The rake she cannot forget...

Too small to be seen with the naked eye

The author repeatedly uses the words “tiny”, “little”, and “small” to describe the fmc. She also uses the same terms to describe a 5-yo child. Then she moves on to “dainty”; “thin”, and ”giggle” - as in the fmc just laughs and laughs and laughs and laughs and laughs. The plot centers around real time carriage rides across England. And it takes exactly as long as one would assume. What the author never gets around to is why anyone likes any of these characters or why they like each other. She’s rich and hot. He’s also hot. It must be love!

Did anyone else feel like this was a poor version of the Devil in Winter? Nope? Just me..? The bargain marriage, Evie, road trip, inheritance, etc etc? I swear I kept thinking that it felt too familiar and similar to my favourite Devil!

Holy guacamole this is good! Evie’s been in love with Gabriel, the most notorious rake in London, for years. Her guardians are horrid creatures who are trying to steal her title and inheritance, either through a forced marriage or something more dispicable. Evie makes a bargain with Gabriel for a marriage of convenience and they head off to Scotland to elope….and then things just take off from there. There are thugs, robbers and physical altercations, with arson, poison and a duel thrown in for good measure. Through out it all, Evie and Gabriel must deal with their emotional and physical attraction to each other. This story is way too good to put down! Gabriel is ridiculously adorable and so perfect for Evie, who is a vulnerably strong and courageous lady. You will not only find adventure, danger, romance and humor in this book, but the steamy scenes will knock your socks off! Even if you have not read the other books in this series, do not miss this one!

The Kindle Unlimited offerings always have that dollar store bargain feel to them. I got a free trial once again for whatever reason (I think because I bought a new Kindle) and was tempted by the endless bodice rippers on offer. It's like catnip to me but I haven't read a truly satisfying one in I don't know how long.

Here the premise is this:

She's in love with him but he's a notorious rake She proposes a marriage of convenience that will benefit them both. Of course, instead they will fall in love and have lots of hot sex.

It technically ticks all my boxes but it didn't work. All I remember from it is that they spent a lot of time in carriages going up and down England.

A Bargain with the Rake, by Sadie Bosque. This love story has wonderful moments to it. I found myself reacting to some juicy parts of the story as well. Most parts of the story the writer states that the couple laughs a lot. Other parts are when the Gabriel and Evie constantly are in some sort of wreck or put out from an in.
Some points in the story I wondered if they have made to their destination. Also, I know they laughed at all that has happened, but a point there would be some anger at the predicaments. The writer focuses the story on Gabriel and Evie. Together the two go through unimaginable adversities to find their way to one another. The book does have moments that I think are humorous and adds entertainment to the story.
There a few action moments that are said in detail, giving my imagination a thrill. The steam level could be rated as simmering, which is good.

A huge thank you to the author for gifting me an ebook ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A Bargain with the Rake is the third book in the Necessary Arrangements historical romance series, and I am a huge fan of the series. Each book can be read individually as a standalone but having read all of them I love how the characters intersect and love that old faces pop up in each new book!

This particular book is one I’ve been dying to read ever since I first met the two main characters – Evie and Gabriel - as side characters in an earlier book. I knew I loved them from that small glimmer and Sadie did not disappoint.

I completely adored the story and have to say this is probably my favourite of the series so far (though I do love them all!). I loved the concept of this desperate bargain made and the resulting wild adventure that Evie and Gabriel end up on. I won’t say much about the adventure as I don’t want to spoil it for you but suffice to say It was very entertaining with a lot happening on their trip including passionate interludes, unexpected rainstorms, and some eventful situations with hired brigands!

Evie was a delightful character that brings joy even through the hard times she lights up the page and I adored her interactions with Gabriel. They are not only hilarious, flirty, and bold but they are both so free. I really loved that Gabriel couldn’t care less about causing scandal and that Evie herself was courageous and less hampered by society's expectations than the average historical romance heroine. Gabriel was outrageous, hilarious, and unfalteringly real and adorable when it comes to Evie and their adventure. All the teasing was perfection and every moment of interruption or unfinished business had me nearly as frustrated as the characters!

Evie’s history was a breath of fresh air from the usual upbringings of girls of the ton and their venture into polite society. I felt that Evie’s story really brought such a fresh twist and I adored watching her journey from the moment she introduced the idea of the bargain to the end of the book with seeing how their romance all played out. Not only was the romance amazing but the storyline that made the bargain necessary was intriguing and kept me hooked in seeing how that would unravel. I thought there was a good deal of twist in the second half of the book and I thoroughly enjoyed the added layers of intrigue on top of the romance.

