Brielle Durand is a key defender and hunter for her people's peace-loving French settlement in the Canadian mountains. When a foreigner wanders too near to their secret homes, she has no choice but to disarm and capture him. She won't allow another massacre like the one that killed her mother a dozen years before. But now, what to do with this man who looks at her in a strange way?
Evan MacManus was on assignment to find among the caves the mineral pitchblende that might help America win the War of 1812. Despite being taken prisoner, Evan is determined to complete his mission. But when that assignment becomes at odds with his growing appreciation of the villagers and Brielle, does he follow through on the promise he's made to his government or take a risk on the path his heart tells him is right? Either choice will spell death for someone.

This book begins a new series and the premise is quite intriguing--a settlement of peaceful people living in hidden caves in the depths of the mountains. Then a stranger wanders in.
It was exciting to learn of these folks and how they'd been hidden away for so very long. And the story was rich. I look forward to more in this series.
My thanks to Bethany House for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinion here is my own.
A WARRIOR'S HEART is a good representation of this author's writing where readers find themselves engaged in a story set in a rugged land with likable characters who face challenges and danger while trying not to fall in love. Fans of the author and genre will enjoy this newest for Beller!
I felt like this story read slightly different from this author's other books and this was a good thing. Some of the others started to feel too similar after reading quite a few of them. This one includes characters who are easy to love, a rugged landscape, danger, family dynamics, a spiritual message and romance as I've come to expect from this author. However, this story also felt fresh. Maybe because Brielle isn't from an Native American tribe or a white woman trying to reach a destination or fend for herself. No, Brielle is a fierce warrior trying to protect her people who have a little French settlement in the mountains. The hero, Evan, is also a strong man and a soldier in his own right. They are very well matched each with things in their past that they must work through in order to find their happily-ever-after. I also really enjoyed the touch of humor and contrast between Brielle and other characters. And, of course, the author gives these two plenty of challenges and a bit of danger to make things interesting. The ending is a bit predictable, but I expected it would be and it's why I enjoy stories like this as I get the sweet ending I'm looking for.
In the end, was it what I wished for? An overall enjoyable story with all the things I expect from this author and genre. Definitely a good book to escape into and be left in the end inspired and content from the happily-ever-after conclusion. I'm looking forward to the next book with characters from this settlement.
Content: Some violence, but clean. Source: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through Celebrate Lit, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.
A Warrior’s Heart was a unique and intriguing tale. It was so interesting to see how this community lived, set apart and hidden for so long. I appreciated the way Brielle and Evan got to know each other as he was held prisoner. Their interactions made a lot of sense. Both of these characters were upstanding people. Brielle was extremely protective of her village and was also a caregiver to her family and friends, working to provide them with food and comfort when they were going through difficult situations.
We learn about Evan’s background and his mission throughout the story. The fact that keeping his mission secret from Brielle and the village weighed on his heart spoke volumes about the kind of man he was. Evan’s faith grew from this trial and he realized that he had to hand everything over to God in one part of the story and rely on prayer and trust in God alone and that he had not been doing that before.
Evan and Brielle made a wonderful romantic pair by the end of the book and I am hopeful that we will see more of them in the future.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is a great new-to-me author. Her style is easy to follow and well crafted. The spiritual inspiration and truths flow well with the plot. The characters are good but I didn't really connect. I am really into book's settings. It's a huge part of the reading experience. Laurent, the French settlement, made me a bit claustrophobic. A good portion of this story takes place in the storage room where the hero, Evan is being held prisoner. And don't hate me but I'm not a big fan of women warriors fighting men. But these reasons are more of personal taste. I'm rounding my 31/5 stars up to 4. I do plan to read book 2 this month!
Cool setting- secret people living in a cave system. Strong, determined female lead. Good set up for future stories and characters. I liked this book. Content: This book is a bit heavier on the Christian elements. Kissing, mild peril, mild violence.
Brielle Durand had never known another way of life but the small French colony in Canada where she spent her entire life. Strangers to their village meant danger, a danger she experienced first hand.
Evan MacManus was a wandering explorer, but to her he was an invader, a threat she needed to eliminate. Bringing him back to her village injured from her arrow meant his life was about to be altered.
This was such a fascinating story. Very different. The village had no news of the outside world and didn’t particularly want any. They had survived generations without the world quite well.
I loved the faith element woven throughout. Prayer, trusting God, biblical principles and asking for guidance were often brought into the book. Lovely. And the romance was gentle, clean and so sweet.
