Librarian Carrie Singleton sleuths a murder at her best friend’s wedding in Agatha Award nominee Allison Brook’s fifth Haunted Library mystery.
Clover Ridge librarian Carrie Singleton is thrilled to attend her best friend Angela’s wedding, but Angela’s family can be a bit…much. Angela’s wealthy cousin Donna hosts an extravagant bridal shower at her resplendent home, but the celebrations turn to gossip as the guests notice Donna’s surgeon husband, Aiden, spending a bit too much time with Donna’s cousin Roxy. At the wedding reception, the sweet occasion turns darkly bitter when Aiden topples into the chocolate fountain–dead.
The suspect list is as long as the guest list, and as difficult to sort out as the seating chart. A few of the top contenders on Carrie’s suspect list are the flirtatious Roxy, emotionally unstable since her recent divorce; Angela’s grouchy brother, who feels Aiden betrayed him; and Roxy’s scorned ex-husband. Even Donna may have had reason to want her husband dead. And Aiden’s gossipy office manager has plenty to say about them all.
Then another member of Angela’s family is murdered, making Carrie more determined than ever to find the killer. Can library ghost Evelyn and library cat Smoky Joe help Carrie solve the murders before she becomes the next of Angela’s wedding guests to head to the grave?
Summer is here in Clover Ridge, Connecticut! This is book five in the Haunted Library cozy series and a great installment. Death on the Shelf has more romance than the previous books since it features Carrie's BFF Angela's wedding. There's a lot of love in the air as well as family gathering and festivities. From bridal shower, to rehearsal to the wedding. Family barbecue, Fourth of July barbecue, and picnic. There's major eating in this one, you don't want to read while hungry!
I've read this series from the beginning and really enjoy the setting and characters. I love Carrie and Dylan and the relatives in and out of town are mostly here. Carrie is busy in this one. Her job is the head of programs and events at Clover Ridge library and also town's Nancy Drew. There's a death at the wedding and locating Ms. Evelyn, library-friendly ghost's missing brother, to yet another death. There's a lot of twists and turns with many suspects to choose from and a very exciting ending!
Thank you Netgalley, and Crooked Lane Books for this ARC. Now available.
This the fifth book in an excellent series which I actually joined at book two. One day I must make the time to go back and read the very first book.
Anyway by now the characters are good friends and I look forward to seeing what will happen to them next in each new book. In Death on the Shelf Carrie's friend Angela is getting married and unfortunately someone dies suddenly at the reception. When the police declare it to be murder Carrie is on the case, determined to find out who did it.
There are plenty of possible culprits and the choice only gets a little easier when one of them becomes the second victim. I enjoyed the fact the the police and Dylan, Carrie's boyfriend, support her in her efforts instead of constantly putting her down which is more the norm in the average cosy. She also gets advice from the library's resident ghost which is fun!
Life is really looking up for Carrie now and several really good things happen to her. The book ends on a high note and I am already looking forward to the next.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Death on the Shelf is the 5th book in The Haunted Library Mysteries written by Allison Brook. I've previously read the earlier books and am very enamored with the characters, setting, and writing style. Brook transports you to a southern Connecticut town where there's old money and new blood, presenting all the charismatic library feels and the typical cozy charm. This time, murder hits a little too close to home again.
Early on in the series we'd met Carrie Singleton's best friend, Angela. She previously got engaged and in this book is preparing for her wedding week festivities. Unfortunately, her cousins are causing some troubles, and one of them ends up dead in the chocolate fountain. Evelyn, the library ghost, knew something bad was going to happen but she couldn't give any real details to Carrie, our amateur sleuth. Meanwhile, Carrie's boyfriend Dylan is keeping a small secret from her, and it involves her father's new life. Luckily, Carrie can rest outside of those two driving stories... oh wait, she can't... because the mayor wants her to take a new position on the Town Council.
Cozies need to present a bunch of stories adjacent to or within the murder story, and that's why this is a good example of a series that can easily be added to your regular reading schedule. While it's not filled with tons of supporting cast members, there are about a dozen or so you get to know and root for. I enjoy learning tidbits about the library staff and neighbors as Carrie meanders through the day trying to solve a crime or get through work. When Angela's two cousins Roxy and Donna increase the dysfunction in her family, it's Carrie who tries to sort it all out, especially when she encourages Angela to leave town on her honeymoon despite the murder.
