When you feel that all is lost, who would you trust? Are you sure? Misplaced Loyalty can prove fatal.
When DC Patsy Hodge transfers to Bristol, she attends an apparent suicide with new boss DI John Meredith. Death was caused by a lethal injection. Could it be an assisted suicide or euthanasia? Meredith calls it murder.
As more victims are discovered the investigation gathers pace, tension mounts within the team, and someone takes an unhealthy interest in Patsy, threatening her life. Now she doesn’t know who to trust.
Misplaced Loyalty is the first book in the Meredith & Hodge series.
Having worked in the property industry for most of her adult life, latterly at a senior level for a corporate agency, Marcia finally escaped in 2010. Whilst she still works as a consultant for several independent agencies, she can now dedicate the bulk of her time to writing and of course reading.
Misplaced Loyalty was her debut novel in published format, and introduced the popular Meredith & Hodge Crime series. In 2017 Marcia published Witness for Wendy the first in the Bearing Witness series. She has also written several stand alone novels.
Marcia is married with two children and lives in Bristol UK. Marcia can be contacted at www.mkturnerbooks.co.uk
What a great shame. This held such promise and I really liked the way she writes BUT........and a huge old but, it's full of mistakes !! Gutted as I'd not have packed it in if not for this. Woman used instead of women, the word stairs emphasised for no reason I could see, the word a missing from sentences more than once, a really irritating habit of putting commas needlessly before conjunctions.....on almost every page yet not adding one where it's needed here-"Patsy followed bringing her up to date". There were no paragraph breaks at the start so it jumped to another place altogether on the next line making it tricky to read yet further in they were needlessly added !! I got to this line only 8% in and sighed, loudly and packed it in...."....perhaps it's just that I'm woman". I just don't understand why anyone goes to the trouble to write what seems to me a good story and then put it out in this mess with no proofreading !! Such a waste. Let's hope it gets revised one of these days and I can try again.
UPDATE-JULY 2017 The author has gifted me a redone version. However, it has lost some of the errors I highlighted above last year but there are still way too many distracting mistakes and I've called time again. A couple of times I was still caught out by the missing paragraph breaks once again....it makes it everso confusing till you realise what's happened !! I looked up the Napoleon and Josephine mention and I was lost. I don't get the reference to them !! I was baffled too when Frankie mentioned lipstick as it hadn't been referred to before. I scrolled back to see. I did the same when Meredith was gratified to see a folder left where Patsy had said it would be....when ?? For some reason cork screw had a needless space but further down the same page it was written properly. There were still too many places where commas weren't used correctly so the sentences read peculiarly....like "Meredith withdrew his hand a look of disdain on his face" or "Thanks we will" and finally, when I gave up again-"But the husband left her well off I'm told"...such a shame but really, someone proofreading should pick these grammatical and spelling errors up. If I spot them surely THEY can !! It ruins a story altogether as I find I'm just waiting for the next error to hit me in the face and I'm totally distracted from the story itself. I did wonder at Patsy's behaviour.....one minute she's out with Frankie and the same night she's hankering after another chap...not terrific behaviour. I found her boss to be a bit of a lech as well !! I did try, Marcia, honestly. Thankyou for this version but I'd sack your editor !!
I have a love-hate relationship with this book mainly because it started out boring and it didn't really catch me until about after 35% of the way through. Things got really interesting and a lot clearer in this mystery.
A string of apparent suicides complete with suicide notes and paid for funeral arrangements are not exactly as they seem. The suicides are a complete surprise to their loved ones and they seem too clear-cut and too neat. It is up to Hodge, Meredith and Jennings to figure out exactly what happened in these cases as more past suicides that fit the bill are discovered and new bodies are dropping as well.
The characters were fun and interesting. I enjoyed the dynamic between Hodge and Meredith (that’s a last name, his first name is John). I really liked the progression of their relationship. The investigation moves forward and this puts Patsy Hodge in the killer’s crosshairs. She receives threats, strange things seem to happen around her and she fears for her safety. Now she has a stalker to worry about and her suitor, Frankie, who doesn’t quite receive hints well. Plus, her boss, Meredith breaks his ankle. This is when she moves in with Meredith, which just angers her stalker even more. The chain of events afterwards were exciting and we didn’t know what would happen next. Due to the nature of the case and the title of the book, I was suspicious of some of the characters that actually worked in and around law enforcement as well. You just never know where evil lurks. Misplaced Loyalty was equal parts fun and suspense.
