Pizza Shop Exorcist #1

The Price of Possession

Rate this book
When my family died at the hands of a demon prince, I hung up my exorcist hat. I’d failed to protect them, and while I was willing to risk myself, the price had risen too high.

Now I’m serving up hot, fresh pizzas to everyone who wants them. I was the only person left to inherit the family business and I’m doing my best to keep it up and running in honor of my loved ones. These days, my biggest challenge is telling off a rampaging customer, and endless paperwork. That is, until he shows up again.

Darius was the only guy I couldn’t say no to, the one who dragged me into the world of the occult in the first place. When he shows up and begs me to assist with an exorcism, I reluctantly agree. He’s still using me; because I’m the best exorcist around and he only calls when he needs my help.

Before I know it, I’ve got an incubus in the living room, a hellhound marking around my yard, and a demon prince who can’t decide if he wants to kill me or… you know. Not to mention the vampire and the Nephilim I seem to have collected. Normally I wouldn’t work with the supernatural, but we all have a common goal. Prevent the crime syndicate from summoning a demon prince and becoming more powerful than we can hope to handle.

If I can keep my cool, it will be a miracle. If I can hold on to my soul it’ll be an even bigger one. No one ever claimed being an exorcist was easy, but to protect those I’m coming to love, I’ll pay whatever price necessary.

This book is intended for mature audiences. 18+ readers only! It contains language and sexual situations. This is a medium burn reverse harem where the girl gets all the guys. Why Choose? Harem members added as series progresses.

DNF at 64%.

This wasn't bad, I just lost patience with it.

If the MC said mate one more time I was going to scream. I can't remember whether she was supposed to be British or Australian, but either way it was incredibly annoying and absurd.

I also am not a fan of fast burn and the relationships in this were pretty much instantaneous to the point where I wasn't really interested in it.

There is a plot, but it feels very much like a side story to the not very interesting relationships.

I don't like to rate books I don't finish, but this probably would have been a 2.5 to 3 star read had I kept going.

It might just be this wasn't for me though. Despite the mate thing, it wasn't bad if you like fast burn and a plot that is mainly about the relationships.

This was a really bizarre book and not because of the subject matter. Both the author and the protagonist are American but the protagonist throws "mate" into conversation so much that she sounds like an aussie on meth. Every time it happened, it knocked me completely out of the story and, holy crap, it happened a lot. Like almost every other sentence of dialogue. I lived in the UK and I know Australians and I've *never* met anyone who uses that term so much.
I know it sounds incredibly nitpicky but it was like trying to read a book where someone honked a bicycle horn in my ear every thirty seconds.

Mate, mate, mate.

description

I didn't think this would bother me this much.
I mean I read the reviews that said this fudging word was over used and I thought I could just ignore it.
I was wrong, mate.

The story was good but I kinda feel meh now that I finished it. I am not curious enough to pick up the next book.

Spoilers ahead

Our h is a former exorcist who left the life after her family was murdered. Her former best friend shows up asking for her help and she's dragged back into the world of exorcisms as demon summoning and possessions rise. Along the way she manages to snag the attention of a vampire, an Incubus demon, a Nephilim and possibly a demon prince. They along with her new pet hellhound join the fight to stop the bad guys from bringing demons to Earth.

*****"
Listen!!!!! This h annoyed the ever living daylights out of me! She's an experienced h, but just like I don't like hearing about manwhores past it's the same way I hated the little references to her past as well. It's ok for a fmc to be a badass without all that smh
If the h said "mate" one more time my eye twitching would be permanent
Zero relationship development. All Attraction was basically attributed to having an Incubus around
Vague plot with bad guys doing bad stuff for......reasons?
I'm pissed that I'm bored enough to read book 2 😭

No cheating or sharing outside the harem so far

‘80’s pits

I nope’d it out in chapter 1. The author built her female
protagonist out of the used, chewed up gum left by every other writer who came before. The fmc is a short, lying, b*+ch, who is supposedly “cool” and/or “tough” because she has pierced ears, a tattoo, and the personality of a full diaper.

