Proposing Mischief

Rate this book
Maisie Kentworth is stuck on the ranch. Having fallen in love with the wrong guy, she can't risk inflaming things between her former beau and her protective family. Left to rue her mistakes, she keeps busy exploring the idle mine at the edge of their property.

Boone Bragg is also stuck. With his parents on vacation, the management of Bragg Mining falls on him, and one of his advisors wants him as a son-in-law. One wrong move, and Boone will end up either offending an associate or getting married to a woman he can't endure.

While closing up a spent mine, Boone gets two surprises. One is an untamed farm girl who's trespassing with a pickax, and the other is the amazing crystal cavern that she's discovered. Suddenly Boone sees a way to overhaul the family business. With part of the cavern on Kentworth land, Boone makes Maisie a proposal that he hopes will solve all of their problems. Instead it throws Joplin into chaos.

For never having visited Joplin,MO the author has now made me want to do it. I love to visit places that I think sound fascinating that I've read about in books.
I am sure there are a lot of interesting things to see but what I am interested in is hearing more about the history of the crystal caverns underneath a part of the city. I got this fascinating information from the note in the back of the book.
Now our girl Maisie Kentworth, love her, she is a girl after my own heart. After a disastrous romance her parents force her to stay on the ranch for her own safety. Bored out of her skull she tries to think of a way out of it. Exploring one day she finds an incredible find in an abandoned mining cave and has to tell the man she meets in the cave. Now this just happens to be the mine owner going in to see who has broken into his boarded up cave and he's checking on their safety, that's when he meets Maisie.
Now Maisie is the kind of girl who isn't exactly looking for trouble it just seems to find her. I absolutely love the author's sense of humor in this book, Maisie has to be by favorite character she's ever written about, from an on fire dress to an accidental kick in the face to a marriage of convenience to arm wrestling matches Boone has met his match in Maisie. Is Boone's family and the town of Joplin ready for spitfire Maisie when she'd rather be mucking in the garden digging potatoes than attending board meetings and fancied up with the ladies?
You are going to love this book! Quick read, I just couldn't put it down!

Maisie is the most individual heroine I've read in a while. On the surface, she seems completely mismatched with Boone, the hero. Yet both need each other to achieve a certain level of freedom. The plot is charming, with great supporting characters and enough hints of mystery to add spice to the historical romance. I enjoyed this book so much! If you love historical romance with humor and threads of mystery, then this is a book you'll want to read.

Just the chuckle I needed!
“She thought she could sneak away from the consequences of her actions for just half an hour, but consequences and bad decisions were not finished with her.”
Farm girl Maisie is cute as a button and can do most anything including get into trouble. After choosing the wrong beaux, she realizes his character and is forced by her family to keep out of his way. But she feels cooped up on the farm. Out fixing fences near a mine, she gets snoopy and removes boards from a nailed up entrance to a mine shaft to go exploring. Not only does she find a beautiful hidden cave, she finds the owner, Bragg Boone. They both marvel at God’s handiwork and agree that this discovery must be shared. Boone asks her to strike a deal to help him save his failing mine. A marriage of convenience for these two Christians makes for some interesting interactions. Lots of funny scenes, especially when Maisie and Boone play such games as hide the crystal, arm wrestling or walk on stilts. They grow closer and Boone has found in Maisie: “A rich treasure hidden beneath a rough surface. He was growing fonder of that type of treasure day by day.”
Funny and heartwarming, the mischief was refreshing and an all around good time.

1890s Joplin, Missouri

Fun! Maisie Kentworth is confined to her house by her parents after a poor choice in a prior suitor. With her sense of adventure, this doesn't go over well with her. At all. As she's looking for entertainment on the family property, she just happens to wander into a boarded up mine. What could go wrong?

Bachelor Boone Bragg is weary of single women and parents of single women clamoring for his attention. He's focused on the family mines and has zero interest in romance.

As expected from a Jennings novel, there are wonderful characters and a story line that includes historical detail and humor.

Proposing Mischief is such a fun story! To me, it read like a historical romcom and brimmed with laugh-out-loud moments. Not only does this story highlight the author’s humor, but also Regina Jennings’ love for historical detail. And can I just say how much I loved Maisie? Her character is so delightful. I adore spunky, adventurous heroines. Toss in a sweet romance and you have a fabulous book not to be missed.

