Twins Patrick and Mary have been ill, and are sent to recover to Holiday House, by the sea. While there, they use the usual secret passages to uncover a mystery. [Suggest a different description.]
Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.
Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.
Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.
According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.
For bookgroup this month we read our favourite Enid Blyton. So, more than 50 years after I first read it, I picked up 'Holiday House'. A few words now have completely different meanings (queer being the most used). Also, a few mentions of children getting slapped for being naughty! But, the children had so much freedom, climbing rope ladders and exploring caves without an adult in sight. A spiffing little book
Required reading whilst staying in a holiday house. Classic Enid Blyton, twins and their dog are packed off to the holiday house. A mystery unfolds as they explore a ruined house. True to form the dog always barks at the wrong moment !
Another Blyton book with the usual ideas: - Sick kids sent away to another place - the place is by. the beach - they stay in an old house - secret passages - mischief afoot - smugglers They would have got away with it if it wasn't for those meddling kids!!
One of my very favourite Enids. Short but very sweet and an absolutely classic tale of Secret passages, old houses on cliffs, and scummy working class villains.
