Nick will do anything to keep his mate safe. Anything.
Even if it means selling his soul to his vampire sire, and rejoining the dark underground of vampires known as the White Death.
Dimitry Yi, infamous anti-vampire extremist, has been missing for weeks.
His rabid followers are losing their minds.
Dead bodies start appearing around the city, marked with the symbol of Dimitry Yi. Riots break out in vampire neighborhoods, even as bombs go off at government buildings and cafes. New York grows increasingly violent and unstable, bringing pressure from many to just give the terrorists what they want.
The message is clear: give them their leader back, or the killings will continue.
Worse, now they appear to be targeting Nick, maybe because he’s famous as a cage-fighting vampire, but more likely from his role as a Midnight, a vampire homicide detective for the NYPD. Someone knows about Nick’s involvement in Dimitry Yi’s disappearance, and they will do anything to get him to release Yi – including targeting Nick’s girlfriend, an obvious “race-traitor” and blood whore to a vampire.
In the end, Nick decides he must look to his own kind for help. Even if that means indebting himself to his sire, Brick, a human-hating vampire with a twisted agenda of his own.

Current works include the gritty, epic, psychic warfare romance, ALLIE'S WAR, which follows Allie Taylor and her antihero partner, Revik, in their attempts to save the world from a dark, psychic force. Her dystopian science fiction romance series, ALIEN APOCALYPSE, features Jet Tetsuo, survivor and slave under alien conquerors, and her GATE SHIFTER series is about a shape-shifting alien and a tough-girl PI from Seattle. Her newest launch is QUENTIN BLACK, a science fiction romance and mystery series that’s a spin-off from Allie’s War but set in our own version of Earth.

“The White Death” is the fifth volume in the ‘Vampire Detective Midnight Series’ by JC Andrijeski, which started originally as a spin-off of her “Quentin Black Series” and follows Naoko “Nick” Tanaka’s, in his second chance at redemption after being transferred to New York, to work as a ‘Midnight’ (a vampire partnered to the human police) assisting the NYPD in their ‘more peculiar’ cases.
Nick Tanaka is accustomed to find himself at the end of the rope facing the beast, but having a mate to care for is a full different kind of ‘beast’. To protect his ‘own’ there is nothing, nothing! Nick wouldn’t do, even if it means relinquish his freedom and loosing everything he has accomplished in the process.
To be honest, this guy doesn’t even needs to go looking for trouble, trouble finds him, even in vacation, because, this time Nick was on vacation (a very well deserved one, as you surely know if you have read the previous book “Fangs & Metal”), as his partner summoned him to a crime scene opening a cane of worm that eventually will send Nick stumbling down back to his sire (Brick), looking for information about the whereabouts of Dimitry Yi, the well-known anti-vampire extremist, whose disappearance has put his followers on a frenzy, that translates on bodies dropping down on the street marked with Yi’s symbols and attacks on vampire neighborhoods and governmental institutions.
And the worst part… Nick is being personally targeted, and the best way to pressure him, is to aim for his girlfriend, because as aforementioned there is nothing Nick wouldn’t do to protect her. Nick Tanaka is a wonderful character, a real hero in the Japanese way, the one who does what must be done, and needs no other reason: And the one who is destined to fail and tries nevertheless; and becomes the hero, no because he wins, but as result of his own failures and his resolve to try nevertheless.
JC Andrijeski has an uncanny ability to create whole new worlds, alien and familiar at the same time, which she then populates with captivating, interesting and relatable characters. With a fluid, fast paced, vivid and always delightful writing style, she excels in getting across the action elements without disregarding the more subtle romantic aspects of the story, making Tanaka into possible one of the most human vampires you would ever come across, as well as one of the characters that have undergo the highest growth since we first meet him in the “Quentin Black Series”. A previous knowledge of the original series is by not means necessary to enjoy the “Vampire Detective Midnight” (VDM) Series, which stands solely on its own. And while Nick Tanaka character keeps evolving through the VDM series, and an acquaintance with at least the previous book (“Fangs and Metal”) can be helpful to understand his path, “The White Death” can nevertheless enjoyed as an entry to the series, and I say ‘entry’ because… it would not stop there, be warned once you get to know Tanaka, you can’t ever have enough 😉.
Last but not least, please bear in mind that “Quentin Black” and “Vampire Detective Midnight” are both wonderful series intended for mature readers that appreciate multidimensional characters and new perspectives.
