Some of my MacHalo buddies are in the middle of a reverse harem craze - I, of course, am above such silly fancies and am only reading along with them to make them feel better ;)
The Vixen's Lead follows Kit Davenport aka The Fox, a daytime high school senior, nighttime international master thief with a difficult past as an abused orphan. Her secret identity is uncovered by some elite secret agents (who are somehow all under 25) and joins the team to protect her job and her best friend/mastermind hacker Lucy.
So no, not the most unique setup in the world. I've seen these character archetypes in a million other books, but in this case, I can overlook the lack of originality. The "my tough past made me stronger" and the "I'm a master at my job but somehow still in high school" tropes are just plain fun, so who cares if they're overdone?
On to the love interests, of which there five (we can only expect this number to grow from here on out). River - the Alpha type, team leader Cole - dark and dangerous, a natural fighter Caleb & Austin - good cop/bad cop twins Wesley - the shy, introverted computer genius
My current favorites are Cole, for his Eastern European growly voice, and Wesley, because sweet & shy darlings are hard to come by in the reverse harem genre.
tl;dr A fun, fluffy book. Don't expect literary genius but do expect to be entertained.
If you know me, you know I will read just about anything with that nasty delicious reverse harem tag on it. Call me sick. Call me silly. Call me obsessed. I don't care. It's my vice and I love it.
However, this little problem of mine can lead to some rather unsavory books. Many of these books are PWP type stories with a rather flimsy excuse for a gang bang of some sort, most of which I cannot stomach to finish. All the men fall instantly into love with the female victim LEAD and cannot keep their hands off of her.
This book, on the other hand, has a strong plot pushing it forward. Kit isn't all over the guys and the guys aren't all over her. Sure, there is some insta-lust going on but that happens.
That's highly refreshing for this genre. It's a slow burn as opposed to what I have started calling the "Bottle Rocket Chemistry" where it all just goes up very quickly but isn't very thrilling in the long run. Drawn out tension makes the plot so much thicker and more enjoyable.
So yeah, this book has a real plot. Kit Davenport was adopted from a rather sketchy foster home when she was 13 by a Daddy Warbucks type character who doesn't have many fatherly inclinations but sends her to a nice school and gives her everything that she could ever possibly want (and does not perform highly choreographed dance numbers in his mansion in a nice suit with her).
This leads to Kit doing some light breaking and entering on her spare time which in turn leads to some interest from a few private investigation companies. Without giving away too much of the plot, Kit ends up having to live with 5 guys, all older than her and giving off some serious sexy vibes. A few of them don't like her but she takes it in stride, instead focusing on the good instead of the bad like every sane person would do. These guys cook, make coffee, clean, work out, and are all tatted up. What's there to be upset about anyways?
What I liked about this book is that the guys all had individual personalities. Any time when you are dealing with characters that have similar backgrounds and interests, you can end up with carbon copies of each other. I've gotten a little sick of the macho assholes being all dominant with the small meek girl. It's been done before. These guys had a range of talents and personalities which was refreshing. Also, they all didn't fall in love with her right away. There is tension between them as well. Not everybody is on board with the whole idea of sharing right away.
This book had some good fantasy/sci-fi elements to it too, which only contributed to the plot. It was fast paced and it all made sense in the end (which is shockingly absent in reverse harem style books). Kit has real problems to work through and her best friend is there to help her work through it. When the guys find out, they are supportive but not overbearing. It is such a Goldilocks scenario where they can be too hard or too soft but this book is just right.
I'm down with the story line and it is something that I would be interested in finishing at some point.
After seeing such glowing review of the book in reverse harem genre with fiction and an exciting plot I ready to bite into this juicy book.....
Oh boy was I seriously disappointed.
1. The h is this badass robber yet come time she just gets fucked over repeatedly and has no skills to speak off. This is called uhh lack of characterization.. Casually girl-on-girl hate, lots of circumventing to essentially make up for this pea-brained twat we are supposed to call the main character.
2. Inconsistent side characters and unreasonable plot sequences... Horrid world building or descriptions of the book. Casual misogyny, sexism, rape-culture and victimization thrown in to add the right amount of 'drama'.
3. I am tired of writing this review so go fuck yourself. I also got tired of reading the book so I quit. ^^^ (I imagined the author would say something like that when writing the story as it was a piss poor imitation of one)
Why in God's name are you still reading the reviews?!? Haven't you read enough already....quit wasting time and go read it. You won't be disappointed. Promise. Pinky swear.
