Mum is dead. The father I never knew has claimed me, and I’ve been uprooted from my world and thrown into a life of privilege. I’m not welcome here. Two boys are leading the school to drive me out, and I’m being followed constantly by two more.
Things are much darker here than I thought; Crescentwood is full of dangerous criminals and dirty politicians. I’m a pawn in a game I don’t know how to play, but I’m stronger than they know.
Trust no one. Corruption rules this town.
***This book is a reverse harem, meaning the FMC will have three or more love interests. The book also has trigger warnings for emotional/physical bullying and abuse, violent scenes, reference to suicide and mature content/swearing, so please do not read if you are easily offended or have the mentioned triggers This book is intended for 18+
My name is Rachel. I live in the UK with my husband and two golden retrievers, and I am an author of dark, contemporary reverse harem romance.
If you love a story with a well thought out plot and good character development that will give you all the feels, then why not give one of my series a go?
Well-developed, great storyline, intriguing characters especially the hot heroes. A fiery strong heroine, displaced in life through troubled and largely isolated upbringing, meets her father for the first time as well as some alpha bad boys. There is bullying; there is threat; there is corruption and not everything is as it seems. The range of personalities and backgrounds of the antiheroes was compelling, mixing privilege and underground. Villains were true villains lending trepidation to the storyline. Attractions were tangible, and while sexual chemistry was burning, I expect more heat in the sheets in book 2.
A mix of young adult coming of age, scheming, and the underground make this story an entertaining read filled with chilling mystery, power struggles, and heady sexual chemistry. Excellent story.
DNF 60-ish% I could have read it entirely but it was late.
Is this a debut? It looks like a debut. It's not a bad one, but not stellar either. A little slow and not dark enough for my taste, when it comes to the subject.
While I dropped it, the best part about the story was definitely Sophie, the main character. I didn't like the others, I didn't like the writing, and I didn't like the editing. I had to re-read some sentences multiples times because I felt I was disconnecting here and there. But Sophie was a good heroine. She has a backbone, doesn't shiver in fear unless faced against her abusive, stranger, criminal lord of a father, she doesn't bend to her bullies, and she is very confident in her skin. She would totally be a heroine I would go back to once the author has more experience and I might try the next series.
Three Divisions was a great read, just what I needed after a few stressful months. It’s fast-paced and action-packed, the story and the building up sexy tension blended masterfully. I really enjoyed Sophie’s character and how strong and determined she is despite life dealing her a pretty crap hand. The boys are also each with their own issues and interesting characters in their own right, I can’t wait to read more about them. Especially Aiden and Ty are so dreamy!! A perfect blend of danger and sexy. I can already see who the RH participants will be and I was pretty frustrated (in a good way) after the cliffhanger ending but luckily, the author is a fast writer so I picked up the second book right after and plunged right back into the world of Crescentwood.
I finished reading Smyth's other series, Pacific Prep, just yesterday and immediately started with her debut novel, the first book of the Crescentwood trilogy. I have to say, what a huge difference in quality, style and editing - basically everything. Where Pacific Prep delivers (great story, plot twists, loveable characters, secrets and intrigues, you can't put it down), Three Divisions lacks. It's kind of disappointing to see a very interesting premise being overshadowed by bland, shallow characters, insta-love, cliches, absurd situations and plot holes.
Sophie has potential as a character, but I just couldn't connect with her. There's also nothing that stands out about her, except for the fact that she grew up in poverty and struggled dealing with her mother's illness. Barett and Preston don't strike me as "kings of the school", they're boring, the reasoning behind their "bullying" (which is actually the wrong term, since there's not much bullying in this bully-romance) is stupid and childish. Aiden and Tyler have potential, but they're far from it. Sophie's dad is basically the epitome of evil, which I find exaggerating.
Overall, it was a fast read, I really like the idea but the execution could've been better. Having a RH with guys that aren't from the same friends group is also something I found refreshing. I'm aware this was author's debut, so I don't want to be too critical - Pacific Prep showed me how amazing her writing skills can be after some refining. I may not continue Crescentwood series (maybe I will, though, just because I hate not finishing what I started), but I am looking forward to any other works by R.A: Smyth.
Holy crap, where to begin?!? I took the liberty of stepping out of my comfort zone to read this book, and I’m so glad I did!!
First off, I freakin LOVE Sophie. I love that she doesn’t take no shit from anyone. And when I say “anyone” I literally mean ANYONE—including her own psychotic father and the entitled spoiled rich kids at her school. Sophie goes through so much, right from the start to the very end you can’t help but hope and pray she’ll catch a break. But at every turn there’s a new obstacle waiting for her. Like the badass she is, Sophie turns her chin up and plows right on through it like the queen she is.