The mystery is good; there are at least 6 potential suspects. There is also a side mystery where Carrie's helping Evelyn track down a missing family member. I enjoyed how she handled both investigations, weaving in and out of her puzzles while making decisions about the library and the new position with the mayor. By the time the murder is solved, Carrie has another huge decision to make at the end of the book, and readers are left with a wonderful end to a great story. I'm happy and holding on to a good balance of anticipation and gratitude for a breezy series with depth and charm. Looking forward to the next installment in 2021!
Carrie Singleton was busy with her friends, organizing her best friend’s bridal shower, which would follow with the wedding a couple of weeks later. Angela was looking forward to marrying Steve but was hoping her brother Tommy wouldn’t arrive for the wedding. She and Tommy hadn’t seen eye to eye since they were children, but it seemed there would be more trouble with cousins and in-laws as well. Angela knew they should have eloped!
The wedding went flawlessly but the reception with the delicious food and drinks, speeches and laughter, faded when Angela’s cousin in law, Aiden, collapsed over the chocolate fountain, right beside Carrie and her partner Dylan. When he was pronounced dead and the local police arrived, the small town of Clover Ridge had another mystery on its hands.
Carrie’s job at the library was one she loved and the resident ghost, Evelyn was always popping in to see Carrie. When Evelyn set a task for Carrie, one she was happy to do her best with, she found herself busy with looking for Aiden’s killer, working at the library, doing the job Evelyn needed, caring for Smoky Joe (her cat) and trying to decide if she should say yes to the mayor’s request. Oh, and spending time with Dylan! Not much in a girl’s life…
Death on the Shelf is the 5th in the Haunted Library Mysteries by Alison Brook and is the first one I’ve read. I had no trouble following the story and enjoyed it very much. There were plenty of twists, I certainly didn’t pick the killer, and I found the majority of the characters easy to like. Lots of yummy food was eaten – the lobster sounded delicious! – and I’m happy to recommend Death on the Shelf to fans of cosy mysteries.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
Death on the Shelf by Allison Brook is the fifth installment in the paranormal cozy The Haunted Library Mysteries series. As with most cozy mysteries each book of The Haunted Library Mysteries will contain their own mystery to be solved within the book so they all could be read as a standalone or in any order if choosing to do so. However, for those following along from the beginning there will be character development carried over from book to book.
Carrie Singleton had returned to Clover Ridge, Connecticut to stay with her aunt and uncle for a while but when she was just about to move on she was given the opportunity to become the head of programs and events at the local library. When she was offered the job Carrie was almost ready to turn it down when she heard a strange voice telling her to think on it. Thinking it was her own mind telling her not to pass up the offer quite so quickly she did just that. Carrie found the job was more than she could have wanted so she stayed and then found out the voice that convinced her to stay was not her conscience but a friendly ghost of a former employee that helps Carrie in her new position.
Carrie never expected that her new job would come with tracking down so many murderers in the small town of Clover Ridge but with Evelyn the ghost’s help she has been doing just that. Now Carrie is just excited to be attending her best friend Angela’s wedding and hopefully enjoy some time just having fun. Unfortunately for Carrie during the bridal shower Angela’s cousin’s husband, Aiden, is murdered right there at the party. Of course Carrie feels she needs to do anything she can to help find the murderer but the suspect list is a mile long with all the guests in attendance.
The Haunted Library Mysteries series is another that I have been following from the beginning and while I was a bit so so at first with this series it has steadily grown on me with each new book. This one has that mix of genres I enjoy with having a resident ghost help solve the murders and the characters are quirky and fun which is always a bonus to me. Then there’s that resident kitty, Smokey Joe, to fill my cute critter quota. Wrap all of that up in a nice mystery and it brings me back time and again.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Honestly I thought the main character was a little too self-righteous. She also gets consulted like she’s a detective or something which is too far removed from reality for my taste. I am going to continue with the series since in this far in but I don’t know if I recommend it.
I really have little to say about this one. I apparently read book one in this series (and forgot). Going back to my review of that book, I see I had a major issue with Carrie. That actually wasn't the case here. Carrie was fine. This time it was her annoying drama queen of a BFF (Angela) that brought my rating down. Obviously, this isn't the series for me.
Best one yet! This mystery stumped me and kept me guessing. This time not only was there a murder at her best friend's wedding, Evelyn has asked her to help find her brother and niece. I loved how real Carrie was with her feelings about Dylan, totally relatable. She has quite the community of friends and family. I cannot wait to see what comes next.