Cool heroine? Check. Overprotective alpha males? Check. Humor? Check. Awesome female best friend? Check. Sexual tension? Check. Action? Kinda check. New boyfriend for my harem? Definitely check.
- Hot hot hot - No insta-love (yay!!) - #FemaleFriendshipRules & Lucy is awesome.
The Vixen's Lead is a great begining for a series that got all the potential to be also great. Kit and the guys are great characters by themselves and totally awesome together, the book is fast paced, exciting and greatly enjoyable. I want more!
I was in the mood for a RH but didn't want something too trashy, and this was definitely a good choice because it delivered exactly what I was looking for.
🆗 THE BEGINNING GAVE ME major Kim Possible vibes, and to say I was a Kim Possible fan when I was younger would be a major understatement 😂 But after the first couple chapters, the whole thief and spy thing took a major backseat, which I found pretty disappointing. There was so much promise, so maybe we'll see more in the sequels!
🆗 EVERYTHING WAS VERY CLICHE and cheesy but I'm in the mood for it so it's working for me so far. I liked that this RH had an actual plot and I'm interested to see where it goes next
✅ THE ROMANCE WAS SLOW BURN for the genre, which was perfect because I always prefer RH when it's slow to start. There was some sex in this book, but it fit into the story well and didn't seem too quick for the relationships
Overall, this was a quick and easy read and I'll definitely continue reading the rest of the books for now.
2nd Reread (2/23): Still love it just as much as the first read. Tate James is an amazing storyteller.
1st Read (3/22): Obsessed. Kit and her boys (and Lucy!) are aaaamazing. I haven't loved a storyline, characters and concept like this in years. Moving onto book two immediately.
The Basics: Genre: Paranormal Reverse-Harem Standalone/series: Series. Book #1 Rating: 5 stars.
I finished this book, and then I stared at my kindle in silence for about ten minutes after finishing, just processing what I'd just read. And do you want to know what i'd just read? The best god damn book I've read all year.
I'll keep it spoiler-free, as I know the book hasn't released yet, and I don't want to ruin anything for anyone.
Chesca's Checklist of Awesomeness. -Amazing characters. -Interesting Plot. -Well written. -Intrigue. -The sexual moments were actually sexy. -The darker moments made me feel horrified. -The humour made me laugh out loud. -And that extra special something that just keeps you turning the pages.
Kit Davenport Kit is a fantastic main character. She didn't infuriate me. Her emotions felt real, and her reactions were always believable. She has had a difficult life, but that isn't what she lets define her now & I loved that about her.
This is the first book from this author. The. First. I actually can barely believe this is her first published work. The execution was flawless and flowed as if written by someone whom had spent a lot longer in the industry.
This book, is actually incredible, and I for sure will be wanting to get hold of a print copy for my personal collection of favourites. I only keep less than maybe 100 books in paperback these days because of space, and I would happily make room to give this one a place.
I'm excited for more of this series, and I am even more excited to see what else this author will put out in the future, she has a great talent. Well done, Tate James, I'm impressed.
Trigger Warning! This book does contain major triggers for some people. Please message me, or the author, or anyone you know who has read it if you are concerned about what the triggers may be. I'd be more than happy to answer you, so you don't have to be upset by it. <3
3.5 – 4 Stars (Reverse Harem with little to no steam)
I saw this book pop up on my MMF and reverse Harem feeds. I had no idea what it was about and I started it and stopped and waited a few months and went back to it because of the reviews.
The MEGA disappointment was the face this book is 100% tame. I guess I don’t understand the reverse harem slow burn books. Don’t get me wrong, it was an engaging read, a lot of stuff happened and I liked all five guys, but the slow burn? I don’t know if it was my cuppa.
I like slow burn books for typical couples and I’m fine with YA, but this one just kind of got me puzzled.
Kit was a good Heroine. She’s strong and independent. I like that she can heal herself and that it only happens when she gets excited.
The five guys that come to play acted a little immature (to actually be the twenty-somethings they were playing) but it didn’t get on my nerves too much. Like I said, I liked them all and I don’t really have a favorite, maybe the rich one that likes sports cars and dressing nice? I know so typical.
Kit is a thief and she finally gets caught by the five guys from the Omega group (they work as a team) and they are like family and are very open. So no one gets jealous!
Kit wants to know a little about herself, where she came from, why does she have powers and the guys are going to help her and also teach her and also protect her.
Like I said, I kind of wish it was a typical book and maybe even a love triangle, but the slow burn reverse harem was too hard for me to get into. I need SEX!!!! Like the dirty raw, smutty full disclosure mode please and sure throw in some kink for good measure.
