Academy of Falling kingdoms
Told from Wynters POV, the main female lead. The characters are well developed as is the storyline. However, I only managed to read half of the first book. There was mystery but lacked action and chemistry between the characters. I kept on pushing another chapter after another but enough was enough at the end of chapter 18 when I literally hadn't the patience to waste my time. It is a stereotypical storyline where there's a handsome arrogant Prince, a mean upper class girl who thinks shes self entitled and then there's the girl from the lower class who's just too impoverished to have any entitlement. The books are not the type of reads I like, So it's difficult to recommend.

"The Falling Kingdoms" trilogy is full of mystery with a unique blend of magic. While reading them I was also reminded of Melanie Cellier's "The Spoken Mage" series. The common points are the academy setting in a historical background and a world with magic. Also the romance plot is likely cute. I just like this story style which is easy to understand and to get lost in.
Every book in this trilogy adds a bit more to the plot through more mystery, depth of character and story twists. The characters were painted with good and bad sides just like in real life where black and white thinking is not enough to understand everything. To solve the conflict of this world every party had to give something up, only then peace could prevail.
Something only a person like Wynter could make happen since she is so thoughtful with every decision she makes, even so she did not have the most ideal start into her life. Through seemingly concidence, Wynter is taken from her poor surrounding into the upper class. She soon finds out that this life is not so different from her life before, only the people are much richer. Nonetheless, she makes some great friends who she will need very much in her future. A series of accidents happen which Wynter survives only because of Lucian, a demon, which resides in her sword. Lucian teaches Wynter a lot about magic, also about the history of mages and demons and the unfairness of this coexistence. In the end, Wynter decides to fight for change and gets unexpected help from Alex, one of the crown princes, which also introduces the light romance element into the plot. To find out how far Wynter will go to fight for what she believes is the only right choice, you will have to read this fantastic trilogy.

The academy of the falling kingdom, book quiet distribution seemed interesting. The world building was really interesting from the floating continent and the city’s on the mainland. The kingdom structure is built on a Nobility class system and a council system which is never explained how the different systems function to create their governance over the kingdom. In the simplest way to understand the king and the wealthy people live on the floating continent, the middle class live in a city on the mainland. Outside the city wall is the poor which pretty much live in a wasteland of the world.
The series main character wynter is a girl who grows up in the waste being a scavenger for her uncle. Scavenging through magical garbage dump sites. Fighting monsters and defending her best friend and brother from her uncle. It’s not made clear whether she is a slave or not. She is later sold to a man named Dorian. The background of wynter upbringing you get the impression that she would be very skilled in survival, fight and other type of skills. However that is not the case, even with how horrible her uncle is she would be more aware of being played.
Book 1 and 2 wynter comes off as a strong female heroine. The chemistry with her female friends and a few teachers. Wynter has the ability to hear Demons and befriends the demon in her sword. Lucian and Wynter have the best chemistry in the whole series. The relationship development between them makes wynter question the entire structure of the kingdom and their power of magic. For these reason I give the series 3 stars.
The downside to this series there are the same old tropes being used. The main antagonist is the head mistress of the school like ( Nyx from house of night). On the upside she is the only character in the series who uses a wide variety of magic.
Which leads into the next poorly development none of the characters even the main protagonist only uses one or two magic spells throughout the series. Wynter only use two magical spell( being able to walk through walls), and a thunder spell which she figured out by accident. She closes friends barely have any magic.
The magic, demons, monsters, magical trash, and the poorly constructed breakdown of how these came to be really brings out other issues. The lack of imagination with the magic is one thing. The breakdown and difference between monster and demons is not explained. From the demons being trapped in gems and magical tools which is explained the longer they remain trapped they die. The monsters are also supposed to be demons, except they are demons that have forgotten who the they are or better described as zombie demons. The magical trash and how the magic affects the planet and animals in the world. As well as the royal family and council members ignore the effects to the world.
Finally the biggest issue I have with this series the relationship with prince alexander. The prince is the worst character in the series, which is why from the end of book 2 to the end of the series. Wynter relationship with him brings her from the strong heroine to the dumb abuse girlfriend who keeps going back to get abused again. From treating her like trash, to wiping chucks of flesh out of her back, to having issues with every other guy in her life, and finally the blind and careless position on killing millions of innocent people by wanting to make the kingdom Aubade crashing to the ground.
The prince ruins the whole series for me, He does literally nothing to help prevent or help stop events from happening. Wynter who grew up never knowing she had magic and only learning a few spells show more magic than the prince. Wynter forgives him for everything and turns her back on Lucian. The prince father the king literally destroys Wynter family from killing her mother to forcing Wynter into a marriage pact with the prince. The prince literally accepts all this without question.
It’s hard to think of Wynter as a strong female protagonist by books 3. Compared to other strong female characters like Feyre from Acotar, Rachel Morgan from the hollows series, Katniss from hunger games, or Rose Hathaway from vampire academy. All strong female protagonist and remained strong as their stories progressed.
All in all I give the series 3 stars mainly due to the first two books. The world development was very interesting. I wish there was more development with the magic in the series. I feel the main character really didn’t get the development she should have gotten.