Although I have not read the previous four books in this series, Death on the Shelf is easily read as a stand-alone cozy mystery with some engaging and some treacherous characters. The author does make some references from prior books in the series about family relationships and to some previous amateur sleuthing by the protagonist, Carrie Singleton, but these are only background to the present mystery. Carrie is an endearing character to her fellow librarian employees and to the residents of the small town of Clover Ridge, where as a child, she visited the Singleton family farm on the outskirts of town. Others naturally seek her out for caring assistance and she goes out of her way to help them even when she may put herself at risk. After the well-liked and talented surgeon, Aiden Harrington, falls dead into the chocolate fountain at the wedding reception of her best friend, Angela, .right in front of Carrie, questions and suspicions arise and Carrie is drawn into investigating to the chagrin of her policeman friend, John. who has determined the death is a murder. A later death complicates the investigation, as strained family relationships, infidelity, jealousy, insurance fraud, and personal grievances play their parts in what is "just lots of suspects with a variety of motives." But being a cozy, the story also reveals some very caring relationships and blooming love stories. The involvement of the spirit ghost Evelyn, who I assumed was in a previous book of the series, seemed a bit off the track but gave a light touch to the story as well as introduced a secondary plot line. An involved but enjoyable read. I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review.
Death on the Shelf is the perfect addition to this cozy series by Allison Brook. Carrie Singleton is preparing for her best friend’s wedding. Angela is a nervous bride, especially when her brother shows up and causes friction among the relatives. When a wedding shower fiasco ends up placing the guests at Angela’s cousins home, things suddenly take a bizarre turn.
When Angela’s wedding day arrives, an unexpected death turns the beautiful day into a nightmare. Angela turns to Carrie, and asks her to find out who the perpetrator is. Of course, this isn’t the only story going on, we have a visit from Carrie’s father Jim, and a special request from Carrie’s spectral friend, Evelyn.
This story is superb. From the first line in the book until the last, I was captivated and kept on the edge of my seat.
I’ve read this entire series and I can’t wait to see what happens next in this fantastic series. #DeathontheShelf #NetGalley
Nothing like a murder at a wedding to get everyone stirred up and suspecting each other! Good thing Carrie and crew were present so they could jump on the investigation right away! Superb characters down to the fluffy grey cat that are both intelligent and capable to help sort the clues out on the plethora of suspects! Add in an enticing plot and you have a book that is a must read. The series is an excellent one with a library as it's main setting so I do recommend starting with the first book so you don't miss out on any of the reading fun in the series as well as the character development along the way, but you could technically just read this book and still enjoy it!
As with the others in the series, I did like this one. The mystery was interesting. Not overly exciting, but not bad. The only reason I took 1 star off was because a lot of the end was a bit boring (The rest of the book is a great read though). I just felt like there were really long explanations/details about food, restaurants, clothing, clothes shopping. I felt like it kept going (and going)for a while when I wanted Carrie to just get back to her investigation. I really did like this book but the end was a bit of a snooze...I still love the series and will definitely grab the next one, assuming there will be one! Love this series. :) Happy reading!
I have loved this series since the beginning, each one being better than the last! This talented author shares a great setting in Connecticut, where some of our favorite characters work at the library. Reading this is like visiting old friends. There is a light paranormal element, the ghost of a murdered former librarian. It was quite a challenge to guess whodunit.
Angela, Carrie’s best friend and co-worker, is getting married in a few days, and they are tying up loose ends. Tommy, Angela’s older brother and in need of a serious attitude adjustment, is in town. He arrived early to find investors for his next movie project and has been speaking with relatives and acquaintances. He made Angela’s childhood miserable with his harassment.
One of Angela’s cousins, Donna, provided her home for Angela’s shower. Another cousin, Roxy, will help, as well as the ladies from the library. Donna’s husband Aiden is a personable, highly respected surgeon. Roxy had just divorced her physician husband and Aiden’s best friend. The shower was a success. Carrie and the others met Aiden, who might provide some backing for Tommy’s next movie.
Carrie is my favorite. She grew up in unusual circumstances, and with the love of her great uncle and aunt, Bosco and Harriet, made several positive changes in her life, including excelling at her job at the library. Evelyn, the resident ghost, is a delightful lady who can only be seen and heard by Carrie and her cousin’s four-year-old daughter. Carrie has helped solve several murders in town, including Evelyn’s cold case. Many good things have been happening for her, including having good friends, dating a special guy, and her father being back in her life after leaving a life of crime to work to help catch thieves. The mayor wants her to run for a vacant seat on the town council.