I might continue with the series only because I’m curious if it gets dirtier if it doesn’t, please let me know.
HOLY SHIT GUYS! I freaking loved everything about this book. No.. really... I DID! Can I marry this thing?
Do I even need to warn you about spoilers? Yes, yes I do. Don't read if you haven't read this book yet.
Overall, I loved this book. I devoured this book. I feel so bad that it has taken me so freaking long to write this review and my comments but I mean life sort of got in the way. Stupid work. I can't wait to dive into the next book but I should probably catch up on reviews. Maybe. Eh...idk
Ugh. Such a good book if not for the OW drama. 30% through the first book and then i had to quit :(
One of the heroes starts dating/ kissing/ seducing the queen bee of the school (who is an asshole to the heroine) and the hero does nothing to stop her. He even flaunts his relationship with the queen bee in front of the heroine. Not to mention he’s shared girls multiple times with his twin brother and he’s still hung up on his ex🤮
Spoilers:
The hero that I talked about above was head over heels in love with his ex who had a baby (which he assumed was his daughter) until he figured out his ex had been cheating on him and he wasn’t the father.
I don’t care what the situation is but stop fucking comparing the heroine to your ex. It’s not hot😐
I don’t get why people write OW drama in books. At this point it’s getting annoying.
Update:
After DNF’ing this book I picked it back up the second day. Truly there was nothing wrong with the book, I was very interested in it but the OW drama made me quick to DNF. After getting through the first book the one of the OW’s isn’t mentioned again so that was a relief. The other OW does come back, not to cause drama or anything but she’s killed later on so no worries😂
Safety info: No virgins OM/OW drama 1 girl 6 guys No MM but the guys aren’t opposed to it so I would say it’s very light MM. When one of the guys was separated from the heroine he remained celibate. Thank god😂😂 No others after meeting (they didn’t have sex after meeting the heroine but two of them did get in bed and kiss another woman. This was the part that made me dnf lol)
If you can get over the OW drama in the first book then you should definitely give this series a shot. It’s very addictive to read.
REREAD 21/10/22: reread this during exams because i couldn’t remember anything at all, it was like reading it for the first time! great fun :))
~~~
this was pretty good! cliché it may have been - which it definitely was - it was still a fun book with interesting characters. i am so ready for the next book! all the guys seem pretty great ;)
It was my first reverse harem book and I’m not saying I didn’t think it was at least a liiiiittle bit weird but I got over it fast. I think this book kinda sorta eased me into the new world of... sharing.
Fun characters, interesting backstories (and new main story) that I want to know more about, and honestly who cares about who Kit sleeps with, because they are all great guys in their own way. I liked that they all have a different nickname for her (well, most of them) and they all genuinly care about her and each other. Hopefully the second book will be as much fun as this one. Great start!
Amazing first book to this series! I can't believe I waited so long to start reading this. It so intriguing and I can honestly say I did not see that coming with Kits Dad! Oh and I can't wait to see how the relationship with the guys plays out. Especially Austin!
This a pretty good read so far... nice storyline and oh I'm so loving our bad ass heroine with her kick ass heroes... yeah this series it right up my alley...
Not bad - the writing style is fine and the build-up believable enough. It's an interesting twist how they came together and how she does her crimes. For some reason I'm not feeling much interest when she does bond with any of the guys though, not fully sure why. The main character has a rough past but has recovered a great deal. It's not fully realistic, of course, with her abilities and motivations so early in life and focuses mainly on a creepy story where human subjects are being tested on for "enchanced abilities". A lot is already solved in this first book, but plenty of questions remain - especially with her mother. Full review soon.
This is a connected series it’s a new adult reverse harem romance with some paranormal influence which I’m expecting to expand further as the series progresses. The heroine Kit Davenport attends a prestigious school with her best friend Lucy, but things haven’t always been so rosy for these two, both former foster kids who were put through literal hell as children they now cope with their tragic past by punishing those involved via their deep pockets. They then funnel the proceeds of their daring heists into several children’s charities.
Kit and Lucy were both adopted at thirteen hence their current situation but lately Kit has been feeling off. She’s always had some extra unusual abilities but since turning eighteen her imagination is working overtime.
After another successful job as the fox the girls think they’re in the clear when two new students identical twins then start school Kit finds herself naturally distracted. Caleb is a total sweetie but Austin is the opposite and seems to hate Kit despite her doing nothing to incur his ire and he’s not shy about his feelings either. Then we have some others slowly added into the mix Cole the hot tattooed former MMA fighter. River the hot Brit and alpha leader and then we have Wesley the tech man who is also a complete sweetheart, so much delicious testosterone.
