Addison Jo (AJ) Mattox knew this day was coming. Because, well, Lucifer pretty much said so when she left him one man-nugget short of a two pack after their last meeting. Oh, and fate has apparently been planning this party for a very long time. With their future uncertain, Ashlyn wants to meet AJ's family, so with a little time on their hands before the big throwdown, AJ and crew head to where it all began, AJ's home planet, Missouri. The visit has been going well; that is, until AJ hits the frozen food aisle of the local Walmart, comes face to face with some old enemies, and ends up smack dab in the middle of a situation that she never anticipated and just might not survive-her high school class reunion. And as they say, everything pretty much goes south from there. AJ, Ashlyn, Danny, Michael, Six, and Apoc find themselves on the road to Hell. Locusts, horsemen with seriously bad attitudes and even worse skin care regimes, hordes of demons, and Michael's dad, The Michael, are just a few of the funsies they'll have to deal with along the way. Good news is, they have added to their crew. Oh, and AJ has a plan. It's a bad plan, but it just might be the only way to save the ones she loves and a whole lot of others she's just "eh" about. Only one downside: it might cost her everything, including the life that she just started to believe was hers.
In 2008, K.B. Draper discovered a talent for storytelling after drinking a bottle of cheap wine at a Christmas party. One of her equally intoxicated friends said, “You are so freak’n *burp* funny. You should write a book.” The idea stuck and so did a cocktail napkin (in an inappropriate place) but that’s a totally different story. After that, K.B. Draper taught herself to write; which was challenging because she was a bad student and an even worse teacher -- but words started to make sentences, sentences made paragraphs and paragraphs eventually made a story, which came to be her first book, The U-Haul Diary.
The U-Haul Diary is a comedic, loose interpretation (okay, completely one-sided view) of the women she dated who moved in and out of her life (and house). Writing was cheaper than therapy so she continued to tell stories in her stylized rambling humor-- but her second book Close-Up is more of a modern day, will they-won’t they, oh no they didn’t, fantasy series, featuring Kanyon and Daylen, two heroines out to save the world from sin-infused articles and the supernatural bad guys. If you are looking for something a little darker then check out the Demons Series, book 1 Demons Shemons.
K.B. Draper is not a classically trained writer but she fakes it pretty okay and hopefully inspires a few chuckles along the way.
I loved how everyone in the past, present and everything was all tied together. That ending too... wow.
I read Draper's Author's Notes and I would truly love it if she wrote more about Ashlynn, AJ and company. I said it before and I'll say it again... I'd love to be part of this family, reading about them all is the next best thing.
The Third and last installment on Kindle Unlimited.
The action this time in interspersed and not as constant as previous installments. There's quite a bit of waiting around for the end of the world. But this gives us a chance to breathe and check in with our demon hunting, world saving crew!
We travel to AJ's hometown and meet her family. Her loving parents, sister and old best friend. Plus other friends and nemesis from her school years. It was lovely to see her introduce Ashlyn around and really let her into her history and past, and into her heart. Plus Vice Versa. The two are still sweet and hot in equal measure. Ashlyn just gets AJ and AJ adores Ashlyn. They are discussing their future together and what could be in store for them, if the old demon hunting business ever lets up!
There's a lot of hope abounding despite the ever looming apocalypse.
I was a tiny bit conflicted on the actual ending, once we got there. I felt a lot of it didn't necessarily make a lot of sense. So it was a little disappointing, if I'm honest. It's still HEA, but I guess I just expected something different to what we got. But I am still overall entertained and enjoyed our wild ride with the sassy AJ and Ashlyn, plus her rag-tag crew!
SAPPHIC BOOK BINGO: not a romance, unusual job, out of your comfort zone, established couple; Unicorn: period, faith (possibly other categories)
At the beginning of the book, the author stated that this series was intended to be a trilogy, but there could be more in store for AJ and the gang. Many changes and new characters created a potential for more books, and I can't be alone in hoping for that to happen. The 80's and 90's pop culture references, the "cast of characters" of AJ's weapons, her relationships with her gf, friends, and family, and her antihero attitude have all lead to a fantastic series that always gives me several LOL moments.