Evelyn came to Carrie for help. Her brother Harold had been in trouble years ago, disappeared, and was not seen again. Evelyn heard someone talking about Harold’s daughter Michelle, who could use the love of a father. Her husband left with all their money right after she was downsized out of a job. She was extremely depressed, and her neighbor is worried she might do something foolish. Could Carrie possibly find Evelyn’s brother and get him and his daughter in touch?
Angela and Steve’s wedding was beautiful, and the reception incredible. Carrie noticed that Aiden acted as if overtired, stumbling and blinking his eyes. Carrie was behind him at the chocolate fountain when Aiden began to fall. He was dead when he hit the floor.
The lab tests showed that Aiden was poisoned. The main suspects included his wife, Donna, Tommy, whose movie Aiden decided not to back, and even Roxy, who had set her cap for Aiden and was rebuffed. Angela’s mother begged Carrie to find whodunit, as she couldn’t stand having her family being accused of murder. I had a rotating list of suspects, but when whodunit was revealed, could honestly saw I never saw it coming! There are stunning surprises at the end; I am looking forward to the next one! I highly recommend this, and the rest of the series, to those who enjoy well-written cozy mysteries that include endearing characters, humor, and library settings.
From a thankful heart: I received a copy of this novel from the publisher and NetGalley, and this is my honest review.
This book is the 5th in the series of Blue Ridge Library Mysteries. I have read all of this series. There is the main characters that are in all of the books with the addition of new ones pertaining to the story.. All the characters are perfect for this story. The story starts with the cancellation of the venue of Angela. one of the library workers,' bridal shower and Carrie Singleton, the main character, and her library friends try to find another place to have it. Donna, Angela's cousin, offers her house and this is where the new characters in the book are introduced. At her wedding reception Aiden, Donna's husband collapses and dies. This is where the story takes off with all the twists and turns of the characters and whodunit, Carrie and her boyfriend, Dylan, try to find out who poisoned Adrien. The reader is taken through many scenarios that keep the reader guessing until the end. Throughout the story the reader watches Carrie and Dylan's relationship develop into something more serious The special dinner prepared by Dylan when he asks her to marry him and her acceptance. I am looking forward to book 6 to find out where their new adventures lead them.
Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this ARC.

I picked this book not realising that it was the 5th in a series, that being said it can easily be read as a stand alone novel. Death on the Shelf is a perfect cosy mystery, with an engaging who done it and characters that I really enjoyed reading about. The writing is fantastic and the setting - in a library - was perfect. I read this book in one sitting I was so invested in the story and I have gone and gotten myself the first book in the series. Many thanks to Netgalley the author and the publisher for a ARC of this book.
Lots of family drama in this one. I like soap operas so I enjoyed it. The murderer was a little easy to figure out, in a way. I like Carrie and Evelyn so I hope they return for more stories!
Death on the Shelf was another excellent installment in the Haunted Library Mysteries series with an intriguing plot.
Clover Ridge librarian Carrie Singleton is busy preparing for her best friend Angela's wedding when the restaurant where they're hosting the bridal shower cancels due to a fire less than a week before the event. After Angela's cousin Donna offers her home, the party is saved but the event is marred by gossip regarding the behavior of Donna's husband Aiden and another cousin, Roxy. When Aiden drops dead at the wedding reception, the suspect pool is large and includes most of the family. After Angela requests Carrie's help, Carrie begins digging into the family's complicated relationships. When another family member is killed, Carrie is determined to find the killer before anyone else dies.
The plot in this book was interesting with Aiden's murder, potential fraud, and a second murder closer to the end of the book. As Carrie digs into Aiden's life, she discovers that everything was not as it seemed. His marriage to Donna was rocky, Roxy had been relying on him heavily since her divorce, and something potentially fraudulent was going on at his medical practice. With so many avenues to explore, Carrie definitely has her work cut out for her trying to solve the murder. A lot of the suspects are members of Angela's family which makes it a bit awkward for Carrie to be looking at them as suspects, but thankfully she has Angela helping her which smooths over any potential ruffled feathers. After the second murder, the clock is definitely ticking to find the killer before they kill again. I thought the scene where Carrie catches the killer was well done and it had just the right amount of suspense.
