This is an exceptionally well-done volume on the history of stage magic by current day stage magician-legend David Copperfield. Copperfield’s life has revolved around magical illusions. He has great reverence and respect for the pioneering magicians who created new illusions and who became legendary performers in their day (Howard Thurston, Harry Blackstone, Harry Houdini et al).
Copperfield has dedicated himself to creating a museum of magic and magicians. To that end he has purchased or acquired the stage props, stage effects, personal papers, and personal libraries of many legendary magicians. Each of this book’s chapters introduces a different performing magician who somehow advanced the magic art. The authors selected beautiful period photographs of the magicians to accompany the mini-bios of each performer.
Between the photos and the accompanying text, the authors have packaged a most esoteric form of amusement into a beautiful volume of truly enlightening reading.
Best of all, Copperfield does not demean himself or his art by giving away the secrets to any of the illusions highlighted in this volume. Two thumbs up to the authors! My rating: 7.25/10, finished 4/21/26 (4038).
