The cats are back, and a new Mew is about to emerge! When Berry transfers to a different school, little does she know she’s about to become the first Mew Mew with TWO sets of animal genes in her blood. Half cat, half rabbit, Berry is joining the Mew Mew team just in time: A new gang calling itself the Crusaders has appeared, and its leader just happens to love wild game like rabbitâ€"well done and served for dinner! The highly anticipated sequel to the best-selling Tokyo Mew Mew is finally here!
So let's start this review with the good things first: - the art is lovely (as expected from Mia Ikumi) - I liked Tasuku (even though I shouldn't) - ... that's it.
Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode feels like a bad fanfiction written by a 12 year old fan who wanted to self-insert into the story. And as any 12 year old: she doesn't know what the fuck she's doing.
I mean, let me summarize what happens in this volume: - A new girl gets her dna mixed with not one, but TWO red data animals. Because being a rabbit wasn't enough, clearly. - She becomes the new group leader 'cause Ichigo is studying abroad with Masaya (the new girl, who none of the other girls have even met yet. as opposed to, idk, someone else from the team who's been a part of it for a longer time???) - The aliens have gone back to their (new) planet, so the new threat is... a cult (I wish I was joking)
These are just a few of the "wtf" things in this. Berry is such a basic kind of character, as in: she almost has no personality. The few times she shows a personality is when she keeps rejecting her childhood friend Tasuku (who CLEARLY has a crush on her). What's worse: Tasuku's character lives and breathes only for her, he was created JUST for that [like a shoujo version of a manic pixie dream boy, I suppose]. I really shouldn't like him as much as I did (I mean, despite it all... he IS pretty cute and sweet).
The story doesn't even take place that far into the future. When I think of a sequel, I think something like "oh, this is going to feature the main character's children" or "oh this is some years after the last event" but no, à la Mode happens just 4 months after the original story. There was no need for a sequel and yet here we are, with a new childish OC and Ichigo isn't even dead or anything like that to be completely set aside.
It's such a shame that something that looks THIS CUTE can be so disappointing.
This sequel to the Mew Mew saga seemed more like a "I can't let go of my characters!" rather than a true sequel.
The new main character is fused with two critters, cat and rabbit. I found myself staring at her for a long time going, "Wow, that sounds like bad fanfiction..." When I first saw her, I thought she was some kind of kangaroo, which would have been awesome, but two animals? No. Just... no.
She's another Ichigo, but not as much fun.
And the bad guys... I miss the aliens. They were cooler.
Wow I hated this. It's like a fanfiction written by a 12 year old. Which could be cute except this isn't a twelve-year-old writing fanfiction, it's supposed to be an actual sequel.
TMM-ALA is a follow-up series to the original 7-volume TMM series, which I have not read. Therefore, I cannot tell you much about how the two link to one abother story-wise. But, it is also a new beginning of sorts. So, I will treat it as such. -------------------- Berry is a normal girl with normal problems, such as a neighbor boy that crawls in her window every morning to hug her and see her to school. Berry is very excited to start school this year, having gotten into the school with the pretty uniforms she likes so much. But, fate seems to have plans for her that differentiate from her original plans. One slight mishap at a cafe later, and Berry become Mew Berry, a magical girl with the powers of bunny and cat....and, the new leader of the well-known crime-fighting magical girl team, Tokyo Mew Mew. At first, she does not believe all this could happen to her. But, when she is thrown into dangerous situations that she has to stop, it all sinks all too quickly. Not much happens in Volume 1, except the strange Mr. Akizuki coming to Berry's school, and hypnotizing all the female students, in an attempt to try to kidnap and destroy Berry. But, Berry does finally get to meet Ichigo--who has returned from London on a whim--and the other Mew Mews, all of which are starting to attend her school in order to have the team together again at all times. And, she also gets told the truth behind Cafe Mew Mew, the Mew Mew HQ, which doubles as a maid restaurant and Mew Mew merchandise retailer. -------------------------------- I also read the final volume, Vol.2, and will be reviewing it next. I checked these volumes out from the Library in Hartselle. It's a small place, but I will definitely be returning there, and maybe getting other books/mangas from there as well.
Tokyo Mew Mew A La Mode was a good book but I miss Kishu and the others. They gave the book more plot. Berry was sort of like another Ichigo. Their personalities are nearly identical. How they react to being a chimera is nearly the same too. Freak out, calm down and freak out some more. It made the book very predictable. The new boy was comical and cute. I couldn't stop laughing. I have to say, Masaya was just so...boring. So perfect for Ichigo that its boring. He is also..dense? I just like this one over the other one. The new enemies where pretty good but it doesn't make sense why they became a group. Wouldn't society like their abilities? It may seem strange at first but it would help if a war happened? Just saying...But overall the book was good.
Not a bad read, Tokyo Mew Mew a La Mode is the sequel to the previous installment Tokyo Mew Mew. TMM focuses on Ichigo Momomiya, however A La Mode decides to focus on a different girl, Berry Shirayuki, who, in a magical twist of fate (like Ichigo) finds herself infused with the DNA of not one, but two endangered species. The series, though, is too short to be as good as some had hoped. Details are a little gipped, and romance between Berry and her childhood friend Tasuku is rushed, giving an incomplete feeling. I would reccommend you stick with the original TMM. But if you're really looking for more Mew, take a gander.
Let us for a moment put aside the stupidity of fusing the main character with two animals - Berry's design is incredibly cute. I generally like Berry as a character as well as her childhood friend Tasuku. And that's about as good as it gets - Tokyo Mew Mew A La Mode isn't awful, but it comes pretty close to it.
