First, my review, then it’s time for a new copypasta:
“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.” I am not a bot even though my reviews are identical. Of course, that is what a bot would say trying to pass itself off as human. But I would argue that trying to pass as human is enough to at least qualify as a reviewer. I enjoyed this book, so my goal is to promote it and help the author. I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. It is my opinion that Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. Or not if you don’t think this book is for you. That choice is all yours and the beauty of art appreciation. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here. Cheers
This book is not a ton of action like the first, BUT Sultans spinning thread like Ciotho of the 3 fates. The first ended on a cliffhanger. This one blends in the background, builds the world, brings it alive and forms a more complete picture with many interesting possible paths to take. The authors second book and much improved writing. A true up and comer! Can't wait to see where the story goes! It really fits being thrown into a world with no knowledge and now using the first moment of peace to TRY and figure it out.
I like where this series is going. James seems to be improving and growing as a character, while getting involved in all manner of crazy conflicts. Want to see what comes next.
This is a good concept, follows the familiar pattern, but some of the plot devices could use work… Without a spoiler, some of the elements and move the plot along longer very random… And there’s a fair bit of filler, so you don’t feel like you’re reading a story that develops but rather a character that stumbles from act to act and is as surprised as you are with each random plot twist or decision.
Well written, good characters, not over powered. The first half of this book resolves the cliff hanger from book one, and is excellently written. Good action, nice story development, very enjoyable, but with some glaring plot holes and clichés. Saying that its still very fun the read. However the latter half of the book was filler leaning towards the next book, and felt ultimately under whelming and dissatisfying. I considered only 3 stars or less, but even with the filler aspect, the first half of the book was very good and ultimately as a whole I really enjoyed reading the book, I just felt it ended prematurely.
So this gets 4 stars because of the latter half of the book that felt like filler. I mean its good, but not much happens. Its grinding to progress stats and levels, much like playing an RPG. But that's it. Yes the MC needs to do that, but it needed something more to round off the book. I hated that book one ended on a cliff hanger, that's bad writing, a mistake that's not repeated here, but not much actually happens for the last half of the book. It was like a beginning and middle, but no end. It needed a bit more adding to the book, some satisfying meaningful battle, or story progression to end on. Some major achievement maybe? Instead it merely trickles away to nothing.
In the first half of the book, the fighting is exciting, edge of your seat addictive reads that you lap up with enthusiasm. They have changing aspects, surprises, and develop well. However the fights in the latter half of the book, all seemed to follow the same format. Cover the mage doing a long cast and use arcane magic missiles, battle over. Okay a lot of it was skill grinding, but there was no sense of danger, so you felt no connection or excitement as the reader. Again true RPG playing, you do grind your skills repeating what works over and over to level up before finally progress to the next real challenge in the game. But this is the boring bits of playing RPG, if you are going to include them at least also show the next real challenge to justify the grinding. That is absent here. Plus if I'm griping, arcane teleport, isn't teleport, its a time stop spell, where he can wander around to elsewhere whilst time is stopped. Only he can't pass through bodies on a battlefield, or bars of a cage, or even through long grass, bushes or trees as they won't move. It seems like a major downgrade from his shadow/dark teleport. I feel the arcane aspect, or essence aspect needs some significant boost going forwards. Something to cheer which seems lacking at the moment. The sword was an awesome addition, so was the cloak he briefly owned, having lost both something is needed to add awe and excitement again.
Better than the first, but I still think that James can be more OP than this
I definitely liked this book much more than the first. My one complaint here is that there seems to be no purpose to the Charisma stat. James’ charisma is horribly low, and yet, he seems to have no trouble with social interactions.
Can Ozure control a Skathi like a puppet? If his cells aren’t composed of living matter, but rather, are pure energy, does that make James some kind of zombie? And again, if he is energy, and must absorb energy to survive, why can’t he consume any kind of matter and extract the energy in the bonds between atoms (especially with the knowledge of such energy from our world)? Or, could he sap the energy of life from a living being? I just get the feeling that there is so much more potential to his new race than he seems to imagine.
Enjoyable book. The only issue was profanity. The use of profanity did not add anything to the story. In fact it was a big distraction.
Every time the"f"word was used it broke the flow of the story. It force the reader to stop and think why was that word used. I believe this is known as Suspension of Believability. Not a good thing.
I loved this book I couldn't put it down. I was saddened when I finished. I can't wait for the third installment. I would highly recommend if your a fan of LitRPG books
