Waterford based Detective Conal Brophy is a former hurling star who walked out on the biggest game of his life. Known unflatteringly as Bottler ever since, he is also a fine detective.

When a couple are murdered and their son is missing, Brophy and his team investigate. The case takes them into the world of major drug cartels and attracts the attentions of the Dublin based National Bureau of Crime Investigation. The inevitable clash with local officers occurs.

Brophy has his own views on the case and follows a separate set of leads, again causing conflict. He also chases down an old case that got away from him and a traumatic experience from his own childhood. In fact there is so much going on that the ending becomes rather confused as all of the various plot lines are resolved. This is a decent book otherwise, although the lead character is a difficult one to relate to.

It took me a while to get into this book but I don't know why; it is no reflection on either the book or the author. I am glad however, that I persevered as the book rewarded my patience well. The ultimate outcome was no surprise but there was a rather large one on the way to the ending.

In the course of the story, I went from "I don’t think I will bother with any more of these" to "I will certainly read the next one"

I'm not sure if I really enjoyed this book or not! I got about a third of the way and thought I might give up on it but decided to persevere and was glad I did. I did get a little confused with who everyone was as there were so many plots however they sorted themselves out eventually. It was somewhat predictable who was behind the drug business although the actual murderer came as a surprise. I'm glad I read it to it's conclusion!

Set in Ireland. Liked the characters, story and writing. I have a lot of questions about things alluded to. Needs more details. Hopefully they get answered in subsequent books. Drugs, murder and crimes.