My reviews of the two books prior to this one go into more details about AJ, but there's a consistency with the goofy and witty good time to be had while enjoying the trilogy.
Oh I would do anything for love, but I won't do that...oops
I think this was another solid book on this "trilogy? (hope not)". I truly didn't think things would circle back the way they did, which was IMO a great way to tie up the story. So much cool/fun stuff happened. I would've loved to learn more of the 'mythology' in more detail, though. But I understand it would drag a story that had a fast pace.
Anyway, the plot is phenomenal, but my favourite bit in these books is AJ's charisma, which is unparalleled. And she was still going 100mph; what an amazing mind she has, hasn't she? The amount of groaning I did with the other characters were out of this world LOL. But she got a goofy smile plastered on my face most of the time, so there is that too. She's chaotic good.
Her gang is very unique, each individual, even if just glimpsing during the whole shebang, added something to the story. Ashley in special, because she keeps AJ on her toes, grounded. I really hope it's not the last we get to see these two, they just fit. And I really wouldn't mind a follow-up on their situation. Pretty please?
I'm not ready to say my goodbyes, this has the potential to give/tell so much more. But if it's truly the case, I don't think it could've ended in any other way. It was an amazing journey and they went out with a bang!
Finally, I think this is the kind of story should be read at least twice. Because the first time AJ takes you for a ride, and what a ride! she keeps people on their toes and so much happens in the story and in her head (I don't say this in a negative way), if you blink you miss it. Then the next read is when you pick on the details you missed the first time because AJ's mouth didn't let you. And, IMHO, it's so worth it. This trilogy is definitely among my all time favourite now and I hope to get my paperbacks very soon.
Apparently shooting Lucifer in certain places is enough to incur his wrath (ignoring Apoc and all of that as well), and his declaration that he's going to come after AJ is more than just mere words.
The cast has grown, more mysteries being added (and revealed), and the action, like the last two, is nothing short of epic. AJ is her usual sass and bad mouthing self (and very protective of those she loves), Ashlyn is sweet and awesome, and Apoc is adorable. The first part of the book is very humorous with the meet the family and reunion, and then of course, when the horseman start to appear, it becomes everything that you'd expect and love about the series.
And really, this is a great conclusion to the trilogy. It's fun, engaging and enjoyable, and it wraps up most things quite well. There are some twists - not entirely unexpected - but it concludes well. Could there be some more books about them? Possibly, but it is also very good just the way it is.
All up a very enjoyable series and worth the read.
Very fun, charming addition to the Draper "Demons" series and a nice way to finish out. I can't really say more than I already have about the author's style and the amazingly well-centered and balanced characters of AJ and Ashlyn, of Michael and Mia, of Dannie, of Sammie, Ariel, and of course, Six (the hellhound) and Apoc (the little half-demon/angel baby). They all compliment and balance each other throughout the story and the ending was satisfying enough to me to be happy with where it ends, but it's also left open enough to where there could be further exploration into this universe and AJ's world. I just really enjoyed it, and after it was all over, I couldn't help but get a visual for the song Hells Bells by AC/DC, in my head, being used as a perfect kind of end credits song.
Having read the first two books in this trilogy, I can safely say Hell’s Bells doesn’t disappoint. It is non-stop-irreverent-snark, just like its predecessors. That’s a feature, folks, not a bug! The book description covers the plot, so no need to reiterate it here. You could read it as a standalone (I think), but why miss out on the hell-arious shenanigans of the first two books? (which were great, btw) If you like your lady heroes with heart, snark, and glowy eyes, AJ Mattox and the gang are here for you. The coming apocalypse has never been so entertaining!
OMG this series has been brilliant. I absolutely loved this last of the series book and really hope Ms Draper changes her mind. AJ & her growing band of good-ish guys take on the ultimate evil in a hilarious fast paced story. Read this series it's brilliant.
This series was pretty good to begin with though by far this book has been my favorite. AJ is hilarious! Adore the banter with all the supporting characters. Fight scenes awesome, Truly hope there will be more to come.
