Twisted Tales Retelling

Skilla

Trading one monster for another.

That's the unfortunate situation I've found myself in now.

But it isn't her cold and frozen demeanor that has me seeking more.

It's her touch. Her energy. The commanding nature she so easily emanates.

I can't help wanting to surrender.

Even if that leaves me in pain begging for more.

Skilla deserved better💔

have you ever read a character who deserves the whole world and reading them being constantly beaten down actually makes you emotional?

that’s Skilla for me. this whole book i low-key wanted to cry because she didn’t deserve to be treated so awfully by the people around her. firstly by Ruby and K in Vibe and Hush, so naturally i wanted her to get the love she deserved in Frost.

welp that didn’t fucking happen.

Naamie was not the right heroine for Skilla. she was a cruel, nasty piece of work and constantly put Skilla down, who by this point had experienced a lifetime of pain, abuse and general misery... which Naamie knew about and still exploited for her own personal gains :/ it was truly godawful to read. i hated every second of it but i couldn’t dnf it since i was too curious to see if Skilla found some kind of peace or happiness.

but throughout the whole book, it was always her having to suffer. Naamie essentially getting away unscathed each time while she or someone else chipped away at Skilla’s self-worth. it was nauseating to read, like it physically pained me at times. telling Skilla she’s worthless, that she’s nothing, that she’s easily disposable... i truly couldn’t handle it. it was just god-awful to read.

that’s why i have to give this one star. despite loving Skilla, i really hated this book with my whole chest. when one MC holds all of the power over the other one, im not about that shit it’s so gross. at least with Ruby and Aura, and K and Calypso, the intense power they had over each other was mutual, ebbing and flowing between them equally. but with Skilla and Naamie, it was always Skilla suffering, being humiliated and hurt, discarded and overlooked, while Naamie held all the power and just made Skilla feel like shit more often than not.

so it’s a no from me. this has low-key put me in a bad mood😭😭 i wish i could unread it sooooo bad.

and the PNR aspect of this was extremely weak and all over the place... very JLA. i just don’t think it worked for Skilla’s story, at all. she needed something in the same realm as Hush and Vibe.

but instead she got this🙃

i loved Vibe and Hush so i was looking forward to this bc Skilla was a side character in both books that intrigued me, but her story just felt... lacking, to me. the pacing felt rushed and i wasn't invested in the romance the way i had been with Ruby/Aura (vibe) and Caly/K (hush). the beginning was the only part that had me hooked, but things went downhill as i kept reading.

it was an interesting switch from cults in pandora's box to supernatural beings in this, though. 👀

Frosted is an F/F Dark PNR stand-alone. It's also Pandora’s Box meets Fated world, which I love and appreciate. Plus, you have a fantastic retelling of Snow Queen.m

I always loved Skilla in Pandora’s Box series. I always wondered about her back story and felt she was meant for something bigger and better. The author did not disappoint my expectations. Her Character growth is my favorite part of the book. How she went from just doing what she had to do to survive to thrive and all the emotions in between alone is five stars.

Na’amah is ice to Skilla’s fire. She is captivating and did intrigues my interest. At times, of course, she did piss me off. There is always a reason behind her method.

There are so many lies, deceptions, and degradation filled with lust and love. I know degradation can be challenging for some people. Personally, I love it and how the author portrayed it in this book. It was perfect.

My only constructive criticism is it seemed a little rushed towards the end. Maybe an extra chapter or two with a few more details. Otherwise, it would have been a five-star read for me. Overall,l I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and Yes, I recommend it.

❄️ Paranormal Romance
🖤 Snow Queen Retelling
❄️ FF Romance
🖤 Dark Romance

This twisted retelling of- The Snow Queen, follows Skilla and Na’amah.. I loved that the author wrote a story about Skilla; I loved and adored Skilla in “Vibe” and “Hush” so my anticipation and excitement was a bit ehh, after reading this retelling. Don’t get me wrong I fucking loved this but it was too rushed, too fast paced throughout that my head was in a rush trying to understand. The gaps with one scene would automatically jump into a different like HUUUHHH??

Skilla’s character development THOOO, lord. I loved it. She was this angry, heartfelt women who just wanted to be put first and that’s would made me want Skilla’s story and just fall in love with the way she handled everything in the Pandora’s Box duet. She’s had a rough life, she’s broken beyond repair but she’s a survivor that’s toughened up because of life. I love those type of women that Liza James writes and it’s just relaxing.

