A Frost spirit who runs a coffee shop. A Cupid who works as a divorce lawyer. And magic in the air ...
Raine’s never been a conventional Cupid. He likes organization, his job as a successful lawyer, and black coffee, and he dislikes messiness, physical and emotional. He tries hard not to use his powers, because he’d rather not manipulate anyone’s desires, and he’s not planning to fall in love himself -- and he wouldn’t trust it if someone fell in love with him. But the owner of Raine’s favorite coffee shop is endlessly patient, kind even in the face of sarcasm, and an artist with flavors and window decorations ... and he could even challenge Raine’s resolutions about love.
Don enjoys his life. Even though he’s a Frost, he finds comfort in giving people warmth: good coffee, a cozy refuge from the rain, holiday decorations, and overall cheer. But one gorgeous Cupid seems immune to Don’s cheerfulness -- and he keeps coming back, day after day. Fortunately, Don’s always liked a challenge, and now he’s determined to make Raine smile at least once ... and he’s discovering that Raine’s sarcasm hides a generous and lonely heart, keeping the world at bay.
And if Don and Raine can learn to trust each other -- with new coffee flavors, with their hopes for the future, and with their hearts -- the Frost and the Cupid just might find their own magical happy ending.
Reread 11/2024 5 stars. One of my favorite comfort rereads. K.L.Noone's writing is extraordinary. -------------- reread 03/2024: 5 stars, all time favorite. Love Raine and Don so much. And the writing style, the chemistry, the feelings. Well, everything. ----- read 12/2023: 5 stars. Another stunning book by K L Noone! Amazing writing style plus awkward, sarcastic, realistic feeling dialogues, a beautiful storyline with unexpectedly kinky sex thrown in twice. The sex scenes were written in a unique way, it's hard to describe, there was banter and checking in and sweetness interwoven with light bondage/discipline, dominance/submission. No hurting/SM though thankfully for me. They was written in a way that felt perfect for both the MCs characters.
The characters Raine and Don (Frost) were the central part of the story, though. They were shown in a awesome way. I loved them both so much, it was a joy to see how different they were but how both longed for the other.
Did I mention the beautiful writing style??
Some quotes..
"The November air nibbled chilly and brisk along bones, teasing hair and eyelashes with the promise of winter. Raine’s boots were quiet on the damp pavement. Don glanced at him and briefly felt too large, too clumsy, too bearded and unkempt; but Raine glanced over too, and suddenly the clumsiness eased. The height felt like strength. Protectiveness. Awkward, maybe, but sincere."
"Raine took him to a building that, no surprise, was one of the glittering extravagant high-rises, centrally located and lavish and polished into an ideal; the glass shape felt friendly, though, in a way not all of them did. Pretentious and excruciatingly expensive, maybe; but it knew as much and got a bit embarrassed about the fact. "
Now I'll have to search for Luke's book!
Oh I nearly forgot to mention I loved that there was a nod to asexuality and a secondary character was demi 💜.
Okay, phew, this still counts as a pride month read! This was adorable and lovely, and it managed to feel like a slow burn romance, despite only being a hundred or so pages. I did dissociate a couple times, but I reminded myself, “you are currently reading a book that you are enjoying, so pay attention!” but other than that, I was right as rain! That's a joke because the guy is named Raine. And look, Frost & Raine is hardly breaking any new ground, but I think there is a lot of comfort to be had in a book that’s familiar, like a hot cup of coffee on a gray Seattle morning. Or tea in my case, I’m a tea guy.
Wow, I'm flashed. How can this book even be real? What you should know before reading: you should like coffee, otherwise the book will get boring quickly, I think. It's a short book, but a lot of time passes between the MCs' encounters. And it's BDSM, not intense, but it's there and it's rather unusual, so keep an open mind.
This is the story of Raine Amari, divorce lawyer and despiser of Valentine’s decorations and Donald Robert Frost, coffee shop owner and classic science fiction fan
They are both mystical beings and don't particularly like their own magic. Don is a Dom with no practical knowledge and Raine is a sub who needs someone to take care of him. But this is not your typical BDSM story. Their first scene is heavily filled with dialog and snippets of dialog. So if you prefer sex scenes without anything like that, you shouldn't read the book. Because it's slightly annoying. On the other hand, it's also necessary. I really struggle to pinpoint this book. I liked it a lot, but it's rather difficult to recommend, because I think it has a lot of potential to annoy the reader. That being said, it is really wonderfully written and I am very satisfied and had a lovely time reading it. It's definitely unique.