This series feels like a sleeper hit just waiting for a final round of editorial polish. 5 stars for how much I loved it, 4 because... Well, it's not 100% cooked yet and that frustrated me a little considering how good it could be. 4.5?
I'm the kind of reader who sniffs at excessive comma usage and continuity bugs, but I loved the story and characters so much it didn't deter me. If that sounds like faint praise it's not meant to; I really think that if you like a good young adult fantasy that takes all the tropes and plays all the right notes with them, then this is a series well worth your time.
We follow a girl named Wynter who lives in the slum-like Scraps beneath the floating mage-city of Reverie. Under the thumb of her cruel uncle, she and her friends scavenge for salvageable magical artefacts amidst the trash and dream of escaping. When a mage from the city buys Wynter's services in order get his hands on an item hidden away inside Reverie's Academy for young mages, she's drawn into a web of magical conspiracy and political manoeuvrings that go far deeper than she could possibly have envisioned. If posing as a student mage wasn't hard enough what with her lack of magical ability, she has to face down snooty classmates, rude professors, and a sarcastic prince. Then come the earthquakes and the demon attacks. And to top it off? The demons are talking to her.
Take everything you want from a YA fantasy, chuck it in a blender, add a spritz of future-dystopia and a dash of paranormal/urban fantasy, then blitz. This series satisfied everything: action, coming-of-age drama, adventure, mystery, a light-touch romance, family feuds, court politics... I enjoyed the heck out of it.
Wynter is a strong enough heroine, with the mean girl Viviane and rude jock Prince Alex as her main foils. Side characters really get going by book 2, each of them with their own personal journeys whether they're fellow students (like Jessa and Tatiana), professors (Gareth, Du Lac), the slum kids, and even the nobility. Foppish Dorian and his nasty sister get a great arc. The wonderful thing is everyone is far deeper personality-wise than you'd first think. I do wish we'd gotten to know the snarky Lucian a bit better sooner, but dang I grew to love him. It's so rare to find a YA that has natural-sounding characters.
The plot is a combination of twists you'll see a mile off (internally screaming at Wynter for missing the downright obvious - her main flaw being she doesn't always see things she should) to ones you'll be genuinely surprised by. Yes, there are some world building things that could have been more obvious rather than leaving it to inferences , but it eventually made sense. The pacing is great. It all came together in such an amazingly satisfying YA way.
Now that downside I mention: it's obviously written by two authors. The writing style is pretty consistent, but the content presented quite a number of continuity bugs. Sometimes things were broken up mid-scene indicated by *** breaks, and in those seconds passing characters could flip from one way of speaking to another, forget something they'd just been told, or know something they couldn't have known until the end of the next chapter. For example the transition from book one to book two, picking up the same scene moments later, was very jarring. This sort of thing tended to happen less in book three, but still did. Also for the easily triggered by excessive punctuation usage, the comma works very hard and semi-colons are sometimes in places they shouldn't be.
Do not get me wrong, I really loved this series. But I honestly believe that if it had a thorough editorial review to check for typos and continuity oddities it would shine alongside traditional published young adult fantasy novels - I swear the story and these authors have got that much potential.
All in all, it's a work of epic magical-mystery that was genuinely fun. I'd definitely keep an eye on these guys.