Another delightful book in this series! Such a treat to read. Maisie's character was so loveable and enduring, so down to earth and fun. Boone was a bit stun when it came to matters of the heart but made up for it later!... Wonderful spiritual elements shared here n there which was encouraging instead of depressing as some books can be. I learned more about Joplin, Missouri yet again and looked up those Crystal Caves that did exist, the historic Murphysberg district and more. Always great to find out new tidbits:) Will keep her on my don't mind reading at all type list of authors!

Proposing Mischief is a fun marriage of convenience story. It is the second full length novel in the Joplin Chronicles series, yet it can easily be read as a stand alone novel. The humor is really fun in this story, yet the characters’ hearts shine through, as well.

Even though Maisie is a strong character, she carries around a lot of self doubt related to the bad decision she made in giving her heart to an unscrupulous man. Boone is focused on his business endeavors and is constantly escaping the machinations of matchmaking mothers who are trying to trap him into marriage with their daughters. When Boone gets the idea for a marriage of convenience with Maisie, it seems all problems might be solved. Of course it is never so simple!

These two characters actually get on quite well once they relax and spend a bit of time together away from prying eyes. However, they seem to make mistake after mistake out in public, where they are supposed to look as if they are wildly in love. There are so many uncomfortable and awkward moments that they must work through!

This is a very clean marriage of convenience story that could easily be shared with a teen reader. The author did a great job of providing information about the crystal cave that Maisie discovered and making me feel as if I was getting a peek at this amazing sight.

My Thoughts:
This was the perfect read to kick off the new year. I absolutely loved Proposing Mischief. It was light, funny, adventurous, romantic, and educational.
We met Maisie in the previous book, so I was thrilled to read her story and get to know her even better. She’s such a fun character, and this was a fish out of water type of story.
By the end of the book, I was mesmerized by the crystal cave they found and wish it was possible to go visit it in person.
The spiritual thread was solid and a blessing to me.
And I adored the playful interactions between Maisie and Boone. In ways, they reminded me of me and my husband.

Rating and Recommendations: I’m giving Proposing Mischief 5 stars. I recommend it to those looking for Christian Historical Romance, Christian Western Romance or a marriage of convenience story.

Maisie Kentworth and Boone Bragg think that marrying each other is a way to solve their problems, but theirs will be a marriage of convenience, with no romance involved. Famous last words, right? What follows is a funny, laugh-out-loud story of two very unusual people who enter a business arrangement, proceed to being friends, and then, start to feel so much more! Along the way, they experience all kinds of mishaps, and I couldn't wait to see what was next for this unconventional pair!

Unforgettable characters, exciting adventure, and a sweet romance just waiting to happen...all of these make Proposing Mischief a book that I couldn't put down. Author Regina Jennings also shares a history lesson about the real Crystal Cave, a crystal-lined geode cave that was a popular tourist attraction from 1908-1930, and is still lying under the streets of Joplin, Missouri!

This is the second book in The Joplin Chronicles series, and I can't wait to see what comes next. Jennings never fails to entertain, she always adds a powerful faith message, and she excels in writing romance! I highly recommend Proposing Mischief to all who enjoy historical Christian fiction.

I LOVED this book! And I have to say it is one of my favorite releases in 2021!! Once you start Proposing Mischief, it is very hard to put down. Maisie Kentworth is such a unique leading lady. She and her hero, Boone, create an absolutely endearing power couple. Such a delightfully sweet romance with an entertaining plot that has you turning the pages and thinking about the book while not reading. A must-read for sure!

Note: I did not read Book Two in order of The Joplin Chronicles, but I don’t feel like you have to start with Book One in order to enjoy Proposing Mischief.

“Courage was for hanging in there, even knowing how tough it might get.”

Maisie is one unforgettable character and the author creates such a fun and boisterous atmosphere to fit her heroine. Maisie is a study in contradictions - full of sass and boldness yet completely naive in the ways of society, uncouth and rough around the edges yet sweet and tender. She’s definitely unexpected for the mine owner Boone who is clueless, obtuse, and awkward in relationships and dealing with emotions. They start out with hang-ups about romance so it’s extra fun to watch them stumble and bumble their way around each other in a marriage of convenience. If you enjoy historical romcom, this book definitely fits the bill.

