My kids and I have read/ sung our way through this book over the past couple months or so. We really enjoyed the devotional and author backgrounds that went along with each of the hymns. I grew up with hymns but my kids only hear them occasionally at church (our services are usually a combo of contemporary and traditional) so this was a great introduction to many of the “classics.” I was surprised at how much they enjoyed singing these.

The devotions are definitely on the lengthier side, so they aren’t ideal for the littlest ones, but my elementary age big kids stayed engaged.

We will be revisiting this book in the future.

I most appreciated the art that accompanies each hymn, with pastel colors depicting God’s creation. It sets a calming and hopeful tone for the truths contained in this book.


Wholly Worshipful

I was most moved to read the story of Robert Lowry, who composed the hymn Nothing but the Blood of Jesus. He was a both a preacher and a musician, and I found inspiration in the fact that he could write both sermons and songs.

Partly a hymnal and partly a devotional, this book is wholly worshipful. Housed in a vibrant hardcover, this coffee-table-style book is meant to be read, used, and enjoyed.

Goes through several popular hymns and it’s background. Interesting to read how they came about and the stories of their authors. Will be nice to have as I start teaching my kids the different hymns as it has all the verses and melodies of the songs.

Geared toward younger listeners, this is an excellent addition to the family library. Each entry includes a personal story from Joni to illustrate the importance of the hymn as well the origin story of each one. Includes basic sheet music and lyrics as well.
