Molly’s life changes forever when her mother is killed in a horrific accident. Although her beloved grandfather wants to keep her and little brother Kevin with him in Birmingham, the authorities decide it’s best for the girl to live with her maternal grandmother, on a farm in Donegal. So Molly is packed off to Biddy Sullivan, who’s a hard, cruel woman who loves to bear a grudge. Years of hardship follow and just as Molly begins to grow independent, war breaks out. She learns that her grandfather has died - so what’s become of Kevin? He’s only ten, and he must need her. So the naive country girl sets off for her home city, little guessing what perils are to befall her before she can discover her brother’s fate...
I did enjoy reading this book. I really liked Molly as the main character. Her life was not an easy one, but she had a amazing strength of character from being a teenager having to move to Ireland with what I was saying very nastily betrayed grandmother had a difficult time of losing her parents in the car accident and being separated from her brother, and then onto going to Birmingham do in the war to find her brother and be in almost Cajoled into a life of unfortunate means by two horrible man Ray and Charlie. Molly strength of character again had a standing up to people like Ryan Charlie and having them put behind bars for attacking her and trying to lead you into a wayward life. The character I liked most was uncle Tom, he was such a quiet gentle loving man and hard-working farmer who when Molly came along, caused him to change so much over the pages of the book during that time. It was a joy to see him become a man in his own right, standing up to his awful mother biddy on behalf of Molly and also himself. I thought that he was a bit of a gentle giant who only roared when he needed to, But when he did you noticed. I enjoyed it just like in biddy Sullivan, she was a nasty cruel woman who did not seem to have a scrap of love, not only towards Molly but also her son Tom and Ali other family members that her dared to leave the life she had. I never felt sorry for this character and I enjoyed seeing Molly and Tom stand up to her and the reaction she did as she got older when she realised that she couldn’t believe them. All in all a good book to read that my mum has put aside for me to read because she enjoyed it I think as much.

This book was great till the end, it just ended too soon without a real explanation of what happened with the sisters. This is why I gave 3 starts and not 4, the end just left me with too many unanswered questions.
This book reminded me a lot of Lesley Pearse's books who I really like and so I really enjoyed this book. The book has everything - romance, family drama, crime and really interesting characters. I will definitely be reading the next book in this series!
Im starting to think I wont bother with any more of Ann Bennett books. No really depth and the plot was contrived. The Birmingham experience for Molly was overdone and a stupid idea. It all ended too suddenly as though the author got bored at the end and the middle part was drawn out and overdone.