Also, this was the first “reverse harem” I’ve ever read. I was pleased to see at how well it was written. Which is a huge plus in my book!! I also liked having the different POVs from Sophie’s love interests. It helped me soften up to them a bit more even though a couple really put her through hell.
As for the story itself, the plot alone makes this story a definite page-turner. I never wanted to put it down and I wound up binging over half of it in one day. A fair warning: this book covers some pretty sensitive topics; i.e. sexual assault, suicide, drug use, and unprotected sex.
And that cliffhanger!!!! I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here. Thank you for letting me read an ARC of this story. I absolutely loved it.
I read this book in one sitting! I've been reading a lot of books in quarantine and throughout my whole life if I'm being honest, and I really didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. I've read so many bully-type romance books that just get me mad at the side characters for being bullies and the main character for letting it get to her when there's so much more important shit to be concerned about that I quit reading them halfway through.
Sophie is well aware there's more important shit to be concerned about, and so are all the guys surrounding her. This book had just enough petty school drama that the very dark parts hit you even harder.
I've been thinking about reviewing books but no book was good enough for me to go through all the nonsense of making an account. Until this one, but not until I found out this is a debut novel from a new author. I expected to find a full list of books under her name, and was shocked when this was the only one. The pacing and writing in this book was very well done, and I can't wait to see what else we get from Smyth in the future.
What a great debut novel! Three decisions has everything that makes for an interesting and captivating read! Not to mention a fiesty heroine, and group of alpha males that embark on a journey to gain trust while uncovering the truth behind those who claim to be doing what is best for them.
Sophie has grown up with an unstable mother in a rundown council house having only herself to depend on. However, when her mother dies unexpectedly, a father she's never known of suddenly claims her. She's uprooted, moved to America, and suddenly finds herself living in a mansion in wealthy town, and attending Crescentwood an exclusive school. Unsettled and out of place, it's soon apparent, her father only wants her for appearance' sake and the leaders of the one percenters at her new school want her gone. Caught in the middle of a dangerous game she doesn't understand, Sophie is once again alone.
I like this story. It has a different voice/feel to many books in this genre. It's a solid debut from this author. It's part bully, part suspense. There's attraction but no insta-relationship since distrust and suspicion overshadow everything else. Sophie is the most sympathetic character in the book. She's strong but you feel she's nearing her breaking point. Still her resilience is admirable. The chemistry between her classmates Preston and Barrett and her stalkers Aiden and Tyler is palpable. I am not a fan of Preston and hope after he escapes the situation he's in, he can win me over. And even though I imagine Aiden and Tyler will come to the rescue, I look forward to some good old-fashioned testosterone -filled disagreements between the guys before they all come together as Sophie's. I look forward to the next book. Ultimately, I know there has to be a takedown of the Worst Father's Club but I really need to see some petty revenge against Alexis and her girls and Neill. Like total social takedown, destroy their worlds revenge!
Disclaimer I got a free copy of this book to review, my thoughts and comments are up to my discretion and are completely my own. Overall I really enjoyed this book. The best part was the main character, at first her attitude felt kind of cheesy but as she was developed more I really enjoyed the snarky vibe. I think this book was a really good set up for the rest of the series, as it gave a lot of the background to the main characters and love interests. I’d never read a book with this type of romance so that was new. The plot really begins to pick up about half way through, and I think that’s why I definitely see this book as a good starting novel. The rest of the series is definitely needed to really get into the plot, however for introductions and story setting this book really serves its purpose. I liked the main love interests a lot too, and I liked the friendship dynamics between them. It gives a lot more depth and emotion to characters that otherwise could’ve been very flat. The connections formed between the MC and the love interests were also very natural feeling, even if some of it was quite fast paced. The things these guys would say to and about her were absolutely swoon worthy so if you’re looking for a quick, dark romance type book this is definitely the pick for you. I would say this novel has a moderate heat level, but I can see how the future books would be much steamier.
OMG... is this really the first book from this author? This story has literally blew me away.....from the first page I was hooked completely. This author really knows how to put just the right amount of angst, emotion and suspense into the plot so that you keep turning those pages.....i was so engrossed in the story i didnt even realise id reached the end until it was to late.....I don't know how I am going to wait for the next instalment!!! ❤
The characters are just so well developed and interesting, I just loved Sophie, she was so tough and independent but had an air of vulnerability about her which really appealed to me. As for the guys..... I can really see things getting hotter and more steamy in the next book...they are all so different and I'm really eager to see their relationship and chemistry develop with Sophie!
If you are a fan of dark bully romance, full of suspense, secrets and hidden agendas, with a tough heroine who isn't afraid to stand up for herself then you need to read this book!
Rachel you are now a one click author for me!! This is by far one of the best books I've read this year....and I've read a lot of books!!!
I received an ARC from the author and this is my honest review.