I love it when books meet expectations. This one piqued my interest from the series name. Pizza shop exorcist? Sign me up. I didn't look at the blurb before reading so the reveals were new. I judged a book by its cover and this time got lucky. I'm more for the characters and the world building than the plot in this one.

The pizza place. Its a hideout but an interactive one. I liked the set up, how the gang always ends up at the place. Then you've got Billy and the girls embracing Chris' past and making pentagram pizza signs. I really want to see the menu they came up with and I'm kinda hoping they end up summoning a real demon.

I liked Chris. No nonsense dressed as a punk owner of a pizza place, ex exorcist with a traumatic past. It felt like she jumped back into the game a bit quickly, so curious about her past with Darius.

Darius feels like he could be part of the harem. He knows Chris likes sex, used to have a thing with her and now that he's a priest, he seems fine to push Chris to the incubus and Mal. It feels like there is zero chemistry between them, so I don't know if they'll go from friends to lovers.

Sabian. The lover not a fighter incubus. The first clue to the supernatural mystery and the keystone of Chris' harem. The guy is adorable and I like how accepting he is to add more guys. Feels like Chris has commitment issues, so his presence feels like a necessity.

Malak. The dungeon master vampire, not the whips and chains kind. The sweet knowledgeable nerd , that follows Chris home and helps feed a starving incubus. Fast burn in the harem. I loved how no one knew he was a vampire and the more men added to Chris' harem, the more role playing characters he gets.

Mayhem. Hellhound in Pomeranian disguise. I'm not sure if he'll shift into a guy or if he' just a bound familiar. Either way, he's a cute mascot with a deadly real form. I look forward to seeing what he can do and why he chose that form.

Aaron. The Nephilim. Slow burn and can't touch Sabian or Malak. Doesn't know what he is and can detect lies. Seems sweet, almost possessed by a demon prince. Seems like a nice guy but so far the best thing about him is the lie detector.

Ezra. The cock blocking demon prince. I liked the guy from his first contact. I think it would've been a bit boring with him outside like Sabian, so I'm glad he possessed Chris. Out of all of them their relationship was the most complicated but almost the sweetest. It was funny how in denial Ezra was and how their every action was blamed on the incubus. I liked the white space meetings and look forward to seeing what will happen back in his own form.

The ending was a little sad, I'd hoped Sabian would stay. It feels very supernatural based with crossroad demons. A nice mix of guys. Something big is coming so it looks like the more the merrier in the harem department. Can't wait for the next one.

The Price of Possession is book one in the Pizza Shop Exorcist series by Dakota Brown.

This was my first taste of Brown. I liked the concept of a Punk Rock Pizza shop owner getting dragged back into the occult and wiping the floor of demons. I found that interesting, but the book soon turned, meh.

To start Chris, our heroine, has a complicated relationship with Darius the X Best Friend and a past that made her give up being an Exorcist, but when Darius waltz’s back into her life and says; ‘I need help’, she shrugs and says; ‘ok’. This should have been a difficult decision for her to make.

The plot was lacking in many areas and we’re given the same information over and over again. Especially with Chris reflecting on her dedication to the Punk Rock look. Also it’s got very little character and plot growth.

This is a reverse harem romance and the relationship’s are fast and instant. I felt there should have been more sexual tension between Chris’s guys; the Vampire, the Incubus, the Demon Prince, and the Nephilim. Everyone was just so chill about the relationship’s. The first kiss scene is with the Vampire and it was HOT, but after that the sexy times with any of the guys felt mechanical and it became repetitive and boring. The romance’s feel into the pitfall of the men instantly in love with our heroine without any explanation as to why they are in-love.

I really want to like this one, but The Price of Possession was not the book for me. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.

3.5 stars!! It was super cute and unique! I really enjoyed myself and found moments where I laughed out loud! The book was fast paced and chaotic, and I think that added character and charm to the book. I’m definitely intrigued and will read the second book! The ending was interesting and mysterious that I want to know what’s going to happen!!