The original Tokyo Mew Mew, although flawed, is a big favourite of mine. I was already excited when the ending teased a potential sequel, and even more so when I found it in the stores. What it actually turned out to be was a bitter disappointment, especially because I do like the two new main characters.
The plot moves along at a rapid pace so that it seems rushed and just random. Most of the characters' actions don't make sense and decisions made are just plain ridiculous. There are even some major plot holes such as the Mew Mew powers not being able to hurt humans - the new villains are human and the Mew Mew powers sure work on them.
And while we are at it, the villains might even be the root of all that is wrong with this sequel. They're the kind you just can't take serious - I haven't the slightest idea what their ambitions or goals are and their strategies are laughable. The author tries so hard to make them appear enigmatic and intimidating but fails miserably. The final battle, if one can call it that, is just as pathetic and only shows what a bunch of clowns these villains are.
I come back for a reread now and again, each time naively hoping that it isn't as bad as I remember it to be - of course, I am disappointment time and again. Yeah, well, let's just enjoy looking at Berry's design and be content with that (...)

As a preliminary note, I actually got these from a friend and have NOT read the original Tokyo Mew Mew series, so I'm going into this completely blind. ---
Awwwww this was adorable!! Berry is so cute! As a lover of bunnies, her design really fit my aesthetic. And I can't get over the fact that she only got into her school because she liked their uniforms so much. slay girlie!!! Her little boo Tasuku is SO cute. He rollerblades everywhere??? is unafraid to dress in drag for her??? (makes the drag look amazing??) literally just wants her to be happy??? how sweet!!
The plot's kind of a mess, but I don't really care! It's soooo cute!!!
also the villains made me laugh like lol what are they on
I'd say the best part of this was Berry and her childhood best friend. The other Mews were cute but firmly weird goofy side characters. The fights weren't really fights? They started and ended so quickly. Clearly not the focus of the story. And again, the villains really don't have much to them... but they did make me laugh, so there's that. Not this seventeen year old college grad who can just make all women fall in love with him LMFAO it's just so absurd you can only laugh.
I must say, I love rereading stuff I've read decades ago because that's where you see how much you've actually changed and grown. Years ago, I devoured the story. It was so interesting to me, so much at stake, such cute outfits, so little time to save the world or whatever, such intriguing villains. Uhm....what? The story is waaaay too fast-paced with nothing actually at stake because everything is resolved within 5 to 15 panels, the 'villains' are cringe at best, predatory at worst (don't tell me the scene where that non-teacher tries to kiss a 12-year old is ok cuz its not) and the outfits really are not fit for the CHILDREN that they are (Zakuro is the only exception, but come on!). I mean, I get that it's magical girl the target audience is supposed to be young girls (and boys, mind ya) and not someone reaching 30 sometime this year, but seriously, there must be a better way to convey the given message of "anyone can save the world if they put their minds to it" that is not portraying students, that have yet to reach their puberty, in very short, revealing and downright inappropriate fits. Having said that, my inner 12 year old still enjoyed it, a little (TASUKU!!), for old time's sake, so there's that.
Despite not have read the first 7 volumes of Tokyo Mew Mew, this continuation of The Mew Mews is spectacular. I spent my late childhood in America with Tokyo Mew Mew, so this is berry magnificent.
This was definitely an fantastic and magical yet weak book to start the year with as my first read book, lmao-
I'm probably going to get cancelled by everybody who hates this book.
I now kinda now what happened on the previous series, but like- Berry is kinda dull, ngl....Tasuku needs to chill down with the Berry obsession before he turns into Oil Fucking (excuse my foul language) Lotion....(but he's really sweet and cute so I can't-) Ichigo isn't dead y'all, uhm- we needed more suspension.......The St. Rose Crusaders were meh.
Overall, I see how y'all use the "fanfiction written by a 12 year old" (I'd write a better fanfic) claim and reasoning......but sadly the artwork is cute af.
Byebye, the manga (cuz I read both volumes in one colusus in one) overall, as a sequel, could have been better. But, I did enjoy it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
We follow Berry who is a new mew mew while they have to fight off a new evil organization. This was super cute and a lot of fun! I love the flirting between Berry and Tasuku I think it is super cute and wholesome. I loved this volume a lot and can't wait to read the next one! It's a shame that this series is so short because I am really loving the new characters, I would go as far to say that it is more enjoyable than the original series. The art is also super good and looks like screenshots straight out of an anime!
I liked the concept of the girl having animal genes in them and being able to have some body parts of that animal, but Berry in there gets 2 animal genes, A cat and a rabbit. I did like the idea of Ichigo having to kiss another cat when she turns into a cat also. I did like it and it was entertaining.
Honestly...these two volumes A La Mode 1 and 2 where totally unnecessary. It would have been cool if they where about Kish and his friends. But it was just like some random extra character that didn't make it to the original. It will be a while for me to re read this manga. Ir also could have been made into a longer version.
Not really sure how I feel about this one. It's cute, love the old school art style, just not sure how I feel about the new villains.
I did enjoy seeing the original characters interact with each other again. I will be reading the next volume, maybe I will like it better than the first.
This is a reread for me. I first read this as a kid, now I’ve read it as an adult. It’s good! But I feel like it’s fast paced. You definitely need to read Tokyo Mew Mew BEFORE reading a la Mode. The only thing I found annoying was the font for Berry’s…thoughts? On some pages it was hard to read and blended with the background. I would rate a 3.5 but seems too low.
I absolutely love "Tokyo Mew Mew" or "Mew Mew Power", depending on where you are from. The storyline is so unique and after reading each book, or watching each episode, you are left wanting more. I'd definitely recommend reading "Tokyo Mew Mew" or if that is not your thing, watching the series on Youtube. <3