This book kept my interest all day and one I can recommend.
A secret French settlement in the Canadian mountains – hidden from the world & carefully guarded. A courageous heroine who valiantly protects her people. A Scottish-American hero who can lapse into the brogue of his ancestors upon request (swoon!). I really could stop right there and most of you will be adding it to your shopping cart, am I right?
A Warrior’s Heart kicks off a new historical romance series by Misty M. Beller, and I am so intrigued by this cave-dwelling settlement of Laurent. The people are protected from the dangers of the outside world, yes, but in exchange they are also incredibly sheltered from the progress & knowledge of the same world. This lends their sequestered mountain village an almost magically innocent quality – a sort of Brigadoon, if you will, that stays put. Yet Evan’s mission for the US Army stands in direct opposition to Brielle’s need to protect her people & their way of life. The residents of Laurent (for the most part) are goodhearted and genuine, and I loved seeing them through Evan’s eyes while he is held prisoner. I also enjoyed seeing Evan & his world from Brielle’s perspective, peering over her shoulder as she tries to decide whether he will be friend or foe … or something more. And the kisses. I loved the kisses. (I’m sure you’re all shocked!)
The emphasis on the divine power of prayer – juxtaposed against the human need to be in control, to know the outcome – really touched my heart. In fact, the scene(s) where the only thing a certain character can do is pray brought a few tears to my eyes. That internal battle is one I’m familiar with, though our circumstances are certainly different, and the reminder that fervent & focused prayer isn’t a last resort but the best option is so timely for all we are struggling with in our current world. Beller does a fabulous job of seamlessly integrating these spiritual truths into the framework of the story, without sacrificing the flow of the narrative or weakening the personality of the characters. Rather, it makes the story all the stronger, the romance all the sweeter, and the message all the more sincere.
Bottom Line: A Warrior’s Heart is another gorgeously-rendered novel from Misty M. Beller. You will be intrigued from the very beginning, quickly invested in these characters & their story, as the vividly drawn setting wraps around your senses. The emotional tension between the characters, their seemingly opposing purposes, and even their own internal conflicts keeps the romantic tension high as well (not to mention some extra swooniness to their kisses), and it lays a solid foundation for the truth that Beller weaves naturally through the pages. I cannot wait to see what’s in store for book 2!

3.5 stars "Another ten paces and she'd have to shoot. . . . . Five more strides . . . She'd done what she must do to protect her people."
Getting shot in his mid-section with an arrow by a she-warrior wasn't exactly the most pleasant of introductions, but Evan MacManus was thankful to be alive, even if he was lying helplessly on the cold floor of a cave-like dungeon battling a befuddled, pain-riddled brain. "From where do you hail, monsieur", she dared to ask; what a loaded question. Evan's mission deep within the borders of the Canadian Rockies was one that he was sworn to protect; for his countrymen depended on his ability to keep a secret.
He was an outsider, and outsiders were dangerous. Based on past experience, the cave dwellers were necessarily wary of strangers, and this man had wandered into their territory uninvited and unannounced. The question remained, what to do with him? The Laurent council would decide of course, but as Brielle Durand spends time with Evan serving as one of his guards, she begins to unravel his motives, a man whom she is certain is telling portions of the truth, rather than the whole of it.
Never have conversations in a cave been more entertaining! And promising! And a call to prayer; for Evan and Brielle are destined to learn that some things are best left up to God Himself to figure out, for "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." What a nice beginning to a new series, by a very talented story-teller.
I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. The thoughts and opinions stated above are entirely my own.
I absolutely love the premise that a community of people lived and thrived in the northern Canadian wilderness separately from the rest of society. It was fascinating to see real history woven with the author's worldbuilding. The details of the people of Laurent and their history added to the intrigue and adventure. Brielle is the leader of the hunters and has honed skills that provide and protect, but her tough persona is balanced by intuition and thoughtful consideration, especially when she comes to know Evan over time. I liked how she could sense that he was withholding from her, even as she grew to admire him. As always there is a strong faith element as Evan and Brielle come to terms with their pasts and the loyalties they hold. The romance that develops between them despite their roles feels genuine and I enjoyed their chemistry. A strong cast of family and community members brought a foundation that will last through the series.

A balanced blend of American history, family background, and Christian romance.
A Warrior's Heart is the first book in Author Misty M. Beller's Brides of Laurent series, and I'm excited to see what she has in store for us with her future books. A prolific writer of American history, Beller brings the Western and Frontier world to you in a thoughtful, character driven story. This new tale is part of one of her five different series, and I highly recommend you read her books if you love Christian Historical fiction.