Also, the FMC was described of having this punk like attitude and attire with short hair... but in my mind I had her with shaved sides and longer on top to put in a ponytail or braid. 🤷‍♀️ Just liked it better that way. :)

I DNF this book at around 40%. When I read the blurb I was like sign me up ASAP. I downloaded the book on KU right away. A pizza restaurant owner who is also an exorcist? Totally up my alley. However, I was left disappointed. Chris, the FMC, left the supernatural world behind when a demon prince slaughtered her family. Five years later, her friend Darius comes up to her and ask for her help. For someone who give up being an exorcist after a traumatic event, she is willing to help him too easily. Oh, and when a demon decides to stay with her, she's like okay. But didn't she keep saying that demons were bad and had to be exorcised? So why would she just accept him into her home so easily?

This book was a huge let down for me.

So far I’m really enjoying this.
It’s started out pretty strong, and we didn’t have to wait very long at all for things to get steamy, which I very much appreciate.
I’m liking the characters and all of their different paranormal proclivities.
The plot is just getting started, but so far I really enjoy what’s happened.

I’m excited to see where this all goes and who all will be in her harem by the end.
This was fun.

Yummy Demons? Yes please.

I liked this books pace and story line. The story moved forward but there was still time to get to know the characters in a lower keyed setting. I ❤ that the hellhound is s floofly little pom as his earth "skin". And smoking hot sub incubus sign me up for the next book.

Different and interesting

I'd really give this one 3.5 stars. I liked the story arc and the characters. I also liked the multiple POVs and that the harem is going to build throughout. The drawbacks for me were 2 specific things:
1. I felt that the flow of the writing at the beginning of the book was a bit stilted. It just had rough stops to the sentences and the flow was not there. It started to get better by about the 5th chapter and then it flowed nicely.
2. It really annoyed me how mych Price said mate. It felt like like overkill.

Other than the 2 points above though once I got into the book I was invested and I'll definitely continue the series.

3,50 stars. It was great!! I really liked the heroine, she was badass. The whole concept about demons and exorcism was very interesting and i liked that the heroine had a history with exorcising and was trying to forget it and not get involved again. The characters were very well developed and the characteristics from each (possible) member of the reverse harem were unique and they had very different life stories and personality traits that made them very intriguing. It's not a 4 star read for me cause i found it a little fast. I wanted a little more slow pacing but that didn't make the story less. I will read the next books.

The main character said "mate" or "naw" 200+ times in thr first 40% of the book. She's from Santa Fe. I've never heard a single person in Santa Fe say that. Kept waiting for her to explain she was from Australia. Never happened. Thought, maybe the sex will be hot though. It was boring. I'm giving up at 65%.

this was super fun and has every supernatural creature you could ask for- demons, vampires, angels. the sexy times are disappointing- especially for the amount of partners she has- but the story makes up for it.

3.5-3.75⭐️’s rounded up.

If I took a shot for every time the word “mate” was uttered in a span of 30 minutes, I would be dead. I understand trying to convey an accent or vocabulary based on origins, but given I’ve lived in two areas of the world that uses that phrase regularly, the repetition of “mate” made me want to punch myself in the face so I forgot. SO IRRITATING!!

Also, not given any decent background of the MC’s beyond a 2 minute blurb was severely inadequate.

Truthfully, the two MASSIVE irritations I mentioned above would garner a SEVERE lack in rating, I am not sure why, but I had to rank this higher than I’d normally would.

But I swear… if the word “mate” is iterated more than 30 times the first half of the book, the author owes me a new iPhone for chucking it across the room from irritation. And I’m literally willing to invest my time and lack of focus on the plot to keep tabs of this monstrosity of faux culture the author did no research on (from personal experience). 😈🤬

**I listened to this on Audible**

I enjoyed this! Price was pretty funny and the guys so far seem nice. This is definitely insta-lust/love.

