John McNair is a junior writer of clickbait articles for Spotlight, a respectable print magazine with an awful website. Still, clickbaits bring in ad revenue and John is good at his job...though what he really wants to do is edit the print magazine, or at least write serious articles.
Mitchell Turner is one of those modern rockstars who came up through the poppy boyband circus. He's got everyone's attention, a busy schedule, and....a very deep closet. He's in the spotlight, whether he wants to or not.
When John discovers Mitchell's secret, he realises it could be his big break - if only John could get close to him and write the feature piece of his dreams, he's sure to be promoted...if only he can stay out of love long enough to get it printed. NB! This does not have a HEA! This a prequel novella to the novel Encore (coming September 2021) and lays out the backstory for John and Mitchell's whirlwind second chance romance.
Kate Duncan is a nonbinary entity who prefers the honorific Lord or Mx and female coded or genderfree given names. They write exclusively queer romance, typically of the contemporary or sci-fi sort.
They currently reside in the Greatest of Britains in a house with three cats and a growing number of plants.
I assumed this was a romance and was shocked to discover it ends with a break up. [Edit: Alas, it is mentioned in the blurb that there's no HEA but I didn't notice it.] However, it's not only that; the break-up comes because one of the MCs exploits and betrays the other in a terrible way. I found John's actions an unforgivable breach of trust, and my hope is that Mitchell finds someone else who loves him the way he deserves it.