We meet Brielle Durand on the hunt. She's tracking an interloper across the outskirts of her settlement which is hidden in the caves of the Canadian Rockies. As a leader of her people, she will never forget the tragedy which struck her secret village over twelve years before. A massacre killed several including her own mother. A peaceful encampment, Brielle is determined to never let outsiders into her home again.
Evan MacManus doesn't realize he's about to become the prey. His mission is to find an explosive material in the Northern mountains. This incendiary element is supposed to be within the mountains according to the descriptions and directions provided by an old trapper's diary. He needs the material to help bring an end to the War of 1812. A war that has brought him immense loss and grief.
During the telling of each story, our main characters inner turmoil and dialogue assists in developing their burgeoning relationship. Brielle wants to trust Evan, but the wounds of her past are still fresh, and she isn't sure she's ready to believe her instincts about him. Evan struggles to tell the truth, but not the whole truth, of why he was traveling so near their encampment. He didn't even realize it was there, and he knows there's a chance their home could be the location he needs. Brielle is a courageous and valiant female character, and Evan is a unflinching and forgiving male character whose personal growth and mutual respect heighten over time.
With secrets between the two, the bitter past, and conflict rising in the settlement, readers are treated to the characters' experiences and adventures. As they reveal their truths, both develop a deeper friendship. Neither want their fears and doubts to plague their growing trust and deepening feelings for each other. However, the antagonism of one of Laurent's people forces Brielle and Evan to make choices they hope they don't regret.
A Warrior's Heart is an inspiring and uplifting read about second chances, the strength of community, integrity, and faith. Brielle and Evan are a thoughtful couple who show how prayer and compassion can help heal scarred hearts, and how the Lord brings all things together for the good of His creation. Author Misty M. Beller gives readers sweet, meaningful encounters between the main characters and secondary characters as well as the depth of family within Laurent. It had me wishing there was even more background to all of the secondary characters who I came to love.
A stirring, memorable story that readers will love. The 19th Century is brought to life once more in this newest novel about the American West, and it sheds light on the compassion, sensitivity, and humanity each character's life brings to the story. I loved it - with a 4/5 rating, and I encourage you to pick up your copy today!
Thanks to Bethany House Publishers, Netgalley, and the author for an ARC copy to read and review!
Who doesn’t like good suspense but also romance novels? What about a hidden village? A girl with a past that haunts her and a future that’s uncertain?
I loved this book. It’s the start of a new series by an author I love. Basically, if she has a new book out I read it, and then if it’s a hard copy I share it with a friend or two. I also recommend her books to anyone and everyone. They’re not suspenseful to a point that people who don’t like suspense won’t want to read them. Also, though they’re romance they’re not the smushy mushy romance that can make you nauseated.
Ready for an all-around good read that will keep you reading until the last word and wanting more? This is definitely one of those. I can’t wait for the next book in the series to come out so I can enjoy it as well.
I love that the female lead character is also a heroine. She’s in charge of her village and the head of their army of sorts. She protects them and runs the show. But what happens when she catches a trespasser who she’s not sure what to do with once she has him? And thus the story begins. Can he help her get over her mother’s death? Can he maybe also capture her heart?

I loved so much about this book. I loved every single page of this story.
It’s about a community that has lived for generations hidden away inside of caves in a mountain. When an outsider enters the scene, everything changes. Although he has the ability to impact them, they end up impacting him. I found this to be more than historical fiction and romance, but suspenseful with a survival feel.
I really enjoyed how this story incorporated the entire community and was in such a unique setting. This was my first book by this author and the writing style was so engaging and I really felt like I was inside this story.
The faith based element was beautifully written in. I loved how it was incorporated. The romance was a little steamy. But nothing graphic. Also, no gore or violence. So glad it’s a series because I’m definitely wanting more!
French settlement. Hidden caves. Canadian Rockies. All the words conjure up a life on the edge of civilization. A well-kept secret with the potential of explosion when faced with the volatile maneuverings of the rest of the world. Add 1814, an American government man, and a war to the equation, and one cannot help but wonder if the outcome could ever be a positive one.
Once again Misty Beller has created a world based on historic truisms with vibrant characters in a time of upheaval. A question of values and beliefs. A remembrance of past wrongs replaced by possible hopes and refurbished dreams. Wander the mountain trails and experience a fresh look at history as she presents her tale of longing for peace and hope.