At 526 pages, the sheer length of this book is daunting. But once I started reading, I became intrigued with the mystery and decided to persevere. By the time I’d gotten through 20% of the story, I was confused by the plethora of characters, many of whom seemed to have the same or very similar names. I went back to the beginning and took notes on the characters, something I have never done before. (Usually my memory for names and characters is good.) There is a Laura, a Linda, and a Lisa. Worse than that, I found two Joes, a Joseph, and Jo. One of the police officers is Joe Collins, and one of the victims is Harry Collins. Even after going back and re-reading these parts, I could not figure out the relationship between the two. If they were not related, why did no one on the police force point out this coincidence? Why would the author give two characters the same last name if they are not related? Checking into the hospital emergency is a little boy named Rory with a rock stuck in his ear. On the same page, the nurse hands a registration form to Tom. What happened to Rory, and who is Tom? It isn’t explained. Police officer Seaton’s wife or girlfriend is named Sarah, as we learn when he is called away from her on Christmas day. In the same chapter, Frankie also winds up with a new girlfriend named Sarah. At first I believed these to be the same person. But since there was no rivalry between the two men over Sarah, I had to conclude there must be two Sarahs. Neither Seaton nor Frankie commented on this coincidence. During the tense climactic scene where people are held at gunpoint, the villain is captured, and he confesses, a woman named Jan is suddenly in the room with the others. The author never explains who Jan is, how or when she entered the room, why no one notices she's there, or why Seaton decides to put his arm around her.
Besides the confusion of names, there are a number of sudden and confusing shifts in point of view. There are many, many typos. There are misplaced words and rogue punctuation marks. I found one paragraph that appeared in two different places, word for word. While the mystery itself has merit, this book needs some serious editing. If it were trimmed to half its length, with half as many characters (each with their own unique name, please) it would be worth five stars. As it is, I can only give it three.
Detective Patsy Hodge, on the run from a crappy relationship, takes a new job with the CID in Bristol, England. Her scary, crabby, but handsome and brilliant boss, John Meredith, takes a liking to her and brings her in on a puzzling case where all the victims died by lethal injection – it could be assisted suicide or euthanasia, or maybe even murder.
Along the way, Patsy fights her growing attraction to Meredith (as he fights his to her), acquires a stalker and sows discord because some on the team believe she is moving up so fast because she’s doing it on her back.
I’m very fond of English police procedurals and this one did not disappoint. I liked the budding relationship between Patsy and Meredith, and the relationships between the team members. I thought I’d figured out the villain mid-way through, but I was wrong, and the action-packed ending was a surprise.
This story was so good I purchased book 2 and immediately read it (I generally try to space out my series reading, but I was just so intrigued by the characters, I wanted to know what happened next.) I now have book 3 queued up. This series has really caught my fancy.
I have literally just finished reading this and the story itself is good. However, the execution, for me was lacking. It felt very much a chick-lit with a love triangle, with two guys chasing a girl. In itself that is okay, just not for me. There was too much shall I or shan't I, or is that because it has been too long since I dated?
As a whodunit it worked. I only worked out who did it about half a page before the big reveal. Which is great. Although I thought the reasons why they did it was weak.
I was hoping for an enthralling thriller but all I got was a Mills and Boon type romance loosely tied into a police station. I even checked the publication date as the male chauvinism and extreme sexism felt like it was written circa 1970. OMG and the number of times people either “grinned” or “smirked” was like fingernails down a blackboard. Not for me.
I have to say I really enjoyed this book. I loved the characters, enjoyed the story line and was a little shocked at who the murder was. I am really looking forward to the next book.If you enjoy a good mystery you will not be disappointed... Highly recommend!
( Format : Audiobook ) "I might be a bloke but I still feel pain." At almost fifteen hours, this is a long book but one that holds the reader's attention throughout. Misplaced Loyalty is a British police procedural set in Bristol, where a rash of apparent suicides seem to have a common element: death by a lethal morphine injection. They could well be assisted suicides, illegal, yes, but often compassionate, until some of the bodies have bruising suggestive of not being a death desired by the victim. The investigation is led by DI John Meredith, a good detective but with less than admirable attributes, hard drinking and overly fine of the younger ladies and greatly admired by his colleague, Tanya Jennings. His team had recently been joined by very capable and upwardly mobile Patsie Hodge who, to Tanya's disgust, seemingly had attracted his attention in more than a professional capacity. All of the characters are fully functioning, fleshed out people, very real, if somewhat annoying at times. And their stories run alongside the pursuit of the case, with Christmas thrown in as a bonus. The story is intriguing with various red herrings laid down to distract both police and reader, with an ending which was most unexpected. Narration throughout by Lee Beddow is good: no fieworks, just good, solid delivery, nicely paced and intoned, and with character voice definition. He is pleasant to hear and has clear renunciation making his reading easily understood. A nice, solid performance.
I very much enjoyed this book, the first in a series of Meredith and Hodge mysteries, and look forward to reading more. I was very fortunate in being freely gifted with a complimentary copy of Misplaced Loyalty, at my request, by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. M.K.Taylor has now been added to my list of authors to watch for in the future and I can recommend this to all who enjoy British police procedural with well developed personalities in the writing. And fans of the who-dun-it? This is a!so a romance, and I personally usually dislike this; but it was far from being of the smootchy kind : this one was fun. A good read. And a striking cover.
