Osprey Panzer Series
Panzer III
This highly illustrated title details the history of the Panzer III throughout World War II, from its early development in the pre-war years through its pivotal role in the Blitzkrieg campaigns in Poland and Western Europe and its eventual obsolescence on the Eastern Front.
The Panzer III was the mainstay of the German armored force in the early years of World War II, and spearheaded the victories in Poland, Western Europe, and the Balkans. Designed and developed in the mid-1930s, it was originally equipped with a 3.7cm gun and with 30mm thick armor. Early combat in Poland and France saw the need for this to be upgraded, and later models were armed with a 5cm KwK L/42 gun and had the frontal armor reinforced to 60mm by adding extra plating. This later version proved to be particularly effective during the campaigns in the Balkans and against British armor in the North African desert campaign. However, in the first months of Operation Barbarossa -- the German invasion of the Soviet Union -- it became obvious to battlefield commanders that the Panzer III had become obsolete as a main battle tank and it began to be replaced by the Panzer IV as the main front-line battle tank. The Panzer III was relegated to a secondary role, but its chassis proved the basis for the Sturmgeschutz III, which became the most widespread German armored vehicle of World War II.

This is one in a long series of volumes on Second World War German armour. This specific volume examines the development of the Pz III from the pre-war days to the end of its career. It examines the development, then the initial production which is then followed by accounts of the combat in Poland, in France and the further development of the Pz III.
The Pz III in other theatres such as the Balkan invasion, North Africa, Russia are also examined. Finally, the support vehicles derived from the chassis are examined.
Figures of the numbers in each Panzer division's inventory of each year are provided as are production figures.
Like others in the same series, the volume has a few glaring typos, which is disappointing, one would have thought given the numerous typos in earlier volumes in the series, something would have been done about it. Most volumes in the series have a few glaring typos. One does not find them in other Osprey series. Somehow, this series has them.

Jak to zwykle bywa z czołgami, swoją przygodę z książką „Panzer III” autorstwa Thomasa Andersona zaczynamy od takich maszyn jak Vickers Medium czy Renault Ft 17 – czyli od samego początku. Potem dopiero nadjeżdża Panzer III w rozdziale „Prace rozwojowe” i „Początki produkcji” aż do swojej pełnej chwały. Lisioł nie będzie ukrywać, że książka posiada w sobie wiele technicznych szczegółów i jeszcze więcej zdjęć. Można się nawet pokusić o stwierdzenie, że to album zdjęciowy z poszerzonym opisem.

Futrzaka głównie zainteresował rozdział związany z działaniami w Afryce Północnej. Nie ma zaskoczenia, że piasek i silnik nie dogadują się ze sobą, jednak mobilne pole walki ma swoje wymagania. Czasem trzeba po prostu pędzić na złamanie karku! *zapiszczał Lisioł, wciskając gaz do dechy w swoim Panzer III, przejeżdżając pustynny odcinek w pobliżu Trigh al-Abd*. Na zdjęciach panuje oczywiście moda na gołe klaty, idealnie dla Pań.

Gdy do każdego atakującego ugrupowania dołączyły słynne armaty przeciwlotnicze 88 milimetrów (Flak 18/36/37/41) zrobiło się ciekawie, ale tylko w teorii. Rozdział nie zawiera dużej ilości informacji, jest to raczej pobieżne „pogłaskanie” dłonią po szczycie wydmy, niż głębokie zakopanie się w piaskach pustyni. Autor skupia się głównie na czołgu, więc sam front jest sprawą marginalną. Podobnie sprawa ma się z Kampanią w Polsce, inwazją na Bałkany i działaniami na Wschodzie. Przechodzimy więc z czołgiem Panzer III od momentu jego powstania przez czasy dzieciństwa, szkolne, pierwszych zaliczeń aż po sprawdzenie w boju i jego dalsze perypetie. Można powiedzieć, że brakuje tutaj czynnika ludzkiego, ale ten dotyczący maszyny jest całkiem dobrze ogarnięty.

Lisioł może polecić tą pozycję początkującym i fanom samego czołgu. Dla szukających pogłębienia wiedzy, proponowałby bardziej obszerne monografię.

Another outstanding book from Mr Anderson. Read the book back in feb 2022. What does the other reviewer on this page mean that this book has glaring errors ? I didn't spot any......