It’s the second book from the series but can be read as a stand alone. If you’ve already met Calista in the first book, then you’d be happy with the updates on how she is doing with her Matthew.

I received the book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.

Regina Jennings knows how to craft a story that not only makes you laugh, but also tugs at your heart. Her latest, Proposing Mischief, book 2 in her Joplin Chronicles, is a journey into craziness that will quickly capture your imagination.

Here, we again encounter the … unique… Kentworth family in the character of Maisie. This unrefined, bulldozer of a woman manages to not only win over the novel’s hero Boone, but also worms her way into my affections. I loved how Jennings created this loveable hillbilly who teaches us that being ourselves, enjoying life to its fullest, and truly caring about others is the best way to live.

A beautiful romance with a touch of mystery and a heavy dose of fun, this was an absolute delight to read! I cannot wait to read book 3!

Maisie Kentworth made a mistake, and the consequences just might kill her. Her overprotective family won’t let her go to town alone, and they’ve conspired together to keep her from having any adventures. While she doesn’t rightly trust herself after falling for a scoundrel with no morals, she wishes her kin would allow her a little diversion. After all, she’s a grown woman.

When she ventures onto the neighbor’s property one day, she decides to create her own adventure. And ends up discovering a great treasure in an abandoned mineshaft. When she runs out of the shaft to share her discovery, she smacks plumb into a man. A man she’s never met before. Not what her family had in mind when they sent her out to fix a fence.

Boone Bragg has a lot of problems. Most of them wear skirts and try to finagle an invitation from him for a brunch or an engagement. He has no interest in the empty-headed shenanigans of society women hunting for husbands. Keeping his mines operating and his miners employed weighs heavily on his mind. On the verge of selling one of his mines, he decides to look around one last time.

Boone never expects to find a crazy woman inside his mine shouting about her amazing discovery. Once he realizes she has no intentions of compromising him, he follows her back down the mineshaft. What he sees will change the course of his life.

What I Loved About This Book

Maisie Kentworth and the Kentworth clan remind me of the Sacketts from Louis L’Amour’s westerns—a series I read repeatedly. Maisie, while not refined and ladylike like some of her other cousins, has a charm of her own. She sprinkles her speech with down-home phrases, doesn’t shy from the truth, and knows her weaknesses.

Jennings has found the perfect match for Boone Brag—an upright man with no plans to marry, and Maisie—a wounded woman who wants people to accept her as she is. Readers will laugh, get carried away, and find themselves wondering which member of the Kentworth clan will make an appearance in Jennings’ next book. Maisie first appeared in Courting Misfortune, the first book in the Joplin Chronicles. Readers can enjoy either book as a standalone novel—but why not read them both?

Fans of Jen Turano and Karen Witemeyer will enjoy Proposing Mischief.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fun read that took me to Joplin, Missouri, back when mining was a big part of the city. The characters were so lovable and fun. They kept me turning the pages. The heroine and her family cracked me up. Oh my!! And marriage of convenience too. That is my favorite trope. I hope each of these lovable family members get their own book.
If you are looking for a fun, clean adventurous romance, then I think you would enjoy this book very much. I know I did.

Regina Jennings’ books are just fun, and Proposing Mischief is proof of that.

In order to solve their personal and business problems, Maisie Kentworth and Boone Bragg come up with a solution or both of them: a marriage of convenience. But these two come from two different worlds, can they find a compromise and find happily ever after together?

I just loved Maisie in this book. She’s a spitfire in so many ways, but when it comes to men, she’s a little clueless. Not that Boone’s any better when it comes to women. As these two work and live together, a friendship forms and then comes more. Theirs is a slow forming appreciation and attraction that proves that love is so much more than appearance, wealth, or social standing.

Wow! What a fun stinking story! I enjoyed the first book in this series, but I REALLY enjoyed the second installment!

We meet Maisie again, who was getting into mischief in book one with Silas, who turned out to be a snake. But oh my gosh, her story was a hoot! I found myself laughing out loud numerous times in the story. Regina really pulls out all of the stops with Maisie and Boone's dialogue. Even with Maisie's way of thinking you'll get a chuckle.

Maisie meets Boone in a way that only she could conjure up. I have to admit, I'm prone to really enjoying the female protagonists when they're a bit out of the ordinary. If they're quirky, rough around the edges, and a bit rugged, I tend to lean towards liking them. Well, Maisie had all of that, and more, in spades. She's absolutely a force to be reckoned with.