The book begins with the death of a critically ill little girl. As the pain becomes unbearable she begs her mother to "Make it stop, Mummy, you're a doctor". With her parents and young brother lovingly gathered around her, her mother tearfully grants her request.
Fast forward eighteen years. DC Patsy Hodge is a recent transfer to a rather boring position in Bristol, serving under DI John Meredith. Things start looking up when they respond to a suicide that has raised the suspicions of the police surgeon. He has noticed similarities with other cases that may indicate that the suicide victim was “assisted”, perhaps against their will.
A disturbing pattern soon emerges that has the entire department involved in the case with some off-hour involvement between Meredith and Hodge.
The book is a well written mystery that ends with a cliff-hanger. I am not fond of cliff-hangers but it was still a good book. The story line is suspenseful and the plot twists kept it interesting.
After reading an advanced copy of book 8 which I thoroughly enjoyed I thought it best to start right at the beginning and picked up Misplaced Loyalty. Here we meet Meredith and Hodge as they first start working together, learning about their quirks and personalities. With a serial killer on the loose making deaths appear suicides, bodies stacking up and historical deaths coming to light as possibly involved this is a roller coaster ride of twists and turns. Crime/thriller with a bit of romance chucked into the mix. Then to cap it all we are left on a cliffhanger!! Now to download book 2 to get the next fix! I highly recommend the Meredith and Hodge series from the 2 I have already read. If you are looking for a new author take a chance on Marcia she won't disappoint you.
I really enjoyed this mystery. It has everything you could want... Suspense, twists and turns... Lots of action! There wasn't a dull moment! And... A really nice romance that kept you guessing too!!! This was the first book I have read by Marcia and I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series. I like that the main characters are not portrayed as being perfect but as every day people with their little foibles just like the rest of us! There is some humor and banter woven in amongst the mystery that is very amusing and I got a big kick out of it! I highly recommend you give this book a try!!!!!!
This was my first M. K. Turner book and thought the premise was very good....actually a nice relief from all the gruesome serial killer mysteries so popular now. The Meredith and Hodge characters were well developed if somewhat unbelievable....do think the story could have benefited greatly from a lot less of their relationship issues with more emphasis on the police investigation and procedures. This is an easy fast read. Struggled between three stars ("average") and four ("very good"), ultimately decided to upgrade it to four only because yeah, I would like to read the next book in the Meredith and Hodge series.
Loved, loved the story. Has me guessing throughout the story of two cops merredeth, who runs the murder dept. And hodge, one of his team member who helps him investigate and solve crime, one of the best crime story I've read . It has such a twist to it, that I thought who the serial killer was, but, was surprised by the outcome. It was superbly well written. I recommend this series to anyone who likes crime caper, I'm on to next seri e of hodge and merredeth.
A great intro to this series and a thoroughly good story. At first I was dubious about the narrator as the female characters all seemed to have that over the top girlish-simpering-silly speech pattern that some male narrators give them but either it settled down later on or I got used to it, not sure which.
Anyway, I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next in the series to see how the characters and their relationships develop.
I loved this book! It was really well written, and the characters were engaging and complex. I loved the dynamic between Meredith and Hodge and the development of their relationship. The storyline was quite dark in places, however it was fun to read. I did not guess the ending which I found surprising but not ridiculous. I am really looking forward to reading the next one.

Well this is another new author for me like her writing main characters well written good plot .i have just learned there is another six in the series can't wait to read them.M K Turner is now on my preferred authors list
Thoroughly enjoyed this book it has depth of characters and a great story line. Have now downloaded the next book from this author, following the story line. Get this book! You will not be disappointed! 🤗
A solid crime/mystery with a bit of romance. There were a couple of twists at the end which made things very interesting although I did find the 'surprise' villain a cliche as this type of character is, more often than not, the culprit in the end. I liked the main characters and I look forward to listening to the rest of the series.
Reading this story is like being part of their team. It was a great story that is tied to the next story in the series. The end was unexpected but tied into the events very well. This was an enjoyable read. Thanks
Very good book. Looking forward to reading the rest of this series. Had me guessing right up to the end then there was a twist on the last page! Not good to have a stalker and a murder after you.
Slow read to begin with and couldn't decide to stay with it but glad I did as the story had lots of twists and turns. Great read in the end and thinking of getting the next in the series.
M K Turner created a novel with all kinds of suspense and the fun part is it is a police crime procedural and it's full of amorous pursuits. This is a page turner..there is not a dull moment in this novel. It is full of twists that make the end a surprise and I should known moment. The characters are amazing. There are lots of strong personalities both male and female which is refreshing and part of what keeps the action moving a the nice pace it does through this novel.
This was a really good book.It got a bit long and confusing, but I enjoyed it.There were maybe a bit too many grins happening between Meredith and Hodges. Narration by Lee Beddow was excellent.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.'
This is my kind of mystery. I like the fact that the killer was not obvious all the way through. The ending was a bit hurried but all in all a good read.