Magical teen angst
The main character is Wynter, uneducated, half-starved, street thief/ scrounger, and everyone in her life lies to her... except her brother, and her best friend. She works for her Uncle, the local crime boss, who uses her younger brother as a hostage against her good behaviour.
The country is a place where there is magic and a highly structural Victorian steampunky society (with all machines powered by magic instead of coal). The haves - magical folk - live on a massive floating mountain. The have-not live on the ground literally in the shadow of that floating mountain.
One day, her Uncle makes a business deal with a magician Lord Dorian Rosewood, and sends Wynter off to learn how to be a lady. The goal is to pretend to have magic, and get in far enough so that Wynter can steal something for the magician. The Lord Rosewood and his housekeeper train Wynter in the basics of reading, writing, maths, and deportment before enrolling her in the magical school as their ward. Upper crust snobby behaviour abound. Then 100 pages in, you realise you have no idea how old Wynter is. From clothing references, and the King's threats of forced betrothement, I would guess Wynter is around 15-16 years old.
There is also a major plot line around demons. The magicians have discovered how to trap demons in physical things, and use them as a power source. Some magicians can hear and understand them - but if the ruling Council find out, it's an automatic death sentence.
So far, no real plot holes. This book had me hooked.
It's a good adventure. Wynter makes friends, they get into mischief, solve problems. Usual teenager with magic stuff with added adult power plays... but all along, Wynter feels like she's a fraud. Lord Rosewood is still lying to her, and as a result, Wynter never really clues in that she has magical power herself. She thinks it's all tricks with demon-powered machines.
Every plot line is filled with Wynter thinking that she's giving to be caught, punished and thrown out. And for some reason, she thinks that everything that goes wrong, is her fault, because she lied to get into the school, and if she'd been a real magician, things wouldn't go wrong.
And ultimately, long after the point where Wynter should have stopped feeling guilty and realised she has magic, I gave up on the book. I couldn't deal with the constant guilt mongering.
I really want to find out how the story ends - but there's no point when I have to force myself to keep reading.

I really enjoyed these three books and reading them one after the other is great. No waiting for the next one to see what happened. In the first book, Wynter Wilcox was a scavenger, who along with her younger brother, Briar and her friend Sterling, worked for her abusive uncle looking for scraps of old mage items found in the lower realm. Her uncle decided to sell her services to a nobleman from the upper realms. She was to enter the mage academy as a student and find a journal for him and steal it. She finds that to some degree she can perform some magic. She has no idea if it natural or if it was because of the demon who inhabited her sword. As she was running out of time, she had to hope that she could pass the final tests, which would allow her to continue at the academy, thus giving her more time to finish her task.
In the second book, Although she saved the life of Prince Alexander when they fell from the floating city, Wynter is worried that he might tell his father and the academy that she was a fraud who also talks to demons. She had to go back to the academy and pretend that nothing was wrong, but demon attacks keep happening and people are starting to look at her because she was present at each attack. When things come to a head, her Wynter and her friends try to find out who is releasing demons and is therefore responsible for the attacks.
In the last book, with her uncle sent off to war with the neighboring city, Wynter must try and save her city with the help of her friends.

I really enjoyed this trilogy. I also enjoyed it only costing .99. :)
It is quite different than any other of the hundreds of series I have read. I was invested in the characters and intriged by
this new world. It was going along so flawlessly.... And then the sixth son mentioned his six older brothers... Ok?!?
Then in the third book there were more errors that bothered me... One was her saying she had never killed anyone before as they were heading off to war and.... Hello?!? She had just killed her uncle like a couple of chapters before this. There were just a couple of other items similiar to this, but it bothers me. The writing was also pretty flawless until the third book... Like it was rushed in editing?!?
Overall, I still loved most of it!

Great for all ages.
It is quite different than any other of the hundreds of series I have read. I was invested in the characters and intriged by
this new world. It was going along so flawlessly.... And then the sixth son mentioned his six older brothers... Ok?!?
Then in the third book there were more errors that bothered me... One was her saying she had never killed anyone before as they were heading off to war and.... Hello?!? She had just killed her uncle like a couple of chapters before this. There were just a couple of other items similiar to this, but it bothers me. The writing was also pretty flawless until the third book... Like it was rushed in editing?!?
Overall, I still loved most of it!

Great to have all of the 3 books in the Academy of Falling Kingdoms in one complete bookset (currently, at a bargain price, 3/12/19!). Brilliant tale of mages, magic, demons & ethereal floating cities. Well written with wonderful descriptions & main characters that draw you into their magical world. Definitely a page-turning series that makes you want to follow all the characters' trials & tribulations; betrayals, secrets uncovered, battles & victories as you delve into this brilliant series! Loved it & hope there's more from this great writing combination.