NYPD homicide vampire detective Nick Tanaka will do anything to keep his mate Wynter James safe and that would include selling his soul to his sire Brick and his dark underground group of vampires called the White Death. Especially when Dimitry Yi (the anti-vampire extremist) who has been missing for weeks (but is actually imprisoned) together with his followers are threatening her. Riots are starting to break out thanks to Yi's followers in vampire neighbourhoods and bombs are going off in buildings there. It seems that they want their leader back and are not going to stop unless they get him back. Now they are also targeting Nick partially due to his fame as a cage fighter but more likely due to his role as a Midnight. So he decides he needs to look to his own kind for help even if that means he is indebted to his sire and his own agenda.
OMG - if I could give this 10 stars I would. My mind is totally blown and so buckle up and prepare for a fast-paced ride full of bombshells and a-ha moments. So much is finally clear and yet so much is still unresolved. It was well written and very easy to read and understand. Contains some explicit sexual content but not much. I just can't wait to find out what happens next.
What the…?! I think that’s the only clear thought I have left at the end of this book. “What?” This story goes places, reveals secrets, and suggests theories that I was in no way prepared for. You don’t have to have read either of the series that run in tandem with Nick’s, but there are so many layers of meaning and connection that it’s a much richer experience when you have knowledge of Black’s and the Bridge & Sword worlds. I am in awe of the growth that Nick and his inner circle have gone through to get to where they are by the end of this book. It hurt my heart to see what they’re asked to face while getting there, but it makes them a stronger, more cohesive team. That jaw-dropping ending makes me wish the next book in the series was already available. I have no idea what kind of trouble Nick will find himself in next, but I’m dying to find out. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.
Vampires, fated mates romance, race warfare (so what if the sides are vampires and non-vampires), radical hatred, sacrifices, a thrilling roller coaster of a sci-fi / detective mashup. Oh yes indeed, JC Andrijeski’s The White Death (Vampire Detective Midnight, Book 5) has it all - and it’s all perfectly written with a fantastically built world filled with superb characters, not only the leads, Nick, and his gal Wynter, but the cast in general (special note to the wonderfully complex Brick). Really amazing that not only is the tempo kept up this deep into the series but it actually astoundingly gets better and better from what already deserved five stars. It sure make it very easy though, to highly recommend.
I was happy just to hear from Nick again! And what do I get? A story that reminds me of old times in its tempo, its intensity, of the battles Allie and Revik fought, and then Miri and Black. Breathtaking in its attention to detail, the escalation of suspense that made me want to speed-read. Revelations of all kinds; sad, heartbreakingly beautiful and frightening ones, allowing glimpses into a future that could include many worlds. And at the end, ... no, NO, this cannot be all! I need more! Fast, now!
An absolutely outstanding book that features Nic once again. Even though he’s a vampire, he’s helping the police. He now has a mate to take care of. Plenty of action to keep you hooked. Loved everything about the book.
This review is of The White Death by JC Andrijeski. I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Note: this review contains spoilers! Also note: if you haven’t read the previous book, Fang and Metal, you really need to stop reading this and go read that. Too many things carried over from that book. How do you review a book when you have known the characters, or at least 2 of them for so long long? Nick was a cop in the Quentin Black books way before the war, way before the vampires, humans, and seerers tried to destroy earth. And Brick has been Brick for even longer than that. Do I tell you about the attack on the apartment that I started reading so fast I was missing words because the action was that fast? Or the airplane, yes I said airplane, crashing into the acid ocean with Nick and all of his friends on board? Or at the very end when. . . Nope. Not going there. Do I talk about how all of the characters feel like old friends? People I’d like to have lunch with and swap tales? I could see the fires in my mind’s eye as they spread over New York as the fanatics tried to take out the vampires. Yes, this book is all of that and more. Because at the center of this story is the same thing that is the center of our story. There is always one person, one individual who by hook or crook gets too much power and decides that they know what’s best for everyone. And there are always people willing to kill in that person’s name. To do unspeakable things. And it’s up to us to decide just as it was for Nick and the others which side they will be on.

Dimitry Yi is a powerful seer who wants purity on earth. Which means all hybrids, vampires and seers must die. Yi and his loyal followers believe that only humans should inhabit this earth. Even Nick, Brick along with Wynter, Mal, Tai, Kit, Jordan and Morley are unable to stop the madness and chaos that division and hatred has caused. You see, Yi is not your typical seer, he is a telekinetic seer who has the power to destroy worlds.