Overall, I loved every minute of this book and devoured the book start to finish with no breaks as I couldn’t put it down! I love that Bosque manages to make each book so unique, with each couple and their story being such a different tale with very different feelings evoked. This was another amazing read from Bosque and as always, I’d highly recommend picking up this book and series for a delicious slow-burn historical romance with guaranteed happily ever after - the angst in the run-up is painfully amazing! I can’t wait for her next book! I don’t know how I’ll cope with the waiting!

Will he be able to turn his back to his carefree attitude for only one woman...

After the last book, needless to say I was much curious about Evie’s story.
And it was quite a journey.
I love when the characters get to really know about the other with the same pace as their era went. Things took time, and while they both are acquainted with the other, it is far different to spend days and days in close quarters.
Evie has loved Gabriel for years, but what means does she have to attract an unredeemable rake. Yet, she has the right insensitive, money now he had been cut from his father’s allowance.
She is young woman with an unconventional upbringing, yet it does not shaped a wallflower but a kind and feisty lady who leaves no one walking on her. She is the sole master of her life and is determined to put it to act.
And while she can’t have Gabriel’s heart, she will contente herself with his name and a travesty of a friendship.
Gabriel is the product of his breeding and schooling, by having been neglected by his sire and bullied by older and stronger boys. It made him this careless selfish rogue. He visits half of the ton bedrooms and sees nothing wrong with it. Until his last tryst was the last straw for his father. So Evie’s offer turns at the right time. Plus what could go wrong to wed an attractive kind duchess.
In fact everything as soon she stirs sensations and emotions which make his rethink their deal.

So what began as a bargain turns into a discovery trip.
They will travel to far border of the country then back to the city to go out in the countryside and back. Their romance is full of twists and turns, a moving explorational road trip where they will tour their deepest feelings and inner thoughts.
One which will change them for the better but also leave them vulnerable.
This is no insta love tale, even if Evie is already in love with Gabriel, her feelings had years to develop and take root. When for Gabriel it is an admiration which morphs to something deeper he can’t name as he never ever came across these kind of sentiments.
The ups and downs in their relationship are what sucked me to this story, despite all her accomplishments, Evie is not perfection comes to life. She has her flaws and failing, controlling her every act and move, turning her husband down. Yet if she had not been so difficult to catch, would Gabriel been so attracted to her. And Gabriel with his excesses and behaviors wounds her every time they cross a woman’s path. As a perfect rake for years, difficult to strip of his spots, yet slowly his bride-to-be soften his regard about her. Realizing this woman is a conundrum he wants to solve.

Controlling Her Own Future . . .

This story is uplifting, especially because the main female character in this historic period is not a typical manipulated and controlled piece of meat at the mercy of the men in her life. Evie actually has a strong will and a brain and is quite a capable young lady!

Evie Montgomery, the Duchess of Somerset, is determined to marry for love, despite the plotting around her to take advantage of her by forcing marriage and stealing her wealth. She has loved Gabriel, the Viscount St. Clare and a notorious rake, for years. But the timing is now opportune for her to make him an offer. Since his father has had all he can take of his son’s rakish ways and cut off his funds, he could use an influx of money.

The last thing Gabriel ever thought about was marriage. But Evie offers to make a bargain with him to benefit both of them. If he gives her a marriage of convenience, he will gain the Duchess’ fortune and she will have what she wants most, her own choice of the man she loves and wants for her husband. Even if Gabriel can’t give her his heart, he can give her his name and hopefully his friendship. But is he as off-limits as she thinks? Will their marriage bring out the love he had never experienced before? Is it time for the selfish Gabriel to learn how to care deeply for someone else who is his to protect forever?

A Bargain with the Rake is a marriage of convenience historical romance with the heroine arriving at the hero’s home one night with a bargain in mind, a marriage between the 2 of them and access to her funds as a duchess. Gabriel, Viscount St. Clare, recently was cut off from his father and funds so Evie shows up at the perfect moment. So just reading the synopsis, this story reminded me of another red-haired heroine named Evie who shows up in the night with an offer of marriage to a rakish hero to avoid her wards trying to marry her off to one of their sons...so I was very curious how the story would play out. But then when I started reading, this story did go differently. The first half of the book is their journey north to marry and the many pitfalls they encounter along the way...carriage rides with a motion-sick heroine, guns, rainstorms, booked inns, lots of sharing a bed, and staying amongst villagers.