An adventure worth experiencing. This book takes you to the Canadian mountains and to a hidden village nestled away from the rest of the world. Enter one Lady Warrior and an American explorer and sparks start to fly. I love strong heroines, and Brielle is one of the best. Beautifully written with a heart-stirring romance.
An interesting plot. From the very beginning I was intrigued. Can a man fall in love with a woman who shot him with a bow and arrow! Evan finds himself captive in a secret settlement in hidden caves in the Canadian Rockies. Brielle is a strong woman determined to protect those she loves. An enjoyable read.
I really enjoyed the unique setting and premise of this historical fiction! Brielle was a strong main character with a great character arc. The middle of the book dragged a little for me as there were some plot elements that took too long to come about, but the ending was perfect and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
My first Misty M. Beller, I liked the storyline and I'm interested to see how the story continues in the next book. Unfortunately though for me the romance happened a little too quick for me.
Brielle is a Warrior for her tribe in Canada, when she comes across a foreigner who she thinks might be there to hurt her people. So she brings him back to camp as her Prisoner.
A Warrior's Heart is an amazing story of a village that is hidden away in the Canadian wilderness and the people that live there and have for several generations.
Brielle is the leader of the hunters and protectors of Laurent and when she sees a man coming toward their hidden village she takes action to protect the people she loves. She has no idea what is in store for her but her world is about to change.
Evan is traveling deep into the Canadian Rockies in search of pitchblende. It is a mineral that he and others hope with help the Americans win the war with England. This mineral could save thousands of lives and he is on a secret mission to find it.
This is a great story and beginning for Brielle and Evan. There is danger, mistrust, evil, kindness, and so much more. The characters are all well thought out and interesting. I was quickly wrapped up in the lives of these people and wanted more. I love how this author shows us the strength that women from this era possessed. Brielle is a strong woman that has earned her place as leader of the warriors in her group but she also has a heart and wants to be loved as well. I also loved that she shows Evan as a strong man who is dedicated to his mission but who also has compassion for others. Just a great story and I can't wait for more.
A Warrior’s Heart by Misty M. Beller is the first book in the Brides of Laurent series. I have always enjoyed Misty’s books for the gorgeous Western setting and epic adventures across mountain ranges. This book is a little different in that it takes place in one location, but what a beautiful place to stay for this story! I loved learning about the unique village of Laurent and the strong and innovative people who lived there. It was fascinating to get a close-up look at their way of life. How they taught several languages to their children, the French-inspired food, and how they literally carved a way of life into the heart of a mountain. I loved strong heroines, and the author is great at writing women warriors. I loved how Brielle was a leader, respected among all the villagers--including men. But I also loved how she was still a woman with vulnerabilities all her own. It didn’t take long for me to admire her as well. I loved Evan. I loved his tenacity, his loyalty, and his big, passionate heart. He has all the physical attributes of a typical handsome hero, but it is pride and affection for Brielle and her strong role in the community that really won me over. Overall, I loved this story. It had fantastic adventure, history, and (of course!) romance. Any fan of Beller’s will enjoy this new series. And any Christian historical fiction fans will love it, too! I was given a copy of this book by Celebrate Lit with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Misty M. Beller has been an interesting author to read over the last couple of years. She's known for her small casts of characters and for pitting them against some of the most beautiful and harsh landscapes in the north. A Warrior's Heart was quite different and yet the same.
This first book in the Brides Of Laurent series had Misty M. Beller's trademark elements of danger mixed with romance and vividly painted word pictures of the unforgiving surroundings. But A Warrior's Heart also had a surprisingly large cast, an entire village in fact, and the adventure and romance all take place in the near vicinity of the mysterious hidden community of Laurent.
The idea of a village hidden away for decades in the mountains of Canada is what first caught my attention about the Brides Of Laurent series. It was just so intriguing to think about. Toss in the fact that the story is set during the fictionally neglected War of 1812 and you have the makings of pretty good novel.
I finished A Warrior's Heart a bit sooner than I expected, Brielle, Evan, and the villagers of Laurent just kept drawing back within the pages. I enjoyed my first foray into Misty M. Beller's exciting historical romance Brides Of Laurent series and I am definitely looking forward to my next adventure into the wilderness...
(I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
Misty M. Beller has established herself as an author who writes about the struggles of survival of people in the Montana/Wyoming/Canadian Rockies. She adds a little twist in A Warrior’s Heart (the first book in a brand new series from Beller).
