As Martin Edwards recommended this book in his monthly leaflet I looked around for a copy and found one in the end at a rare book shop on line so bought the only copy. Written and came out in hardback in 1930 it’s a story of the same time, ain a rich area of London where people go to Wimpoles Turkish Bath regularly to bath there is a murder or two. At 11:30am on 29th December which was a Monday the body of Major Henry Pinder is found dead in the men’s hot room, then a few minutes later in the woman’s hot room Miss Monica Vine is also found dead. Detective-Inspector E.G Ord is told to look into this case after a Mrs Ellen Baldry who was a widow of a policeman called Scotland Yard to investigate her masters dead,DI Ord is called back from his week long Christmas holiday which he has spent at his home in Battersea in London with his wife and 2 children. Their were a lot of people who worked at baths but also the owner and his Daughter to speak too, DI Ord wanted to shut the place down to get on with his investigation but he has to work around the baths being open,as the owner said it was his busy time of the year begin Christmas. After looking around DI Ord then wrote in his notebook these jottings A Mouse found dead near a defective flue probably dead at same time at the man and woman 11:30am. Suspect gas poisoning possible carbon monoxide. For examination please and report back. B Envelope containing metal dust. For analysis please and report back C Envelope containing white dust. For analysis please and report back D Scrap from furnace.Probably utensils can it be identified ? Please report back very early as possible After tales and lies from some of the people who could be involved DI Ord gets to work unraveling the truth and lies to find a killer. I loved this book 1/ because it’s set at a time 1930 where language and setting were them and us, 2/ the story line is easy to follow with the names of people playing a lot within the story.
