I loved this as a bundle so I could flow from book to book without losing any of the characters and the action.
I considered the Bone Witch the weakest of the three books. A lot of time was spent world building - which I usually love - but so much energy was spent on fashion and beauty that I felt the storyline suffered.
I do like a character driven arc and I really enjoyed Tea's awareness of herself as a sister/daughter and how she evolved into her own person. Her stubbornness in acknowledging her flaws set up the woman she would become, and while she could speak the words of forgiveness, it was clear to those around her (especially Mykkie) that she had no plans of changing her behavior.
A necromancer who raises her familiar from the dead, Tea is a bone witch who is feared - but needed - throughout the eight kingdoms for her powers. She survives her training and those who would use her, but at a cost.
The second book, The Heart Forger was my favorite of the trilogy. The book didn't have as much about Khalad as I would have liked, but his story is woven in well with the actions of the eight kingdoms, the asha, and the bone witch. The Prince does have some moments which really bring out his serious side. Of all the characters in all the books, I feel Prince Khalad is the most dimensional.
The books focus on the found family trope - one of my favorites - and I loved how we see Tea grow into a woman who chooses to surround herself with those willing to be a part of her journey. Her fearful powers continue to grow and she discovers a love that can match her in courage and in strength - both physical and magical. (although he is not a necromancer).
The last book, Shadowglass, reinforces the concept that the only difference between a villain and a hero, is who tells the story. Tea's bard is frightened and curious but committed to seeing her story through to the end. The POV changes between the bard and Tea (both told in first person) move as quickly as the action as Shadowglass moves from resurrection to revenge to redemption. Tea's actions mean a cataclysmic change for all of the eight Kingdoms, whether that is for good or evil? You decide.

Four stars because there were far too many anachronisms of modern slang and action which distracted from the worldbuilding, unique magic, and a villain who would destroy the world to save the men she loves.

"The dark asha ran her hands through the urvan and then the heartsglass before enveloping the startled Heartforger in a hug. 'You saved me, Khalad,' she whispered, 'In the coming days and weeks, no matter what other people say about me, remember only this: you saved me, and you saved us all." -- Tea to Prince Khalad in The Heartforger.

"A life worth dying for is a life worth living after all." Tea to Lord Kalen in ShadowGlass.

I am not one to write reviews on books but The Bone Witch series is one of the best series I have read in a long time, perhaps ever.

The series is set in a beautifully thought out and world full of depth. Rin Chupeco weaves a world full of magic, intrigue, and treachery. She takes a unique view on magic that I cant say I have seen anywhere else that is refreshing as well as the switching viewpoints from past and future makes the book interesting and allows for the reader to try and guess the conclusions without becoming overly confusing.

This book for me is one I could read over and over again and still gain more enjoyment from. A book that I could read again and again and still find more information and notice more tidbits from. The plot twists, the story, the depthy world-building, and romance was amazing.

My only point of contention is possibly that it is so full of information and details that it is mildly difficult sometimes to keep track of, which only encouraged me to take notes, I did not see it as an overly negative thing.

In conclusion I recommend this book to anyone who is a lover of fantasy and new turns on magic. A very good very entertaining book.

Absorbing story with characters for you to love and hate

The world RC built for Tea, Fox, Kalen, and all the others is filled with richness and depth. The characters, with their keenly felt and intensely human emotions, draw you into the story quickly and deeply. You can like them, love them, or hate them but no one leaves you indifferent - even the monsters, as hideous as some of them are, sometimes touch your heart.
The only thing that kept me from giving this book five stars is that it is told from two separate points of view that alternate, and while the majority of the tale is told from the heroine's point of view I found it increasingly difficult as time passed to keep the timeline straight in my mind. This may have been because it took me a long time to finish the series unfortunately real life kept pulling me away, and so it was easy to lose track of what I had read, and what events had already happened or were yet to happen. Well worth reading, though, and the ending is wonderful in the truest sense of the word.

Woefully crafted

Where do I even begin to describe the absolute gem this series is? I haven’t cried in a long time and setting the last book down was like saying goodbye to an old friend. Everything was so vivid and unique. One of the series I plan to keep for when my daughter starts coming of age, because it’s a tale of coming of age. Not just of love and monsters but duty and honor. Rin is a master at crafting this world and taking us through its beliefs and challenges. Their words will haunt me, and I cannot regret the decision to go through such a wondrous array of emotions through the lens of her style. I may savor it again in a few years, like finding a daeva at the end of the line.

bone witch bundle

I started listening to this on a trip and had to buy the books because I needed to know how the rest of the story went.

At first I was drawn to the themes and ideas behind the story. Then I was drawn to the marvellous descriptions used by the author. Next came the characters, I needed to know how Tea trained, who she fell in love with, what would happen to Fox.

By that stage I was addicted. The weaving storyline’s, past, present and Tea’s remembering and the retelling of the Bard. I laughed, I cried and I fell in love.

These books might be written for young adults but this middle aged adult loved them .

Good read

Well written, well plotted and because I had all three books to read at once I found no fault with the story. I usually dislike trilogies, The second book is always weak, however I read this as one novel and it worked.

The Bone Witch review

I really liked the world and the depth of the characters. I also liked the brother/sister dynamics and how much they loved each other.

This book series was a great read. I often can predict events of books before they happen. With this series I was still guessing throughout. Great fantasy, mystery combination.

Writing style made it confusing and the first book had way too many details,