Archangel and White Death must join forces to combat this viable threat to planet earth. Just when you think Yi is captured and all is well.... BAM! All hell breaks out and nothing that should happen, happens.
In this book, we get more surprising surprises about Wynter and Jem. Also, some unexpected characters are incorporated into the storyline, and I liked it. Lots of action and romance. I'm glad the author is stepping up Wynter and Nick's relationship by referring to them more as a married couple than as boyfriend and girlfriend. After reading each book in this series I'm left with an emptiness caused by incomplete and unanswered questions. This book answered some of the questions but left me with another one and I wonder if I will have to read another series to get those answers. I'm not crazy about crossovers but I'm not going to complain too heavily since this series is a crossover from the very excellently written Quentin Black series. I'm just not sure I want to read the Bridge and Sword series to get the remaining answers.
Overall, this is another action filled, excellently written book in the Vampire Detective series.
Having read all three series dealing with seers, humans and/or vampires, this book was an absolute joy. The number of crossovers, from Easter egg size to full plots, that drew the series' together were surprising and exciting. As always, the characters were winsome and familiar friends, the plot moved quickly, and plenty of opportunities existed to root for your favorite people. The book was excessively exciting for a fan like this reader! Reading the books in the suggested order is the best way to enjoy them as the plot builds and extends and startles along the way. Out of order, one might find them confusing. Greatly satisfying for fantasy and sci-fi lovers alike.
I have read all the Allie and Revik books and a lot more of the books written by the author. This series is a eye opener into the life of Nick and what happens to him after most of his friends left. Falling and becoming the mate of Dalejem. I was so surprised that Wynter is the reincarnation of Dalejem. You will have to read all the books in this series because the connection was there between them when they first met. But as you read this book you will get quite an insight into who and what they are to each other. Now let’s add to the story the whole Dimitry element which has many wondering who his parents are. The book will keep you on the edge of your seat with all the twists and turns but the best parts occur in London. I will not say much other than I did not see it coming but I loved it! This is an excellent series and I think this book is awesome! I fell asleep reading because I could not put the book down! I have no number of stars to assign to this book because it is an eye opener! I hope there is another because I can see many books to this series! Keep writing JC because you have quite a way with the pen! I highly recommend this this series as well as the Black series and Allie and Revik series!
Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2021 Wow. This book had so many twists. It kept me guessing until the end. Things with Dimitry Yi come to a head, White Death is involved. Everything I want to say would be a spoiler. So I’m just going to leave it at this series keeps getting better and better. I loved getting back to Wynter and Nick and everyone.
It had been a while since I had read the previous Black books, so was surprised to see this story loop into Black and Rook territory. Now I’m having to wait for the next Black book to see how all these worlds combine. This story was interesting, but I was not drawn into the characters like had happened in previous books.
As always this series and previous series are complicated and full of twists and turns. The clever ability to link the different series and world is astounding. Nick has always been a favourite character from the Black and Miri days and continues to be. Lots of questions are answered and lots raised so be aware if new to this author and start at the beginning.
JC Andrijeski’s Vampire Detective Midnight Series makes the most sense if you’ve already read the Quentin Black Mystery Series. I like that there is some overlap between the Quentin Black and Bridge and Sword versions of Earth.
This book answers and raises questions about seers, vampires and hybrids with as much action and intrigue as possible.
Family, you can't live with them & you can't live without them. We get a full dose of a family joined by more than blood & a threat that is about wiping that family and one particular race out of existence. The author then blends her world's together, bringing the distant past & near past, to the present and it's a rush. Need to know where she goes next.
OMG I love Nick but he certainly gets himself and his group of broken beings into some confusing and terrifying situations! As always with this author the story is complex and twisted but written so well that you hang on every word! Totally loved it!
The story world continues to evolve in each book. I got hooked on this series in book one where the story world just blew me away. This one has Nick fleeing his New York home by jumping off the roof as the building collapses. I liked this book a lot.
There is absolutely nothing to dislike about this book are any of the previous ones they are phenomenal they're exciting they're sad they're happy there everything all rolled up into one
Yes!! Bring back old friends! Other than the Quentin Black series, this is the best spinoff series from the original. Characters are unique and interesting.
I just finished this book and it is amazing. It pulls you into another version of earth and is jam packed full of action. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Can't wait to see what's next.
I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