Gabriel & Evie have a lot of chemistry between them and you get to see lots of passionate moments building throughout their journey. This is the 3rd book in the series but they do stand on their own, you do get to see the previous characters make appearances in this book though (Julie, Clydesdale, Samantha). I also really adored Evie’s close relationship with her grandfather, he always wanted Evie to marry for love and that is why she has turned down so many suitors. Her grandfather’s romance is actually the prequel novella for the series (To Fall for a Duke by Christmas). The first half of the book actually had my fav parts, I love a road trip romance and their journey was packed with so much happening. Also this cover is the most stunning in the series!

I received an e-ARC from the author in exchange for my honest thoughts & review. A Bargain with the Rake will be published June 15, 2021.

Marriage of Convenience✔️
Age Gap✔️
Friends to Lovers✔️

I thought the second book of this series was brilliant but this book trumped that one. I was so excited to find out that there was a book for Gabriel as I absolutely adored his character when I met him in the first one! I always hoped it would be with Evie but at first I didn’t know how I’d feel about the age gap, but I can truthfully say that it didn’t bother me at all by the time their romance started.

Evie is my favourite character within the entire series. I love how kind and charming she is while also being elegant and confident. Evie has no doubt gone through her fair share of heartache and I wish she went through less, but it’s also made her the woman she is and she’s grown to be someone who wants to fall in love and someone who is extremely kind.

Gabriel is most certainly a rake and when it comes to love, it’s not on the table for him, but he’s extremely down to earth and loyal. I love how free his spirit is and while it sometimes gets him in trouble, it’s nice to see someone act differently to the rest of the men within then ton and outside of the ton. Gabriel is probably the less person who would ever agree to a marriage of connivence so when he agrees to one with Evie, I honestly want to kick and scream with happiness, even if he only did it for money.

One thing I loved with the story was the beginning, it was something I never would’ve guessed, and it made me want to know how we got to that situation in the first place, it was the perfect way of keeping the reader intrigued.

Honestly, I can’t think of anything that I disliked within this story, I thoroughly enjoyed it and it’ll remain as a favourite for a long time. If anything, I’m super grateful for Sadie Bosque because she’s the reason I absolutely adore historical romances now!

The plot is dragged on for way too long, and as a result there are scenes that lead nowhere, nor do anything for the plot. She is described as both a "proper lady" (which I didn't really see, she was more like an American heiress, since she used a lot of American mannerisms), and as an adventurous hellion (which I didn't see either, but OK). Decide, it's one or the other, she can't be two opposite things at the same time. She laughs ALL THE FREAKING TIME! It was annoying, and she seemed dim-witted because of her giggling in some very inappropriate moments.
Why did she love him, again? He was a complete asshole most of the time. Also, why did he fall in love with her, again? because they think of each other mostly in physical terms, and the few non-physical things they say they love about each other are things we are told are part of their personalities, but I really didn't see. She gave me strong "not like other girls" vibes, her friends weren't nice people, his friends even less, and in general none of the characters were interesting or endearing.
Finally, everything is described very vaguely, specially clothes, and at some point she is described as wearing both stays and a corset. Which was kind of weird because they were basically the same thing (I did my research), so it was like she was wearing a double corset. There were a couple things that didn't quite fit the Regency period, but I only think this was a Regency romance because it's labeled as such. Absolutely nothing in this book suggest Regency.

TITLE: When you make a deal with the devil, expect a few “bites”!

SETTING: To escape either death or an unwanted marriage at the hands of her “guardians”, Evie Montgomery (the Duchess of Somerset) turns to a rake in want of funds as a solution to her problems: marriage, under her terms. Gabriel St. Clare has burned bridges with his father and many men of society by his wanton behavior with their wives and daughters, and finds himself a bit strapped for funds. When approached in the dead of ‘a dark and stormy night’ by a beautiful rich woman who offers him money AND his freedom to choose his own life’s course, in exchange for his protection in a “white” wedding, he accepts with alacrity!

CRITIQUE: A great setup for a delightful novel involving their exploits. The storyline proceeds under a somewhat predictable course, until the surprise ending. I found the characters a bit shallow, with few details of their relationship to their friends or their hobbies. The steam level, once it started, was intense.

