’ve read the first book, because I happened upon the author one time, and I got a signed copy of it. And so why not go ahead to the next book! It’s a local author (from Myrtle Beach) and it’s cool to see a local author writing a story set in a place he personally knows.
I feel mostly the same on this one as I did on the last one. It’s not generally my genre, or subgenre (“cozy mystery” is a subgenre according to Goodreads?), but it IS fun. This one, it makes a bit more sense that Clark is able to poke into different people’s lives to solve the mystery, since he’s already been pivotal in solving one murder in the community. It also helps that he knows someone on the staff of the business.
That being said: uh, Clark, my man? I feel like the reveal you did at the end of who had dun it was a bad time? I would think more people would object to him making a dramatic unmasking scene *during a memorial service.* I don’t know when else he would do it, though, given that’s where everyone is at the key moment, but maybe more acknowledgement that not everyone is cool with this.
I am also not fond of when, in-story, the characters or narration say something like, “Oh, the character looks like this celebrity!”. I get that sometimes the author imagines a fictional character looking a certain way, and it’s hard to get that across to the audience in first person without the dreaded Mirror Scene, but it also feels a bit cheap to say, “Oh, yeah, I get told I look like So-And-So sometimes!” instead of a more detailed description.
[There are also some quibbles with how the Gladiator Games are run, but that’s less of a problem with the writing and more that I would be a pedantic douchebag if I went to this place. It’s kind of supposed to be a bit of a fantastical take on ancient Rome, like Medieval Times is for a medieval tournament.]
These are overall fairly minor criticisms in the grand scheme of things. I had fun reading this mystery, and the author gives us enough candidates so that we can keep guessing who the murderer was. Check it out! Read it! Support local authors!
Was it murder? That's the question arising two years on from Autumn's unexpected death, now raised by Detective Gomez. While pondering that resuscitated puzzle, author, bookstore owner and amateur sleuth Clark Thomas gets a message to meet Gomez at the same beach his ex-wife's body was found...there's another corpse to check out. Did Connor West's killer come from his present or his past? How was his current job involved?
Caleb Wygal's Death Washes Ashore is Book #2 in his Myrtle Beach Mysteries series and a twisty, riveting tale it is too. The police want the case closed quickly, but only Clark and Gomez' patience makes that remotely possible, as the number of suspects mounts and the wrong person is arrested.
Clark is a book store owner with an uncanny knack for for pieces of the puzzle together to solve a mystery. This time he gets a call from Moody to look at a dead gladiator, complete with sword in his chest. He was the lead in the Gladiator Games shows that are very popular there. Turns out Moody should not have called him as the MBPD needed a win on this one. Politics. You know Clark is going to get involved anyway and can be pretty certain that he puts the pieses together. The very interesting part is how he does it.
I read this only because of the last line in the first book of the series. The main character is nice but it is kind of blah throughout. At the very end of the first book the detective whispers to the main character that she thinks his wife was murdered instead of having a heart attack as he thought. I wanted to find out why she said that. After reading a so-so mystery that is more a travelogue for Myrtle Beach than anything else, the question remained unanswered. Great marketing because I have to read on
There were so many people and so much information it was hard to figure out who killed Connor. It was a good book but I gave it average rating because it wasn’t as gripping as other books I have read. It is hard to follow the books because it’s unbelievable that this book store owner had the time and these”connections” that give him access to all the people surrounding Connor.
I have a hard time with this series because he isn’t a cop whose job it is to solve crimes. It’s just too far fetched for me.
I bought this book at a booksigning where I got to meet the author. Being a local, I appreciate the accurate Grand Strand detail Caleb works into the setting, and he paints a really scenic picture of the beauty of the area. I like Clark as a main character amateur sleuth. He keeps me guessing on the whodunnit till the very end. Good job on the cliffhanger which will send me seeking out Book 3!
Clark solved his first murder and is now helping solve the second. He is a Widower and a ghost writer who wishes to start writing his own novel. He owns a bookstore and enjoys solving crimes. This time the leading Actor of the popular Games Dinner Show is found dead. A fast read with Action, suspense and secrets set in Myrtle Beach. Recommended.
I’m enjoying this murder mystery series written by Myrtle Beach’s own Caleb Wygal.
A widowed bookstore owner who accidentally has become an amateur sleuth. Not jaw dropping but it keeps your interest especially if you are familiar with Myrtle. It’s just a neat, fun series
If you’re look for a cozy mystery read, this is the series for you! Couldn’t read it fast enough and absolutely loved the real/fictional settings of this book! Myrtle Beach locals especially… read this series!!
These is the 2nd book from Caleb Wygal that I have read. I really enjoy that it is set in Myrtle Beach my home away from home. I imagine myself in the story and get caught up in the places and with the people. Really enjoyed it!