Na’amah.. on the other hand, was uniquely interesting. She’s one of the four Queens of Hell— Sister’s casted to hell with Lucifer and Lilith. Na’amah trying to find 7 women for Lilith’s harem, it was so interesting to read with Skilla being apart of it but then the twisted turns happen and it just shocks and confuses you in a way that is unique and loved there romance even more.

TW/CW: mentions of rape, rape, violence, dubious con, and more— I honestly can’t remember them at this time 😅😂

Go read this kink ridden WLW, vampire fic. Seriously; it’s a great read.

Na’amah can step on my throat✋🏻👌🏻

In my opinion, this is Liza James’ best book so far.

(TW’s at bottom)

We’ve got so many queer & wlw characters it’s unreal (literally, there was more than I could count, just assume everyone is queer unless stated otherwise. It’s honestly a perfect world.) There’s also poly rep with the harem.

It’s a really interesting horror, vampire tale, that is truly captivating and fresh. It’s great to have an adult WLW vampire tale that isn’t Carmilla ✋🏻 and the mate/fate themes are really intriguing.

With lucifer added to the mix, and Aggies character arc I would hope perhaps there will be a future story following her path.

We have demons, the underworld and a modern world that is no less horrific. Fallen angles and queens that feed from harems, all there to power Lilith.

It’s worrying that Hell is almost a reprieve for Skilla. Her life above is dark, and twisted so perhaps the world below to her is a light she’s been searching for.

There’s a huge portion of BDSM and kink (will list in TW’s) but please note there is no sense of aftercare/willingness/safety systems (I mean they’re literally vampire queens I don’t think I was expecting that anyhow.)

All in all I loved this. I’ve enjoyed James’ previous works but as someone with ptsd found the descriptive SA scenes a lot (for me personally.) I found with this novel whilst there were SA scenes; they weren’t as descriptive, and were handled in a way that just let them add to the story without being too much for me. It allowed me to enjoy the spice far more ✋🏻😂

TW’s

SA, mentions of prior SA experienced as minor, SA from step sibling, (SA scenes aren’t too in depth but there and multiple mentions) physical assault, BDSM with no after care, Subspace, blood play, spit kink, Master/sub forced relationship (initially, but enjoyed by sub) , Blood slavery, dubious consent.

This was a dark unique and intense retelling of the Snow Queen and I absolutely loved it! The writing is excellent the characters are complex and amazing I loved being back in the Fated world and getting a deeper dive into that world and some new twists and turns. This was so good plus it was steamy hot ! Definitely intriguing and definitely recommend!

“I want to be closer, and yet you’re already living in every part of me.”

After not really liking Vibe, I decided to give this author another try in another series. It didn't take too much to convince me: f/f light retelling of the Snow Queen set in a dark paranormal world. Sounds great. One of the heroines was a minor character in Vibe, so I had some background information going in. And while I liked this a little better than that first book, it's still not very good? Man, I guess I just don't like this author's writing, with the constant profanity and purple prose. I don't mind cursing at all, but all of the f-bombs are genuinely silly to me, especially when used in prose. And some of the images she cobbles together are pretty much just word salad: a bunch of words that don't actually mean anything and don't convey whatever emotion she's after.

As for the romance between these two women... it's not very romantic. You can get as dark as you want, include as much twisted stuff and taboo kinks as you'd like, but at the end of the day, I want to root for the characters to get together and have an HEA. And I couldn't! Some time near the middle of the book I thought we were finally going to get some positive character development, but nope. Na'amah is cruel to Skilla from day one, degrades her in almost every possible way, and that's fine as a kink, but the fact that she discusses nothing with Skilla, negotiates nothing, just kidnaps her and expects her to do as she's told... ugh. Huge turn off. Skilla starts off trying to be as defiant as she can, and let's just say the pivot to her loving Na'amah and yearning for her attention was not skilfully or subtly done at all. I didn't believe it.

And just... if you give me a main character who's pining for attention and love, whose previous romantic encounters have been with women who just wanted to use her for sex, who is constantly raped by her step-brother; if you give me a main character like this, I just really want to see her paired up with someone super protective and adoring who will meet all of her emotional and kinky needs! Not... whatever Na'amah is. She's the opposite of protective. Even when she's showing affection, Na'amah is just kind of mean and unappealing. I really did not like her. I think it's interesting that Skilla has all these darker kinks and needs that tie into her trauma, but the way it was explored... to me, that just isn't romantic. Like I said, there were some moments where I felt like the characters were actually developing a bond beyond sex, and I started to like it, but that never came to fruition in a way I enjoyed.

I think for me, dark romance needs to restrict most of the dark elements to things outside of the main characters. Because this just doesn't work for me. Ah well.

