New Techniques of Grief Therapy: Bereavement and Beyond

Rate this book
New Techniques of Grief Therapy: Bereavement and Beyond expands on the mission of the previous two Techniques books, featuring innovative approaches to address the needs of those whose lives have been shadowed by loss--whether through bereavement, serious illness, the rupture of a relationship, or other complex or intangible losses, such as of an identity-defining career.

The book starts with several framing chapters by prominent theorists that provide a big- picture orientation to grief work and follows with a generous toolkit of creative therapeutic techniques described in concrete detail and anchored in illustrative case studies to convey their use in actual practice. New Techniques of Grief Therapy is an indispensable resource for professionals working in hospice, hospital, palliative care, and elder care settings; clinicians in broader health-care and mental health-care practices; executive coaches; and students in the field of grief therapy.

This is essentially a textbook with a lot of great information for mental health practitioners such as social workers, therapists, hospice workers, psychologists, bereavement group leaders, and psychiatrists. Despite being technical, there is also much that could be of use for laypersons experiencing grief in their personal lives.

I purchased New Techniques of Grief Therapy: Bereavement and Beyond as a part of a continuing education unit (CEU) class. You have to be up to date on the latest research and techniques to maintain your license – as it should be. I found that reviewing the 73-question pre-test helped me learn the material in this fairly dense book. Each of the 59 chapters, written by a raft of different mental health professionals, provides a different model for addressing grief in therapy. Modern research shows that retrieval-based study strategies are vital for learning and retaining complex information. Making use of storytelling is also an important part of learning, and each chapter provides a case study of the technique being used in individual, group, and other settings.

Good Resource for Professionals and Laypersons

This is an excellent resource for clinicians in the helping and medical professions as well as for the general public. The book is written in a way that it can be a resource for bereavement group leaders, other hospice workers, adult, child and senior therapists and other helping fields.
The book is chock full of good ideas to move people forward in a variety of grieving situations including various losses. If you are grieving the loss of a job, your pet or a relative, this book covers it. You don't need to read every line. You can use the index and find the appropriate area for your needs.
You will not be bored or necc3ssarily sad with this read. You will find the techniques personally helpful.