While I appreciate the plot and where the author tried to take it, the delivery was underwhelming. The dialogue was like it was written for a bad movie (ESPECIALLY where the MC was involved) and 90% of the time, I was bored, just waiting for something to grab at my attention and stop me from continously day dreaming. I had to force myself to pay attention to what was going on. The characters were severely lacking in depth and were not interesting. I can't name one person in this book who I was appealed by. It's like they were added there for shock value and nothing else. The "father" was such a dramatic villain, I had to roll my eyes mentally everytime there was a scene with him. Every character was trying so hard to be bad-ass and failing big time. The only one that scrapes being tolerable was the female main character.
Safe to say, I didn't find what I was looking for in this book. I think the direction of the book was good but the way it was executed just fell flat.
The story line is fantastic and I cant help but come up with all sorts of theories because I have no idea where we are going to end up! The characters are brilliant and we have a strong feisty heroine who even after going through a troubled life so far, she always seems positive and doesn't care what people think or say about her. Sophie is not to be messed with and after surprising and standing up for herself to her two stalkers, you know she doesn't take shit from anyone!
The guys are all captivating in different ways, what I loved most is that they aren't a group of friends they are separated in 2 and 2 and they all have their own demons and are just fighting to survive in their own fucked up worlds. They don't all get along and I have a feeling Sophie will be the glue that pulls them all together in the end.
Sophie is drawn to all of them yet they aren't all as welcoming to her as others. If her new life wasn't hard enough, no one wants her at school and she cant do what her father asks of her if they don't change their minds soon.
To be transparent, I was given an ARC for my review of this book.
So, I absolutely loved it. One of my pet peeves is reading a book (especially an RH book) and it being only about the men and the sex. This book. This book is full of plot, twists, multiple story lines and POVs (which is my favorite) and has a badass female main character who has had a pretty crap life but is still so strong. I couldn't put this down and read it in two sittings. Don't get me wrong, it has some steam and some sexy scenes. But it also has character development and a story you can't wait to figure out. It was a mixture of sons of anarchy, and bully academy trope that I love love love.
It also has male main characters that are not all part of the same group which was different that what I usually see in RH and I super enjoyed it! It adds an element to the development of the story line! Definitely recommend and can't wait for book two.
Okay so this is a Bully Romance with maffia elements, but you don't know when you start reading this.
Its about Sophie who has lost her mom due to mental problems, and although she knew this day would come its never easy is it. Especially when the social worker makes the announcement her father has been found and want to connect with her and ships her off to a whole other country.
If you think this is why she is getting bullied at school (new girl, noticeably not rich but "trying" to fit in) you would be wrong.
Daddy dearest is not who he claims to be and there are people wanting them gone because of who he really is but nobody knows for sure.
Amazing read and I highly recommend this book to anyone loving the bully aspect and wants some maffia in their live.
Its slow burn and I'm waiting to see the guys band together instead of wanting to murder each other. Guess will have to wait to find out.
I really enjoyed this book! Sophie’s our FMC, she’s from Ireland and lives alone supporting herself and her Mom, who suffers from mental illness. When Sophie’s Mom passes away she’s sent to America to live with her psycho Dad who she immediately finds is not at all who he seems. But who is he really and what does that mean for Sophie? He sets two of his “employees” to trail Sophie, both of whom become smitten with her in no time. Meanwhile, at school two other boys target her because they don’t trust her or her father. This book follows Sophie as she gets bullied, used and as she tries to get her own footing in a world where she has no power...yet. I really like the dynamic of the two friends and the two “employees” and how different they are but they all seem to have a soft spot for Sophie, even if they don’t show it. This book was left in a cliffhanger but not for our FMC which was kinda different and I enjoyed that. I’m looking forward to book 2!
Wow this book really kept me guessing. Sophie is thrown into a dark world of power, money and politics. She is bullied, followed and hurt while trying to deal with the loss of everthing she knew. These characters are continually surprising and you honestly just don't know what crazy thing is going to happen next. I love dark romance and this one was on the borderline of dark for me. Lots of nasty stuff that may trigger some people but has lots of potential for the series to get darker, which I definitely hope will happen. I definitely enjoyed this new authors story and am excited to see where she takes the rest of this series. For people like myself that look at the cover and think paranormal romance I just want to let you know that this series is not at all paranormal.
This is a great start to an amazing series! Holy heck these characters are fantastic. Their is so much to each of them that we found out in this book and yet so much we still need to learn. Sophie is literally taken from the home she only knows to go live with a father she has never known. Yet the father acts like they are old pals. Enter her saviors who yet bring her just as many headaches as her dear old Dad! Preston, Barrett, Tyler and Aiden! These four guys are a mystery, yet they each own a piece of Sophie’s heart in their own way!