Storyline = 3.5
Character development = 3
Steam level = 5
Pace = 4
Editing = 5
Overall = 4

If you are looking for a steamy novel of the upper crust in the 1800’s, that doesn’t burden the reader with extraneous historical data, this is the novel for you.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Evie Montgomery, Duchess of Somerset needs to marry & quickly. Her guardians will either murder her or force her to marry a man of their choice so they may steal her title & inheritance. She has escaped the estate where her guardians took her & now, she has a plan. She will ask the most debauched womanizer in society & the man she has love for seven years, Gabriel, Viscount St. Claire to marry her. Evie knows Gabriel needs funds as his father cut him off after his ongoing wicked, wastrel behavior. In the middle of the night during a rainstorm, Evie appears at his door & offers him money, a marriage of convenience & his freedom to carry-on as usual in his London lifestyle; he will give her his name & protection. They would live separately; he could stay in London & she would go to her late grandfather's estate - they strike an agreement & are off to Gretna Green to marry.

These two are exact opposites but the adventures - both dangerous & hilarious bring them closer together in their travels. Evie & Gabriel are a perfect couple & the humor, friendship built, romance, passion all leads to a hot HEA. I highly recommend this entire series - you won't be disappointed with the spicy romance, wonderful main & secondary characters with great stories that are well-written & entertaining.

This had potential for an easy 4 stars, but I was just left feeling a little let down. Pacing is my main issue. I was left feeling like nothing really got the appropriate amount of development-- I love a forced proximity by traveling together with a dash of marriage of convenience trope. But the traveling took over and I mean the traveling-- not the actual character development that I would expect to come with it. Shallow is the best way I could describe it with more telling than showing. It is a shame since I found I really liked the characters themselves. A big savior would've been to develop the history of the characters-- why tell me she was in love with him for so long but not explain to me why or how, or even show me?! There was literally no development on this idea despite it coming up more than once and being a big factor in her going to him as her marriage candidate. And because so much time was spent on describing the travel the larger character moments overall fall flat, along with what should've been way more climatic moments such as the attempted murders and sabotage (seriously, this needed way more development).

Evie Montgomery is a rare young lady, a Duchess in her own right, but alone in the world after her beloved grandfather died, leaving her in the hands of her grasping trustees who are trying to marry her off to their son. In order to avoid this she runs away to the man she’s secretly loved for years, Gabriel, Viscount St. Clare, one of society’s biggest rakes.

Gabriel, Viscount St. Clare, has finally been financially cut off by his father, after landing himself in the scandal papers one time too many. He’s cut back his household, and is beginning to work out how he’s going to survive, when a bedraggled Evie, dressed as a man arrives and shocks Gabriel by proposing a marriage of convenience, in exchange for part of her fortune.

Gabriel is tempted by the money, but even more by Evie herself, so he agrees and they set off for Gretna, before her trustees arrive to stop them.

So begins an adventure, which leads to meeting some wonderful people, finding themselves in danger and perhaps something more.

I had been avoiding this writer’s work because the adjective “steamy” kept popping up in blurbs and I had dismissed her as yet another marginal writer throwing together awkward, ludicrous plots held together only by lurid sex scenes in order to make a buck. I was very pleasantly surprised by this, my first book by this author, which I only downloaded because it was offered free for a limited time. Sure, the plot was shoplifted from “The Devil in Winter” but it was shoplifted with skill and gracefulness, even a bit of humor, and I remained engaged from beginning to end. The “steaminess” was situation appropriate, and didn’t overtake the feelings a reader wants in their romantic fiction. I did knock off a star for the inauthenticity of the language and period details, and because the plot lacked originality, but the four stars I gave it were well earned. This book may have been free, but I will be happy to purchase this author’s work in the future.

3.5/5

I loved Evie and Gabriel in the previous books. I set my expectations really high for this reason and also because there is nothing I love more than a reformed rake mixed with a marriage of convenience!

There were a lot of moments I really enjoyed from this book. Gabriel's non-confession was so perfect, and him taking her to the gaming hell was just too good. Their chemistry was fantastic.

What I had a bit of issue with was Evie being in love with him the entire time? It's in the summary, and she confesses it to him, but between the beginning of the book and her confession, I can't remember her every saying or alluding to it. They talk about knowing each other for a long time, but I didn't get the feeling that she was in love with him till the middle of the book really. They were very much attracted to each other from the start.

Aside from that bit, I actually really enjoyed this read.

This story is a delight, start to finish. The characters are wonderful, with great dialogue and charming banter. Evie is a Duchess in her own right, having been left the title and several estates by her devoted grandfather. Unfortunately, she has a pair of evil guardians who would see her dead to gain her inheritance. She takes off, and in the dead of night, as well as a storm, and shows up on the doorstep of Gabriel, the Viscount St.Clare, the most unscrupulous Rake of the ton. Knowing his financial difficulties, she offers him a lucrative proposition: all of her money and estates will be his if he will marry her immediately, and then they could both go their separate ways afterwards. As they travel together, many adventures await them, and their relationship smolders and ignites in the process. Lots of adversity in their pathway, but an absolutely wonderful read!