Then there's Boone. He's avoiding all of the women (and their mothers) who have set their sights on him for matrimony. Maisie, yea, she does NOT look at Boone that way. She just wants freedom and the chance to explore. Boone is a bit quirky himself. That being said, he's a smart business man with a good head on his shoulders. He's not so great at relationships.

Together they come up with an ingenious plan, but nothing ever seems to come easy for poor Maisie. I thoroughly enjoyed how Boone stood up for Maisie and they tried to talk things out when there was a misunderstanding. Sometimes it took a while, but I truly appreciate it when characters aren't acting ridiculous. lol Of course, there are highfalutin characters who not only tried my patience, but Maisie and Boone's as well. There was also a bit of mystery around who might be trying to stop the wonderful "find" from being seen by the world.

I have to also say that I absolutely loved the way the author incorporated God into the story and his majesty being seen through the treasure Maisie finds. It's clear Maisie and Boone know the Lord and His word. They want their treasure to proclaim His wonder! Don't you just love that?

This story is just plain fun!

I enjoyed Maisie in the first book in the series, so I knew I would enjoy this book. I certainly wasn’t expecting all the crazy twists and turns in it and I wasn’t expecting to love Boone so much either. He isn’t the sort of man I would have imagined best for her, but they are honestly perfect together—and it of course is evident to neither of them even though they enter a marriage of convenience!

There’s a solid bit of suspense with the question of who is trying to get their hands on the mine, or who is trying to keep them out of it. There may be more rich crystals to be found in the played-out mine, but the flooding issue keeps it out of reach...and things keep happening to the pumps.

A great read. I can’t wait to read the next in the series!

Maisie Kentworth needs adventure like she needs air. It's not her fault if trouble happens to follow her, is it? Well, perhaps it is slightly her fault. She made mistakes while she was sweet on Silas Marsh, but that doesn't mean he should hound her and her kin trying to stir up more trouble for the Kentworths.

On one of her explorations, Maisie stumbles into a crystal-lined cave in a nearly-abandoned mine. Then she stumbles into the mine owner.

Boone Bragg had almost decided to sell the mine, but the discovery of this giant geode has reshaped his plans and goals. Instead of mining for minerals, they could turn Crystal Cave into a tourist attraction. Surely people would come from all over to see the beauty that has been hidden away for centuries. "All the electric lights in the world can't compete with what God made and hid beneath our feet," Boone says in Chapter 14.

But Boone has a problem. Could it be that his problem—and hers as well—could be solved by an unconventional arrangement?

This book is a hoot! Maisie and Boone are unique and distinct characters that you'll remember after you turn the last page. I love that this story took a slice of real history and breathed life into something most have forgotten or never knew about. If you want to know more, check out Proposing Mischief for yourself. Remember to read only in places where you don't mind laughing out loud!

"How dare you get married! What made you think you could do such a thing?"

And . . . . . that was exactly why Boone Bragg had married the freckled cave expedition-er; to escape the clutches of women like Justina Caine. He and Maise had made an air-tight agreement, even made it under the Promise Tree, that there would be no romance involved, just a straight up business deal . . . . until death do them part. . . . . . or at least until their cave filled with crystals opened up to the public.

Maise Kentworth had just made either the best, or the worst, decision of her life; she'd gotten married to the most eligible bachelor in all of Joplin, Missouri. One thing was certain, she had gained her freedom and saved her brother from prison,(maybe that was overstating things a bit, but for the time being it was the honest truth). Now, how to traverse around all the land mines sprinkled throughout polite society for you see, her reputation was already a bit tainted. Maise knew how to build fences and rope cows, but handling uppity females? Clueless. Or at least in ways that didn't get somebody hurt.

Maise and Boone's journey towards friendship and eventually romance is sprinkled with generous doses of hurt feelings and side-splitting humor, making the story quite entertaining, for even Boone admits early on that, "she was fire and light bound up in a freckled mess". He just didn't expect that "mess" to clean up into such a breathtaking beauty . . . . (tell me, what man doesn't recognize his own wife?)

Enjoy this mischievous addition to "The Joplin Chronicles".

Have you ever heard of a Crystal Cave? Proposing Mischief by Regina Jennings is a wonderful story about a crystal cavern found in Joplin MO.