The twist? A community hidden and living in the caves of the mountain. When Evan stumbles upon these people while on an expedition commissioned by James Madison, they are immediately suspicious—and no one more than Brielle.
Much of this book takes place in the cave where Evan is being held, so there are many slow sections with him talking to his captors or listening in on conversations, learning more about them. The majority of the action takes place at the start of the book and near the end. The middle tends to drag if you aren’t a fan of details. However, the romance between Brielle and Evan is a slow and sweet buildup that is enhanced by those same sections.
If you enjoy character-driven stories with some history and a little bit of danger thrown in, then A Warrior’s Heart may be just what you’re looking for in your next read.

Misty Beller always writes such wonderful tales! I love them! The scenery she describes is amazing and makes you feel like you are there having your own adventures. This is book one in an all brand new series! I can't wait to read more! I really liked learning about the people of Lauerent. They fascinated me and even made me kinda giggle in certain places too. I'm not going to say what happened because I don't want to spoil it for you but there's a beautiful message waiting to be discovered that we readers can use in real life. A gentle reminder that God is in control no matter the situation. Evan and Brielle. What interesting characters! I enjoyed meeting them and I hope that I will see them in the future. What a weird way to meet. Highly recommend! You'll not want to put this book down! My thanks to Bethany House publishers for a copy of this book. My opinions are my own.
A wonderful beginning to the Brides of Laurent series. I love this author’s writing style and how her creative mind works to conjure up something new and different that holds my attention. Brielle is a warrior at heart determined to protect her family and settlement from destructive outsiders. Her inner strength is to be admired but eventually might she need to lean on someone else? I love Evan and how he finds strength in God and reading His word. Both characters grow and become embedded in your heart by the conclusion. Throw in a character that can’t be trusted and it adds that suspense element. I love how Ms. Beller brings frontier characters to life and paints a picture of their lifestyles. I can not wait to read the next installment in this series. I received a complimentary copy from the author/publisher. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
I enjoyed reading this novel! The descriptions are beautifully told and I had no trouble envisioning the scenes. The premise of the story caught my attention right away, and although the story started a little slow, as the tale unfolded, it began to capture my attention. I liked the romance a lot and enjoyed getting to know the main characters in the book. Brielle is a strong female character with a remarkable passion for those she loves. There is adventure and danger as well as mystery that kept me reading and even surprised me with a twist that I was not expecting. This novel is well written and definitely worth the read! I look forward to more in the series.

This book starts what appears to me to be an excellent and exciting new series! It was quite different than previous books of this author that I have read. All of her books keep you reading. There is no putting down a book! Lot's of action. No dull moments. I can hardly wait for book 2.
This new series takes place in the Canadian Rockies and a settlement of people living in caves in the mountains. It's amazing and you will not want to miss reading this. The heroine is a strong woman who is in a leadership position in this community of Laurent. There are secrets and "bad guys" and sweet romance. You will love. I know that I did!
I received an ebook copy from the author through NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.
My review: A Warrior’s Heart carries a fairy tale-like quality with its isolated village, a warrior princess, and an intriguing and possibly dangerous stranger. Set during the time of the War of 1812 but in the Canadian Rockies, the village of Laurent shines in its uniqueness. Relationships draw me, and the one between Brielle and Evan is classic. Was she trying to kill him? Did he intend to harm her people? Secrets and past sorrows create tensions on top of tension as they strive to discover the truth. I loved the faith aspect of this story, so important in the struggle between right and wrong, hate and love. I need to visit Laurent again soon; it now holds a special place in my heart. A Warrior’s Heart earns five stars. Recommended! I was given a copy of this book by Graf-Martin Communications and Baker Publishing Group. All opinions are my own.
Another inspiring mountain tale from Misty M. Beller! A Warrior’s Heart is a great start to Beller’s new Brides of Laurent series. It has a very interesting premise and setting, and I’m so excited to see more of these characters in upcoming books. I highly recommend this one to readers who enjoy a bit of adventure, romance, and faith in their books. 4/5 stars
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I really enjoyed this book! At first I feared that the setting was never going to change, but that fear didn’t last long. This book is filled with characters that point me to Christ, and fill me with a desire to always have prayer and thanksgiving in my mouth—that has to be be my favorite thing about this book. I also enjoyed that the character of Evan was revealed to the reader alongside Brielle. I definitely recommend this read if you enjoy historical fiction and honorable romance :) OH! And the representation of powerful, Christian women—YAHOO!
