Great Teacher, Great Series, Great Fun

This series deals effectively and respectfully with some serious themes, but it does so in a very fun way. The characters are mostly believeable and interesting. I love the main character both for his strengths and his flaws. It can move you to both tears and laughter, possibly at the same time!

I’ve finished my very first manga series! (Yey!)

Onizuka-sensei will ALWAYS be there for his students and help them on whatever problems they are facing (trigger warning: depression, rape, suicide, bullying, etc.) but Onizuka’s way is a little too unusual! Of course the students were also wonderful in each of their own way but I especially love Kikuchi and Urumi, these 2 were really the ones who caught my heart!

I’ve really enjoyed GTO to the fullest. It was funny, thrilling, sad, dark, there were honestly too many emotions to go around the series which makes it super great! GTO would’ve been perfect if Onizuka-sensei wasn’t perverted though, I think this is the only thing bothered me. But setting that aside, GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka was definitely amazing, it’s one of a kind!

Now, time to watch the anime adaptation!

GTO is my favorite sexist comic. Reading it is a guilty pleasure. Somehow it has managed to be one of the most gender-typed manga I’ve read and still kept me excited for each new volume, right up to the end. The story is ridiculous and ridiculously fun, and despite all his numerous faults, I always end up rooting for the idiotic gang biker-turned-teacher in all his escapades, from saving students to wacky attempts to lose his tyrannical virginity. The nearly-immortal teacher can turn the bitterest of enemies into loyal followers. The large cast contains many fascinating people who, despite Fujisawa’s penchant for dramatic flair, could potentially exist.

My favorite things about the art are the toning and the scratchy inking style that still manages to look smooth. Though it’s quite clear where the artist’s sexual preferences lie, he’s smart enough to make some of the men look good as well. He uses clear gutters and no overlapping, and while there’s nothing particularly creative about the layout, he varies panel shape and size to establish visual rhythm. The frequent splash pages are almost always great. He’s not afraid of backgrounds, and the body language is personalized and expressive.
Humor, a fast-pace, and good art keep the manga rolling right up to the somehow disappointing end.

It’s not that the ending was bad: it has all the action, drama, and humor of any other GTO story. But that’s the problem. Having already set the bar for these three things so high, Fujisawa has difficulty surpassing it in a way grand enough to feel like a final climax. Instead, it just feels like another GTO story. It doesn’t seem like an end. I guess the idea is that everything is back to normal, and there will be plenty more stories to come. We just won’t get to read them. Which is probably just as well, because Fujisawa has already pulled out more stories from his protagonist’s circumstance than the average writer would dare. Yet, I have a feeling that if he had wanted to, he could have made another ten volumes and still kept his readers hooked.

Wow. Words can’t even describe how much I loved reading this series. I’ve always heard so many things about GTO and despite it being an older series, it’s still hyped up to this day. And honestly? It is WORTHY of all of that hype. Onizuka is such an amazing and iconic character and I completely understand why he’s so beloved. He may come across as just your average delinquent but he really has a heart of gold. The way he was able to bring together not only the class and really change their lives, but other teachers and the people around him. It really is such a special series and I loved reading every minute of it!

My favorite series. I put off reading the last two volumes for sooo long because I didn't want it to end. :( Then I was sad.
Then I learned "Shonan 14 Days" is being translated and will start being released in 2012! yeah, boy! I've already started reading it online, though, and so far it's not as good. BUT, it's just good to have Onizuka back. :D
I also haven't read more than the first volume of Shonan Junai Gumi, yet, either so I guess I have that to look forward to, as well.

After reading all of GTO, I can safely say that this one of the funniest things I've ever read. Maybe GTO just connects well with my sense of humor, but I've never laughed out loud more at anything I've read. I would highly recommend this series because of the humor and the sincerity of the characters and writing by Toru Fujisawa. Onizuka is stupid, immature, but serious about his job and helping people. That makes his antics entertaining and easy to accept. What is also impressive is how consistently good the series is. The beginning starts off a little slow, but once Onizuka starts becoming a teacher at Holy Forest, GTO is very entertaining and hard to put down. I would argue that this series is pretty timeless too. While it references things like Final Fantasy 7 and Biohazard (Resident Evil) which are old like myself, something about GTO still feels pretty modern and current. The middle school students are brats, horrible to their teachers and each other, and yet are complicated and very insecure. This is just one of the many things that GTO gets right. Even the romantic scenes between the characters like Anko and Noburu feel real and are enjoyable to read. I could heap more and more praise on GTO, but I will just say that any teacher or fan of stories set in a school should give this series a try. It isn't totally realistic, but it is still easy to relate to. GTO may not be the best manga series I've read, but I'd say it is probably my favorite.

This epic conclusion to the Onizuka saga can be summed up best by a line from the "Special Supplement" at the end: "The chief told me that there's a 43 page hole in the fresh supplement, do you think you can fill it?" Yes, the scene between Ms. Sakurai and Daimon did bring me to tears, not just because of the heart felt message of being "Born Again" but because of how she was always there for her all along. Which I admit reminded me of my own mother. Still, it vaguely felt like such an abrubt end to such a "Great" Series. And of coarse the classic Onizuka line, "What does school mean to you?" Was the most meaningful way to say the end. But it left me wanting more which I guess is never a bad thing.

Read this series first back in adolescence, and as I go through the same books this present day I find how resonant some themes that the author touches upon remain. Surely at face value the series might come across as silly or over the top; but it is in fact deeply rooted in everyday themes, troubles, vulnerabilities, passions among other threads. A real depiction of human connection as a manga can get.

This was a good finish to an outstanding series. What I especially liked about this manga series is that it gives a positive image of people. Those in the manga who caused trouble were always revealed to have had troubling experiences prompting their actions. Onizuka was able to get to the heart of the problem and reform the "bad" people.

This is a guilty pleasure but also a tribute to the power of great teachers.

An appropriate ending to a very inappropriate series. It ends as well as it begins, with irony, humor, a message that the main character delivers despite himself.

Great Teacher, Great Series
One hell of an unorthodox teacher. The way he handles things wouldn't work in the real world but it makes great reading.

Ho pianto, ho riso, mi sono commossa e preoccupata. G.T.O.

The grand finale! Maximum action, nothing goes wrong. I must admit, this tome brought a tear to my eye. Faced with the storm and the tears of our favorite heroes, we're treated to incredible double-page spreads, and the characters are so sublimely drawn that our faces are bathed in tears.
It's time to take stock. This last volume is excellent, on a par with the 17th for me. The story draws to a close. My heart clenches at the thought of not being able to immerse myself for hours on end in this universe that has made me think, cry, laugh and see life differently. GTO leaves no one indifferent. So, yes, the humor is sometimes heavy-handed, and the author is a little too focused on sex and perversions, but the message is strong and the end of the manga is very well handled, in the scenario, the cutting of the frames or the drawings that slam like a motorcycle starting off at a dead run.
The author managed to hold me over the 25 volumes. The 17th and 25th volumes will remain my favorites.
And that's it. Time for my last review. I don't think I'll be reading any of Onizuka's other adventures, with the exception of Young GTO. Thank you Fujisawa, thank you Eikichi. I'm going to enjoy life a little better, with a lighter heart. Finally, a quote from PNL: “The city's big, I just want to wander around, free like Onizuka”.