“I take it back. You’re not a lawyer. You’re a cactus.” “I’m a what,” Raine said, setting down his coffee-cup. Don considered this a success. “In what universe am I a succulent?” “Prickly. Pointy. But softer inside. Full of water.” He had the feeling this was not helping. “Good for rescuing people when they’re lost and needing…water.” 🥰🥰🥰
“I want to get to ruin at least one of your suits. Getting you all filthy, dirty, sticky with it…maybe making you come in that suit, all over yourself, and then getting you on your knees so I can come all over you…“ 🥵🥵🥵
Don and Raine truly come to life in this magical love story. Beautifully written with a poetic lyrical feel, this book just blew me away. What a lovely thing reading this was!
K.L. Noone's fans know she writes beautiful BDSM romances, and Frost & Raine is a perfect example of one. Exquisite power exchanges, blended with charming and witty banter, and consistently delectable descriptions of coffees and cakes which made my mouth water! Lovely.
It was beautiful and heartwarming but also frustrating at times. Because the slow burn was burning very slow. Or maybe not at first, but after their first point of contact.
I very much enjoyed this anyway. It was utterly charming.
This is a story light on the paranormal and heavy on the romance. For all that Don is a Frost and can create ice and etch designs onto windows, he’s still just a guy who owns a coffee shop. He’s friendly, personable, and he likes to make people happy. He likes to play with flavors and find something new that will make his customers smile, and when he can make Raine smile, Don’s whole day becomes that much better. For all that Raine is gorgeous, Don loves the man more than the suits and the hair and the golden eyes and — okay, so he loves those parts, too. But he also loves seeing him intent over spreadsheets, gleeful over writing emails, or driven when he’s helping a client. He loves the compassion, the competence, and the person that is Raine. The rest is just a pleasant extra.
Interesting world-building and I really enjoyed the characters and the writing, but while I quite enjoy reading kink, its inclusion here felt jarring and the dynamics and concept in general just weren't working for me. Very much a personal preference thing, I think, so I'm not rating.
This was a treat and I don't know which I loved more, the banter or the descriptions of Don's coffee creations.
The story is seemingly and opposites-attract tale, but really it's more of an opposites who complement one another, more than anything else. While the characters are paranormal beings, that point wasn't so heavy that it took away from the relationship. Things didn't happen just because of "paranormal being reasons" which can be annoying sometimes. Paranormal being reasons were addressed, in a good way, that drove the story along and made for a more believable HEA for two very different people.
The characters also had a lot of "moments" and I loooove "moments". They can make a story.
The secondary characters were great as well and if the author's hint at this setup becoming a series, I will auto buy the next story as soon as I can.
I thought this was super cute, and the touch of kink was nice to balance out all the sweet but... a) I could have done without the ‘sir’ and b) it got to the point where things just felt too drawn out... not to mention a lot of that drawn out time is time apart and I can only read of som many different flavours of coffee before it gets tedious. If this had been 2/3 if the length it was and focused less on coffee flavours and testing Cupid’s influence... or had it just as long but cut out on those two things and had them spend more time together, I would have enjoyed this more. As it was, I skimmed over a lot in the last three chapters,
This was a spur of the moment read that I did enjoy for the most part but I also probably could have lived without.
I really loved both characters, but their “coming together” is where things didn’t really flush out for me.
Spoilerish below...
Throughout the book Raine is very reserved and somewhat “uptight” in his own specific way. I really just didn’t believe he could turn into such a needy mess, with the sudden need for domination with someone he’d been so held together around. It was like all walls dropped in an instant and he went from Raine, uptight lawyer extraordinaire, to needy club twink in an instant, just didn’t work for me.
If the real world was anything like romance novels, we would all need to be chained to our headboards every night. Every story does not need to include BDSM. Period. DNF
Update: I did finish this and there is enough here to be really romantic. But you’re going to have to get RID of the D/s stuff. If you want a sweet fic, you’re going to have to keep it sweet. It’s like two different books that do not work together.