The love of a rake

Evie needs a husband but her wicked and evil family wants her to marry one of their sons or kill her as she is a Duchess in her own right! Greed is definitely a factor in this novel from Evie family! Gabriel has slept with married women and widows alike he never thought to take a wife of his own so lived like he had no future! Evie loves her tenants and takes responsibility for all of her estates! Two people who are opposites but are they really? I love the openness of Evie and that she is brutally honest with Gabriel and does not give in to him no matter how badly she wants to! Gabriel is fiercely protective of Evie! Gabriel lists all the ways he doesn’t love Evie smh he doesn’t know what hit him! Gabriel finds out his past can wreck havoc on his future! Will these two have a HEA? Will Gabriel even live to see it? Read this in 1 night!!!

This may be the book by Sadie Bosque that I loved most! There’s humor and there’s angst here, and the two are perfectly mixed together. The road trip is adventurous, funny and captivating and the love story is a perfectly portrayed slow burn (with an explosive outcome, quite foreseeable from the chemistry between the characters since the beginning!). I loved both characters, especially the sweet and caring scoundrel Gabriel, who’s definitely NOT in love with his Eve (ha ha ha)… Bosque is a great writer and I’ll never tire of repeating that her greatest strength is to be able to write very human, very flawed and very realistic characters. A five star read if ever there was one. (Listen to the audiobook! Both narrators are gorgeous and the already gorgeous reading experience is enhanced tenfold!)

Best book in the series thus far. The firs two drove me crazy with miscommunication, so I was thinking that was this authors favorite trope, but this couple actually communicated with each other pretty well.
I enjoyed the relationship Evie and Gabriel had with each other. The banter and the laughter felt very real and they suited each other nicely and the intimacy was both sweet and spicy at the same time.
I didn’t rate this book 5 stars for two reasons: 1. It mentions in the book that Gabriel and his father really don’t have a great relationship, but I felt like it could have gone into more detail. And then all of a sudden, with no apparent reason, his father wants to make amends. After he’d literally cut him off just weeks prior. That really didn’t make sense to me. 2. Evie’s distant cousins, the Montbrooks, have been causing issues for her the entire book. Even going so far as trying to kill her twice and burning down one of her estates. They are truly horrible people, but at the end of the book when they get their dues I felt like it was brushed aside. Evie finally confronts them and gets all the information she needs to take them to trial, but it never says what actually happened to them! Lady Montbrooks had done enough to potentially be hanged! My petty self wanted a better revenge, but it seems all that happened was that they left London before the news hit the papers.

Evie, the Duchess of Somerset is running from her family who is trying to force her to marry one of their sons or kill her so they can get a hold of her fortune. Evie then ran away from home and seeks out help from Gabriel. She offered Gabriel a bargain, in which they will marry for convenience. Through this, Evie will get the independence that she wants and Gabriel in return will get a hold of her fortune. Together, they journey to Scotland to elope and tie the knot.

I DNF around 110 pages in the book. It's not a bad book but it's just not the book for me..
Usually, I will finish a book when I am halfway through the story but I think I am just not in the mood for this kind of trope. Maybe I will pick this back up when I am in the right mood.

Well done!

I love this trope. Reformed rake overcome by love.
What a take on this theme! Gabriel is The Rake of all England. His reputation well earned.
Evie is the delight of the ton. A Duchess in her own right. The most sought after debutant in the Realm. But she wants to marry for love. And she has loved Gabriel from first sight at her come out ball.
Lots of action here. Lots of scandal, even if not of the debauchery vein.
Wearing breeches. Riding astride. Begging a man to marry her. Eloping to Gretna Greene. Sharing rooms with him before they are married.
And it seems to months before they consummate.
Still, the rake who falls and falls completely is a favorite of mine.
This series is improving by the book.
Well done!

This was an enjoyable read about Evie, the Duchess of Somerset and Gabriel, the Viscount St Clare. He was the biggest rake in town and Evie was in love with him for years. She is in a quandary after her grandfather dies as her distant family is trying to steal her lands and force her to marry a cousin. She makes a bargain with Gabriel and there the story starts with some wild adventures as they are forced on the run. Evie promised her grandfather she would marry for love - she did but the viscount doesn't really know the meaning of the word. Through all the issues they had to face this story was at times funny. Sometimes sad as Evie really loved her grandfather and I thought that was a nice touch. Some steam as well. All in all, I loved the story from beginning to end!!.