This is an amazing start to an awesome story line. There is so many unanswered questions! I really enjoyed R.A. Smyth’s writing. She is detailed in her storyline. She explains in detail what is going on and who is talking. I am really excited for what is to come! Bring on the alpha males! I’m so ready for more!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Where do I start? This is a DEBUT novel by R.A. Smyth and boy has she made me wanna stick around for some more.
The story line and character development in this book is so good. Sophie has had to grow up way before her time and missed out on so much of her childhood, she’s then thrust into a world that is so far out of her element that she’s got to navigate through it practically blind. Luckily this is where the growing up early and fending for herself comes in handy.
I love the development of the FMC throughout the book and I love that the guys aren’t all already friends and don’t necessarily instantly like each other either. So much is at play in the book and we only just scratch the surface with it. I cannot wait for book 2.
A phenomenal debut novel! I have no words to explain how well this story is written! This book has some serious suspense. Sophie is uprooted from her struggling life when her mother kills herself and find out her dad wants her. But he's not the daddy dearest she was hoping for. Immersed in a world of the rich and corrupt, Sophie tries to investigate what her father wants her for but the kings of Crescentwood aren't making it easy for her to blend in. Bullied and alone. There is a major cliffhanger that'll leave you screaming at Rachel for doing this to you! If you like suspense with light romance then you absolutely need ro read this book!
This was so good but that eding. Sophie didn't have easy life and it gets even harder when her mum dies. Suddenly she have to leave her home and go to live with her dad she never knew. Everything is new there. Life and school are so much different in her new place. Things with her dad is not how they looks and Sophie have to be careful. I really liked her because she was strong and she didn't give up so easily. Book was mainly from Sophies pov but we got also guys pov. That way we got to know them a bit better. Can't wait to read next book.
A copy was provided in exhange for an honest review.
This book was so good! It’s tragic yet has this suspenseful side all wrapped up in a mystery. It’s got some bully aspects to it, but that just provides the base of all the desire between Preston, Barrett, and Sophie!
Then you have the father Sophie never knew existed! That’s just say he’s not winning father of year anytime soon! When he had two of his men tail her, we get a whole née set of sexual tension!
You’ll love Sophie’s journey and won’t stop turning the page!
Wow, a new thrilling, twisted and suspenseful bully RH to sink into. . I didn’t know what to expect with this book. This is Smyth’s debut novel I believe and I gotta say it was a knock out. . Emotional, amazing details, wonderful characters and a dark and twisted world that I didn’t want to leave. The plot of a page turner and engaging. There’s so much suspense, unpredictability and an all around riveting read. I love me some bully romance and this was an exceptional read to add to my recommendation list. . Took me a beat to connect with Sophie but when I did I loved being on this journey with her. I could see myself handling a lot of situations as she did, the exact same way so it made for an interesting experience. Her growth was steady, even if in the beginning it was kinda slow, but her development was spot on and I can’t wait to see how she grows more throughout the series. The guys are amazing. They have an interesting dynamic which made me want to dive deeper into their stories so following along was great. All well developed and have this unique energy about them that it’s amazing to watch as they kinda find their footing with Sophie. . I was drawn in from the first chapter. It was intriguing and makes me want to go back and read it again to get lost in this corrupt world. Amazing job by the author I loved this.
Three Divisions • Crescentwood Book 1 *ARC Review* ⭐⭐⭐⭐ @rasmythauthor This book is a dark, high school bully, reverse harem romance & is RA Smyth's debut novel! The storyline, plot, & characters had me sucked in right away. There are several triggers such as drug use, physical abuse, and graphic violence. However, no more graphic than your typical MC/mafia style romance. RA did a wonderful job with character development & creating likeable characters. The book ends with a cliffhanger that leaves me very impatient for book 2. I gave this book 4 stars simply for grammar & spelling mistakes, which will more than likely be corrected during the final editing process before publishing.
4.5. Stars. R.A. Smyth is a new author to me and Three Divisions is definitely the start of what will be a great series. I was definitely interested after reading the blurb and although I don't care for cliffhangers, I had to read this and I'm glad I did. It is really interesting, yes it has bullying but that's not all it has. It was slow at parts for me but still kept my interest. It is well written within the story and characters. I will definitely be looking forward to the next book.
This is a great start to the series and follows the tried and tested (and loved) method of poor orphaned girl shipped off to pastures new in a rich new school run by the super hottie club. Bully enemies to finally lovers.
This one is very entertaining and also adds in 2bad boys and plenty of mysteries! But damn, I forget how much I hate cliffhangers!!!
Fantastic characters and the storyline was awesome!!! Sophie is a strong character that can’t seem to catch a break. The guys have some groveling to do, but they are just what she needs. I can’t wait to find out what happens next!!!!
Omg right off the top this book gives you so much excitement that your left wondering what is ganna happen next I was actually shocked with some scenes and thats not easy to do with me I can’t wait for the next book