So I enjoyed this it was well written and I am planning on reading the next one in the series but for me, there was also something slightly missing and I can’t quite put my finger on what that was exactly. For now, I’m reserving judgment and carrying on maybe this will be a slow hook rather than an instant draw so I’m giving it a chance to see if things will click further along for me. It definitely had some intriguing ideas though.
Shit, did I just drool a little? I wiped my mouth while pretending to scratch my face. Nope, all clear, just mental drool.
I really enjoyed being in Kit's head throughout this book. Not only is she amusing, she's feisty and her wandering thoughts around all 5 men were fun to read. Not only that but the plot kept me interested throughout actually above any romance going on. If I were to knock anything it would be that I didn't really get a feeling for why exactly they all liked her. Aside from that, I'm looking forward to the next book.
So, somehow some of us went down a reverse harem hole and aren't coming out anytime soon. One female, more than one male. In this case 5. Part of the fun is picking your favorite while you read.
So, although Kit is a bit meh. Her boys aren't. And although the story could use more, The boys are great and it's enough of a plot to keep reading.
Well damn, I had been waiting since the release of the first book for the series to finish before reading it and boy was that the right call. What an amazing start of a series. Kit is a truly interesting and skilled character, I can’t wait to see her learn more about herself and her powers. That ending (minor cliffy) has me eager to jump into the next one. I’d say this is a mild burn Rh as she does sleep with one of the five guys and gets naughty with another, but with five of them and six books the sexual moments were rare. Time will tell. Loving this ----**Parts of Review did not save :(
I knew it had been too long since I read this one! July 2019! What have I been doing with my life. I literally put this book off for days. I was like nah I need to do other things... video games, adulting, those types of things. Because I KNEW as soon as I started this I wouldn't put it down. And what the heck do you know! I finished it in hours! Lol. I can't help it. I just devour these books.
Kit and her boys never cease to amaze me. I love this series so much. Like so damn much. It will FOREVER be my favorite RH book. And trust me, I've read plenty of RH series looking for one that compares to this. And none ever do.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Second time read & review July 2019
UGH! I love this series so much! I'm so happy my girl, Andy, convinced me to buddy read this series with her for her first time!
Kit is still one of my most favorite of all time heroines. She is so bad ass. She sometimes does stupid stuff but it's all in the name of love for her friends. Kit had a terrible childhood and she doesn't let it dictate who she is as an adult. The childhood she had to endure made her a better, stronger person. And it makes you appreciate her even more for it.
The guys all absolutely won me over all over again this time around. They are one of the main reasons that I love this series so much. Now I love me some reverse harem books but these guys and Kit are my favorite RH pack!
You are kept continously enthralled with the story line through the book that you can't help but be drawn in to keep flipping the pages. It's that good. <3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ First time read & review February 2018
I LOVE this series! I love everything about it. The writing, the story line, the characters, the world (even though it's just based in the US).
The character building in this series is absolutely amazing. You learn about the characters literally throughout the entire book. More things just keep happening and happening. It's like there is so much going on that you're kinda overwhelmed but that if it didn't have all that stuff happening you'd be underwhelmed. Ya know?
The guys! And the smut! OMG! It has been perfect! It's like I can't get enough!
Anywho, I've already read book 2 so I don't want to put too much because I don't want to spoil anything. But I am a feign for this series! Definitely one of my favorites that can be read on KU!
I’ve been wanting to read this series for a while now and I really liked it.
Kit Davenport is a regular high school student by day. By night she is the Fox and steals from the criminally rich and gives it to the poor. Her last heist is about to go slightly hay wire though.
I really liked Kit as a heroine even though is in school, she is 18. She is tough, sassy and has some insecurities that make her likeable.
Hot, alpha men are turning up in Cascade Falls and Kit isn’t sure why but one thing for sure she is attracted to all of them. Awkward or maybe not.
This is reverse harem which till now I haven’t dared to dip my toe in and well now I’ve just dumped into the deep end. In Kit’s place I would also go for all of them Caleb the sweet guy. Cole the deadly fighter who is gooey in the middle. River the alpha of the team and a Brit to boot who likes to be called Sir. Austin who doesn’t want to like Kit, so he snarls at her all the time btw Caleb’s twin and Wesley our lovely resident geek with nice tight buns.
I had no idea where the author was going with this I though it was paranormal but then it veered into human experiments with a secret government agency (Omega Group) which the guys belong to. They currently have two objectives find the Fox and end the human trafficking ring.
