Feeder

Rate this book
When the veil is lifted, there are no boundaries.

Feeders are taught to do three things. Always eat what they are told. Never disobey. Lastly, never remove their veil. After all, who wants to look a lamb in the face before they eat of its flesh?

Ophelia Tamsin has been groomed most of her life to be a feeder. It means a guaranteed early retirement with plenty of pay...well, almost guaranteed. When Ophelia is chosen by a devilishly handsome lord to be his personal blood bank, she expects her life to get easier. All she has to do is live in a fancy mansion, fill her master's cup when he needs it filled, and enjoy her new luxuries. But Kieryn isn't like other vampires and his tastes extend far beyond the flesh.

Kieryn Phrost has always been indifferent toward the new vampire traditions that separate them from their human predecessors. After carelessly picking a feeder just to shut his loud-mouthed brother up, he finds himself strangely drawn to his veiled new pet. He knows that feeders are groomed only for taste, but when he drinks from her, he finds that he can experience much more. Ophelia Tamsin makes him feel dangerously alive and soon he finds himself yearning for so much more than blood.

If you like tall, dark, and handsome, you'll love this dark romance. This book contains strong sexual content and some vampire-style violence. There's no cheating and a guaranteed HEA.

I was born on a teeny tiny island in the middle of the ocean to two amazing and adventurous parents. When we moved to the mainland, I was raised on an ostrich ranch in rural Arizona where learned about hard work and responsibility. I attribute my determination to my upbringing and loved the adventures of my younger years. Myself and my siblings schooled in the city, a one hour commute each way.
I majored in theatre then immediately moved on to college when I was 17 pursuing fashion and costume design. I graduated during the recession and couldn't find work, so depression got me until I found the cosplay community and opened up again with both a social life and a creative drive.
Through ALL of this, I was writing in my spare time. From the moment I could draw really sloppy letters on a page, I was creating stories and it became something I did to relieve stress and cope with life changes. At 17, I finished my first novel at 160,000 words (it since got lost in many crashed computers and moves) But since then I have been writing like a mad woman and finally published in 2019. I have no plans of stopping.

The story was around 3.5 or 4 stars.
The smut was a generous 1 star. The words slit, mound, folds, milking should never be used in smut. Ever.

Slow Burn
Spice: 🔥🔥

This is a really good, slow seductive gothic vampire story. Very eerie feeling, and it very much has some horror vibes to it. For being a novella I feel like there was some really good world building and character depth. Would have loved to know more of Kieryn’s story, but overall the characters were great.

Ophelia is a Feeder, someone that is groomed in this society to not exist for any other reason than to feed vampires. They are to eat and drink what would make their blood more appealing and to remain quiet and emotionless. That’s it, that’s all they exist for. She is acquired by Kieryn and right away there is some good tension between the two amongst some vampire family drama. Just overall a good solid read. Second book I’ve read from this author and just love her writing style.

As this is a novella, I was pleasantly surprised by the ability of the author to portray such character depth. This slow burn romance was done just right, it did allow the pair to get to know each other and what started as a mere business arrangement turned into something much more important - a reason to continue living.

This is a harsh world, where women like Ophelia have been trained to obey, remain silent and serve their purpose: be the perfect blood source for vampires. The idea of being stripped of any identity is incomprehensible to me, but the fact is that be it amongst human kind or supernaturals, when those with power decide to enforce their will, nothing is stopping them from subjecting those less fortunate to cruelty and suffering.

Unlike other feeders, the FMC is different, she has not lost touch with herself. Likewise, Kieryn differs from other vampires as he does not share the same viciousness. This tentative romance that blooms between them surprises both, but what really stood out here was Kieryn's ability to give Ophelia something she has never had before- the freedom to make a choice. I loved him for that and frankly that did seal the deal for me as I really liked this short story.

This was my first Courtney Leigh book and I have to admit, I thoroughly enjoyed it. This author put a unique spin on the Vampire/human hierarchy that grabbed my attention and had me flipping through the pages, completely enthralled with the storyline and the romance in this dark, gothic tale. The way this author described each scene, using words that would allow the reader to use each of our senses to feel and experience each moment of the story. From the lust to the violence, everything had a reason, each action held a purpose, and we were given what was necessary to move the story along. There was no rushing this one. This story was perfectly paced, the characters multi-dimensional, and the romance/lust off-the-charts!

I loved this story and look forward to the next one. Well done!

Oh, my. 🥵

It’s only 160 pages but lawd, please and thank you. If your kink is tension-wrought glances and sexually charged silences, boy, do I have a story for you. It’s like watching Louis de Pointe du Lac and Jane Eyre make gothic, smutty love. Who knew white-knuckled restraint and bone-deep longing could look this good? 🤯 Here are all my stars, girl. Whew.

Loved it!

This was an absolutely amazing read. The experience the characters go through. The emotion and reactions were excellent. The ending was absolutely beautiful.

Dark Indeed?

Four stars because of the spelling errors. Too easy to run editing software these days to avoid missteps. Otherwise, there is something eerie about being referred to as an 'it' instead of a 'person.' About being bred and raised to satisfy vampiristic needs. And it's that level of eerie along with love betrayal and hot vampire sex all mixed together which make for a staying read!