Alca don't make me repeat it

Liza James is the queen of rough love. There is nothing gentle in this fated love between a vampire and a human. But Liza writes a compelling story. The world she builds is dark, beautiful and full of interesting characters. The sex sizzles and is guaranteed to grab you by the throat and slam you against the wall. If you can handle a dark love story you can't go wrong with this one.

~𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒚𝒐𝒖, 𝑵𝒆𝒘 𝑮𝒊𝒓𝒍. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂 𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖'𝒗𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒆~

This enchanting story is inspired by the fairy tale 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗻. It’s a known fact that I’m irreparably attracted to retelling, when they have kinky twisted tones I’m a goner.

I liked the interpretation Liza gives to this popular fairy tale originally told by Andersen. Although I was expecting something less predictable I enjoyed the dynamics and the world described.

I must admit it took me some time to get into the story. I felt there were too many hints but not enough developments, it was like all these loose threads and I wasn’t given instructions on how to bind them together to see my complete canvas.

I wasn’t instantly drawn to Skilla, she came across as too whiney, she didn’t question anything and let the events lead her without putting up too much of a fight. I liked Na’amah better, I appreciated how her inner struggle was portrayed. I didn’t feel an explosive chemistry between Skilla and Na’amah, given the nature of this otherworldly tale I was expecting something devastating, but I only got a mild connection. As I read everything and everyone grew on me, the hold on this story was a slow building for me and I only was fully invested towards the last part of this story.

~𝑰 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒕 𝒊𝒔, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒚 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐𝒙𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒎𝒆 𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆~

I know I may be demanding, even though I eventually enjoyed this journey I can’t help the feeling of something missing. I have read that the characters in this story are also part of other works so I’m sure if I were to read them all the pieces would fall into place. However since this was part of a collection where multiple authors Give their contribution on a single fairy tale retelling, I would have appreciated a more detailed background knowledge.

Wow, Liza James pulled out all of the stops with this angsty FF read! Skilla and Na’amah were Fire and ice, give and take, vulnerability and strength. It was like a raging war of them fighting themselves for control and admitting to themselves the soul deep connection between them.

The angst and tension, the lust and hate, the passion and love between Skilla and Na’amah was intense and all-consuming. Both trying to deny this indescribable pull between them. Both fighting with very real pasts that effect them in the present and the thoughts of an uncertain future. But neither could deny that soul bond that tethered them to one another, finding the other half of their soul.

This book was fantastic and it was so great diving back into the Fated world!

I'm so sad I didn't love this damn book. Honestly, it is closer to a 2.5 than a 3 star, but I rounded up because I just love Liza so much. I have high hopes for her next release, but this one was just not my favorite at all. It's so sad because dark sapphic is my favorite thing, so I really wanted to love this.

Ik heb nog nooit een romance gelezen als dit het voelde alsof er iets miste maar ja dit is meer een bond ding dan echt falling in love maar het was wel genieten dat zeker

''I traded one monster for another, my step-brother for an evil entity''

''Are you afraid?''

''Skilla is my Fated''

''I want her to bite me, right now, in this moment''

''You are the greatest I've ever had, the best I've every tasted, Kitten''

''I am nothing without you. My Fated, my other half. I will never regret stealing you away that night, claiming you as mine the second I saw you''

Hi Friends! Let me tell you about this book I just read. This tale set in the Pandora’s Box and Fated universe is a crossover I didn’t know I needed! Skilla is a dancer at Pandora’s Box, who is tired of always being in control. So much so, she decides to get lost in the dark call of the club next door. Na’amah and her sisters are otherworldly, dare I say vampiric? Skilla’s essence calls out to the sisters setting in motion a kaleidoscope of pleasure, pain and kinky fuckery to appeal to any fan of testing their limits. I have to start by saying that I have learned to throw all expectations to the wind and just strap myself in for the ride Liza takes me on and I am never disappointed. Her writing is wholly organic, peppered with her notes of herself throughout. Her words weave into free flowing stories that are dark, unique and filled with sapphic energy. She has found her home in this genre and I am here for all the words on all the pages.

✔️Dark Paranormal Romance
✔️FF romance
✔️Snow Queen Retelling
✔️Vampires and Magic

🅼🆈 🆁🅴🆅🅸🅴🆆:

Skilla is smitten with the girl on the stage. The club is for all those people with dark desires and kink and where she let's herself go. When she goes further to explore in a room, two girls are suddenly on her and touching her and she doesn't know whether to push them or let them go on.

Her life is so much different and painful and she yearns to escape that life but can't.
I wanted to kick her stepbrother but also felt for her as she has nowhere to go she has to stay with him and go through all that.

