When she’s not churning out her next novel, you can find her with her feet in the sand and a book in her hand or curled up on the couch with her dogs.
This might contain Spoilers for anyone who hasn't read Ms. Lowe's first book in this captivating series, Of Love and Deception.
When we last left Sarah, she had helped move her online "Phantom", Bruce, to an apartment close enough for her to visit. While he wasn't quite what she was expecting, he wasn't in his 30's as he claimed in his messages to her, she tried to remember this was the man who knew her better than anyone. So she thought.
When he turned out to be in his 50's, a divorced ex-con with kids not much younger than her, she still tried to justify all the deceit, despite her parent's objections. Packing her bags and moving out while they were at work, she left them a note, and took a taxi to the man who seemed to love her more than anything! Just like the Phantom loved Christine!
Of Love and Family begins with Sarah spending her first night in Bruce's apartment, where he behaves like a gentleman and sleeps on sofa cushions letting her have the bed. This is the start of her new life. Or is it? She wasn't quite ready to give up her parents and brother and her best friend, her cousin, Addison. She was someone who loved being part of her family and all the relatives and celebrations and holidays that went along with that. She finds herself torn between the contempt her parents have for Bruce and her perhaps misguided love for a man even older than her father. Is Bruce going to be the answer to her dreams?
You'll have to find out for yourself in this compelling story of a young woman who seemed to have everything going for her and gave it up for love.
This book is slower than the first, but it shows how easily a young, naive girl can be sucked in by someone with something as easy as attention, time and the illusion of love. I understand that this is a building block in the series that is entirely necessary for the whole to make sense. I just wish Sarah had listened to her inner self when the warning signs started pinging in her.
As a mother, and someone who hasn't had an ideal life, I am totally able to see that what Sarah believes is totally false, and I am scared for this poor girl that had no experience with the dark side of humanity. As a mother, I want to reach into this book and shake the hell out of Sarah, yell at her to listen to those instincts that keep picking at her. As a mother, I also want to yell at her parents, for not preparing Sarah for the real world, and for trying to use guilt to bring her back. Trying to make your child feel guilty for wanting to live their lives pushes them away, not pull them in!
I'm still not happy with this author, I hate this series, but I'm hoping that the point is to show how vulnerable our daughters are, and how we need to learn to talk to them and protect them without suffocating them.
I'm unsure why the author uses toboggan instead of touque either! I wouldn't want to try to wear a sled as a hat!
I was given this book for an honest, unbiased review. I hope I have done just that here.
This was a great follow up to book one, I couldn’t put it down!! It was a fast read that tugged at my heart while warming it at the same time! I hope there’s a book three on the way, I’m not ready to say goodbye!
I loved the continuation of this heart-wrenching story by Kayla Lowe and couldn't put it down. Well up to the standard of this wonderfully empathetic author.
Girl…. Idk how I’m continuing to read this but I gotta see it through This girl is astronomically naive and dumb I’m continuing to read just so I can see her realize her mistakes
