In this volume we picked up right where we left off and also closed the first arc of the story. Now we enter a new arc and get a bit of backstory on Musica and Elie as well.

So volume 3 picks up where Volume 2 left off, right in the middle of the battle between Haru, the rave master, and Lance, the beast master.

I'll try not to give too many spoilers in this one. To keep it short Haru ultimately defeats Lance. Although for awhile it is kinda iffy. Plus we get to see why the younger Musica is the head of his gang.

After a short recovery Elie and Haru set off to find the missing Raves.

While Musica leaves their ensemble, they are joined by Griffon, a cart driver, and his horse, who Elie has hired to take them north. The volume ends with them reaching Ska. A village that hasn't seen the sun in over 5 years, and the rain is thought to be being caused by the Thunder Man, another Demon Card member.

Ok. That was good right? Not too many spoilers?

As for how I felt about this volume itself. I am interested in where the story is going, I like how the author has brought different characters together. I'm especially interested in seeing in the future if some characters return for another appearance. I also think that some of the characters are quite funny. Especially Elie and Haru, and how they react to different situations. For example even though Haru is on a quest to recover the Raves and defeat the Demon Card in the process, he isn't always serious. He doesn't seem to worry too much about anything. (Except when it comes to saving his friends) I also love Plue, I think he is adorable.

I'm not that in love with some of the graphics though. While a lot of the frames are very detailed, they seem rather smooshed. As well as the fact that some of the frames that are less detailed are sometimes hard to figure out. I mean I know it is a fight scene, but it isn't always clear what is going on. This volume also seemed to fly by compared to the other two. While I know there was going to be a cliffie of some sort, I didn't expect it to come so soon.

However I still am interested in finding out what will happen in the next volume so I definitely will be picking up volume 4 soon.

All the manga tropes continue piling up. This book has the "pervert who wants to watch the girl in the hot springs" trope. Compared to the last two books this one is just wrapping up the last storyline and then ramping up for the next one. Kind of a weird set of chapters to package together because while the story they tell is necessary, it makes this book on its own kind of dull. The story was originally serealized, so maybe that has a factor in the pacing. I think at this point you're either into the story of the RAVE MASTER vs DEMON CARD or you're not, so you're moving on to Vol 4 or have already quit.

I will say that this has a lot of the same feel as Fairy Tail. With this being the series made by Hiro Mashima prior, you see the early work and it is enjoyable to see the growth of a author/artist. That said, I do feel that if I could go back in time, I would read this series first. It is fun but in almost every way (so far) seems like Fairy Tail "Lite". Still...very enjoyable and a quick read. The art is getting better each volume, and this story jumps right in where volume 2 ended. Action, hot springs and compelling characters makes it a solid volume.

I am a big fan of the younger musica. I really do hope we see more of him and his three eyebrow piercings. Also being a silverclaimer sounds really cool. Elie reminds me of Nami from one piece. Including her choice of outfits, her personality, and really her character design. Like she looks like what nami looked like in the early op manga days. Who’s copying who here?

"I WILL SHOW YOU BLUE SKIES!"

We're still in the early stage of the manga, during which time we won't get to see anything really big, but we're steadily getting there. We have a preemptive appearance by Sieg, so shit's getting close to going down. Oh, and of course that means we're getting slightly closer to learning more about Elie, which is a very important part of the story.

More importantly: Griff and the "horse" have entered the manga!

The close of the Punk Street arc ends in a way reminiscent of One Piece, but I'm unsure if enough time has really passed to justify saying Mashima was influenced by Oda, what with Oda's series having only been around for a year or two. Anyway, what I mean is the resolution of the mystery between both Musicas reminds me of the way side-characters are developed by the end of island-based story-arcs in One Piece (though I know Hamrio will return shortly as a main cast member here...). There's also a more pronounced Dragon Ball influence, I think, both in terms of some monster design (Lance's dragon-illusion resembles Toriyama's dinosaurs, as does the giant monster that attacks Elie later when she's walking back to Punk Street), but also... Haru summons a tent from an item that functions like Hoi Poi Capsules.

Lance pulling out a fuckin' Gate of Babylon with the beast heads, but... a few years before Fate/Stay night even came out....

Hiro Mashima, Rave Master, vol. 3 (Tokyopop, 2000)

Volume 3 picks up where volume 2 left off, with Haru trying to figure out which Musica is which before Demon Card manages to spoil everything, and a big fight brewing. No surprise there. When the fallout settles, Haru's got himself a traveling group, a guide, and an idea of where the first rave stone might be, and so it's off into the wilds. Good stuff, and now that Mashima's toned down the silly dialect, it's getting to be a lot of fun again. ****

This book was very weird. And I mean very weird. There is a cute little snowman that one of them keeps as a pet. Who doesn't want a little snowman as a pet.

These three teens need to get off this strange island. Haru the leader needs to find his sword creator. But all of a sudden this barges in saying killed the sword creators family. Which gets you thinking is he dead or alive.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes anime/manga. Or anyone you likes action books. I like anime/manga so this book stood out to me. The third one leaves you off on a cliff hanger which I do not like.

And it keeps getting better.
I think this was one of the first mangas I've ever read, and I didn't remember it so effing catchy - and even, it is really good. Although the drawings are a little kind of bad.

Eli was looking important and useful for about three minutes and then the volume ended.
Otherwise Musica is the best and I'm glad we have our edgy second main character in our shounen. He's just punk Zoro from One Piece but I'm 100% all for that and I dig his tattoo.

This was a much better follow-up volume to the previous one.

I enjoyed the character development and the well-paced plotline. I'm keeping this review simple for now - but its really good to see Hiro Mashima tackle some harder emotions eg: Long lost family and freedom of choice - along with 'Just War' and 'Thou shalt not Kill' but in a more approachable manner which you can almost immediately relate to in context of the plot.

This volume provides Rave with the much needed diversity of ethos that made the anime what it was. Here's to hoping the rest of the Volumes carry the same tone and balance :-)