Carrie has improved as a main character throughout the series. She's developed her skills as an investigator and she no longer keeps information from the police chief. I actually really liked the working relationship she has with the police chief in this one as they work well together. Carrie's relationship with her boyfriend Dylan has continued to develop which I was happy to see. I will say there were a few instances where Dylan kept things from Carrie and she was upset upon finding out. Personally I think she was right to be upset but then Dylan kept doing it despite knowing it was upsetting her which I wasn't happy about.
Overall Death on the Shelf was an enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to reading future books in the series. I highly recommend the series for readers newer to the cozy mystery genre.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
Carrie Singleton is celebrating the wedding of her best friend, Angela. In the midst of the wedding festivities, the husband of one of the Angela’s cousins takes a nose dive into the chocolate fountain. Who killed the beloved doctor? Was it the spouse? Was it the angry business partner? Was it an angry lover? Carrie will find out!
The setting of Clover Ridge is idyllic. The small town is beautiful, Carrie’s cottage is adorable, and the library is full of character. Carrie is easy to sympathize with and her friends at the library are charming, especially the library ghost Evelyn. There were lots of red herrings that kept me guessing, and in the end I was very surprised. I highly recommend this series!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
Wedding bells are about to ring for librarian Carrie Singleton's best friend and co-worker Angela Vecchio but their bridal shower venue suffered extensive damage in a fire. Angela's cousins, Donna and Roxy offer to help with everything including hosting the shower, something Angela isn't sure about but with no other options she acquiesces. The event has strange undertones and many guests notice Roxy's fawning over Donna's husband Aidan.
Following the wedding guests are treated to an opulent reception but the party takes a drastic turn when Aiden collapses right in front of Carrie and into the chocolate fountain. It is clear the man is dead and there is a room full of suspects.
Carrie has a few true suspects in mind; his wife Donna, the flirt, Roxy, Roxy's ex-husband, Angela's angry brother, Aiden's partner, and even Aidan's controlling office manager who seems to have the dirt on everyone.
Carrie is also dealing with a request from the library's friendly ghost, Evelyn. She wants Carrie to find her brother Harold so he can help another family member. The mayor has her in mind for another job too. So between hunting down a missing person, and deciding whether she wants to honor the mayor's request, she now has to find a murderer. Can she do it all? or will she be another causality and join Evelyn in the afterlife where the wardrobe appears to be vast?
____
Ms. Brook's characters continue to evolve in realistic ways. Carrie gets stronger in each story and people in the right places have noticed. She is actively participating in the library expansion planning and putting forth her ideas. The mayor has picked her for an important position in the city. Her relationship with Dylan is moving right along although Carrie believes he is keeping something from her. Dylan's business is growing. He already has brought Carrie's dad into the business and is now interviewing to bring in another investigator. Evelyn pops in often in this story and is putting pressure on Carrie to find her brother. We meet a plethora of new characters due to Angela's wedding and in Carrie trying to fulfill Evelyn's request. All the characters are skillfully created and have a purpose in the story.
Our protagonist is one industrious individual with two mysteries to solve in this book. They are expertly twisted together with all the other happenings that take place. Carrie finds a unique balance and I had a good time tagging along with her each step of the way. She was hindered by Angela's mother who begged her to prove all her family members innocent but Carrie had to follow where each clue led. One observation led to revealing all but put Carrie in a dire situation and made by heart race.
Death on the Shelf is a well-plotted cozy mystery with interesting characters. I was kept guessing throughout the entire story. The final chapter greatly piqued my interest to read the next book soon. Evelyn thinks "Clover Ridge is in for many changes". and I am excited to read all about them.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to Crooked Lane Books, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
Carrie Singleton is going all out to help her BFF Angela prepare for her big day. When the restaurant where the bridal shower was set to be has a fire, Angela’s cousins step up and save the day. With things working themselves out, the big day arrive and the ceremony goes off with out a hitch. Then at the reception, Angela’s cousin in law falls dead into the chocolate fountain, right in front of Carrie. With the main suspects all being in Angela’s family, Carrie agues to help find out who killed the man since the family members all claim to be innocent.
With Carrie agreeing to sleuth, but not favoring the family if the evidence points their way, she starts digging. Then another family member dies and Carrie is more than a little suspicious when they claim it was an accident. With Carrie and the police digging, the murderer is playing it cool, even after a second hit. Will the murderer get off scott free or will they slip up and take Carrie down with them?