It says the harem will build over time so not sure how many she will actually end up with. Four maybe? At least from the looks of the first book that’s what it will be. It’s a guarantee that Mal and Sabian will be in the harem. And from the looks of it, Aaron and Ezra as well

Even though this has demons and demon possession, blood and exorcism, this is not a dark book at all. The guys are great to her so far. Can’t really say the harem is built yet since she is only really sleeping with one and slept with another like once. But the author already said the harem was going to be built over the books. No MM or at least for now and so far no OW drama. The guys seem pretty keen on only being with her so I don’t see there being any OW drama

Only thing that bothered me was the constant use of the word ‘mate’. I actually started to flinch when I would hear it lol

the only time you would use the word 'mate' that much is when you want to make sure the other person knows you see them as a friend 😂 and even then this was too much. She uses the word 'mate' more than I use the word 'like', and I use that in like every other sentence.
I did really enjoy the book otherwise, its a 3,5 stars for me. For some reason I thought this book was a Slow burn, but its definitely a fast -medium burn.
it's not a 5 star because I had trouble staying in the story. It felt like everything went a bit fast, no slowing down to really consider what is happening. Plus the FMC kept handling everything with (sarcastic) jokes in her inner monologue

Price is a kick@ss FMC - after her parents are killed by a demon she retired her exorcist job, but now she is dragged back into it by an old friend. She finds herself roped into having an incubus, vampire, hellhound, and demon prince. I think Sabian is my favorite so far. I’m happy book 2 is out so I can download it now :)

You know with a title like this the story will either be an absolute Joy or a total dog. This one was the first!

Really fun story and fun take and twists on a classic fantasy genre with what's shaping up to be a pretty spicy reverse harem.

The best part about this book is that the author doesn't take herself too seriously. And sometimes you just need to read a fluffy book - but one that's actually entertaining and can make you laugh out loud a lot.

And this fulfills the assignment

The only thing I don't like is the narration. It's very choppy and you can hear the areas where she was flipping the page because there's a pause in the most bizarre places.

Also her choice of the so-called mixed up accent that's supposed to be British based is pretty much just an American doing Australian.lol

Liked the premise, characters, most of the plot. Exorcist joining with demons was a new one for me, so fairly original. Would have liked a bit more detail on some things mentioned, (e.g. what exactly happened to her family), and it moved a little faster than I like, but otherwise not bad at all.
Didn't like overuse of "mate" in speech. Not natural.
Some odd reactions.
No cliffhanger! Yay!
Will look out for the next one.

Pizza with a side of Demon

This was a great twist on the paranormal world.
Chris Price - a exorcist whom also owns a crazy pizza shop. Is known for being a little eccentric. While helping an old "friend" exorcise some demons she finds herself stepping into a world she thought she left behind. Meeting her guys along the way is surely to make things more interesting.

Malak - AKA Mal - the Vampire with sharp teeth.
Sabian the demonic incubus
Aaron the Nephilim aka half angel
and Prince Ezra (we dont know full name yet) A demon Prince

I'm enjoying all of these characters a lot. Their is a slow build, but I think we get the general idea of who will be in the acutal harem. The lust is crazy good but the actual deed is minor and leaves you wanting so much more.

This book is funny and witty and I am enjoyed all of the characters.

*Overall 4/5
*Heat? 3/5
*Lust 5/5
*First person POV (Multiple people)
*RH (No MM, so far)

What an awesome book! The story was fun, with well-defined and realistic characters. The world-building isn’t fully developed yet, but I suspect the author plans to reveal more about the world as the story progresses. The plot follows Chris Price (FMC), a former exorcist who owns a pizza shop. After her family’s murder, she left the supernatural world behind, but when her ex-best friend, a priest, asks for help with an exorcism, she gets pulled back in.

There are two current love interests in her harem, with two potentials on the sidelines: Malek, a vampire occultist; Sabien, an incubus; Aaron, a Nephilim; and Ezra, a demon prince. Price also has a hellhound pet named Mayhem, who hilariously takes the form of a Pomeranian.

The only thing that really bothered me was the way the FMC spoke. She overuses the word “mate” like a British or Aussie person, despite being southern. She even manufactured the accent because she liked how it sounded, making it feel forced and annoying. However, I loved the rest of the book enough to overlook that.