This was LOVELY. The writing is magical, the characters are all fantastic. The banter and sarcasm between Raine and Don is perfect. I giggled my way through this book. I’m not really into BDSM myself, but I love really good aftercare and Doms who take really good care of their subs.
2.5 stars. The story was cute and the premise sort of interesting (reminded me a lot of X-Men lore and politics but it's a different kind of genetic elemental power rather than mutations). The dialogue was awful though, like super stilted with half sentences. If it was more of a first person POV with a lot of the dialogue as internal monologue it would have worked better. When the MCs finally get together in the last quarter of the book, it gets very sappy and the dialogue devolves even further. It just read as very awkward and unnatural, like both characters were Michael Cera or Jessie Eisenberg, and I got annoyed.
First time I’d read anything by this author, but I’m glad I took a chance.
Don Frost loves his coffee shop - he enjoys making his customers happy, especially Raine Amari, a gorgeous divorce lawyer, who might actually like Don’s coffee; it’s tough to tell, Raine never reveals anything - he’s buttoned up very tightly, especially for a Cupid, who’s supposed to be all about Feelings. But Don is persistent, and slowly Raine allows a friendship to spring to life. As their relationship blazes into More, Don is amazed at how well he and Raine seem to click. However, Raine knows all too well what happens when Cupids fall; how can they be sure their feelings are real????
It’s a rather short story, which is too bad. The world-building is pretty abbreviated, so you don’t get to find out too much about the ‘personifications’ who live amongst us. Also, I understand why Raine decides that he must hold himself back, despite his feelings for Don. But…there’s no climax (pardon the pun), no moment when we see Raine decide that enough’s enough and that their feelings for each other are genuine. So…what….they’re on a break, and then they’re not…?? That was a big letdown.
But the writing is wonderful; the dialogue snaps and sparkles, and the imagery is wonderful. I added a fourth star for that!!!!
dnf 65% first I've struggled with the writing, then there was absolutely no depth. over the time I got used to the superficial writing and they were, cute until... the scene. that came out of nowhere (like hey we don't date or spend really time together but come on let's have a scene) and was like an 180. Suddenly everything was Sir, Yes and Please from Raine (I was scared he might burst into tears any moment) which absolutely didn't match with his character. you can absolutely be submissive without a full character change. that throw me off. don't recommend it, neither as a fantasy read because those elements were almost non existent and definitely NOT when you're into BDSM because it was cringe worthy.
I really like that slow burn, somewhat lyrical writing style, and frankly the story really worked for me. Until the last chapter. That last one was just too much for me. Too many I love yous, too many my, just too many...sweetness and declarations.
Overall I really enjoyed the book though. I liked the world building, which was just there enough to make it interesting without it being intrusive or full of holes, and the characters dynamic was fun. I would love to know more about other Personnifications and I hope the author revisits this world in other books.
I’m as shocked as you are but although the story was okayish, I utterly despised the style. In the last quarter I was praying for this to end and me not having to read about another anthropomorphised piece of furniture, bookshelves winking or what have you. And I-love-yous and you-are-mines 100x per page. And those artfully short sentences. Like this. Also cinnamon and cardamom. Smokey and sweet.
I enjoyed this story quite a lot, and it would have gotten five stars had the author figured out a satisfying ending instead of an extended lovemaking scene that just wanders to a stop. Ah, well, they can't all be perfect.
After the last book by this author, that didn’t really work for me! I was just giving this a try as it was already sitting on my Kindle. And have to say I enjoyed this quite a bit - it was cute without being overly sweet.
And well, kindness and explicit consent normally always get me.
Noone is becoming my go to for feel-good romances. I fell for this couple immediately. The banter! The sass! The love language of coffee and cactus! It was wonderful. Slight touches of paranormal are embellishments but never outweigh the story. I adore Raine and Don .
Really sweet story with some great pining and a wonderful focus on communication and understanding. I really loved the dynamic between these characters, they fit together perfectly.
An enjoyable MM romance that features a prickly cupid who works as a divorce lawyer and an amiable frost spirit who wears flannel shirts and runs a coffee shop. I’m glad I stumbled across this book, as it served as my introduction to Noone. I’m now reading my way through her backlist. I love the way she uses the English language. She creates beautiful images with words.