A super series that I have read since the beginning and cannot get enough of! The progression of life across the books is also a story line I love. The author keeps developing the characters and that is half of the fun of reading the series too. Between the characters and the whodunit, every book is a win. If this Cozy isn’t on your reading list, add it now!
Death on the Shelf is a fun and easy to read cozy mystery.
The novel is in Clover Ridge where librarian Carrie is happy to attend her best friend's wedding. You would think that everything would be happy as roses. Well, let me tell you about the dead body. And then to make matters worse the list of suspects is longer than you can imagine. Oh, and did I forget to mention another dead body?
It's a great cozy read with loveable characters. Can't wait for the next book!
Carrie Singleton, Smoky Joe and her friendly library ghost Evelyn are trying to solve a murder, reunite a woman and her father all while some surprising news awaits!
Carrie has grown into a strong and independent woman. I think that is what makes her so relatable because everything she has accomplished has been through hard work and supportive friends and family. It has been so much fun to see Carrie mature in her personal and professional lives. This mystery has her helping her best friend Angela find out who murdered a well liked doctor at her wedding. Along with that mystery, Evelyn asks her to locate her missing brother and reunite him with his daughter. The mystery is crafted so well that I had many suspects but found I guessed wrong - twists and turns and red herrings made the story so enjoyable.
I read the mystery in two sittings and encourage readers to plan not to be able to put the book down! It's that good!
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Carrie Singleton is busy preparing for Angela’s wedding where she is one of the bridesmaids. Angela is getting nervous as the big day approaches. Angela’s brother, Tommy is arriving, and they have a contentious relationship plus little problems regarding the wedding keep cropping up. On a lovely June day, Angela is married, and everyone heads off to party at the reception. In the dessert line ahead of Carrie, a doctor cousin-in-law of the brides falls face first into the chocolate fountain. Dylan checks for a pulse and finds none. Angela’s mother asks Carrie to do a little sleuthing because the death has thrown Angela for a loop. Carrie soon finds herself with a lengthy suspect list and soon another related death. Can Carrie with help from Evelyn, the library’s resident ghost, solve the case before the killer strikes again? Death on the Shelf by Allison Brook is the 5th A Haunted Library Mystery. Death on the Shelf can be read as a standalone if you are new to the series. I thought Death on the Shelf was well-written with engaging, developed characters. The story moved along at a good pace and the storyline will have you quickly turning the pages. Carrie’s life is in order with a job she loves, good friends, family, and a sweet boyfriend. I love Evelyn, the ghost that inhabits the library. She is a sweetie and helps Carrie with her sleuthing. This time, though, Evelyn needs some assistance in locating a relative. Evelyn’s niece, Michelle needs help and Evelyn believes the girl’s father is the answer. Carrie has her hands full with two murders, locating a missing person, and her job at the library. The mystery had several good suspects along with red herrings. If you pay close attention, you will find the clues needed to solve the crime. There was a twist or two along the way that keep things lively. I love that Dylan, Carrie’s boyfriend, supports her sleuthing as well at Lt. Mathers. The ending was delightful, and it has me looking forward to the next A Haunted Library Mystery. Death on the Shelf is a wild ride with wedding woes, a spirited request, a bothersome brother, curious cousins, a chocolate fountain catastrophe, and an inquisitorial librarian.
Death on the Shelf is the 5th book in the Haunted Library Mystery series. This is the second book I have read in this series and I was happy to dive straight in. Allison Brook did a fantastic job providing some backstory, making this a great standalone read. I was sold from the very beginning, with its solid characters, great writing and a marvellous mystery that provided a good sprinkling of clues to satisfy even the most painstaking and diligent armchair detective.
The author has drawn a lot of great characters in this fabulous cozy mystery. I particularly liked librarian Carrie Singleton who works in the local haunted library building. Her best friend, Angela Vecchio is getting married and the wedding is taking place on a day in June. Beforehand Angela's rich cousin, Donna hosts a lavish bridal shower at her and her husband Aiden's home.