I really enjoyed this series.
They had me worried with what happened to Wynter in the second book, and I'm glad that their solution wasn't gratuitous but rather integral to the remainder of the series. Great imagination. I just wished Alexander's character was more developed. I get the prejudiced, spoiled, kid who was clueless about the reality of life outside his privileged class, but I still have some real reservations about him as the male hero of this story. I don't like him very much.

I really loved this series. The first book ended on quite the cliff hanger, so I was glad I had the complete set. I haven't binge read anything in a while, but this one warranted some binging. The world feels so full, the characters so developed, and the magic system is unlike anything I've ever seen before. I mean, come on, dancing??? So cool. Plus the whole where-the-magic-comes-from, thing, which is quite the subject to handle. But I felt the authors did it well. So glad I grabbed this off my TBR. :D

Loved it
I loved the characters and the storyline. This was so amazing that I couldn’t put it down. I’d always fall asleep reading it. To excited to go to sleep the normal way which was at the next chapter but never getting there. I was excited to see what would happen next cause this book was thrilling, tear jerker and lots of laughs. I hate to see this end but I loved every minute of it.

Falling Kingdoms
I really enjoyed this series. It is a great blend of all the emotions one encounters in most life situations. The characters are people you can relate to. Loved the spin on magic use also. The demons were a nice and new element to the magic use. The whole world is easy to visualize and well described. A wonderful series. Would enjoy reading more about this world.

Great series
I really enjoyed the falling kingdom series. It had a lot of mysteries and kept me guessing throughout. The characters were great and unfolded more along the way. Only thing I would’ve liked a bit more of is romance; such as more of Wynter and Alexander’s relationship growing.
Otherwise it was a great read and had some really original ideas that I haven’t read before.

I had read these books separately and with the box set you can read the series all at once. The storyline is well-written and intriguing, engaging with great main and secondary characters. There is suspense, drama, jealousy, competition, deception, mystery and action. Great binge reading Collection. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.

Chaos reigns....
This trilogy has it all; scrappers/poor, middle class, the rich and the titled. A young scrapper is given a task for an elite, she, must achieve. However, she is not really a scrapper and many revelations come to light that brings about death and war.
A wonderful series that was extremely hard to put down until finished.

Awesome
This series was pretty awesome. I would’ve given it five stars, but there was a lot of grammatical and spelling errors. A lot of words that were incorrect. Other than that it would totally be worth a five star rating. I couldn’t put the books down, and read straight through for almost 2 days.

These 3 books are amazing I really enjoyed listening to them I got these 3 books on audible n fell in live with the books. I didn’t want to put them down. The books were so captivating and so interesting I was always left wondering what is going to happen next and the last book was absolutely perfect.

Amazing read
Wow this book just hooks. Good plot, well made characters, action, mystery, twisted and magical.
I would have given it 5 stars but there were a few errors and if it had been longer it could have been more. Still an amazing read that is heartfelt and heartbreaking at times and keeps you interested.

Excellent series.
Excellent series...thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish...Loved all the romantic moments...wish there were more between our heroin and her Prince...but never mind...all the characters were great.

A complex and moving tale.
This is a happily ever after, with a few tears along the way. String characters, interesting world, and tons of action. You will laugh out loud, grab the tissues and sigh all in the space of a chapter. Enjoy!

Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors aside the story is awful. There is no character growth or clear world building. I wouldn't waste your time.
Car crash from start to finish. No emotion for characters and lots of plot holes. I will avoid these authors going forward.

Entertaining
I enjoyed this story. It had its good writing moments and it's bad, but overall, I enjoyed the tale. I enjoyed the world building and the magic. I want to give it 3 &1/2 stars.

The Falling Kingdoms series boxset by Maisa Mills and Drake Mason
This was a really great trilogy with amazing characters and detail. I found myself glued to the pages the farther into the story I read!

Really gripping read.
This is a three book series. The saga develops really well and takes the reader through an epic journey from rags to riches. The conclusion was really thrilling and somewhat unexpected. An excellent read.

At first, I thought I knew where Wynter's story was headed, but the second and third novels threw some unexpected and exciting moments my way. I enjoyed all three novels. Lucien was hands-down my favorite character. His personality and quick verbal jabs made me laugh every time.

One of my favorite YA Fantasy series of 2020! I read this set in less than a week. The characters are unique and well rounded, and the world is so deliciously detailed that I can remember them months later. The ending is unexpected in a good way. It will be one of my repeat reads in the future.
