On The Job Training

Rate this book
"This should be a light job."

Famous last words. Especially when you're hunting mages.

Cass Wheeler's first day with a new SWAT team doesn't exactly go as planned. What was supposed to be a easy takedown becomes a violent nightmare as the rogue mage the team faces turns out to be far more powerful than expected. Now Cass has to take the reins and pull her team together in order to survive the carnage and take down the mage before the death toll rises.

This prequel short story is set a few years before the events of Shards Of Glass, the first of the explosive, innovative, genre-bending Mage Hunters series.

If you're looking for a good old-fashioned rollercoaster shoot 'em up complete with magic and monsters, the Mage Hunters series is for you.

Interesting

Well, that was interesting. Different. I like the different perspectives and I feel they flow well together. I think the author captured a typical reaction from a superior when Cass leads the team out of the building successfully. But her team backs her up and recognizes her leadership.
The whole concept of conjuring isn’t new to me, but the way the author portrays it is. I have never read of someone having that ability/strength to maintain such a force on the level the author has the villain maintain. It seems outrageous, but then it’s also part of the “freakishness” of this type of villain.
The book is only a prequel, therefore it only gives you the background of who Cass is, her team, and how they came together. It leads you into the authors Mage Hunters series. I recommend this before diving into the series so that you might decide if it’s your cup of tea.

A very nice prequel short story that sets up the Mage Hunters series. Unlike a lot of prequels that are solely in existence as a teaser to get you to buy the first book, this one was a complete story. It introduces the characters, a group of "mage hunters" that are hard-core gun-toting, grenade-launching SWAT team members. The story is sort of an urban fantasy, meaning it takes place in what could well be our own contemporary world except with magic. Just how prevalent the magic is...well, I'll have to wait until I get into the series itself to know that.

The story is non-stop wall-to-wall action with our heroes forced into imaginative solutions lest they fall to the horrific abominations that have been summoned by the mage they are hunting. Even then, not all of them make it out alive. Reminds me a lot of Larry Correia's Monster Hunter International series. That means I'm up for more to be sure.

Good shoot em up

I really like how this book wasnt a fish hook like most prequels meaning that the story had a beginning and an end none of the usual where it's just a nibble on a hook and just ends where you are forced to buy the next book if you want to finish the story

I really enjoy Andrew Piazzas writing style. This was a fun read and original take on conjuring. The characters and world building were both very well done.