Masie Kentworth is pretty much a prisoner of her parents' home. After being led astray by the wrong man, she must stay within her parents home or be chaperoned by her protective family. Working on her family's farm, she wanders over to an abandoned mine where she makes an amazing discovery.

Boone Bragg just about gives up on the depleted mine, ready to sell it to Justina's father. Justina has her claws out to get Boone, but he makes a spontaneous decision to marry farm girl Masie. It will solve her problem for freedom, and his to being taken. Things get pretty messy when Masie is introduced to the upper class Boone's family is related to.

Fun, hilarious and somewhat true, as there really was a crystal cave in the late 1800's.  I loved how the romance bloomed as Masie and Boone get to know each other but are restricted by their contract to marrying to protect each other.

Regina Jennings writes her historical novels with a touch of humor to keep the reader engaged. In this second book of her Joplin, Missouri, series, she relates the story of Boone Bragg and Maisie Kentworth. Maisie is quite a handful at best and an absolute calamity waiting to happen at worst. Because of an unfortunate entanglement with an unscrupulous man, Maisie is pretty much exiled to her family ranch in order to stay out of trouble. After fixing a fence one day, she decides to go exploring in the mine that is near her family's land holdings. She breaks into the mine, takes a pickaxe with her, and takes her frustrations out on the mine walls. What she doesn't expect is to find a cavern full of crystals behind the mine. She comes back out to find Boone Bragg at the mouth of the mine and takes him down to see the cavern. That she is trespassing never crosses her mind, she's just exploring.
Boone has problems of his own--as Maisie describes it, single women all over town are covering themselves with flypaper trying to attach themselves to him. He wants nothing to do with them, he wants nothing to do with social climbers, and he wants nothing to do with women in general. When Maisie shows up at his business's board meeting, he sees a way out of his "women dilemma." He offers Maisie a marriage contract. It offers her freedom, and it keeps him out of the marriage market.

This plot is like a train wreck, you know what's going to happen, but you can't look away. The calamities and events that move through the plot are almost constant, like moving from the frying pan, to the fire, and hopping back and forth while trying to stay ahead of the game. (Sorry, I mixed a few metaphors there.) Yes, the book is entertaining, yes, the characters are relatable, and by gum, the settings are unbelievably magnificent. Many of the characters are the same ones that populated the first book in this series, Courting Misfortune, and play pivotal roles in this offering. Four stars.

In Proposing Mischief, spunky and spirited Maisie Kentworth gets paired up with bookish and introverted Boone in a marriage of convenience story that makes you laugh out loud until the very end. Maisie is up to her normal antics with her outspoken and unconventional family, and boy do they get into some mischief! This story does make us love Maisie more as a heroine, since the first book in the Joplin Chronicles series did not show us her most rational and endearing side. The story is actually a bit goofy, but in an adorable and entertaining way that makes for fun, light-hearted reading. I love how Regina Jennings used true history from her hometown of Joplin to make a plotline that is unusual but believable! Who would have thought there was a real crystal cavern that was converted into a tourist attraction at the turn of the century? Only real-life could inspire such a unique plotline, but Regina Jennings took that interesting history and threw in some complex yet lovable characters to create her own wonderful narrative. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a light read with an entertaining cast of characters, and I cannot wait to see what happens next to the Kenworth family of Joplin!

This was such a fun book! I loved Maisie and the way she always stayed true to herself, and I loved Boone for loving her just the way she is. I was also glad to see a little bit of Calista and their whole clan again. And I loved how they all worked together using their own individual gifts and talents.

This verse wasn't referenced at all in the book, but it made me think of 1 Corinthians 1:27‭-‬29,
"Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God." (NLT)

This is entertaining, fast-paced, sweet read!

This was a fun one! I laughed out loud multiple times while reading/listening to this story. Maisie is a HOOT and the scrapes she inevitably finds her self in make for some hilarious scenes. Boone is a great match for her even with the misunderstandings and mistakes he makes along the way. The mystery element to the story is fun and the ending scenes are a entertaining end to the story. Really, really enjoyed this book!

This is a delightful story. I loved learning about the Crystal Cave, particularly experiencing it through the eyes of these fun characters. I listened to Proposing Mischief on audiobook while on a road trip, and boy did the miles fly by! It's great to see a female heroine who isn't written as an overly perfect ideal and a hero that loves her just the way she is.
