How can you find joy in the midst of deadlines, debt, drama, and even the death of loved ones? What does the Christ-life really look like when your days are gritty, long, and sometimes even dark? How is God even here?
“It is in the dark that God is passing by . . . our lives shake not because God has abandoned but the exact opposite. God is passing by. God is in the tremors. Dark is the holiest ground, the glory passing by. In the blackest, God is closest, at work, forging His perfect and right will. Though it is black and we can’t see and our world seems to be free-falling and we feel utterly alone, Christ is most present to us...”

Ann Voskamp is a farmer's wife, the home-educating mama to a half-dozen exuberant kids, and author of One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are, a New York Times sixty-week bestseller.. Named by Christianity Today as one of fifty women most shaping culture and the church today, she's a global advocate for needy children with Compassion International, a loser of library books, a stirrer of soup, a loud laugher, a kid snuggler, a Jesus lover and honestly, a bit of a mess. It’s okay really. Grace is the most amazing of all. Her online journal, one of the top 10 most widely read Christian blogs online, is a relief of quiet vulnerability and an oasis of sacred, seeing God in the everyday ugly beautiful.
I wanted to like this book. And I do like the overall point she was trying to make to see God in everything and to truly give thanks in all things.
However, I cannot stand her short and choppy sentences and rambling ways. I also really didn’t like the last chapter where she tended to sexualize our relationship with God. It was weird.
Ann Voskamp invites us to understand the importance of gratitude. She explains the meaning of eucharisteo (communion). "Charis: Grace. Eucharisteo: thanksgiving. Chara:joy" When we thank God, we are focus on him not on our problems, God becomes the center and we can receive his grace and his joy. She reminds us to also keep our hearts and hands open to give back to others and be generous.
It was eye opening especially regarding communion. It's a good book👍🙏
Participated in the 'study' associated with "One Thousand Gifts". Ann's writing style was difficult for me at the start. My study group helped with understanding. Recognizing the abundance of 'gifts' given to me was heart opening.
This book has an interesting concept, writing out 1000 things you are grateful for. But is written just as a stream of consciousness that was hard for me to get in to.
You know how sometimes you are walking through something difficult and, just at the perfect moment, you hear or see or read something that just feels like a hug from God? This book was a big "I see you and I understand" hug from my Heavenly Father. This book has been in publication for quite a while -- I read the 10th anniversary edition -- but I had never gotten around to reading it. Now I think that was probably because I wasn't quite ready for it, and it would not have had the impact that it has had over the last couple of days. If I am honest, I am going to need to read it a few more times to fully digest all the treasures found between its covers. This is true rubber-meets-the-road, nitty-gritty, blood and guts reality of finding deeper relationship with God through gratitude. If you haven't gotten around to reading this yet, please consider adding it to your TBR list or moving it higher on the list. Read by the author, I highly recommend the audio book; although I realized while listening that I also need a hard copy to highlight and take notes in.
I enjoy watching Ann Voskamp speak. The messages in her books apply to me as a Christian even if I’m not a mother or a farmer’s wife. I love the ideas she presents for placing all situations back in God’s hands and looking for the blessings in all situations. That said, however, her books leave me feeling like I need a degree in theology and poetry to read them. I knew part of her story before I read this book, and that’s why I pushed myself to finish it. It’s a hard read.
The profoundness of this book, the beauty of all the imagery and metaphors, the concept of gratitude and giving thanks being the key to joy and life — life-changing!
I didn't love the writing style but I didn't hate it. At times, it frustrated me, and at others, I thought it was beautiful. Probably depending on my mood ha!
A great book that helped me shift my perspective in my faith. I will admit, her poetic style of writing is beautiful, but sometimes confusing and hard to follow. There were a few sections I had to reread to understand.
I wanted to give this book 5 stars because I loved the way it made me think. It gave me lots to ponder and chew on. She lost me at the last chapter though and some bits didn’t make much sense. But it gets 4 stars for lots of thought giving!