Set in a small Connecticut town - Clover Ridge - Carrie has a lot going on in this book and there is a side mystery as an added bonus. I enjoyed how Carrie handled both investigations and there were a reasonable number of suspects as to who might have caused Aiden's mishap and death with the chocolate fountain. Carrie must make a decision at the end of the book, and readers are left with a marvellous ending to a belter of a story. I am looking forward to returning to Clover Ridge with Carrie on a future occasion to read the earlier books in the series! So entertaining and engaging, Death on the Shelf is definitely well worth the time invested.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my own request from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
I had a moment of confusion starting out. A feeling of "Have I really listened to this series before?" followed me around for a while before I started to get back into it. Although, "into it" might be a bit generous, actually.
I felt detached from the story and the characters for most of the book. They felt shallow, sort of petty, and whiny - all around. Most of all: Angela, the immature, borderline bridezilla, acting out over issues I personally found to be spanning from ridiculous to hysterical (in the non-funny way) made me want to bang my head against something while she was ranting on.
The constant nagging about marriage bored me - and the sugar sweet ending (all too predictable) made me sigh, roll my eyes, and then yawn before falling into a diabetic coma (nearly). It was almost icky, rather than cute. Very much not my thing, but ... never mind.
The murders also fell a bit flat. I really couldn't find any sympathy for the murder victims and ended up not really caring about the "Who?" or "Why?" at all. (Even if I did find the murderer to be somewhat obvious in spite of being hidden behind a lot of red herrings.)
In the end, I think the author put a lot more effort into describing every meal the main character had throughout the book, rather than weaving an appealing mystery. Previous books have featured quirky in-detail-descriptions of what kind of cat food Smokey Joe has been fed, but that was absent from this book almost as much as Smokey Joe himself. The poor cat had no function in this book at all and felt mainly like an afterthought. That was a shame.
I have the 6th book lined up on my TBR, but if it doesn't pull itself up by its bootstraps I might drop this series.
I have to admit I almost DNF’d this book at the beginning and I’m glad I did not. For the first 30% or so it read very amateurish and not at all like I am used to for this series. It was infuriating to me. I kept reading and somewhere along the way after Angela’s wedding it got better. It was back to the writing style I am used to in this series.
Evelyn, the ghost, appears asking Carrie for help with finding her brother. While the storyline here is good, I’m just not sure it fits. It was almost like the author couldn’t figure out how to use Evelyn in the main murder mystery.
The main murder mystery was very intriguing and I for the life of me couldn’t figure it out.
If I could rate it as 3.5 stars I would but did bump it up to 4. The ending is surprising.
I do look forward to the next installment even though this was my least favorite of the series.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions expressed in the above review are entirely my own.
I’ve followed the Haunted Library Mystery series from the beginning, and I always know I’m going to love the next book. Death on a Shelf is no exception. I adore the dynamics between Carrie & Evelyn (the resident library ghost), and their scenes are inevitably my favorites, though I always love the swoony scenes between Carrie & Dylan too. The author does a great job of capturing the sort of tension that is unique to weddings & the family drama they seem to stir up… and when you throw a couple of murders into the mix, too, well you can imagine all the emotions that are flaring. She weaves these elements together along with a couple of subplots and a slew of suspects to deliver a mystery that proves challenging to amateur sleuths on and off the page. Another excellent installment in this cozy series!

I made the mistake to pick up a fifth book in a series, and while I was unfamiliar with the main character and certain aspects this book was easy to get into. The atmosphere created in this book is exactly what I enjoy in a good murder mystery. Carrie is a witty and interesting main character and it was a pleasure to follow her throughout her investigation. The side characters, though a bit flat, were interesting enough and while I did figure out who did it, the story was interesting and kept me reading all night.
Now I want to read the previous books in this series, and I would recommend you start with the first book too, though this can be read seperately.
This series has always been one that I keep up with because I enjoy the characters so much, particularly Evelyn, the library ghost. The mysteries are always solid and while Carrie actively investigates, she spends her time asking questions and not too much more. There was one TSTL moment in this one that really bothered me but otherwise another great mystery to solve with a satisfactory conclusion. While the mysteries are well-developed and the secondary storylines are also interesting, I have had enough of all the wedding talk and had hoped it would stop with Angela's wedding finally taking place but it seems like now, with Carrie constantly thinking about what it would be like to be married to Dylan, we're in for more of it in the coming books.

Carrie is excited that her best friend Angela’s wedding has finally come. A death sends Angela in a spiral an asks Carrie for help. Set in Clover Ridge, Connecticut the place is great. Wonderful characters and a great mystery. #DeathontheShelf #NetGalley
