Not everything sparkles like it should, or so Mallory is beginning to suspect. Fairy godmothers should be all about light and love, not rule-breaking and political intrigue.
And dragons? Since when are dragons real? And who thought that was a good secret to keep from everyone’s favorite vegan vampire?
Mallory ditches a few more magical misconceptions as she, Alex, and her crew hunt down a murderer and try to save the Society’s mayoral selection (not election) from imploding.
USA Today bestselling author Cate Lawley writes humorous, action-filled mysteries that frequently contain paranormal elements.
When Cate's not tapping away at her keyboard or in deep contemplation of her next fanciful writing project, she's sweeping up hairy dust bunnies and watching British mysteries.
Cate is from Austin, Texas (where many of her stories take place), but has recently migrated north to Boise, Idaho, where soup season (her favorite time of year) lasts more than two weeks.
She's worked as an attorney, a dog trainer, and in various other positions, but writer is the hands-down winner. She's thankful readers keep reading, so she can keep writing!

My favorite vegan vampire is at it again. She and Alex need to solve a security breach at HQ, but before they can do that, not just one murder happens, but two! This is a fairly quick funny read that is just what I needed during these stressful COVID-19 times. Mallory is as scatterbrained as usual and it’s always fun to try to figure out her thought process. Alex is yummy as always and it’s awesome to see everyone else, too. Boone especially gets some extra time in this story and I’m glad. Because who could ever hate such a special doggo? We get a new character in the form of Madeline. I like her. A lot. And I’m so glad I discovered she has a series of her own. Now I must read them! There is one character I’m concerned about at the end of this tale and it’s driving me a bit loony. I hope everything ends up ok and I look forward to Mallory’s next adventure.
I felt like the author was using this book as a crossover to promote another series. This didn’t feel like a Vegan Vamp book. Vague references to Santa were dropped throughout to drum up interest in a companion novel that’s not part of of the main 6 books in this series. Also a new character was introduced and just became part of the gang as soon as they met her. It didn’t make sense since she was a suspect in their investigation, but as soon as they met her she was a fully trusted part of the team with no explanation. Same as with Santa little vague nuggets of info were dropped snouts this new character since is a character in the other series the author is trying to promote. I know she did this before with Star, but with Star it felt natural and fit with the story. This did not. I felt like the storyline of this one was secondary to promoting her other books. Mallory wasn’t her usual bubbly self. This story wasn’t as lighthearted and fun as the first five. I’m not going to continue with this series if this is going to become the norm.
Sometimes you run into story characters that, the more you read, the more you want to read about them. All of Cate Lawley's series fall into that category for me. Even with seemingly everything wrapped up with Alex & Mallory's love life at the end of this story, perhaps there's another book or two that could be done. What about Wembley, Boone & the other emergency enforcers? What about the future of“Tangwystl!”? Still, The Selection Shenanigans is a great story. Who wouldn't want to work with a FG while turfing yet another demon out of Austin & thie earthly plane. Now I know why they say 'Keep Austin Weird'. Perfect cover for the enhanced & their Society. But I understand that even the mandatory stay at home order can't give writers enough time to write in all their series. After all, writers are readers too. So, if this is the last Vegan Vamp novel, maybe we'll get glimpses of them in crossover stories. Many thanks, Cate, for given mme so much fun in the enhanced world.
I love this series!!!! Mallory's inner dialogue makes me laugh - love it. She and Alex are having an issue and need to talk. Another murder and guess who is back on the case? We are still finding out new things about Mallory and what is really is or in addition to a vampire. The fairy godmother was a great add and loved the tie in with the Love Ever After Series (which I also love) and always love seeing Star (Night Shift Witch). This book was a little different to me than the others - in a good way. The ending was one of the best and hope we get even more info in the next book. Hope this series never ends!!!
I am really enjoying The Vegan Vamp series. Cate Lawley Books are fun to read because of her quirky characters and their fun and funny interactions. The whole concept of a Vampire that can't drink blood got me started. I have read lots of serious & sometimes frightening vampire stories. It is a breath of fresh air to read a light series of books that have not only vampires, but Witches,Wizards and Fairy Godmothers!!
This one got a lower rating from me for several reasons. This review will contain spoilers. So unless i misread something, There were a lot of answers it didn't clear up. Who killed Noah and P? What happened to her magic? Is Mallorys sword ok? I didn't like how Alex and Wembley behaved at the end after all the events unravelled. Also Alex is supposed to be a level 4 (more powerful than everyone around him) 6/700 year old wizard, and he is pretty rubbish. So sadly a low rating
I truly enjoyed this new book in the series. True to form Mallory keeps up her witty humor. The mystery proves dangerous to all our favorite characters and difficult to solve. I'm so glad to see the characters relationships and lives moving forward. Love Alex and Mallory:).
Fun crossover with Fairy Godmother Madeleine from Heartache in Heels. Lovely friendship building between Mallory and Star, but Mallory's relationship with her sentient sword Tangwystl made the book special for me.
Mallory and Alex are just starting to figure out their relationship in the final pages of the story, so looking forward to next book in the series. Final Rating: 4.5
Another few murders to investigate, with a new (crossover) character to help, a fairy godmother. At the end, Mallory and Alex have THE (sex) TALK. There's a coda involving puppies that went over my head. Typos: laid for lay twice. Laid is what you did to something else (an egg, down your arms), lay is what you do to yourself (down in bed).
Just when I was beginning to like the main character. I just feel like her train of thought is just too much. Very chaotic. I feel like the group should have had more communication about a back up plan. And because of that, Mallory was left to think up a plan. Obviously it ended badly and was unnecessary. I felt like the mystery of the book was obvious.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
If you are new to this series, please immediately get the other books and read the series in sequence. You can enjoy this one as a stand-alone but you shouldn’t deny yourself the pleasure of experiencing all of the Vegan Vamp’s world.
Didn't love this one. Took some strange turns and got messy. In my mind anyway. Something about the flow of the story, I don't know. will try the next one just to see as this band of crazy characters still has appeal.
I've loved all of the other books but this book read like an advertisement for other books/series and was incredibly difficult to get through. I'm so disappointed because I don't think I'm going to read any further.
Once again, Alex and Mallory are sent out to investigate a death in the enhanced community, but this victim hits too close to home for Alex. As they try to unravel the who and the why of this murder, they may be coming up against a foe even too strong for them and their allies. This is a really enjoyable series, with just enough quirkiness and humor about the odd habits that Mallory exhibits as a vegan vampire, trying to come to grips with her new condition, as well as finding purpose in her personal relationships. This story also introduced a new enchanting character, Madeline, that I am glad to see will be featured in new stories. Lots of action and of course, fighting with her favorite sword. Can’t wait for their next adventure. Disclosure: I am voluntarily reviewing this book and all opinions are strictly my own.
The problem with most relationships is either lack of communication or miscommunication. This story encompasses both between Mallory and Alex. What we have here is a love with problems. Mallory and Alex both love each other but some talking seems to be lacking. Now the mystery part of the story carries the same issue. We have a couple of murders, demons, fairy godmother who has a part in creating a problem and trying to help solve a couple of murders. In trying to find who helped the demon and to get rid of said demon is where the communication or in this case lack of it occurs. Such an interesting story so my advice is read and learn about communication with extras!
Oh wow....demon puppy? I almost wish there was more to the story to tell us what happened. And Twangwystl is she going to be doing stab, stabby, stab again.