While the Fox is out on a heist, she stumbles on some information to why she might have more strength and agility compared to normal people. The story is engaging, and Ms. Tate has created something truly unique and she got to RH first the way I see it. I think this also the only series that I would read in this genre.
I’m nearly finished with book 2 so it will be off to book 3 next.
2nd time reading I'm so happy to be rereading this! Kit is so great, she's smart and strong and sassy. She stands up to the guys and shows them how badass she can be. I also like that she isn't afraid of her sexuality and connects with a few of the guys quickly. The heat level starts out pretty good and it only ramps up from here!
I also like Kit's sisterly bond with Lucy. They're close and Kit would sacrifice anything to keep Lucy safe. Lucy is insanely smart and her snarkiness makes me laugh. She's been through a lot and I'm glad she has a good friend to protect her.
I'm ramped up now and will be moving on to book two as soon as I can!
********************************************
This was really good! I love reverse harem books and this was well written. The romance was there, but they're young and we're building on it so it was slow. Normally I don't like slower romances, but it fit the story and there was enough that I was happy. The paranormal aspect was cool and I can't wait to learn more about it in the rest of the series. The guys were fun, except Austin who needs to get over himself, but Cole is my favorite of the guys. He's a fighter and I like that he's tough, but sweet with Kit. Her heists were awesome and I hope we still see her pull off cool stunts in the next books. The pacing was good and didn't feel slow and the narrators did a good job, especially the guy who did all male voices.
Audio: 3.5 stars for Marnye Young she should have just narrated the whole book. 1 star for Matt Haynes. He was just bad, very monotone and no variation between any character.
Book: DNF @69%
This is bummer. I read the whole series over 4 years ago I believe. And I loved it, but this is a prime example on how tastes change.
I didn’t like any of the characters and I felt very bored with the whole book.
It’s too bad, makes me nervous to reread books I’ve loved over 5 years ago haha, but if it was truly that good it would have held up.
I would say skip the audio if you wanted to read this, just read the book don’t torture yourself by listening to it haha
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I can't believe I did this to myself again. I thought I saw 3 books available. Well the 2nd is out but I have to wait until the end of January for the 3rd!
This is another reverse harem paranormal and so far is awesome as of reading books 1 and 2. Things in book one aren't as graphic as book 2. Def adult only.
Loved this book and going to start book 2 now. Full review once the series is finished.
Amazing! Please note that as a rule I do not award 5 stars to the first book in a series. I let the series earn a 5 by the final book. However for The Vixen's Lead I am making an exception. I loved this book from the first to the last word.
Kit had a crappy childhood in foster care, one that she has tried to put behind her once she was adopted. Some nightmares can't be forgotten however and revenge works better for Kit than therapy. Along with her best friend/sister Lucy on tech support, Kit has become an internationally wanted thief, The Fox. They have been successful for years, but are finally caught. Being captured has never been so good! Rescuing Kit from a kidnapping, a team of secret agents takes her into their custody for her own protection. They work with her to find out who wants her, discover secrets from her past, and find out why she has special abilities. Their investigation turns into a suspenseful, dangerous adventure. It also leads to some sexy times as Kit grows closer to several of the team members.
This is a wonderful story. It's well-written, clever, and extremely detailed. It's original and has a few surprises. The cast of characters is top-notch. Kit is an intelligent, resilient, fiesty girl with a passion for designer shoes and a coffee addiction. Her strength is remarkable; her vulnerability is heartbreaking. Not only has she survived a horrible past, but she's still able to enjoy life. Her love for Lucy is exceptional. I loved that these two girls were each other's rock. Lucy is a brilliant little firecracker herself. These two are a dynamic duo. The guys were yummy! Cole and River stole my heart. The early morning/late night scene with these two and Kit was perfection to me. Wesley is adorably awkward, Caleb is a sweetheart, and Austin's unwarranted nastiness gives me something to fixate on for the future. Her time with each guy and with the group is nicely balanced and allows for each relationship to come about in a natural, believable way.
Truly, I can't stress enough how much I enjoyed this book. Fun, fun, fun. I could not put it down; it's definitely a read til the wee hours kind of book. I now have a new appreciation for the fox; beautiful and sharp witted. There is so much to come with this story, so many unanswered questions still, so much progress to be made with the guys. I can't wait for book 2!
Trigger Warning: The abuse and trauma Kit suffered as a child could prove too much for some readers. It's never sensationalized and is necessary to the story, but the images are brutal.