But this time when things escalate and get all the more out of hand, she is saved by a fierce stranger.

Soon we along with skilla find ourselves in an unknown and strange world with people that are not only mysterious but seem to be powerful and equally dangerous.

This story is of four vampire queens of the Underworld. When Skilla is bought to them, she's trained by naamie to get her ready for the bite. But when naamie finds out a Twisted truth then that just changes everything.

I was so unprepared for this Dark and Twisted and filthy ride. Definitely not what I expected but it sure delivers as a Dark Paranormal read for sure.

Some of the scenes just made me go 😳😳. Be ready for An unpredictable wild and twisted ride.

This review will contain spoilers and discuss things that require several trigger warnings.

Recently edited now the overwhelming anger has faded a bit.

Oh I wanted to love this.
The concept of an FF Snow Queen retelling had me shivering with joy.

I didn’t get that.

- The trigger warning page is severely lacking. “Darker themes and kinks some may find taboo” does not even begin to cover the content of the book.
- It’s riddled with typos, grammatical and syntax errors.
- The pacing is weird.
- The world building is convoluted and often did not make sense.
- Using a cishet man to r@pe a gay woman is a dated, offensive and embarrassing plot device. Get it in the bin. It is particularly egregious that it was her step-brother and that this was not listed in the aforementioned lacking trigger warning page.
- The harmful rhetoric spouted by Na’amah regarding Skilla as a SA survivor is appalling. Particularly as this is not really rectified or acknowledged as appalling later on. Not to mention the suggestion that Skilla enjoyed what her step-brother did nearer the end of the book. Seriously?!
- Skilla falling in love with Na’amah 👏🏻doesn’t 👏🏻make 👏🏻sense. It’s not earned, it just is? I don’t- someone please just explain this to me.
— Na’amah shows how much she cares by telling Skilla she’s worthless, hanging her by the wrists and flogging her without consent, actively trying to make her jealous by touching another woman in front of her, telling her she will be Na’amah *and* Lilith’s submissive so there, and deciding to take away Skilla’s control even more than Rowan did. Like, she doesn’t ever seem to care? About Skilla? Just her blood and the concept of having a Fated?

I just- I don’t understand. That Dark Romance “so wrong it’s right” click never happened.

I spent the whole book hoping she’d get out. Hoping she’d recognise the same behaviours she saw in Rowan in Na’amah and somehow be free of them both.

I feel icky and like I just watched this woman who deserved love and help and care and filthy sex and touch her & you die protection and to never feel second best or used or unwanted fall from one abuser to another but because they’re ✨fated mates✨ it’s fine?!

And we’ve not even got onto the misuse of the term “submissive!” (Quit using BDSM terminology if you’re going to misrepresent abuse and misuse of power as Dominance for the love of god or! If you’re determined to suggest beating and degrading someone without them having ANY POWER THEMSELVES is Dominant behaviour make sure you clarify that in your dang trigger warnings)

Also! Poor freakin’ Brielle?! Whyyyy are the women misused so poorly?!

Wish I could scrape it from my brain.

This book marries the Fated (MF paranormal romance) and Pandora's Box (FF contemporary) series' in a sapphic and spicy way.

Liza did not pull back from the toxic spice (does she ever?). This is my second read-through of this, and it really held up! I liked how she took a character that was a footnote side character and gave her a voice. I would have loved to see a bit more of Skilla's growth on-page, but what we did see was very well down. I loved seeing Na'amah's growth as she came to realize how much Skilla meant to her. I won't say the Icy Queen melted, but I could tell that she definitely loves her kitten in the way only a degradation-loving Domme could.

She spits on Skilla from a place of love!

I don‘t remember the last time it took me this long to finish a book.
I wanted to like this one so bad, but i ended up being bored and i just didn‘t f with it.
For me a huge issue i have with characters in books is when they lack depth, the way Skilla and Na‘amah were written was simply bland and so much was said with nothing being said. The rape was never really discussed, their feelings, their background story. It was basically nothing and i was so upset since nothing was happening.
A huge no from me, there wasn‘t even an i love you or apology for everything Na‘amah did to Skilla.
So many things weren‘t discussed and just completely ignored.
Don‘t really recommend this book.

I'm really stuck on how to word this, but … there were certain aspects of the writing that were awful and others that I kind of got into. I felt like pretty much 70% of the sex in it wasn't consensual but idk maybe that's my misunderstanding of the sub/dom relationship thing. Idk the story was ok, the smut was a lot for me !!! (but also pretty good, it took me a while to get into it). I couldn't help feeling anything but sad for Skilla as she was constantly degraded and whatever and I just wanted to give her a hug.