Amazing! I started this last night and couldn’t put it down until I looked at the time!! I’ve been loving books with Sexual tension build up, and let me tell you, THIS WAS IT! Descriptive scenery, taste, and feeling. Like come on. I was literally watching this all in my head like a movie. Great writing. Easy to read. I need me a man like Kieryn. 🥀 BOOK #2 here I come😎

I'm not sure if this is considered a novella, but it felt like a very fun, dark, vampy novella. It would have been fun to have a longer book that explored the political climate and environment of this urban fantasy, but as it was, it was fun exploring unexpected romance in a society run by vampires (some of whom had lost their humanity long ago or never had any to begin with).

In a world where you're either a vampire or the humans who serve them as a meal, courtesan, or hired help, Ophelia considers herself lucky to be a feeder - a veiled, walking blood bag on the same level as cattle. Feeders aren't allowed a past, they suppress all emotions and personality, and exist to serve their vampires. If they're fortunate enough to live to retirement age, they're set up to live the rest of their lives in relative comfort.

Overall, Feeder was fine. The story needed an editor's touch though. There were inconsistencies, like she's already on the desk when he throws her on the desk, or she thinks about how There are a lot of grammar mistakes and issues with homonyms ("ween" himself of her blood, people "shuttering" instead of shuddering, "dawning" a wine-red suit, "plumb" purple, etc.) as well as lines like, "I fell to sleep." In two instances, she spends over 24 hours before walking into her new bathrooms - doesn't she ever need to pee? Kieryn's eyes are described as "mint-blue," then "silver-blue." Just things that could've been fixed with an editor. I can imagine self-publishing might make a great beta-reader hard to find without splashing out a lot of cash, which might be prohibitive, but it really does make a difference in the quality of the finished product.

Vampire novella
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️.25

Tropes:
• vampires 🧛
• humans treated as lesser beings/hierarchy
• lord/feeder 🩸
• dark-ish romance ❤️‍🔥
• gothic vibes 🖤
• broody mmc 🥀

Triggers:
• blood - and lots of it🩸
• graphic violence 👊🏼
• traumatic pasts

Ophelia has been trained her entire life to serve as a feeder, a role that promises a lucrative early retirement. However, when she's chosen by the captivating Lord Kieryn to be his personal blood source, she quickly realizes that her new life won't be as simple as she expected. Kieryn's tastes are far more complex than those of other vampires, and Ophelia must navigate a world of luxury and darkness.

This book is a beautifully entertaining and quick read, boasting a unique take on the vampire genre. The gothic-like written story features great characters, and the interactions between Ophelia and Kieryn are particularly enjoyable, with their relationship developing in such a poetically lovely way.

Courtneys unique take on the vampire/human hierarchy was captivating, drawing me in with its dark, gothic atmosphere and romance. The descriptive language was vivid, allowing me to immerse myself in each scene, and the pacing was perfectly balanced, with multi-dimensional characters and a romance that was both intense and believable. The story was well-crafted, with each action serving a purpose, and I appreciated the author's restraint in not rushing the narrative but keeping it as a novella.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and can’t wait to read book 2. I only wished it was not a novella! I would’ve loved a full length story and more backstory and story building. I think that the romance and relationship between fmc and mmc could’ve been built up more over time. There were also a few spelling mistakes - but this was still an absolutely amazing read.

I LOVED this. It's so hard to get me hooked on a vampire story, but this got me. I loved the society with humans and vampires knowing about each other and humans getting jobs as feeders for the "lords." And i loved all the strange traditions and rules associated with the hierarchy. I couldn't stop reading. Ophelia is such a gentle girl and Kieryn is so suave. one of those "I'm hot but i could rip your head off if i wanted" types. And I LOVED the concept with the blood and how different vampires taste it or experience it. I could see this being a really big universe and i hope it will be.

This was a good story. It was tender and sweet, and dark and deadly.. I'm still thinking about it days after reading it. I usually find that is a mark of a good story. I must admit, I did have issues with word usage such as gate instead of gait.. happened a few times too many.

A woman trained to be a feeder, and a vampire who throws those rules right out the window. Works for me! I enjoyed this enough that I went and bought the second story.

Unexpected

I enjoyed this immensely, but it was not what i expected. This is a dark and haunting story with quite a bit of violence and gothic horror. It's a slow burn and there's no "cute love" whatsoever. This is a darker, slower story of possession and humanity and learning what makes life so. An interesting take.

Nice read

Pretty decent story, could have been built out longer. Writer definitely could have moved this setup into a series. Great steam. Pretty decent conflict. I am more of an multiple view points in 1st person but this kept me engaged. Good job!

An interesting take on Vampires

This was an interesting lesson on old ways having something to offer, in this case taking directly from the vein. Quite bloodthirsty in parts and lacking a little of sensual tension between the main characters this was a good read.

Rich Bitter Sweet Chocolate

I so enjoyed this book! It’s a different take on vampires and where the humans are basically sorted out by their beauty or the type of life they had lived in order to be ranked at what position they are destined to be in to serve the vampires.

For a quick read it was good. Some of the scenes/story felt forced. The story idea was great but I would have liked a little more build up/back story. There were also a couple of spelling mistakes.

It seemed like this could have been the rough draft of the book rather than the final product.

Okay

This was a decent quick read.. Definitely not one of your normal vampire type books to read which is fabulous..

The way the author writes this story you feel as you are there with the characters.. The way the smells, colors, scenes, and actions are described.

DNF at 56%.

Kindle clean-out review:

Wavering between 2 to 3 stars. Others may enjoy it, but I vaguely recall feeling frustrated by it. A different feeling to maybe I'm not in the right mood or season in my life DNF. Most likely too navel-gazing, too nice of a hero, and not much action.

Liked the story itself but hated it was so short. I would have loved a full length story to build more of the characters and their relationships.