Cozy and sweet... The whimsical and magical part could been better if it was more fleshed out. Instead I got about a hundred different types of coffee drink... And the kink part was clunky...
I don't know. Something about this just didn't grab me. Why are there 'supernatural' types at all in this story? Any coffee shop owner/divorce lawyer would do as well.
Maybe I've just read way too many stories about baristas lately.
It was...okay. Light, a bit sweet - if the reader is in the mood, a nice story.
In fact, it was entirely TOO nice.
I did, in actual fact, really LIKE the barista (actually coffee shop owner) and I liked the lawyer, too.
Was there conflict in this story? I can't remember.
If ever you're in a bad mood, just immerse yourself in the flowing, refreshing, lyrical waters of a KL Noone book and you will be restored. I love her writing so much. This is a contemporary romance with fantasy elements, kind of a different PNR.
The "Frost" of the title is actually Don, coffee shop owner and "frost" powered "Peculiar." He has a wintery touch that cools and ices things, including his shop windows. Peculiars all have powers and are registered, but coexist with humans, no big deal. Don has become evermore fascinated and delighted by the grumpy, snappish new big-deal powerful divorce lawyer in town, Raine, who happens to be a Cupid but has devoted himself to making sure his clients are treated fairly in divorces. I loved that twist on things...he makes sure that when things break down, his clients have the support and fair treatment they deserve to stay whole themselves. He has good instincts about fairness.
Anyway. These two are adorable...Don creating new coffee drinks, Raine reluctantly trying them, critiquing Don's frost-covered artwork on his windows...showing up time and again and leaving just as swiftly but always making Don's day brighter by existing...
It's a slow, slow burn of daily 5-minute interactions and pining and looking forward to someone brightening your day just by walking in the door. Why it takes them so long to move forward...well, I think Raine's abilities as a Cupid and his caution because of that are the motive for the very very slow development of the relationship, and, the journey is lovely. I want to hang out at this shop with Don and his fabulous workers ever day (and he adds some wonderful baristas as we go!)
There's one off element that I didn't understand, and it does involve OM drama/sort of action. For any who might be upset by that, I'll explain. Raine is a Cupid and has abilities to sense attraction and who might be interested in and a good match for each other. I'm guessing that sense might be muddled when it comes to himself, but... It cast a pall over this otherwise incredibly beautiful tale. This author doesn't usually do that to me, and I'm still a little sad and confused about it.
It also created a question in my mind as to whether Raine had done that before, because he came in with a bruised wrist months ago, and it was kind of said to have been from a bike accident, and Don gave him a lovely cool healing touch, but...now I don't know what to think about that either.
These things prey on my mind...!
However, the story is still so beautiful, and the warmth and kindness radiating from Don, the disbelief and joy Raine eventually finds in realizing this love is real (there's a whole 'nother thing, too, a test of sorts Raine asks to put them through, because Cupids *can* influence people into wanting them, wanting what they want, so, he has to take measures to be 💯 sure he didn't influence Don in to thinking he loves Raine...yes, MORE pining and yearning ensues...! But it's so cute the way the text and stay in touch and finally give in and call and FINALLY are able to embrace their future in a way that felt so meant to be. Don turns out to have the dominating nature Raine needs, and the promise for their future is glitter sparkling bright and beautiful.
Gorgeous story telling, even with the hurtful confusing part.
HEA, slow burn, lawyer - shop owner, "Cupid" and "Frost" powers, enchanting world and storytelling that offers comfort from the cold, cruel world with kind characters and an idealized version of reality I wish we all could live in. Sigh. Sort of mostly safe for me? A little sadness, but...not unforgivable. Still highly recommended. Try KL Noone. Her style isn't for everyone, but, if you love her, you will LOVE her.
First book I've read about a Frost. It was nice to see a variety of paranormal creatures (Personifications) as a part of society. Raine is an uptight, rude Cupid lawyer. He comes to Don's coffee shop everyday and they begin to exchange snide comments. Don get's Raine to try new coffee flavors and Raine starts helping Don organize his paperwork. It's a very slow build up and nothing much happens for a while. Not sure what triggers it, but they finally decide to go on a date. Raine totally changes into It's not very fluid and Don keeps asking question which takes the romance out of it. I really didn't like it when Raine decides . This made no sense to me and pulled me out of the whole story.
